  • Complete list of Non-Guinness hit singles: 1952 - 1969

Here is I think the definitive chart research of all of the tracks never featured in Guinness Hit Singles up to 1969.

    NON-GUINNESS HITS OF THE 1950’S & 1960’S

When the BRMB (British Market Research Bureau) took over the Record Retailer chart on 15th February 1969, this was generally taken to be the official chart. Prior to this, the Record Retailer began publishing a Top 50 and a separate EP chart on 10th March 1960. The period between has been open to some consternation as many titles made other charts but not Record Retailer. The decision by Guinness Hit Singles to use this source throughout the 1960’s has been probably taken on the assumption of more chart positions – hence the Top 50. The following lists below from New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, Disc & Music Echo charts of that era. We have also included data from the beginning of these other charts where applicable from the 1950’s up to February 1969. In the Guinness Book of Hit Singles, the charts for the 1950’s used were from New Musical Express which began publishing them from 14th November 1952. Comparing other chart sources from the 1950’s – Record Mirror which began publishing charts from January 1955, Melody Maker publishing Top 20’s from April 1956 and Disc magazine which started publishing them from February 1958.

These lists denote those records that crept into the lower (and sometimes higher) reaches of these charts not recognised by the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles from this period. Melody Maker’s chart when it reverted back to a Top 30 on 1st April 1967 did not register another `non-Guinness’ hit. In the early days, many charts often charted B-sides to a single separately. If these are not featured in Guinness, we have also included these. No EP’s from the Record Retailer era have been included as most of those that hit the charts were also included in their own EP chart which ran from 10th March 1960 until 2nd December 1967.

On a couple of occasions a record would be a major hit years after achieving a placing first time around in other charts. An example is Al Martino’s “Spanish Eyes” which got to 41 in Melody Makers chart on original release in 1966. Because the gap between this and its eventual Top 10 place in 1973 is so pronounced, its original minor placing is included – these are all highlighted throughout by an asterisk *. Numbers in brackets after the above information indicate position reached on Billboard Hot 100 chart, those preceded by ‘US’ denoting Top 40 American hit.

    MELODY MAKER

    Chart commenced on 7 April 1956 as a Top 20. It became a Top 30 on 14 April 1962 and then a Top 50 on 15 September 1962. Chart reverted back to a Top 30 on 1 April 1967.

    NON-GUINNESS HITS OF THE 1980’s & EARLY 1990’s: 1983 – 1994 FROM NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS CHRONOLOGY

Continuing on with our look at tracks which made other charts, but not Guinness Hit Singles, we now list the remainder of the 1980’s and into the 1990’s, when for the first time since 1956, NME decided to expand their charts from a Top 30 to a Top 50 in April 1983. This was probably due to the fact that Record Retailer, as used by Guinness expanded their chart in January 1983 from a Top 75 to a Top 100, although Guinness took the decision to exclude this data and continue as a Top 75 - as they have to this day. As several of these tracks below also made positions 76 to 100 in Record Retailer, we indicate these too, as they therefore never made Guinness Hit Singles. Information listed as date of chart entry, title, act, Billboard chart position and UK Independent chart hit (where applicable). The titles in bold only charted in New Musical Express.

Are there other tracks that never featured in Guinness Hit Singles from 1970 on?
I mean what other charts were available after 1969?

The only chart I am aware that continued into the 1970's was Melody Maker, but have been unable to locate these charts anywhere on the internet, so have therefore been unable to research them. Disc ran from 1958 to 1967, Record Mirror ran from 1955 to 1962, Record Retailer was used by Guinness which began in 1960, New Musical Express complete charts I have used the chart publications from the mid-1990's! If anybody however has the Melody Maker charts from 1970 onwards, please publish them on this site and I may get round to researching any more non-Guinness hit singles from them. I have only aware of number one singles and album lists from Melody Maker.

          Thanks for this list!

Interesting to see the list of NME only hits in the 80s when the NME Singles chart extended from a top 30 to a top 50. The entries here show that NME probably included a number of small independent retailers on their chart panel.

