Many thanks for spotting the error.

My database uses a column called RIN to alter the chart run compiler and make it start a new run each time the record re-enters the chart. If this column is blank (through me getting it wrong) then no new run is started and the chart compiler picks up where it left off . . . . so a record charted on 25 Dec, 1 jan and 15 jan would have a continuous run if I didn't add a 1 in the RIN column for 15 Jan.

i do love this thread though. i bought Record Mirror every week throughout 86-89 just for the top 100 chart. i was so happy to have found the data here online.

why don't the Guinness books use the 51-60 chart positions compiled mid 1970's and the 76-100 from 1983 onwards, i mean if these are official chart positions why do they cut it off at position 75?

also in their current edition they include album positions from 76-100 when that chart was considered an official full 100 so why not the singles ?

I'll be happy to bow to anyone with more knowledge than me on this one, but as I understand it, the Top 75 singles chart comprised of the 75 best selling singles of the week (as it should), but once you hit The Next 25 (as Music Week used to call it back in the eighties), things are significantly less clear. The single at No.76 was not necessarily the 76th best selling single as this is was where chart regulations really kicked in - if a single lost sales over a period of three or so weeks it was removed from the list. There were other rules that could get you kicked out too, but that's the main one I remember. As a result, the Top 75 and the Next 25 operated differently, even though records used to travel between the two listings quite happily. Also, Music Week only printed posters for the Top 75 (and Top 100 Albums), so the only way you'd ever see the Next 25 in a record shop would be if that shop stuck up the detailed chart listing on the wall for some strange reason - and when I say detailed, I mean it, every format would be listed with its respective catalogue number and you'd also have songwriting and production credits too. For those two reasons, I think that's why Guinness and others only go up to 75 as it's a nice convenient place to stop - after all, you don't want confuse your readers by having to explain chart methodology to them. Personally, I don't count positions after 75 as official, but it's interesting to see how long it took for some records to crawl into the Top 75 (and also how many truly dire novelty records will thankfully never see the insides of the British Hit Singles book).

you have a point with the countless one hit wonder acts listed in the 'next 25'.. the books would be twice as thick !!

i'm a soul music fan myself and one of the singers i admire is Patti Austin. she had several singles to go no higher than #76 throughout the 83-91 period. it's a shame these positions never appear in the books.

some interesting Jackson facts i spotted regarding the 76-100:

Two To The Power was a charting single for Janet and Cliff Richard two years before! What Have You Done For Me Lately.

also had the 76-100 postions been printed in the Guinness books, sisters La Toya and Rebbie would have listings too with their solo records as both sisters have never gone any higher than 76..

something else i spotted:

the Fatback Band's hit I Found Lovin' spent twice as many weeks [20+?] in the 76-100 slot than on the Top 75..

i do love this thread though. i bought Record Mirror every week throughout 86-89 just for the top 100 chart. i was so happy to have found the data here online.

why don't the Guinness books use the 51-60 chart positions compiled mid 1970's and the 76-100 from 1983 onwards, i mean if these are official chart positions why do they cut it off at position 75?

also in their current edition they include album positions from 76-100 when that chart was considered an official full 100 so why not the singles ?

They're not considered official positions as the old Breakers Chart up to May 1978 and the Bubbling Under / 76-100 from mid 1981 onwards all had exclusion rules that ommitted certain songs. On the other hand, the albums Top 100 was a strictly sales based chart when it ran from Aug 1981 to Dec 1988... As a result it is considered an official part of the chart.

EDIT: there never was a 51-60 on the Singles chart in the mid 70s, it was just the "next 10" records that hadn't made the top 50. They were just numbered 1-10, not 51-60.

I'm sorry to do this to BoroButch and Miroslav Jurceka, but I have checked my record of the top 100 for week ending 14th April 1984 and it says that number 89 was "Shapes of Things" by Gary Moore, down from the previous week's 77, with 3 weeks on the chart!

The chart track for Annabel Lamb's "The Flame" in my archives says: number 100 on week ending 7th April, then a re-entry at 93 on 21st April and 92 on 28th April.

I think I'd better explain how I got my info at this stage. In July 1978 I started keeping the singles chart, starting off with the Top 30 but quickly becoming the Top 40. By the summer of 1979 I was keeping a weekly record of the Top 75. In those days the first airing of the newest singles chart was done on Radio 1 from 12.45 on a Tuesday lunchtime. This meant the last 15 minutes of science lessons before lunchtime at school for me. So I'd always sit along the side of the classroom, preferably at or near the back, with a tranny radio in my inside coat pocket and an earpiece going up my sleeve through my collar and into the ear on the far side from the teacher's gaze. They would start by playing the record at number 5, then number 4, then 3, then 2, after which they would give a rundown of the entire new Top 40 before playing the number 1. Then, between 1 and 2 p.m. they used to play all the new entries and climbers. Several minutes of intense concentration and frantic scribbling would have me the whole new Top 40 written down onto my (prer-numbered) sheet of paper. Then people would come to me and ask me what number the Clash's new song was, or how the Jam were doing, etc. etc. A few would get me to rundown the whole 40 to them. (It was only in September 1987, with advances in information technology, that they were able to move to revealing the new chart in the now-familiar Sunday afternoon slot).

Then, I think around early 1980, someone told me of a phone number you could ring up to get the new chart. So from then on all I had to do was dial up this number, any convenient time of the week day or night, and a lady's voice on the line would relate a long list of numbers. These were the new chart positions so that if you had the previous chart you could just go down it from 1 right down to 75 (and later 100), writing the new positions on it.

e.g. "Singles chart for week ending 17th December 1985 as follows:

1 - 4 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 3 - 13 - 11 - 5 - 2 - ... and so on until ... 61 - next two out - 88 - 69 - 82 - next one out - 71 - last two out". (She would always pause after each block of 20 which helped one avoid getting into a muddle)

Then she would reel off a list of new-entries (and any re-entries) from the highest to the lowest.

e.g. "58 - Alice (I Want You Just For Me) - Full Force - <record label and number>
77 - Raise the Roof - Conway Brothers - <record label and number>" ... and so on until ...
"100 - She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult - <record label and number>".

This made it really easy for me to grab the entire new top 75 or 100 with a five-minute phone call costing only 10 or 20 pence at any time that suited me, which I did every week up to Christmas 1985. I still have all these plus every Top 40 since (Top 75 when I remember to download it from the internet); they've all survived the passage of time and half a dozen moves of house.

I'm especially thankful to KingOfSkiffle for his posts enabling me to fill in a couple of incomplete ones from 1983 (mostly due to missing some while on a summer holiday in Germany) and also the gaps in the earliest ones I had from 1978-79.

P.S. I can confirm That "Love and Pride" did indeed come out in the late summer/ early autumn of 1984. I'm pretty sure it was re-issued in early 1985, but it may have been technically a re-entry. It was one of those songs that wasn't a hit initially but went big second time around.
