  • Few new clips turned up:

Christmas edition of the top 20, but only a few clips, including the intro of "I Don't Want Your Love" topping the previous week's chart, Steve Winwood debuting at #18 with "Holding On", and a couple pre-commercial break clips flashing back to a year earlier (George Harrison on his way to the top with "Got My Mind Set On You" and Prince debuting with "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"). Adam Curry says there is one more debut to go (which can be assumed to be "When the Children Cry"). There is however a good chunk of the top 100 of '88.

Here's a bunch of clips from '87-'88, including "Learning to Fly" from Pink Floyd in at #17 in supposedly its 2nd week given the Exclusive logo, which would mean Belinda Carlisle would be #18 instead.

As a little bonus, an older video from October, dated by world premieres from Huey Lewis, George Michael, and Keith Richards, and a few clips from the top 100 of all time, which had a couple odd choices: "Lost in You" from Rod Stewart at #80 (would be #27 for the year), and "Hungry Like the Wolf" from Duran Duran down at #79.

Wow. "Ghost Town" was already on as of 12/10/89. Perhaps it debuted at 20, advanced to 19 then stalled at 19?

Sorry. I was addressing sdizda who basically reposted what you posted. Hence my quoting of your post. Not the first time sdizda has posted something already posted not too far back IIRC.

                  • Dope. Thanks. Remembered the wrong classic college rock hit in the 30s haha.

Candyman at 280 is a little weird given he was a one-hit wonder who wasn't in standard rotation for that long. And that's saying nothing of the weird shuffling going on, where usual suspects ended up suspiciously low, and video rankings by artist were mixed up as well (Cheap Trick's "The Flame" lower than "Don't Be Cruel" for one). INXS was among the least bamboozled, even compared to Madonna and Bon Jovi near the top.

So much for Salt n Pep making it. Van Hagar did make it at 13 the following week where Nothing Else Matters debuted on that episode.

Ironically, since I’m American, the June 1996 one was the 2nd week of the then new design and format until that ended in 1998. The old one used before that was used last on Memorial Day weekend of that year. The one from March 92 was in its 4th week after the tarot cards were retired.

                      • Actually the just posted week was officially the second to last week of the XAOS produced computer graphics. The non-interstitial graphics debuted two weeks later.

                        • Heya, I thought I'd share some of the countdowns I have saved from looking through old newspapers. All of them are from 1984 and 1985 (keep in mind some of them are only top 10s and that some dates are approximations; I am also unsure about the order of the dates, esp. in early 1984).

                          1984:

March 23, 1984 [unsure about the date of this one and the following weeks, this one could be April, but another poster did say that Against All Odds would hit #1 around this period]:

                          01) Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)
                          02) The Cars - You Might Think
                          03) Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now

Overall, I see some weird chart movement, esp. 1984. Then again, I might have messed up on the dates. Either way, I hope they are of help

                              • Thank you so much for all those lists.I used to watch the countdown religiously back in the day and there are only 2 notable discrepancies I see with your charts. The first being June 1st-1984.The chart had Rush -Distant Early Warning at number 6.That video never made it into the top 10 at all.I want to say it peaked at 13 at the highest. And July 6-1984 the chart had Denice Williams-Lets Hear it For The Boy at number 20-on its way out.I know the countdown never began with a descending video but always a debut at number 20.Again thank you so much for the lists.I really appreciate them and enjoyed looking at them.

                                • Up until mid 88 there were quite a few descending #20 videos (i e “”The Way You Make Me Feel” by MJ, “Velcro Fly” by ZZ Top). The only one since then was “Right Now” by Van Halen.

Fun pointless fact: there were newer vids that missed the cutoff date for the year’s VMAs and were up for following year that made the countdown before older, current eligible videos did, but no case was so curious as “Rain” by Madonna, which premiered on MTV on the last week of ‘93 VMA eligibility, and “If” by Janet Jackson, which premiered the following week, making it a ‘94 nominee. Both videos debuted that same weekend just days after the latter premiered, yet “If” managed the higher debut at #14.

                                  • Thanks for the correction.I could have sworn the countdown never kicked off with a descending video.I guess I stand corrected. It was still awesome to see all those old archived lists from 84-85

Nice to see Rush have another one besides Big Money since they’re my favorite classic rock band. Roll The Bones on MTV was my intro to them when I was 11. I got into them 12 years ago. RIP Neil.

Would not surprise me at all. It was number one for 86 and won video of the year and I’ve seen them play it a lot. Regarding that update for a June 1989 recently, I wonder if that live version of In Your Eyes made top 20. I remember first hearing that song on radio the same year when I was 8 or 9 when it got a 2nd life due to Say Anything. Oddly enough, another Cameron Crowe movie did that years later with Jerry Maguire making Secret Garden by the boss more popular than in 1995. That went to 16 on MTV in 95.

The order seems to be a bit off with some artists as Azul stated, like I'm surprised how Man in the Mirror placed higher than Beat It for example.

I've never heard of the Peace Choir video before as it didn't make the weekly top 20 let alone year end list, I looked it up on Youtube.

Here's a few snubs that placed kinda highly on the MTV 500 some 6 years later:

Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right To Party
Go Gos - Our Lips Are Sealed
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (understandable though as they didn't become relevant for a few more years)
                                                  Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
                                                  Toni Basil - Mickey
USA For Africa - We Are the World
Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
David Bowie - China Girl & Let's Dance
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It
Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire
                                                  J. Geils Band - Centerfold

Oddly, "Into the Groove" apparently didn't crack the top20 (even though it was in heavy rotation at MTV for months). yet it was No. 212 on that top 300 countdown. No/ denying its popularity.

                                                    • "Into The Groove" was never officially released as a single. Besides, with "Material Girl" overlapping "Crazy for You" a fair bit, there was enough Madonna to go around for a little while.

I would agree about the odd omissions on the Top 300 of All Time that would show up on the MTV 500. Conversely there were some that I'd personally put on the latter as well. I do remember in Nov '91 "Centerfold" was on a "50 Most Talked About Music Videos" special (no videos were ranked).

BTW, this just showed up for the second week of February '89:

Living Colour moves up 3 places to #16 (Adam thanks them for hosting Mardi Gras the preceding week) and Mike + the Mechanics debut at #15.

Living Colour moves up 3 places to #16 (Adam thanks them for hosting Mardi Gras the preceding week) and Mike + the Mechanics debut at #15.
ITG was the B side to Angel which, ironically, had no music video. Technically, it’s not a real video either since it’s just a compilation of scenes from Desperately Seeking Susan like how Footloose was the same since a Kenny Loggins is not in the video.

                                                        • You know there's a bit of incongruency with MTV's early no non-lipsynched vid clause that left vids like the concept version of "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush off the channel. I guess Kevin Bacon's dance montage was that good of a selling point.

BTW, I wonder by how little or how much "Infatuation" missed the year end top 20, since it had a respectable run only hurt by its first and last weeks at 20/19. Manfred Mann, the #20 video of the year I'm not seeing anywhere. Then again, it turns out Scandal had a really good run (on par with Night Ranger and "When Doves Cry" from Prince if not better) and ended up with #19.

It was a high ranking mainstay on future all time lists though, so I was always surprised it was so low on the year end countdown.