It's a shame that NME didn't extend the size of their chart in 1978 when the official chart extended to a top 75. There were a number of punk and new wave (and indie in general) singles in the period 1978 to 1982 that sold well but never made the official chart because they were mainly selling in these small independent retailers. While a number of them wouldn't provide sales returns at all, some did provide sales information to NME and Record Business (a Music Week rival at the time) while refusing to do the same for the BMRB chart.

I believe that some of the people who posted the NME charts on this site say they have got the 70's charts. However they have never got around to putting them up. Perhaps they are not allowed to do so? However I did read that the NME were going to put the magzines on-line to read, like Google have done with the Billboard. When I couldn't say :-?

Do you mean posting the 70s and 80s NME charts or the 70s and 80s Melody Maker charts?

The former (NME) have been published in two books in the 90s that can be bought from amazon but not the Melody Maker charts. As far as I am aware the latter are very hard to find though I do know of one (now seemingly ex) ukmix poster who does have them.

                Great list!

                06.11.1993 – 10 – 3 – Pearl Jam – Go (EP)

This was barred from the official chart as it had a free live cassette with the vinyl.

Interesting to see not just independent singles scrape the NME list but a few major label acts like the Stones - whose One Hit (To The Body) stalled at #80 in the official chart - a rare flop for them. I'm guessing that sales from independent stores (or HMV/ Our Price etc) were in some cases more healthy than in the likes of Woolworths for some major label acts? Woolies used to be based around the current top 40 and wouldn't order in anything that wasn't selling or likely to sell enough to make the 40. I remember trying to purchase Living In A Box's A Different Air (which only made #57) for weeks around Christmas '89 but they weren't ordering it because it wasn't top 40 - yet top 40 hit Room In Your Heart was still on their shelves.

MELODY MAKER NON - GUINNESS HITS: February - December 1969

                  20 Dec 1969 Whole Lotta Love – Led Zeppelin (Atlantic 584 309) (US4)
Any idea how many copies would have needed to be sold for the above single to chart.

As far as I'm aware, this single was pressed up in anticipation of a UK release (after it's US success) by Atlantic/Polydor, but Led Zep manager demanded it be withdrawn and destroyed, as he pointed to the bands contract, which stated that they (Led Zep) had finally say on the matter (of UK single releases).

The story goes though, that some copies of the single did actually get distributed to some shops in Manchester and were sold to public...the general consensus, is that a few hundred to 300 'got out'. I did actually own a copy (which I paid £250 for 1992 and sold for £1000 around 2000) and have seen another maybe 10 in all my years of collecting records, so clearly not many 'got out'.

I am just wondering if there is anyway of determing how many would have got you the place on that chart, as it could help to determine how many actually are out there.

Whole Lotta Love charted at #43 in the larger, unpublished, Melody Maker chart. I think I'm right in saying that MM only published a Top 30 (but still compiled a Top 50) due to concerns about chart hyping. The single will have sold very few copies to chart at such a low position and it's also possible that the single may have just sold in a small handful of chart returns shops. It's also possible that it may have sold next to nothing and had been hyped into the chart! It would have been in Atlantic's interests to get the single into the charts to force Led Zep's hands in order to allow the release of the single to stand. Then again, by December 1969 there was an official industry chart and it would make more sense to try and hype that chart. Unfortunately, earlier in 1969 the Breakers chart had been phased out once BMRB began to compile the official chart so it's not possible to tell if it came close to making the official top 50.

Just read through this. Fascinating. I seem to recall that Merseybeat ran a chart too, and that once it became Music Echo it ran top 100 for a while, before merging with Disc. It would be interesting to see those charts if anyone has them.

Another chart that would be interesting would be the BBC chart. The one they used until Februrary 1969

That was simply the combined chart of other charts. So it would not list any records that had not previously been mentioned as charting on other charts. I suspect that if one chart showed a record and a number of others didn't then it would not have made the BBC survey.

