    TOP OF THE POPS PERFORMANCES
    (THE 564 HITS THAT NEVER WERE: 1964 - 1979)

This is an attempt to list every performance on Top of the Pops that subsequently never became chart hits and therefore not make the national Top 50 or 75 as utilised by Guinness Hit Singles. However this list is not exhaustive, as data was at times difficult to locate. Also TOTP did not use a definitive chart source until February 1969 when the Record Retailer chart as used by Guinness was employed; prior to this the TOTP chart was compiled using various chart sources to create an overall Top 20! In the early days of TOTP, some tracks performed were from EP or album charts and briefly around 1971 - an album slot was introduced, whereby an artist would play one or two of their current tracks. For an overall picture, these have all been included, although obviously they were not specifically single releases. I have indicated any of these throughout with an asterisk * - and where possible listed the source. Dates listed are the TOTP transmission dates - which were usually a Thursday. Figures after the title are American chart positions. If they made the Billboard Top 40, the letters US precede the figure. All of the UK catalogue numbers have been located as well. I have used a great deal of my research from the excellent book by Pete Seaton and Richard Down - ‘Kaleidoscope British Television Music & Variety Guide: Second Edition (2006), which has proved invaluable! By 1980, all performances were generally chart hits anyway so this is why our research only covers this period.

    Thanks for the list.

I wonder why TOTP featured so many non-chart releases? Given the amount of chart hits that could have been featured in any particular week it seems strange that they chose to play so many that weren't in the chart (though I notice a number of these did make the Breakers chart). I can't even remember TOTP ever featuring non chart hits and I watched it each and every week without fail from 1974 onwards. Obviously they did hence this list plus the fact that I have the 01/01/76 edition of TOTP on my computer (taken from youtube) and it features new acts who were yet to chart - the Bo Flyers and Glyder singles mentioned above as well as Forever And Ever by Slik which did chart and went on to reach number 1.

Also, given that TOTP had an audience above 10m in the 70s it is a surprise that once these singles were featured that it didn't project them into the charts unless stock just wasn't in stores for the Saturday boost in sales that the programme used to cause. It would also be interesting to see how many non chart songs featured on TOTP which then subsequently charted (eg Forever And Ever by Slik which seems to have been released a few days after the TOTP appearance and which charted within a fortnight of appearing on TOTP).

If asked to "name a record that was featured on Top of the Pops but failed to become a hit?", my immediate instinctive answer would have been "The Goodies - A Man's Best Friend Is His Duck"! I see that's on the list, quite near the end.

I wondered too about the basis of selection for "Top of the Pops" back then - it seemed rather unfair that certain new releases could be included, while others that were already selling well were rarely or never featured. While there seemed to be a general rule (maybe revoked much later on) that no record other than the current number one would be featured in two consecutive weeks, it made more sense when the the line-up later typically became all of the highest climbers and new entries not featured in the previous week - it was then very rare for hits not in the top forty to qualify. I think maybe one by the Rolling Stones did once, however?
But, as can be seen, such a promotion was certainly not always a guarantee of future success - and there definitely continued to be tracks featured on "Top Of The Pops" in the early 1980's that hadn't yet reached the top forty. Some of them never did! Four examples from 1981 were:

WIDE AWAKE IN A DREAM - BARRY BIGGS
PLAY TO WIN - HEAVEN 17
HOLD MY HAND - KEN DODD
      SWEET DREAMS - ELVIS COSTELLO

...but I can't think offhand of any others from this period that missed the Top 75 completely. (Excluding tracks that were just briefly in Jonathan King or John Peel's occasional features on the US chart or the Europarade - like "Rondo Russo" by Berdien Stenberg!) There might be one or two later instances of this happening, though.

During my TOTP heyday - mid/late 80s onwards - wasn't there a far stricter criteria for featured acts? Only hits from the Top 40, only climbers or ne entries, and apart from the Number 1, a reccord could not be featured to weeks running?

