  • Silver (and Gold) Disc awards 1959 to 1973.

Little is known about the early classification of UK Silver and Gold disc awards pre British Phonograph Industry.

I have made some research, though there was little data to be gleaned! Anhow, here is what I was able to unearth.

    SILVER DISC AWARDS 1959 – 1973.

In 1959 the year old (It commenced in February 1958) music paper Disc instigated a scheme to award specially made silver discs to those records that sold over 250.000 units in the United Kingdom. Editor Gerald Marks set about contacting as many record companies as possible to try to persuade them to join up to the idea by contacting Disc with sales data on successful records passing the quarter of a million sales mark.

It was also decided that in the extremely rare occasion when a record passed one million sales (1.000.000) that specially made gold discs would be presented! Up to 1959 only three records were known to have passed the magic million number; these were “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley, “Mary’s Boy Child” by Harry Belafonte and “Diana” by Paul Anka. Cliff Richard’s `Living Doll` by October 1959, would be the fourth and final million seller of the 1950s.

The Silver disc award was thought to be a pretty rare occasion as only long running number 1 records would possibly qualify.

Extended play discs (EPs) were also awarded silver discs when sales were high enough; especially in 1964-5. Just the Beatles and Rolling Stones qualified due to both group’s high popularity and heavy EP sales.

Only one Long Player (LP) publicly received a silver disc by the paper in its early years of awards. This was awarded on 17 February 1962 to Elvis Presley’s `GI Blues`. It is still not known why no more formal announcements of silver disc LP awards were not made by the paper apart from the one announced for the group Uriah Heep on 24th June 1972 for their “Take a Look at Yourself” LP. Silver disc awards to LPs `did` continue though. Proof of this is the Beatles receiving such an award for their `With The Beatles` by their producer George Martin on Thank Your Lucky Stars `Merseybeat` special in December 1963.

It is not known whether the awards were backdated as there is no records are kept by Disc to confirm this. It is unfortunate for Elvis Presley as he would have surely qualified for LP silver discs if back dating were allowed.

The system relied on the willingness of Record companies forwarding the correct sales figures for the awards to be made. This system as it turned out, would lead to quite a few errors in the scheme. Sometimes Record Companies would be late with their data; R.C.A records often left it more than three months after Elvis Presley records had qualified, before informing Disc.

Only a few Record companies joined in the system in 1959 so data is sketchy especially as notification would be made after the record had dropped from the charts. Some awards were erroneous due to companies providing figures shipped to shops rather that over the counter sales.

The best example is the Archies “Sugar Sugar”. In January 1970 both Disc and Music Echo and Record Retailer published the news along with a photo of Archies producer Don Kirshner being awarded a gold disc by Disc editor David Hughes. It later transpired that “Sugar Sugar” had only sold just over 981.000 copies; the million figure as given was due to RCA records sending just over 1.000.000 units to retailers which not quite all were sold.

This is a problem that has bedevilled the RAAA awards in the United States of America. In theory in the states a record can win Gold or Platinum status solely on units shipped to retailers. If all were returned unsold the award would still stand.

The system was very much on trust and the diligence of Record companies tallying sales figures correctly. Sadly many did not even bother to submit sales data and many hit record which fans were certain should have qualified never got the award.

With gold record awards Disc did not seem to make clear when Gold records were awarded. The silver awards were duly publicised, but when a record went gold as well as silver it was not so well documented. For accuracy sake just the dates of silver awards are given. However, where it is known a record did sell over one million copies a capital G (Bold) mark will be assigned against the title.

There is no certainty of full accuracy as Disc sometimes gave erroneous information. In September 1970 both sides of Stevie Wonders “I Don’t Know why / My Cherie Amour” were awarded separate silver discs. “I Don’t Know why” fared poorly on release, and only when `B` side “My Cherie Amour” was promoted, did the record sell well. It is one of the obvious errors made by the paper.