I am currently reading Mark Lewisohn's VERY LONG history of The Beatles until 1962 and note the existence of yet another pre-BMRB UK chart, published in something called The World's Fair, which catered to funfairs. This was a chart based on jukebox plays and seems to have started appearing around 1957. Apparently at some point, it ran to a full 100 places.

It would be fascinatg to see what songs made that chart. I understand that copies exist at the British Library on microfilm, but before I go and wekane my eyes further trying to find out more - has anyone else already been on track of these early charts?

Some time ago I listed by pubilcation, all the tracks that were not listed in Guinness / Virgin British Hit Singles books, but now list them in alphabetical order by act below...

                              CHRONOLOGY OF ALL NON-GUINNESS HITS OF 50’s & 60’s

Taking all the New Musical Express and Record Retailer releases from the 1950’s and 1960’s that charted elsewhere but not in Guinness Hit Singles, the following lists alphabetically the act followed chronologically all those releases. In many cases titles made more than one chart source, this is indicated at the beginning of by two letters – DM for Disc & Music Echo, MM for Melody Maker, NM for New Musical Express (after February 1960 when Guinness ceased using this chart) and RM for Record Mirror (up to March 1962 when they merged with Record Retailer, which Guinness utilises from March 1960. This chart information goes up to February 1969 when Record Retailer became generally accepted as the ‘official’ chart. Several releases that are listed were credited on the chart as B-sides or double A-sides though only listed if they did not also appear in Guinness Hit Singles. Data lists in each case after the act, chart source indicator, date of chart entry, title, record label catalogue number, highest position reached on that chart and weeks on that chart.

                                POP WEEKLY CHARTS ANALYSIS

This chart began on 1 September 1962 and was a Top 30 until 6 November 1965. It then decreased to a Top 10 from 13 November 1965 for three weeks, increased to a Top 20 on 4 December 1965 and back to a Top 30 again from 11 December 1965 until its demise on the final chart of 12 February 1966. Interestingly though the charts from 20 November 1965 were unique in that they were based on ‘reader’s write-in’ preferences!

Thanks for the list of number ones on the Pop Weekly chart. I've heard of this chart via various posts made at ukmix by asm (Alan Smith) but it's the first time I've seen a list of number ones.

Thanks for these, Wranglerjeans. I would be interested in a full list of these chart entries, including those which are also listed in Guinness, if you have time. It would be nice to compare this chart with the better known ones (Record Retailer, Disc, Music Echo, NME, Melody Maker, Record Mirror) which are already in circulation.

And if anyone has tbe charts in Mersey Beat, before it became Music Echo, those would be interesting too.

                                    Thanls again

If you try this link, it does list some interesting chart data for Merseybeat / Music Echo from December 1964 to April 1966, before it became Disc & Music Echo.

                                      http://www.pdf-archive.com/2015/06/21/m ... t-runs.pdf

I actually from this excellent data have compiled the following:

                                      NON-GUINNESS HIT SINGLES FROM
                                      ‘MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO’ CHRONOLOGY

Courtesy of the chart expert, Alan Smith, we list the non-Guinness hits from another music paper which although popular at the time, was only published briefly. This chart from Merseybeat / Music Echo, which commenced on 3rd December 1964, began as a Top 100, although sometimes reduced to a Top 75 when sales were less - particularly around August / September 1965. For the weeks of 25th December 1965 and 1st January 1966, it was a Top 20 only. From 8th January 1966 to the paper’s closure on 16th April 1966, it became a Top 50. For accuracy purposes, we have only listed Top 50 entries here, which did not make Guinness Hit Singles.

I'm currently uploading the 1965 charts once a week (often on a Thursday) to my blog site.
You will see some of the above records making the chart, plus some different ones.
It features the accurate sales figures and a top 100 chart, including the final records from the Embassy Label, only sold at Woolworth's, who didn't supply any sales information to the mainstream charts till 1976.
I don't list the labels, but you can spot the Embassy records as they are cover versions of current songs.

I'm currently up to the end of January 1965.

Thanks. I known that he released records under the name Scott Engel but I thought that in 1966 he realeased records under the name Scott Walker.

He did. This is a reissue of a pre-Walker Brothers recording.
