  • Great find Dane!

    Nice updates for Metallica.

Also gives us an end of 2007 total for Come On Over of 15,449,000.

Still waiting for accurate end of 2007 data for the other over 10m soundscan albums so I can update that part on Page One.

He quotes soundscan era starting May 25th 1991. As we know from Hanboo's research, the totals we get start in March 1991. Billboard could then see the system work before they made the official changeover in May.

      Let there be rock!

        1) - Come On Over - Shania Twain (1997)

        1997 - 1.6m - 1,600,000 sold in 1997
        1998 - 6,492,526 - 4,900,000 sold in 1998
        1999 - 12,110,660 - 5,618,134 sold in 1999
        2000 - 13,652,045 - 1,541,385 sold in 2000
        2001 - 14,147,017 - 494,972 sold in 2001
        2002 - 14,490,470 - 343,453 sold in 2002
        2003 - 14,896,911 - 406,441 sold in 2003
        2004 - 15,267,050 - 370,139 sold in 2004
        2005 - 15,355,000 - 87,950 sold in 2005
        2006 - 15,408,533 - 53,533 sold in 2006
        2007 - 15,449,000 - 40,467 sold in 2007

Looked to be uncatchable in 2004, but sales slowed with the release of a compilation. Still looks safe until at least 2009.

        2) - Metallica - Metallica (1991)

        1991 - 3.4m - 3,400,000 sold in 1991
        1992 - 6.0m - 2,600,000 sold in 1992
        1993 - n/a
        1994 - n/a
        1995 - n/a
        1996 - n/a
        1997 - n/a
        1998 - n/a
        1999 - 11,715,533
        2000 - 12,441,854 - 726,321 sold in 2000
        2001 - 12,981,888 - 540,034 sold in 2001
        2002 - 13,332,320 - 350,432 sold in 2002
        2003 - 13,803,308 - 470,988 sold in 2003
        2004 - 14,213,000 - 409,692 sold in 2004
        2005 - 14,545,000 - 332,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 14,819,905 - 274,905 sold in 2006
        2007 - 15,077,000 - 257,095 sold in 2007

A great catalogue seller but gradually slowing. Could overtake Shania in 2009, particularly if the new album helps to keep this one in the 250-300k range for 2008.

        3) - Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette (1995)

        1995 - 4.2m - 4,200,000 sold in 1995
        1996 - 11.6m - 7,380,000 sold in 1996
        1997 - 12.7m - 1,100,000 sold in 1997
        1998 - 13.2m - 500,000 sold in 1998
        1999 - 13,542,393 - 342,393 sold in 1999
        2000 - 13,729,828 - 187,435 sold in 2000
        2001 - 13,890,054 - 160,226 sold in 2001
        2002 - 14,094,425 - 204,371 sold in 2002
        2003 - 14,200,822 - 106,397 sold in 2003
        2004 - 14,343,000 - 142,178 sold in 2004
        2005 - 14,453,000 - 110,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 14,513,313 - 60,313 sold in 2006
        2007 - 14,557,000 - 43,687 sold in 2007

This album will never move up, but is also likely to never lose the #3 spot. It's not even distantly threatened by anything.

        4) - Millenium - Back Street Boys (1999)

        1999 - 9,445,732 - 9,445,732 sold in 1999
        2000 - 11,705,375 - 2,259,643 sold in 2000
        2001 - 11,971,132 - 265,757 sold in 2001
        2002 - 12,030,804 - 59,672 sold in 2002
        2003 - 12,056,675 - 25,871 sold in 2003
        2004 - 12,069,000 - 12,325 sold in 2004
        2005 - 12,083,000 - 14,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 12,091,491 - 8,491 sold in 2006
        2007 - 12,099,000 - 7,509 sold in 2007

Burnt like a shooting star and then crashed to earth.

