I have a feeling Ghostbusters was #1 the missing week before "Missing You" took the top spot. (IIRC the former was run during a #1's weekend montage.)

ETA: Throwing in a guess that "Mercedes Boy" by Pebbles might have made it on to the chart for a week at #20 on 7/15/88 instead of "Missed Opportunity" by Hall & Oates. The former was peaking on Billboard and in heavy rotation on MTV, albeit in its last week.

For the week of June 29th, 1984, I read in The Miami News that Rod Stewart went from 12 to 8 and Prince jumped 9 spots from 19, so it would look like this so far:

    June 29, 1984:

    01) Billy Idol - Eyes without a Face (3rd week at #1)
    08) Rod Stewart - Infatuation
    10) Prince and The Revolution - When Doves Cry

Are there any spreadsheet templates for music charts that also tabulate points based on chart performance? Want to do something for the top 20.

True, I saw it on one of the Starz Encore channels many years ago.

The Peace Choir was a response to the Gulf War that premiered the day before. Weirdly enough there were a few artists who did both that and Voices that Care.

BTW, I wonder by how little or how much "Infatuation" missed the year end top 20, since it had a respectable run only hurt by its first and last weeks at 20/19. Manfred Mann, the #20 video of the year I'm not seeing anywhere. Then again, it turns out Scandal had a really good run (on par with Night Ranger and "When Doves Cry" from Prince if not better) and ended up with #19.

I wonder how "Legs" ended up at #15 when it appears it only peaked at #7 while bouncing around the 10 spot for a while. It was a high ranking mainstay on future all time lists though, so I was always surprised it was so low on the year end countdown.

I would agree about the odd omissions on the Top 300 of All Time that would show up on the MTV 500. Conversely there were some that I'd personally put on the latter as well. I do remember in Nov '91 "Centerfold" was on a "50 Most Talked About Music Videos" special (no videos were ranked).

BTW, this just showed up for the second week of February:

Living Colour moves up 3 places to #16 (Adam thanks them for hosting Mardi Gras the preceding week) and Mike + the Mechanics debut at #15.

RokinRobinOfLocksley I think I recall that countdown. That, or maybe even a top 500 from some point in the early-to-mid- '90s.

Oddly, "Into the Groove" apparently didn't crack the top20 (even though it was in heavy rotation at MTV for months). yet it was No. 212 on that top 300 countdown. No/ denying its popularity.

Nice work on posting the top 300 @RockinRobinofLocksley

The order seems to be a bit off with some artists as Azul stated, like I'm surprised how Man in the Mirror placed higher than Beat It for example.

I've never heard of the Peace Choir video before as it didn't make the weekly top 20 let alone year end list, I looked it up on Youtube.

Here's a few snubs that placed kinda highly on the MTV 500 some 6 years later:

Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right To Party
Go Gos - Our Lips Are Sealed
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (understandable though as they didn't become relevant for a few more years)
    Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
    Toni Basil - Mickey
USA For Africa - We Are the World
Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
David Bowie - China Girl & Let's Dance
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It
Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire
    J. Geils Band - Centerfold

Would not surprise me at all. It was number one for 86 and won video of the year and I’ve seen them play it a lot. Regarding that update for a June 1989 recently, I wonder if that live version of In Your Eyes made top 20. I remember first hearing that song on radio the same year when I was 8 or 9 when it got a 2nd life due to Say Anything. Oddly enough, another Cameron Crowe movie did that years later with Jerry Maguire making Secret Garden by the boss more popular than in 1995. That went to 16 on MTV in 95.

I'm curious if "I Can't Hold Back" from Survivor peaked at #2 or if it hit #1 in one of those missing weeks. It's one of my favorite songs.

Nice to see Rush have another one besides Big Money since they’re my favorite classic rock band. Roll The Bones on MTV was my intro to them when I was 11. I got into them 12 years ago. RIP Neil.

Up until mid 88 there were quite a few descending #20 videos (i e “”The Way You Make Me Feel” by MJ, “Velcro Fly” by ZZ Top). The only one since then was “Right Now” by Van Halen.

Fun pointless fact: there were newer vids that missed the cutoff date for the year’s VMAs and were up for following year that made the countdown before older, current eligible videos did, but no case was so curious as “Rain” by Madonna, which premiered on MTV on the last week of ‘93 VMA eligibility, and “If” by Janet Jackson, which premiered the following week, making it a ‘94 nominee. Both videos debuted that same weekend just days after the latter premiered, yet “If” managed the higher debut at #14.

Heya, I thought I'd share some of the countdowns I have saved from looking through old newspapers. All of them are from 1984 and 1985 (keep in mind some of them are only top 10s and that some dates are approximations; I am also unsure about the order of the dates, esp. in early 1984).

    1984:

March 23, 1984 [unsure about the date of this one and the following weeks, this one could be April, but another poster did say that Against All Odds would hit #1 around this period]:

Overall, I see some weird chart movement, esp. 1984. Then again, I might have messed up on the dates. Either way, I hope they are of help

Actually the just posted week was officially the second to last week of the XAOS produced computer graphics. The non-interstitial graphics debuted two weeks later.

Candyman at 280 is a little weird given he was a one-hit wonder who wasn't in standard rotation for that long. And that's saying nothing of the weird shuffling going on, where usual suspects ended up suspiciously low, and video rankings by artist were mixed up as well (Cheap Trick's "The Flame" lower than "Don't Be Cruel" for one). INXS was among the least bamboozled, even compared to Madonna and Bon Jovi near the top.

A weird mix of 8/29/92 and 9/5/92, with 7 and 6 from the former and the rest (sans 3) from the latter, overdubbed in foreign language:

So much for Salt n Pep making it. Van Hagar did make it at 13 the following week where Nothing Else Matters debuted on that episode.

Ironically, since I’m American, the June 1996 one was the 2nd week of the then new design and format until that ended in 1998. The old one used before that was used last on Memorial Day weekend of that year. The one from March 92 was in its 4th week after the tarot cards were retired.
