  • I have posted the full Top M.Maker 50s gleaned from "Music Businness Weekly" to Lonnie recently! The Colindale Library had some missing from Feb/March 71. But with help from Disc and M.Echo's brief run of the Top 50s (13 March to 24 April 71) Lonnie has all but two of the MM Top 50s Sept 69 to May 71. I posted a Lot of MM Charts circa 1970 to 77 to Davetaylor. Maybe Dave can post them here!

      • If anyone is wondering why there was no Number 39 listed on the final Melody Maker Top 50 (First run) on 25 March 1967. It is due to the MM detecting that a certain number of records had `unusual` sales patterns! There were three on that week that the MM felt were `suspect` "Trafalgar Square" (Good-Time Losers) "Just What You Want" (John's Children) and "Love Makes Sweet Music" (Soft Machine) It was decided to draw lots to eliminate one of the three from the chart of week 25 March 67. The Soft Machine were the `Lucky Winners!!?` The MM then decided to only publish a Top 30 from 1 April 1967. They did still compile a Top 50 from April 67 onwards to check for other cases of `Hype`. Only the top 30 would be published in the MM from 1 April 1967.

        • Hi, and thanks again for the complete MM pop charts from the 50s & 60s. Just checked the 1969 charts carefully being astonished missing Vanity Fair's Early In The Morning. I think Early In The Morning first charted 9 August at No. 15 (listed at this position by mistake is Peter Sarstedt's Frozen Orange Juice). So from this date Frozen Orange Juice must be replaced by Early In The Morning.

Are these charts correct. It seems strange that 'Son of a Preacher Man' is climbing back up the charts again in the MM when not in any of the others.

              • Very observant David1956.

The record entered should have been Soul Sister Brown Sugar by Sam and Dave rather than Dusty's classic.

I hesitate to think if other mistakes exist, but feel free to find them if they do for the benefit of others!

                • Dave,
only recently started to investigate the UK Chart History.
As such, YES, I am interested in the complete set BBC charts pre-69.
Please advise how to get access to that part of UK history.

                  rgds,
                  Arttrend

You shouldn`t however refer to an "official chart", before 11th Feb 69, because there wasn`t one, until the BBC join forces with the BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU on that date. It was only the decision of the compilers of the Guiness books, to use the Record Retailer charts before that, and they were never excepted then. If you would like a complete set of the BBC chart before 1969, get in touch with me, and I will supply them, as featured on PICK OF THE POPS and TOP OF THE POPS. Cheers Dave.

                  • I will be posting updated `Chart History` ASAP on `Chart Analysis`

                    • I recently got a 9th February 1963 edition of Melody Maker. Inside was an article-rebutting criticisms of MM chart by `Daily Express` newspaper! Part of the article stated that the MM chart was compiled from carefully logged sales from 245 retailers and verified by each shop manager. The MM chart itself `was` audited- the paper stated that Middlesex County Council provided a team of auditors for this purpose!

This new data is now in my most recent posting of "CHART HISTORY" article in CHART ANALYSIS forum! Alan.

Those last charts of MM (1968 and 1969) show a top 50, however MM only listed top 30's at least from September 6 to the end of 1969.
What is the reason for this

Melody Maker believed that there was strong evidence of records being bought in to the chart (that is, they were being hyped in to the chart) and in a front page article in 1968 explained that in order to counter this that from that point on they would only be publishing a top 30 although they would still compile a top 50, presumably so they could keep a check on potential false sales patterns for records below number 30.

It was April 1967 that MM announced they were cutting published chart back to a top 30 -though they still compiled a top 50 to regulate it. The MM top 50 was published in Trade mag "Music Business Weekly" from Sept 1969 to Feb 1971 after that `Disc` ran MM top 50 to April 1971 when MM only compiled and published a top 30 thereafter.

Thank you Kjell. I have been quiet recently as my Mom died in May and I have really missed her.