Of course, as the late 90s was the era of debuting at peak position and falling, the rules had to be relaxed considerably. But I did not realise it was like that earlier, too

Top Of The Pops' glory days were prior to the nineties. I remember that in 1990 the ratings were very low and Alan Jones blame it on the lack of quality acts. He made fun of Bombalurina (who had a number one hit that year) on Record Mirror magazine.

I know of two acts that appeared on TOTP but only managed a minor Top 75 positions:

The Human Leagie with "Rock'n'Roll" and Karel Fialka with "The Eyes Have It" in 1980.

Also, that year Ultravox appeared with "Sleepwalk" while in the 30s of the chart but didn't get higher that No. 29. That's the case with John Foxx too: during 1980-81 he appeared three times on TOTP, with "Underpass", "No One Driving" and "Europe After the Rain" - and haven't been able to manage even a Top 30 placing!

Also Gary Numan - well, when "This Wreckage" didn't get past No. 20 in late 1980 it was understandable as that wasn't a very commercial record. But in 1982 he wasn't able to even sell well with regular TOTP appearances of his singles!

My guess is that radio support had as big a role as the TOTP appearance itself - without BBC rotation chances were the single won't be able to have a needed support and become forgotten soon.

Like so many people on this forum, I have been watching on BBC4 TOTP 1977. Here's one that was missed from this list of non-hits on TOTP:

05 May 77 Mac & Katy Kissoon - Your Love (State STAT 48)

Therefore there are 566 tracks in this listing, and 44 from 1977 alone.

Fascinating list. It would be interesting to see the eighties as well, if anyone has them, as there were a few non-hits dotted around. French singer Dick Rivers claims in his autobiography to have appeared on TOTP singing his revival of Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman", which was released late in 1979, but I assume there must be others?

I have a list of each episode of TOTP and who was featured and I can't find any entry for Dick Rivers. In fact I hadn't even heard of him until now!

I read somewhere that Allan Smethurst a.k.a. The Singing Postman once performed on Top of the Pops but as far as I am aware he never did, so maybe this could apply here! The track was released in the U.K. in May 1979 on Scotia (UK) record label, catalogue number SCO18. Also on this label was another Dick - Mr. Emery!!! I once saw Mr. Rivers on a Beatles show covering one of their songs, though I cannot recollect which one. I used the reference book from South Shields library to help with this research originally along with the Popscene website - and as I suspect from your Newcastle logo you may be familiar with this area too! Anyway hope that helps a little bit.

Yes it's stated in the 14 Edition of British Hit Singles page 74 that the Singing Postman was on a 1966 Top of The Pops! I could not find it in the published list by Popscene either.
We had a discussion on this in the TOTP thread.

I purchased a copy of ‘Kaleidoscope British Television Music & Variety Guide: Second Edition (2006) yesterday - not cheap at £29! I will look in it to see if it mentions him!

At last, someone with some insight beyond the supposedly all-powerful TOTP. Well done Passing Strang! On the Haven messageboards last year there were numerous posts claiming that TOTP influence was fundamental in many hits, to the point that chart history was almost being re-written! Well of course the show's impact wasn't negligible but you are correct, Radio One and (to a lesser extent post-deregulation) the Independent stations like Capital, Hallam, BRMB etc. were also key to 'breaking' a record. And if it wasn't 'popular' nor 'commercial' being on the telly simply would have made little difference. As this great research list shows.

I also commend Wranglerjeans for the time and effort that went into this list. It really does prove that appearing on the programme (and let's face it there were some choices that seem bizarre in hindsight but it was also trying to be a mainstream entertainment too) was no guarantee of chart success. Certainly I too have watched some the current re-runs from the 70s and smiled at how little they then 'bounced'.

If it weren't no good it weren't gonna sell. Simples!