By 1973 the British Phonographic Industry decided to set up an `official` awards. The BPI insisted on Record Companies giving rather more accurate data for this new scheme and that sales were properly audited. It was decided to mark sales of 500.000 with some type of award too. The BPI would now give a silver disc for 250.000 sales (no change there!) and to award gold for 500.000 sales. The one million sales would now be awarded the new platinum disc award. The first recipient of a Platinum disc was Gary Glitter for his million plus seller “I Love, You Love, Me Love” in late November 1973.

Disc and Music Echo did try to carry on their own awards through 1973, but it was made redundant by the new BPI awards which virtually every record company signed up to. Discs award scheme had never been universally accepted and sadly was error strewn, but it was a superb innovation for its time until a better and more accurate system evolved.

Here are the awards for 1959.

Cheers! Hopefully, on Monday I will get the 1961 awards on. It takes me time to adjust my `Word` docu original into a postable format on this site. So far it's looking reasonable if not perfect!

Thanks for this list of records awarded Silver and Gold discs and the explanation of how the scheme was introduced and how it worked.

Are you saying that DISC awarded a Gold Disc to Apache in 1960? According to Murrells it was awarded a Gold Disc for British sales in 1963. Strange that it never appears in any Top Sellers list (along with Wonderful Land, which is supposed to be their top UK seller).

Demitri Coryton gave a list of Silver Discs in his Hits of the 60s book. You have 2 extra ones in your list.
            “Bad Boy” (Marty Wilde) and
            “Only The Lonely” (Roy Orbison)

Coryton says Orbison won a Silver Disc for sales of 200,000 copies!

He also includes the following notes in his list.

            KEY
The final column on the right shows the total number of Silver Discs awarded to the artist up to, and including, the above award.
            * Immediate Silver Disc for advance orders of 250,000 or more by date of release.

1 Decca had decided not to claim Silver Discs for Elvis Presley records, claiming that Elvis did not need the publicity. After an outcry from Presley fans they changed their mind and at the end of December 1961 five Elvis records were submitted for awards and received them at the same time. Most would have qualified for a Silver Disc on the day of release for advance orders of over a quarter of a million copies.
2 G. I. Blues was the first album in Britain to sell over 250,000 copies.
3 Cliff Richard and the Shadows’ I’m Looking Out the Window/Do You Wanna Dance was the 100th Silver Disc awarded. Cliff and the Shadows had also won the 50th Silver Disc, for I Love You/D In Love in 1960.
4 Twist And Shout was the first EP in Britain to sell over 250,000 copies.

Looking forward to discovering extra awards.

              From NME 22/11/1963.

These symbols started to appear in Record Mirror on 28/3/1981. Who verified the sales? Why were they needed if BPI was the awarding body since 1973? Why were album sales linked to monetary values and not units?

I think Record Mirror were printing the official BPI awards. Albums were of course certified on the units basis still used today by 1981.

Maybe Record Mirror were still thinking of the earlier value-based qualifying that applied to the end of 1978. The platinum value shown applied throughout 1973-1978, but the silver and gold amounts shown were not correct at any point. Maybe they confused 100,000 units for gold with £100,000, although silver would still be wrong even on that basis.

I have a copy of Joseph Murrells Book of Golden Disc (Records That Sold a Million) dated 1978.
On Page 128 he states that by 1963 The Shadows Apache had sold a million copies in Britain.
He also says the Alisons Are You Sure? was a million seller.
However because his book covers all countries, it's not clear in some cases if he has lumped sales together. But in the above it seems not.
Yet in Cliff Richard's Living Doll, stated as selling a million, it also sold in the USA. So that might have been a combined figure.

However my family bought all of them. And they were not big single buyers at that time. So it wouldn't surprise me if ALL were over the million mark
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

Brian! As I stated in my intoductory notes to this thread - I am using the data given and reported in DISC music paper! The 1960 date for the Shadows was for the `Silver` award! DISC did seem to have a patchy way of reporting the figures and hardly ever mentioned it when UK Million sellers ocurred!

The Joseph Murrells book was error strewn- eg seriously under reporting Cliff Richard sales!

