  • Irish Chart performance of Eurovision songs

With the dreaded Eurovision Song Contest almost upon us a time to relect on Ireland's fascination with Eurovision records. Once a guaranteed way to get a hit record, lately it's taken a high profile TV show (You're A Star) to make hits out of very ordinary songs sung by average singers. Even the winners of the Eurovision these days seldom make a huge impact on the charts.

First off, Ireland's very own Eurovision entries

Corinne Hermes' performance is understated on www.irishcharts.ie and in the book - her second week in, at number 12, was overlooked:

I thought we had that one on the "corrections" thread, but maybe not.

I should also have mentioned that RIVERDANCE by Bill Whelan, which is the all time chart champ in Ireland, (#1 for 18 weeks) began life as a eurovision filler. It was the "real" winner of the 1994 contest. So I guess it should really be included in the above list.

You are right Edimes. Thanks for spotting that . Original post amended. I guess she became the 2nd artist after Cliff Richard to have 2 Eurovision hits in Ireland. The Swarbriggs and Johnny Logan also managed to do it. And you could make a case for Vicky leandros although both her hits were with the same song, and at the same time.

...and you can now add Finland to the list of other countries!

Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah is the 2nd highest new entry in this weeks Top 50 coming in (and equalling Brian Kennedy) at no 4 just behind Nelly Furtado!

                    Hello,
'Waterloo', by ABBA, should be Listed twice now. It was also a Number 20 UK Hit, in 2004:,

                    29/5/04 WATERLOO - ABBA - 20 3wks

This thread covers the chart performance of Eurovision entries in Ireland rather than the UK........

.......but "Waterloo" did make it back into the Irish chart in 2004 as well for two more weeks (#33 on 20/05/04, then #41 on 27/05/04) ! These would bring its total weeks in the Irish charts to 11.

Just noticed that while Jacqueline Boyer failed to chart in Ireland with France's 1960 winner Tom Pillibi she did make a belated chart debut there in April 2001 as guest vocalist on Brendan Keeley's no 11 hit Still In Love!