The reason a none hit act was selected for TOTP before the 80's was down to "pluggers". This strange breed of men were employed by the record companies to ensure records got played on the radio and were aired on TV shows, such as TOTP. EMI's main man was Eric Hall. He said that one TOTP performance was better than 500 radio plays. Eric was so important that Cliff Richard once joked his expense account was platinum! It was never left to chance. Top of The Pops was like a military operation, with strict rules, because that was the background for those who ran the show. Pete Waterman recalls that you couldn't even move a drum kit. It had to be done by a stage hand.

Having a hit is nothing whatsoever to do with if a record is good Crap records become hits all the time. Good records fail to make the top sellers. Some of the none hits did make the breakers lists of the charts. But the reason that many failed is that the charts were based on a sample of under 250 shops and some stores refused to take part in the UK charts. In reality records featured on TOTP would have made the charts and also climbed if the current system of chart calculation had been employed in the 60's and 70's.

Interesting discussion. With respect to Dick Rivers, I'll check his autobiography again and see if he gives a date. As far as the comment by Wranglerjeans about a Beatles cover, this refers to the 1965 TV Special "The Songs of Lennon and McCartney", which featured a host of people tackling the band's repertoire. Rivers delivered "Things We Said Today" in French as "Ces mots qu'on oublie un jour". It can be found on his 1964 LP alternately known as "Dick" or "Je ne suis plus rien sans toi". The clip from the show is on Youtube, complete with jokey introduction from John and Paul. All thing considered, he does a reasonable job.

Just finished watching the Sex Pistols documentary, "The Filth And The Fury", and apparently Eric was responsible for getting the group onto the Bill Grundy Today programme, and thus instrumental in that all too famous foul mouthed interview.

So it was not just Top of the Pops where Eric and other pluggers weaved their spell, it was other programmes as well.

I was more of an Old Grey Whistle Test fan myself. Wonder how much plugging went on there?

Eric Hall managed to get the Sex Pistols onto the Bill Grundy Today programme as a last minute replacement for Queen (who were also on EMI) who were meant to be promoting 'Somebody To Love' but couldn't make the programme at the last minute due to flight problems.

Ironically a few months later both Queen and the Sex Pistols were in the same recording studios recording what would become the 'News Of The World' and 'Never Mind The Bollocks' albums. Sid Vicious was extremely drunk and aggressive, mocking Freddie Mercury (asking Mercury "have you succeeded in bringing ballet to the masses yet?" in a loud and mocking tone) when Freddie grabbed a hold of Vicious and threw him out of the studio Queen were using! Freddie also called Sid "Simon Ferocious" which further incensed Vicious! The other Pistols were sensible enough to keep out of Freddie's way, he had a reputation for being able to handle himself, something Vicious appeared not to know...

In another twist, The Sex Pistols would be playing the alternative national anthem, God Save The Queen, at their gigs, while Freddie and the boys would have the proper national anthem playing out over the speakers at the end of their gigs!!!!!!!

Does not surprise me that there was tension between the groups, the pistols probably regarded Queen as more belonging to the old school of rock. And Queen would surely have regarded themselves as better musicians and song writers than the Pistols.

Must be quite a few stories like the one relayed by Robbie above in the turbulent world of rock and roll.

Looking at the posts of one poster in particular on these forums, a poster who seems to post what I deem to be some bizarre conclusions in the Beatles thread especially.

Apart from the fact that he has definately done some posts on this forum under the influence of drink, which is not very professional at all, of course, but he has also drawn up some very strange conclusions in other threads throughout this forum.
And this is one such thread! Note that he does not even have the integrity to come back to graham76man and admit that he was wrong!

Not at all convinced that the "facts" put forward by Topicel are to be relied on in anyway, as this thread shows. For a man who claims to know a great deal about the record business I find it somewhat surprising that he does not even know about record pluggers.

Many people believe in the "facts" Topicel presents, but he seems to me to be a poster who does not think before he types, as his post on this thread shows.

A case of the blind leading the blind, in my view.
