The charts as published in New Spotlight magazine for the years 1967 to 1969. It only started publishing weekly in May 1967 so for the weeks before that some of the top tens were published in Billboard courtesy of New Spotlight so I can begin with those.

The charts were also a Top 30 which differs to what is recorded on www.irishcharts.ie and The Larry Gogan Book of Irish Chart Hits (which the website is based on). They only use Top 15/20 for this period. New Spotlight reverted to a Top 20 in 1968.

So to begin, the charts in Billboard for the start of January are not from New Spotlight and don't seem to correspond to the official listings from Larry's book. The first one that does corresponds to date 16th January from Larry's book or week ending 25th January if I follow New Spotlight's method of cover dates. As I'll be using New Spotlight's dates later on I'll begin with their equivalent date.

Where I've listed records that should be in the chart for a particular week it's only based on the Top 20 data from Larry's book.

*This issue was either dated the 10th or 17th of February. In either case they have advanced the cover date by a whole week. It's missing from the archives.
I've only identified 19 of the hits for this week

A most interesting claim almost right at the end of the first part of this five-part documentary about five decades of Irish charts today on RTE Radio One - a member of Emmet Spiceland (Ireland's first ever boyband?) recalled that their first single, "Mary From Dungloe", was going to be at number five this week, but it was excluded from the chart due to reported irregularities - and therefore, according to him, there were only nineteen records in the top twenty that week!

So that may well explain what happened here. ( He also went on to recall that the following week it entered at number two, then climbed to number one - exactly as per the charts posted here for the next fortnight. )

Added chart data for February 1967 to August 1968 taken from the charts published in the Evening Press and courtesy of New Spotlight magazine. New Spotlight assembled a Top 30 for some of this time but only the Top 20 was published in the Evening Press. Billboard published the Top 10 only.

As New Spotlight was only published monthly at this time, the chart are not published in the magazine itself. When it became a weekly issue later in the year it was a combination of three magazines,New Spotlight itself, Top 30 and Top Ten

Unfortunately the archives don't seem to have any copies of Top 30. There will be more in this thread about Top Ten during the month of May 1967 when I update that.

Occasionally some of the "new" entries were shown as being in the chart the previous week between 21 and 30 and I've noted these when they are listed. I've also listed records which may have charted in the bottom 10 based on weeks on chart listed for some records.

Some of the records marked as "NE" (New entries) may have charted in the bottom 10 in earlier weeks.

A separate Irish Artists Top 10 was printed from Issue date 3rd October 1969. I'm missing 3 charts from then until the end of the year. Instead of printing the charts with gaps I'll just list which records charted below. On average there were 5 extra records a week listed in the Irish Artists chart which were not in the main Top 20.

Hits in blue did not appear in the main Top 20 at all.

Hits with a * beside it's highest position may have reached a higher position in one of the missing chart weeks. Other hits may have had more weeks on the charts. The missing weeks are 10th and 17th October (from which I can identify 5 hits from the main Top 20) and 26th December 1969 (6 hits identified). Each of the identified hits has been credited with a week for each.

In one chart (7th November) Peter Law with Ruby was left off the chart where it should have been No. 4. I've credited him with that week.

11 09 THE LOVE AFFAIR - A DAY WITHOUT LOVE

This isn't shown as number nine in the previous week?
I can't remember why I assumed it was no. 9 the previous week. I'm sure I had a good reason. Now all I'm sure of is that it was either 9 or 10. I've changed it's LW to 00

I think BEACH BOYS - DO IT AGAIN could be a sixth contender for the three unknown positions this week, and JOSE FELICIANO - LIGHT MY FIRE a seventh! The latter spent three weeks in the chart according to Larry's book - but the first one, in the previous week, is the only one anywhere here.....
I've added Feliciano for 2 weeks but not the Beach Boys because I think Larry's info is just wrong. I have too many more likely suspects already

Lily The Pink has incorrect weeks in Larry's book so it's a wild guess as to whether it's in this chart

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD - SON OF A PREACHER MAN could be another contender here (and elsewhere) - it has had only three weeks of Larry's nine.....
Again I think Larry is completely wrong here. For Dusty to wrack up those weeks she'd have to have re-entries another 4 or 5 times and always in weeks where the chart is missing.

This would be a ninth week for a hit that Larry only has in for eight weeks - unless it dipped out of the top twenty in the incomplete week of October? The book has REAL MCCOY - MANY THE MEMORIES entering in this week instead - but its date may just be wrong, as it survived a week longer than expected in early 1970, making the weeks total correct ![b]
I dunno what to do with this. It is very likely that Jane and Serge did drop out that week. It's also probable that Larry's weeks are wrong

    Fixed all the re-entries.

    Many thanks for checking

The other one I found that seems to be in need of a final re-entry week to reach Larry's total wasn't "Mary...." but SWEENEY'S MEN - WAXIES DARGLE.

That would give 23 contenders for the top twenty of that week - although some of the surplus hits no doubt picked up a final week later in the month ( or in June, where there are at least a couple of places not filled! )
Yeah there's only 19 hits in the chart for 8th of June 1968. Also 19 in the chart on 22nd of June 1968 but only 19 were listed in the published chart. It could have been published elsewhere with the missing No. 20. So spreading those 23 hits for 4th of May out we still have 1 extra. Joint No. 20s again perhaps

I think EMMET SPICELAND - MARY FROM DUNGLOE and CILLA BLACK - STEP INSIDE LOVE are also contenders for picking up a final appearance here (Cilla hopefully at 15 !)
I've put Cilla in for that week which gives me 22 hits. But I've made a note about the possible re-entries. I already had Mary From Dungloe in this week and the next
Sorry! I pasted the wrong hit in there.

The other one I found that seems to be in need of a final re-entry week to reach Larry's total wasn't "Mary...." but SWEENEY'S MEN - WAXIES DARGLE.

That would give 23 contenders for the top twenty of that week - although some of the surplus hits no doubt picked up a final week later in the month ( or in June, where there are at least a couple of places not filled! )