        5) - Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard (1992)

        1992 - 3.3m - 3,300,000 sold in 1992
        1993 - 8.8m - 5,500,000 sold in 1993
        1994 - n/a
        1995 - n/a
        1996 - n/a
        1997 - n/a
        1998 - n/a
        1999 - 11,605,690
        2000 - 11,655,923 - 50,233sold in 2000
        2001 - 11,689,093 - 33,170sold in 2001
        2002 - 11,714,440 - 25,347sold in 2002
        2003 - 11,741,779 - 27,339sold in 2003
        2004 - 11,761,999 - 20,220sold in 2004
        2005 - 11,778,000 - 16,001sold in 2005
        2006 - 11,789,552 - 11,552 sold in 2006
        2007 - 11,798,000 - 8,448 sold in 2007

Once an album drops below 10,000 a year it has to be officially declared dead.

        6) - The Supernatural - Santana (1999)

        1999 - 4,732,589 - 4,732,589 sold in 1999
        2000 - 10,590,413 - 5,857,824 sold in 2000
        2001 - 10,961,112 - 370,699 sold in 2001
        2002 - 11,165,842 - 204,370 sold in 2002
        2003 - 11,333,627 - 167,785 sold in 2003
        2004 - 11,437,000 - 103,373 sold in 2004
        2005 - 11,530,000 - 93,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 11,588,453 - 58,453 sold in 2006
        2007 - 11,643,000 - 54,547 sold in 2007

Sales of this one declining but holding up surprisingly well. I suppose its down to a rock audience. The 2007 compilation didn't seem to harm it.

        7) - Human Clay - Creed (1999)

        1999 - 2.1m - 2,100,000 sold in 1999
        2000 - 8.7m - 6,600,000 sold in 2000
        2001 - 10,490,972 - 1,850,000 sold in 2001
        2002 - 11,078,203 - 587,231 sold in 2002
        2003 - 11,291,067 - 212,864 sold in 2003
        2004 - 11,422,000 - 130,933 sold in 2004
        2005 - 11,463,000 - 41,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 11,483,557 - 20,557 sold in 2006
        2007 - 11,504,000 - 20,443 sold in 2007

Holds steady at 20k which is another surprise. This one received a knock-out punch when the Greatest Hits came out and sales dropped below 100k.

        8) - No Strings Attached - N'Sync (2000)

        2000 - 9,936,104 - 9,936,104 sold in 2000
        2001 - 10,891,514 - 955,410 sold in 2001
        2002 - 11,023,057 - 131,543 sold in 2002
        2003 - 11,069,789 - 46,732 sold in 2003
        2004 - 11,085,000 - 15,211 sold in 2004
        2005 - 11,093,000 - 8,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 11,099,051 - 6,051 sold in 2006
        2007 - 11,104,000 - 4,949 sold in 2007

Even worse than the BSBs. If only 1% of those who bought Justin Timberlake's solo albums had shown some interest in his history and bought this, then it would have sold 30-40k. Seems not even one in a milion of them were interested.

        9) - One - The Beatles (2000)

        2000 - 5,068,300 - 5,068,000 sold in 2000
        2001 - 7,978,300 - 2,910,000 sold in 2001
        2002 - 8.67m - 686,832 sold in 2002
        2003 - 9.23m - 564,868 sold in 2003
        2004 - 9.83m - 657,000 sold in 2004
        2005 - 10.37m - 540,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 10,821,222 - 451,222 sold in 2006
        2007 - 11,097,000 - 275,778 sold in 2007

Although still the best current seller in this Top 10, it's annual sale has basically halved in 2 years. The release of "Love" in 2006 probably damaged sales, but they were already in decline. By February 2008 this had overtaken No Strings to move to #8.

