        • Finally got round to adding these into the database, and I present below the Alphabetical listings for the Next 25 from August 1981 to Dec 1982.

I had to assign the records positions, so the records where sorted as printed by the magazine, and then assigned a number.

          You'll see as we progress!

One or two charts are still missing.

                      • Just spotted an immediate error on the last couple of "next 25" listings for 25 Dec '82 and 1 Jan '83 - "The Story Of The Blues" by Wah! actually broke the Top 75 on 25 Dec '82 at No 59, and remained there the next week as no chart was compiled over Christmas, and then moved up to No 34 on 8 Jan '83. So after 18 Dec '82 it should not still feature in the next 25 list. You may wish to rectify....

                          • Debbie Harry spent four weeks at 97 with the ironically titled The Jam Was Moving!

Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping first charted one year earlier than i thought!

And Altered Images' Happy Birthday had avery unsure stat before eventually climbing to #2!

                            Amazing!

                            • I'm not sure if it's a good idea to number these charts from 76 to 100 as people may think they are actual positions whereas they are just the records in alphabetical order (as the "Next 25" chart listed the songs in alphabetical order in those days) and then kingofskiffle has effectively given them a "chart position" based on the first letter of the title of the song!

Debbie Harry didn't really spend 4 weeks at #97 (see Blondini's post above), she just happened to be listed near the bottom of the alphabetical chart list for the 4 weeks she was on this list and has been given the "position" of 97 as a result of where she was on the list...

I think I did point something like that out at the start, but you are, of course, correct. My database has to have numbers to make it work properly, or I can't store them. I possibly needed to make it clearer to start with.... Ah well!

sorry if I came across as sounding a bit negative! It's actually because you (rightly) have a good reputation of providing excellent chart facts and stats that I was a bit worried in case people thought that these were actual charts and chart positions and started quoting the positions as fact...

That said, I can see why you need to number them to get them on to your database and there is, of course, no other way to achieve that other than by numerical ordering.

                                  • Maybe one of these days someone who has retained, or has access to, the industry charts detailing the actual positions below 75 for the pre-'83 period will log onto this site and decide to enlighten us. They must still exist somewhere...
All this just continues to highlight the fact that insofar as analysis of "true" chart performance goes, chart restrictions, such as those relating to the sub-75 section of the published Record Mirror/MW charts, only serve to distort what could've been a reasonably accurate picture of singles sales rankings. It would have been so much simpler for everyone if a straightforward Top 100 or 200 based purely on actual sales that week had been compiled and published in the BMRB and Gallup years. Instead, we have to faff about with breakers, alphabetical rundowns and compressed charts for positions beyond 75.
And worse still, in an age when technology easily allows for every single sale to be logged and an entirely accurate chart compiled, they even messed about with the rules for the entire chart in 2005/'06 when trying to assimilate the legal download phenomenon, thereby distorting the rankings even further!
I just hope that now we have a chart that more-or-less reflects what the Top 200 actual bestselling single tracks each week are, they don't meddle with that essential formula from now on. But I won't hold my breath as the industry that supports the chart is a fickle thing.

                                    • I'd imagine Alan Jones has all the old industry charts, or at the very least access to them.

The industry chart has always been much bigger than the printed part. I've seen references to chart positions in the top 100 for March / April 1976 (when The Beatles charted all their old songs), and those positions (for the Beatles songs below #50) were listed in Record Mirror. I've seen mention of positions in the top 200 for 1980, for John Lennon. So even before the "all new" industry only top 200 appeared in January 1983, alongside the publicly available top 100, there were charts that were known only to the industry. It's only since the 1990s that we have had access to these bigger, industry only, charts and really only since the chart compilation went "in house" so to speak.

By the way, the compressed chart (#76 to #100/#200) existed well beyond the Gallup years, (from 1983/1994*) to 2005 in fact. Although "uncompressed" charts were printed in Hit Music until 2001 these charts were not official and involved the staff at Hit Music inserting the "starred out" (ie excluded) songs in their correct sales positions on the chart. When NME began to carry the top 100 in the very early 00s it had to use the official (compressed) chart for #76 to #100, as did Chartsplus for its extended #76 to #200 when it appeared in September 2001. Chartsplus also had to use the compressed Top 200 charts from 1994 when listing previous hits by acts.