But!! UK sales stats are notoriously imprecise as the industry & trade went more by production figures back then unlike post 1973 with actual sales across the counter!

Remember that Top 100 list of all time UK sellers done a few years ago? `Apache` was never mentioned even though the lower part of the list featured lower than million sellers! And where was "My Way"? That was a clear million seller- and awarded Gold Disc in 1970.

                      Anyhow! Here's 1961 & 1962

Why no more were officially notified is not known. The paper certainly did award silver (and one gold) discs to the Beatles for their LPs but no actual dates of notification were published by Disc.

Two more points of interest raised! "Are You Sure?" Alissons. It was a European million seller - not a UK one!

Joseph Murrels 1978 book states in 1966 the Easybeats "Friday on my Mind" won a UK Silver Disc! Well, I have all the Discs for late 66 and all of 1967 - I can assure all that the record was `never` reported as such in DISC. Obviously another Murrels error!

A few years back I asked Dimitri about many sales figures and he confirmed the record companies were `VERY` secretive about these in the 1960s. EMI didn't like it mentioned that Ken Dodd's `Tears` had overtaken the Beatles "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in UK sales by Summer 1966. Ken Dodd gave an interview to DISC in Aug 1966 and he had gotton hold of the sales figures for "Tears" which Columbia divulged had cleared 1.600.000 (Aug 1966)
Of course by 1968 both Beatles records re-took the lead!

                        And now! 1963 & 1964

Just to reitterate! The dates given are when DISC repoted that a record had won SILVER disc status!

I would also query Dimitri's claim that G.I blues was the first UK 250.000 sales. My view is that surely `South Pacific` which had been on sale since 1957 was well past that figure! In 1963 `South Pacific` was the first LP in the UK to achieve one million sales!

Here's a poser for ye all! Apart from the Beatles and the Shadows (in 1963) who were the only other group to achieve a UK million seller in the 1960s? A clue is the record from said group was released in 1965!

First of all, many thanks for your posts, Alan!
Though i've got the list of 1959-69 Silver/Gold records, i have nothing after 1969. So i'm looking forward to your updates of this thread.
Besides, i love your trivia information very much!
                                  Please keep it going!

I'm sure my lists can't be %100 accurate- but the source (Disc music paper) obviously made errors¬ Unfortunate-but it does throw up the veracity of such lists!

Dimitri's superb book had errors too! I asked him why he had put the Bee Gee's "Gotta Get a Message to You" as a Melody Maker No 1 in Sept 1968 - as part of his UK No 1's in the charts section at the back of his book! He was gracious enough to admit that error! We all make `em! Cheers!

                                      And now!! 1969 & 1970 awards!

Thanks for continuing to do this Alan. It's good to see that singles were still able to sell 250,000 copies in the late 60s and early 70s even when overall single sales were down to their lowest level in a decade.

You say the award (or rather they said) the Silver Award is for 250,000 units sold.

                                              Is this
250,000 units sold over the counter or
250,000 units shipped by record company or
£250,000 worth sold over the counter or
£250,000 worth shipped by record company

I know nothing of the validity of this, but I have this image of a Silver Disc Award from Polydor for "Sales" of over 250,000 of Led Zeppelin (I), which has to be prior to March 1972, as Polydor stopped distributing Atlantic in the UK and it switched to different labels (Green/Orange) and a different catalogue number. Which would intimate to me over £250k shipped by record company, as I do not think there is any way possible, that Led Zeppelin I had sold (over the counter) or shipped to retail, over 250k units by March 1972

Up to 1967 DISC used to go by Advance sales and what the Record Companies divulged! I surmise that the awards were for production figures - example bieng the `Archies` "Sugar Sugar"

And now an apology to Brian05 and everyone else! I checked Brians two records "Almost There" and "Michelle" Though not mentioned they `were` awarded silver status by the little black dot put by the title in the Disc chart!

So Brian was quite correct and I should have re-checked using the `dot` method! My error! Anyhow! I will now put up the upgraded 1965 & 1966 DISC awards - thanks Brian!