        10) - Falling Into You - Celine Dion (1996)

        1996 - 6m - 6,000,000 sold in 1996
        1997 - 9m - 3,000,000 sold in 1997
        1998 - 9,640,000 - 640,000 sold in 1998
        1999 - 10,224,282 - 584,282 sold in 1999
        2000 - 10,357,969 - 133,687 sold in 2000
        2001 - 10,438,190 - 80,221 sold in 2001
        2002 - 10,525,873 - 87,683 sold in 2002
        2003 - 10,614,005 - 88,132 sold in 2003
        2004 - 10,683,000 - 68,995 sold in 2004
        2005 - 10,728,000 - 45,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 10,752,658 - 24,658 sold in 2006
        2007 - 10,768,000 - 15,342 sold in 2007

Sales continue to decline but she stays in five figures, unlike 3 others in this Top 10. Looks safe at #10 for at least 2 years.

        11) - Baby One More Time - Britney Spears (1999)

        1999 - 8,358,619 - 8,358,619 sold in 1999
        2000 - 9,981,434 - 1,622,815 sold in 2000
        2001 - 10,269,049 - 287,615 sold in 2001
        2002 - 10,416,070 - 147,021 sold in 2002
        2003 - 10,472,878 - 56,808 sold in 2003
        2004 - 10,507,000 - 34,122 sold in 2004
        2005 - 10,519,000 - 12,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 10,525,000 - 6,000 sold in 2006
        2007 - tbc

Virtually stopped selling and overtaken by The Beatles in 2006 losing it's place in the Top 10.

        12) - Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

        10,296,000 jan 2008

A new entry. Will add historical figures when I have them. Still selling strongly so should overtake Britney within 12-18 months.

        13) - Cracked Rear View Mirror - Hootie/Blowfish (1995)

        1995 - 7m - 7,000,000 sold in 1995
        1996 - 8.7m - 1,700,000 sold in 1996
        1997 - n/a
        1998 - 9.7m

        2006 - 10,123,000 - sold 20,000 in 2006
        2007 - tbc

        14) - Titanic - Soundtrack (1998)

        1998 - 9,330,000 - 9,330,000 sold in 1998
        1999 - 9,806,175 - 476,175 sold in 1999
        2000 - 9,897,900 - 91,725 sold in 2000
        2001 - 9,960,000 - 62,100 sold in 2001
        2002 - n/a

        2006 - 10,096,000 - 20,000 sold in 2006
        2007 - tbc

Sold only 20k in 2006, but enough to move up one place. Pushed back down to 14th in 2007 by Norah Jones.

        15) - Back Street Boys - Back Street Boys (1997)

        1997 - 1.3m - 1,300,000 sold in 1997
        1998 - 7m - 5,700,000 sold in 1998
        1999 - 9,258,265 - 2,300,000 sold in 1999
        2000 - n/a
        2001 - n/a
        2002 - n/a
        2003 - n/a
        2004 - 10,074,000
        2005 - 10,084,000 - 10,000 sold in 2005
        2006 - 10,091,000 - 7,000 sold in 2006
        2007 - tbc

Sales were so poor that is was overtaken by Titanic in 2006 and Norah Jones in 2007.

        16) - Marshall Mathers - Eminem (2000)

        2000 - 7,922,000 - 7,922,000 sold in 2000

        2006 - 10,010,000 - sold 91,000 in 2006
        2007 - tbc

        A new entry in 2006.

So 16 albums have scanned more than 10,000,000 in US stores.

None of the albums over 9m soundscan look likely to reach the 10m mark in 2008.

            • Celine Joins Exclusive Club:

Celine Dion tops the 50,000,000 mark in album sales during the Nielsen/SoundScan era, just five weeks after Mariah Carey reached that same milestone. Dion's total jumps to 50,010,000. Carey's jumps to 50,811,000.) These are the only female artists in the 50 million club. They're also the only female artists with five albums each on Nielsen/SoundScan's all-time list of the top 200 albums.

While being the second female artist to cross the 50,000,000 plateau is bound to take some of the luster off the achievement, it really shouldn't. And Dion is ahead of Carey in one key respect. Dion is the only woman with three albums in the top 50 of the Nielsen/SoundScan era (Falling Into You at #10, Let's Talk About Love at #22 and All The Way...A Decade Of Song at #44). Carey has just one in the top 50 (Daydream at #46).