                                      * The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the compressed top 200 existed prior to 1994 (when the chart came "in-house") - Alan Jones sometimes referred to positions below #100 in his Record Mirror days but never indicated if the industry only chart had exclusions in the way the published top 100 - #s76-100 - did, and later the top 200 itself did from 1994. The compressed top 100 certainly did - even after RM folded it was still compiled, just never published until the original Chartsplus appeared in 1992.

                                      • To be honest, I said "BMRB/Gallup" years tentatively, as although I knew the "compressed" system was used in the Millward Brown era too (presumably until the chart for 23 April 2005 when legal download data was incorporated for physically-available singles?), but I had a feeling I'd read that an un-compressed version was published somewhere - judging by the above this must have been Hit Music. Surely if they simply added in the "starred out" discs to the compressed list at the relevant points, their chart should be regarded as effectively official, as it would represent a true sales ranking?
I agree that the good Mr Jones seems to be about the most likely candidate for holding details of historical "insider" charts, either personally or exclusively through the OCC's auspices. He also seems to have very detailed weekly and total sales data available, which would be an absolute goldmine of information for people on this site. However, in my defeatist way I have assumed that he would be prohibited from making such data systematically available outside Music Week, and that he probably would not be receptive to individual requests for chart info.
I also assume people like you Robbie, King Of Skiffle et al have tried this tack already and got nowhere, but if not, I believe Alan can be contacted by e-mail at Music Week. He could at least confirm what was compiled and when even if he couldn't make specific charts available.

It was indeed Hit Music, which ran the uncompressed chart from 12 Sep 1992 to it's demise in May 2001, and I have them all in the database (Trying not to gloat, and reading that sentence back realizes I have failed, but I shall swiftly carry on in the hopes nobody else noticed.)

It is, quite simply, alan@musicweek.com, so if you'd like to contact Mr Charts, feel free! I'd do it myself, but you chaps probably know best exactly how and what to ask him. Nothing ventured nothing gained anyway.

                                              • If he can compile and publish a book with every full sales chart available with total sales figures wherever possible?!
Okay, perhaps that would be over-reaching ourselves somewhat, especially for a maiden request. How about confirmation of more generic issues about chart compilation down the years, such as a) what size singles chart was compiled for the industry and during which periods, b) what general exclusion rules were applied, if any (and when), c) whether the non-published (preferably not in any way "compressed") charts are available anywhere and if not, d) could he assist with providing these publicly in any way, if he has authority?

Oh right! Still, it looks entertaining! Why didn't they list positions?
Tony's Charts ft Hits / Albums (11th July 20) - Jessie Ware breaks a record! I'm guessing here, but perhaps that additional chart was a Record Mirror initiative and the chart compilers would only allow the songs to be listed in a way that didn't identify actual positions - ie so they had no official standing.

Of course it could be some other reason - apparently the old (pre May 1978) Breakers Chart was, for a period of time, an alphabetical list before reverting back to a numerical list, so maybe the reasoning for why that chart became alphabetical for a while (whatever that might be) was being reapplied.

                                                          • Hello, all!

I don't the alphabetical next 25 lists from 1981-82 were a Record Mirror thing because I compiled mine from writing them down off the displayed chart in my local record shop or music department of WHSmith, Boots, etc. They used to put the full Top 75 chart (plus next 25 when that started) up on the wall somewhere, and these were the ones printed in Music Week.

To find those missing entries from the alphabetical next 25s, one thing I can suggest is for someone to take a trip down to the National Newspaper Library in Colindale, North London. This place stores archives of all the national and local newspapers, magazines, publications, etc. going back decades and even to the 19th Century! They should have all the old Music Weeks, Record Mirrors, etc. I was going to do this yself but struggle to find the time; if I get an opportunity to go there and look for this I will. I've been there a number of times over recent years (though not since about 2004). I have found the place is also useful for finding all sorts of other info that is hard to get hold of these days. I'm sure I saw Jeremy Clarkson in there once trying to get a piece of viewing apparatus working (Must have been doing some research)!

By car it is only a few minues drive once you come off the very bottom of the M1. Nearest train/tube stations are Colindale and Hendon.

NOTE If anyone goes there you will need to bring some form of ID with you such as a passport and driving licence. You fill in a small quick form at the reception upstairs. Then you fill in request slips saying what publication you want and from what dates and at what number table/seat you're sitting and hand them to the staff. Amuse yourself for a short time until they arrive out of the bowels of the building and happy viewing!

I hope this may be of some help to someone on here!
