  • Italy: Charts, Books and so on. Summary

In Italy now we have these charts:
    1) Fimi charts (Singles, Album, Compilations, Vynil). Singles, Albums & Compilations count Physical, Download & Streaming. They are available on Fimi website https://www.fimi.it/top-of-the-music...e.kl#/charts/1
Later (I don't know when) we will have also the full archive.
    2) Musica & Dischi (M&D) charts (Singles & Albums). These charts count only sales (no streaming). This is the main difference. Another difference is Album & Compilation (Various Artists) in the same chart. They are available here: http://www.hitparadeitalia.it/hp_md/md2019-04-17.htm and here http://www.hitparadeitalia.it/hp_mda/index.html Full archive only from mid 2018.
    3) Sorrisi & Canzoni charts. Now they are exactly the same as Fimi charts. No online
    4) Earone charts: Various Airplay charts. Archive from 2010 https://www.earone.it/classifiche/cl...anale_storico/
    5) Radioairplay charts: Various Airplay charts. Archive from 2016 http://radioairplay.fm/classifiche-m...radio-airplay/
    6) HitParadeItalia chart. Single only. It is a Top-200. Only this chart counts Physical, Download, Streaming & Airplay. Archive available. This is the last one http://www.hitparadeitalia.it/hp_weeks/19/hp190420.htm

Hi, I have a couple of questions. First, why did you only feature a Top 10 in your RAI singles book? Was there any particular reason for it?

second, can you please help me with this site: http://www.dancedirectory.it/us ? It has some Italian dance charts, but I cannot copy the text to translate to understand what it is exactly, how influential it was etc. I'd appreciate any help

      1) You are right. The reason is that for some years Rai featured only 10 positions, for some other years Rai featured 10 positions and all the other 10 positions were in alphabetical order (tied). So we have 20 positions for not all the years.
An idea could be reprint the book with all the positions and, maybe, with the album charts too.
      2) Correct. This is the most important dance chart. I will add it to my post. If you want to copy the text you have to save it as PDF (click on the left of the page). Then you can copy it.

Thank you very much for the answers! And thank you for the initial post, too, it's very useful! Also a couple of question, if I may:

        1. Do you know when RAI started to publish the Top 20 charts, in what year?

        2. May I ask about Hitparadeitalia site, maybe you know. In "Indici" section it has hits by some artists with the peak positions - but I wasn't able to find them in your books. Like, say, "Hey Matthew" by Karel Fialka is indicated to have peaked at #28, but there's so sign of him in either M&D or S&C books and it's unlikely that he charted in RAI, which was only Top 20 in 1987. Can you tell me something about where that chart position came from?

          1) Hit Parade RAI:
from 6 Jan 1967: First chart: 10 pos.
          from 29 Sep 1973 9 positions + 7 songs at pos. 10
          from 6 Jan 1979: 20 pos.
          from 17 Nov 1990: 10 pos. + 10 songs at pos. 11

          2) HitParadeItalia: the old charts are obtained with an average of all the existing charts. Karel Fialka charted in the monthly chart of Musica&Dischi. (In 1988 the M&D weekly charts had only 25 positions, but the M&D monthly chart had 50 positions).

Hi. Is this the official Italian Dance Music chart? Like Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart in the US?

There are no official dance charts in Italy. Probably this one is the most important and most reliable. But another important dance chart is this one: https://www.deejay.it/classifiche/deejay-parade/

Ok. But where was this chart published in the 80's and 90's? And who was responsible for this chart and compiled it?

At first it was broadcast by some private radio stations, then it was published in various magazines (Musica e Dischi, Discotec, Tutto). Later on the website. Only Eugenio Tovini, owner of the website, is responsible for this chart. At the beginning he compiled it using the charts from different radio stations.

me, I have a question about the list of No. 1 single hits, if I may. I have the magazine scans and am slowly going through the charts. I am now at 1986-87 and there are problems. Your dates are later than in magazines and also there are some errors, like you list "Final Countdown" as getting to No. 1 for the first time in December 1986 but according to magazine itself it only got there in January 1987. Can you clarify, please? What date should I use for the charts? The magazine gave dates like, say, 1-7 January, but what is the date of publication? 1 January, 7 January or some other?

First of all Radiocorriere is a weekly italian magazine. It publishes radio and TV programs and also the RAI italian charts from 1967 until the nineties (Singles and Album). But not allways all the positions.
There is a website with the scan of all these magazines from 1925 until 1995. But some issues are missing.

In the previous website the issue 52 of december 1986 is missing. Probably you don't have this scan. I have this magazine. It is exactly the same as n.1 of 1987. The reason is that, during the Christmas holidays, they have printed the same chart for two weeks. But the chart broadcast was different. This is the chart of n. 52 1 The final countdown Europe
                                  2 Notorious Duran Duran

Regarding the dates: If the date of the magazine is 4-10 January, it means that it contains TV programs from 4 to 10 Jan. This magazine is out on the newspaper shops about 31 Dec.and it contains the chart broadcast on radio on 26 Dec.. And it contains sales about until 13 Dec. There is a long delay. But in the nineties we had this delay in the italian charts

If i remember well, the dates written on your books are right. Dates reported on the website were alligned with UK charts. Can you confirm?

Furthermore, the number ones on these links ( http://www.it-charts.it/sorrisi-s-n.1.htm and http://www.it-charts.it/sorrisi-a-n.1.htm ) cover only the pre-Nielsen era.

@Passing_Strang Another important thing to say, the Rai charts reported on Radiocorriere TV were often wrong (the correct charts were aired on Discoring, an Italian Top of the Pops competitor of Superclassifica Show by TV Sorrisi e Canzoni. Another Italian Top of the Pops). Guido used the charts aired on Discoring for his RAI books.

Thank you guys for your explanation, but I'm still a bit confused. Was there a fixed day of the week that RAI magazine was published? I'd like a date to put in my database.

As for the charts' accuracy, well yes, I've seen lots of misprints and several charts are not printed at all, creating gaps. That's s shame but those lists are all I have...

The "Radiocorriere" magazine was published on thursday before the date printed on the magazine. But there is no connection with the chart broadcast on the radio. It was broadcast every Friday.

For the first time a book based on the monthly charts of Musica & Dischi is released. In general, the weekly charts were always examined. But Musica & Dischi is a monthly magazine and the charts published in the magazine were almost always monthly charts. Other times they were the weekly charts (of the last week before the magazine was released) but extended to a greater number of positions. For example, when in 1966 the weekly charts stopped at 15 positions, the monthly charts had 60 positions. And when, in the 2000s, the weekly charts had 50 positions, the monthly ones had 100. This means that in this volume there are hundreds and hundreds of songs that never entered the weekly charts. For example Donovan is present with 2 songs in the weekly charts but with 6 in the monthly ones. Freddie Mercury with 3 songs (vs. 6 in the monthly ones), Style Council 1 vs. 4, Genesis 4 vs. 7, Italian group Equipe 84 10 vs. 20, the Italian singer Anna Identici 1 vs. 11. The volume is available here: http://www.lulu.com/shop/guido-racca...-24402703.html On purchases made by January 30th there is a discount of 15% http://www.lulu.com/home

That's fantastic, me, thank you so much for the info! Will definitely be getting it very soon (only have to wait for the salary ))

But I'd really love to see how the pages look. Can you please post one to check? The preview on Lulu features three blank pages (which is helpful if you want to see how they look in the book), but no actual pages with info...