Only two artists in Nielsen/SoundScan history have sold more albums than Carey and Dion-Garth Brooks, whose current total is 67,847,000 and the Beatles (56,247,000). All four of these artists first hit the chart before Nielsen/SoundScan set up shop in May 1991, so these totals don't take into account their entire histories. The Nielsen/SoundScan data doesn't include the first four months of Dion's chart history, the first 11 months of Carey's, the first two years of Brooks' and the first 27 years and four months of the Beatles'--during which time I have it on good authority that the group sold a fair number of records!

Yeah, but my point is that why does Tragic Kingdom fail to find a place in the list mentioned by Basil??

                                    REVEALING BRAXTON

                                    Hi Keith,

I'm a big Toni Braxton fan and just wanted to know if you could possibly tell me where she ranks in terms of best selling artists in history, both in R&B music and overall.

                                    Thank you so much,
                                    Marvin Phidd

                                    Hi Marvin,

As you are a big fan of Braxton's, I hope you were able to see her in Las Vegas during her long-running "Revealed" show at the Flamingo Hotel.

Unfortunately, her continuing undisclosed health issues forced the closure of the show yesterday (May 29). The show had been dark since April 7, when the singer was hospitalized due to chest pains.

The "Revealed" show opened in August 2006 and was slated to continue through August of this year.

Let's now focus on Braxton's album sales. Since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, Braxton has sold 14.5 million albums in the U.S.

That makes her the No. 111th biggest-selling artist overall and the sixth best-selling R&B female singer since 1991. Among female R&B singers, since 1991, only Mariah Carey (51 million), Mary J. Blige (21.4 million), Janet Jackson (19.7), Sade (16.5) and Alicia Keys (15.1) have sold more albums in the U.S. than Braxton.

information would be great. I have searched everywhere for the answer and thought you guys are the final word on such issues.

                                      Thanks for your time,
                                      Mark

                                      Hi Mark,

First, we have to be clear that this list is a ranking the "best" rappers, but rather for those that have sold the most albums in the United States.

Many would contend that some of the best rappers, in terms of artistic talent, may not sell very much.

For this list, we have compiled the top selling rap acts (solo or otherwise) based on their cumulative U.S. album sales since 1991 (when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data).

                                      1. Eminem (33 million)
                                      2. 2Pac (31.8 million)
                                      3. Jay-Z (28.8 million)
                                      4. Nelly (20.9 million)
                                      5. Beastie Boys (18.9 million)
                                      6. OutKast (17.3 million)
                                      7. DMX (16.5 million)
                                      8. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (16.4 million)
                                      9. 50 Cent (15.4 million)
                                      10. Dr. Dre (13.3 million)

                                          • "Come on Over" will most probably be overtaken in the next couple of years by "Metallica".

Not unless Shania's new album, released later this year, manages to push her catalogue sales back up to 100,000 or more.

Metallica haven't released a Greatest Hits - nor have AC/DC. These are probably the only major acts in the world that have no Greatest Hits.

Oasis always said they wouldn't release one but they did in the end.

well, it's not truly a Greatest Hits package, but one can argue the case of Who Made Who, as it has Hells Bells, You Shook Me All Night Long and For Those About To Rock, which are three of their biggest hits.

Who Made Who is a soundtrack to the Stephen King movie Maximum Overdrive. King is a huge fan and they allowed him to use 6 songs for the film and even wrote 3 new tracks for the soundtrack (the title track becoming a minor hit).

Anyway, an AC/DC album without Highway To Hell, TNT, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Back In Black can hardly be called a greatest hits album.

If they did release a greatest hits album I'm sure it will hurt catalog sales of their old albums, especially Back In Black, which is currently selling as a GH anyway.

As a fan I hope they will hold back any hits cd until they eventually retire. That would be a nice salute to they recording career.

I think both they and Metallica are very wise.

Anyway they both have new albums on the way with no Greatest Hits on the horizon. Looks like any such releases (if they ever happen) are years away.

Seems if you release a big selling Black album it rules out a Greatest Hits.
