      • Here are some chart peaks that I and 3 other Australian chart enthusiasts have obtained directly from ARIA, from the period where positions 51-100 are not publicly available (from the first in-house produced ARIA chart, week ending June 26, 1988 to the date the first ARIA report featuring the full top 100 was available via subscription [January 14, 1990]), and positions outside the top 100 (which have never been publicly available). Some peaks are also taken from information printed in the Chartifacts section of the ARIA report (where they write about new entries in the top 100, sometimes including previous peaks by the artist):

selected peaks between 51-100 between 26th June 1988 (first ARIA-produced chart) and 7th January 1990:

from the 'Breakers' list (the weekly list of the 5 highest-charting singles that haven't yet entered the top 50 [in most instances], and are usually moving up the chart or holding steady - as printed on the top 50 chart that was distributed to music stores). See the excellent blog http://chartbeat.blogspot.com.au/search ... ears%20ago where these are detailed.

          • Anyone know how the yearly Australian Chart was compiled in the mid 80s?

I know the weekly chart was compiled on combined sales from all the States similar to the UK but what about the year-end one?

My understanding was that unlike the UK it was similar to that of the US in that instead of total sales being counted the #1record received a certain number of points each week, the #2 one less etc and then a record's total points over its chart career formed the basis of the yearly top 100?

            Can anyone confirm this?

Two Aus chart enthusiasts I've been in contact with have contacted David Kent, who compiled the Australian Music Report chart (originally the Kent Report), which ARIA licensed until mid 1988. I'm 99% certain (I was certain, but I can't find the email where it was detailed) one of them asked him about the compilation of the year-end charts, and they were based on chart runs rather than actual sales. That's why, e.g. Bruce Springsteen's 'Dancing In the Dark' was the #1 single for 1984 despite only peaking at #5 and spending (from memory) 11 weeks in the top 10 - but it had a very long chart life.

ARIA then took over compiling the 'official' chart, and their year-end charts are based on sales. That being said, there are some very questionable year-end charts in the early to mid 90s - e.g. Technotronic's 'Get Up!' (#7) and Glenn Medeiros's 'She Ain't Worth It' (#8) missing from the 1990 year-end top 100 chart, Ce Ce Peniston's 'Finally' (#8) and Kate Bush's 'Rocket Man' (#2) being placed #99 and #100 respectively on the 1992 year-end chart and peaking much lower than e.g. Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'Suck My Kiss' (peaking at #8 but only spending 8 weeks in the top 50, and being placed at #60 on the year-end chart), and Pearl Jam's 'Animal' (#30, 11 weeks in the top 50) being placed at #51 on the 1994 year-end chart.

I was thinking that ARIA may have based their year-end chart in the early-mid 90s on shipment figures provided by record companies; but that can't be true since there were instances of platinum-certified singles being ranked lower than gold-certified singles on the year-end charts.

It wasn't until late March 1997 that the ARIA chart was based on point-of-sale electronic tracking, which no doubt helped make the chart more accurate.

              • It wasn't until 2001 that the Year End charts were based on the data collected by ARIAnet. I remember querying why "Stronger" by Britney Spears appeared at #85 on the 2000 YE chart, when Madonna's "Don't Tell Me" didn't appear at all (even though it had ranked higher than "Stronger" every week since they had both debuted in the same week - i.e. according to ARIAnet, Madonna had easily outsold Britney in that period of time). I was told that the YE chart was based on actual sales figures provided by the record companies (as opposed to shipment figures). From 2001 onwards, they used their own data to compile the YE charts.

Definitely based on points in the mid 80s. David Kent went back and recalculated all of his Year End charts almost a decade ago with new rules, by which he only allowed a single to appear on the Year End chart in the year in which it first charted (e.g. Madonna's "Like A Virgin" was moved from being in the 1985 Top 25 to the 1984 chart, since that's when it first charted). He used all of his original data from the 70s and 80s to compile these new charts (which, as Nugs has pointed out, were compiled based on chart history, rather than sales data).

I guess since the weekly charts were based on a ranking system (rather than a hard sales system), it was more straightforward for David and his staff to devise a new points system for calculating Year End charts. I'd much rather know what the real chart was, though.

                  • Is it impossible to have the top 100 chart run from 1990?
I am interested in Mariah Carey and Spice Girls (plus solo).

                                • The ARIA Report featured a Hit Seekers chart from 1994, containing releases by artists who had not previously reached the top 50, ranked in order of their sales. These charts reveal some singles that were charting outside the top 100 on those particular weeks. I've compiled a list below for 1994. The first chart was a top 25, but it then switched to a top 20:

TW = this week, LW = last week, entries are listed by artist - title.

Week ending 16th January 1994. These singles were not in the top 100 that week:

That's all I've got at this point.

The inclusion of Live's 'I Alone' on these charts seems to be a mistake, as 'Selling the Drama' had entered the top 50 previously.

By the way..Nelson...according to your old posts album "Celine Dion" is gold in Australia...But my friend couldn't find that info in ARIA weekly reports...are you sure it is gold?
Sure, the album has been certified gold in 17 december 1992 in Australia, and Celine received his gold certification during his press conference in Canada in 17 december 1992.
