          OLD TOWN PHENOMENON
What's bigger than new material from global superstars? A cultural phenomenon.

Lil Nas X's anthem, "Old Town Road" is on pace to to be the #1 song in the country for the seventh week in a row. This week, Nas' track will fend off a debut from a power collab, Ed Sheeran f/Justin Bieber's I Don't Care." The week before it was a new Shawn Mendes single, and at the end of April is held its own against the queen of debut releases, Taylor Swift.

The new tracks from the global superstars are performing strongly. They're just up against a viral, cross-cultural, genre-transcending smash.

The most recent prior example of a song becoming an undeniable cultural movement is 2017's "Despacito (Remix)." Luis Fonsi's already huge song went into overdrive with the addition of Justin Bieber singing in Spanish for the remix, which carried the smash for 16 consecutive weeks as the #1 song in the country.

And "Old Town Road" is showing no sign of slowing down. The video is due to drop on Friday, while more and more viral renditions keep popping up. Although Lil Nas withstood the initial heavy artillery from Team Swift, but the Sheeran/Bieber camp has a big game plan coming in hopes of unseating the viral sensation (they too will be dropping a video shortly). Oddsmakers say Apple Music will be the difference-maker here.

Per the updated YTD Top 5 songs below, "Old Town Road" has now surpassed Ariana Grande's "7 rings" as the biggest song of 2019 so far.

Also had a question about the ratio use, it’s correct that before 2016 all singles have to be divided by 100:1 and after that same year by 150:1, right?

Don't think so - when the BB200 began including streams it was 1500:1

                                https://www.billboard.com/articles/c...digital-tracks

                                From July 2018 it went to a 2 tier formula - 1250:1 for subsciption streams / 3750:1 for ad-supported

                                          From July 2018 it went to a 2 tier formula - 1250:1 for subsciption streams / 3750:1 for ad-supported

What I meant is the RIAA formula in singles. For example, Shawn Mendes Stitches was released on 2015, and not long ago Billboard made an article on his career sales and streams on US, and this song had 787 million streams and 2,7M digital sales. Will this single streams be divided by 100 (7,870,000) or by 150 (5,246,000)?
Here a link to the article, hope you understood what my question was mostly about. And thanks for the other singles sales.

                                          • ^ My understanding is the current conversion factor would be apply, regardless to when a song or album was released.

In 2018, Billboard's published mid-year charts converted audio streams at 150:1 for songs/1500:1 for albums.
The conversion factor then changed for the second half of the year to that 2 tier 125:1 & 375:1 for songs.
When the 2018 year-end charts were published, streams for the whole year were converted on the new basis.

Without knowing the split of your 787 streams, you won't be able to get an accurate conversion, but I'd guess you're looking at around 5.8 million.

The On-Demand chart only includes the streams that count in the Billboard 200, so no video streams or streams from programmed services.

The Streaming chart includes the streams that count in the Hot 100.
