Here is I think the definitive chart research of all of the tracks never featured in Guinness Hit Singles up to 1969.
NON-GUINNESS HITS OF THE 1950’S & 1960’S
When the BRMB (British Market Research Bureau) took over the Record Retailer chart on 15th February 1969, this was generally taken to be the official chart. Prior to this, the Record Retailer began publishing a Top 50 and a separate EP chart on 10th March 1960. The period between has been open to some consternation as many titles made other charts but not Record Retailer. The decision by Guinness Hit Singles to use this source throughout the 1960’s has been probably taken on the assumption of more chart positions – hence the Top 50. The following lists below from New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, Disc & Music Echo charts of that era. We have also included data from the beginning of these other charts where applicable from the 1950’s up to February 1969. In the Guinness Book of Hit Singles, the charts for the 1950’s used were from New Musical Express which began publishing them from 14th November 1952. Comparing other chart sources from the 1950’s – Record Mirror which began publishing charts from January 1955, Melody Maker publishing Top 20’s from April 1956 and Disc magazine which started publishing them from February 1958.
These lists denote those records that crept into the lower (and sometimes higher) reaches of these charts not recognised by the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles from this period. Melody Maker’s chart when it reverted back to a Top 30 on 1st April 1967 did not register another `non-Guinness’ hit. In the early days, many charts often charted B-sides to a single separately. If these are not featured in Guinness, we have also included these. No EP’s from the Record Retailer era have been included as most of those that hit the charts were also included in their own EP chart which ran from 10th March 1960 until 2nd December 1967.
On a couple of occasions a record would be a major hit years after achieving a placing first time around in other charts. An example is Al Martino’s “Spanish Eyes” which got to 41 in Melody Makers chart on original release in 1966. Because the gap between this and its eventual Top 10 place in 1973 is so pronounced, its original minor placing is included – these are all highlighted throughout by an asterisk *. Numbers in brackets after the above information indicate position reached on Billboard Hot 100 chart, those preceded by ‘US’ denoting Top 40 American hit.
MELODY MAKER
Chart commenced on 7 April 1956 as a Top 20. It became a Top 30 on 14 April 1962 and then a Top 50 on 15 September 1962. Chart reverted back to a Top 30 on 1 April 1967.

NON-GUINNESS HITS OF THE 1980’s & EARLY 1990’s: 1983 – 1994 FROM NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS CHRONOLOGY
Continuing on with our look at tracks which made other charts, but not Guinness Hit Singles, we now list the remainder of the 1980’s and into the 1990’s, when for the first time since 1956, NME decided to expand their charts from a Top 30 to a Top 50 in April 1983. This was probably due to the fact that Record Retailer, as used by Guinness expanded their chart in January 1983 from a Top 75 to a Top 100, although Guinness took the decision to exclude this data and continue as a Top 75 - as they have to this day. As several of these tracks below also made positions 76 to 100 in Record Retailer, we indicate these too, as they therefore never made Guinness Hit Singles. Information listed as date of chart entry, title, act, Billboard chart position and UK Independent chart hit (where applicable). The titles in bold only charted in New Musical Express.
