    1967

The charts as published in New Spotlight magazine for the years 1967 to 1969. It only started publishing weekly in May 1967 so for the weeks before that some of the top tens were published in Billboard courtesy of New Spotlight so I can begin with those.

The charts were also a Top 30 which differs to what is recorded on www.irishcharts.ie and The Larry Gogan Book of Irish Chart Hits (which the website is based on). They only use Top 15/20 for this period. New Spotlight reverted to a Top 20 in 1968.

So to begin, the charts in Billboard for the start of January are not from New Spotlight and don't seem to correspond to the official listings from Larry's book. The first one that does corresponds to date 16th January from Larry's book or week ending 25th January if I follow New Spotlight's method of cover dates. As I'll be using New Spotlight's dates later on I'll begin with their equivalent date.

Where I've listed records that should be in the chart for a particular week it's only based on the Top 20 data from Larry's book.

The published weeks on chart are in brackets after the song title. Some of these do not correspond to Larry's book and are an indication of whether a record charted in the bottom 10 in earlier weeks
          -------------------------------------------------
Larry Gogan uses different charts in his book for 2 weeks that correspond to the weeks 3rd May 1967 and 10th May 1967 in New Spotlight

After this week Larry's chart show seems to revert to using the chart supplied by New Spotlight and Top Ten combined with that magazine. The charts in Top Ten were first published for w/e 11th February 1967 and were noted as the "official charts of the Irish Record industry". They were compiled from over the counter sales from a sample of 50 record shops. It's only for these 2 weeks that Larry uses them though. Eddie Kelly's Top Ten hits book uses the New Spotlight charts throughout this period. I'll post the charts that I have from Top Ten at the end of this thread.

I guess once again there were problems with the compilation of the charts/ chart hyping. As Spotlight says:-

This week we publish the first chart compiled specially for us by a prominent Irish market research company. Great care is being taken to ensure that this chart is the most accurate list of best seling records ever compiled in this country and we strongly urge all record dealers and wholesalers to give their utmost co-operation and attention to our representatives' requirements, particularly during the difficult trial weeks.

This would not be the last time the Irish Chart found itself in difficulty! The unnamed chart compilers turned out to be the Market Research Bureau of Ireland Ltd (MRBI)

The Love Affair's hit (and all of their other hits) is missing from Larry's book and www.irishcharts.ie

                              From Spotlight:-

To facilitate record retailers, the measurement period of this chart is now from Thursday to Wednesday, instead of from Friday to Friday. Consequently, this week there was some duplication, and some records may not have moved as high as they were expected to.

This didn't affect the cover dates of the magazine or the dates that Larry Gogan used

I was hoping to check through the whole of 1967 today.....but, as December looked significantly more troublesome, I've paused at the end of November.

Most of my observations relate to February, and are based on the following extracts from the Larry Gogan book:

                                  23-Jan-67 PAMELA PAMELA Fontana 20 3
                                  28-Nov-66 SEMI-DETACHED SUBURBAN MR. JAMES Fontana 5 9
02-Jan-67 ANYWAY THAT YOU WANT ME Page One 11 5
16-Jan-67 FRIDAY ON MY MIND United Artists 13 4
                                  02-Jan-67 SAVE ME Fontana 14 5
02-Jan-67 YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON Tamla Motown 16 5
                                  02-Jan-67 IN THE COUNTRY Columbia 10 7
                                  19-Dec-66 MORNINGTOWN RIDE Columbia 2 7

Assuming that these were all transcribed correctly, I feel that they suggest some additional contenders for missing positions in the following weeks:

                                  February 1st, 1967 (Larry 23rd January)

PAMELA PAMELA - WAYNE FONTANA (at 20 for the first of three weeks)
SEMI-DETACHED SUBURBAN MR. JAMES - MANFRED MANN for a ninth week

                                  February 8th, 1967 (Larry 30th January)

PAMELA PAMELA - WAYNE FONTANA (at 20 for the second of three weeks)
ANYWAY THAT YOU WANT ME - TROGGS for a fifth week
FRIDAY ON MY MIND - EASYBEATS for a third week
SAVE ME - DAVE DEE DOZY BEAKY MICK AND TICH for a fifth week
YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON - SUPREMES for a fifth week

                                  ( although that makes a total of 22..... )

                                  February 15th, 1967 (Larry 6th February)

PAMELA PAMELA - WAYNE FONTANA (at 20 for the last of three weeks)
FRIDAY ON MY MIND - EASYBEATS for a fourth week

                                  ( and that makes a total of 24 ! )

                                  February 22nd, 1967 (Larry 13th February)

IN THE COUNTRY - CLIFF RICHARD AND THE SHADOWS for a seventh week ( although it's already peaked at 3, as per Eddie's book - rather than 10, as per Larry ) may be more likely than MORNINGTOWN RIDE - SEEKERS, which has already overtaken the seven weeks in Larry's book?

Otherwise, the only two minor points I have to add for these eleven months are:

                                  April 26th, 1967

PETULA CLARK seems to have been given one of HARRY SECOMBE'S big collection of number 20 positions this week?

                                  July 13th, 1967

The number 25 this week is a re-entry from three weeks earlier.

It's all excellent work, very much appreciated! As with the other threads, it's revealing many more errors in Larry's book - peaks, weeks, even entry dates - while tending to confirm more and more the accuracy of the chart data in Eddie's.....

Another missing hit for the Love Affair

6 of the next 9 weeks are incomplete. A lot of the data in the books for these weeks is also incorrect (I believe) which makes identifying missing records difficult.
