  • Irish Singles Charts 1973-1975

Once again we'll be using the dates on the cover of New Spotlight magazine, except for the odd cases where they've printed obvious incorrect dates, in which case it'll just be the previous week's date plus 7 days. At the start of 1973 these dates were 7 days after the dates used by Larry Gogan and Eddie Kelly. However as we go along we'll see that some more date info was provided for the published charts and I'll note these when we come to them. Some of the 1975 charts have already been posted in an earlier thread but I'll post them again here at the end to keep them all in context.

The previous thread covering the years 1970-1972 is here http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=92110

Compiled by Irish Marketing Surveys Ltd for New Spotlight and RTE Radio starting off with a chart that's repeated from the last week of December 1972 as no new chart was published

In this issue New Spotlight celebrated its 10th anniversary. As part of the celebrations they published a list of all the number one hits from 1963 to 1973, compiled by Larry Gogan and a five page article called "10 Years of the Irish Charts - The singers & their hits" which concentrated on the number one hits with a little (obvious) commentary. Not too interesting but I did learn a few things. I never knew for instance, that Sandie Jones second number one hit in 1972, "What Do I Do" was a cover of a dutch Eurovision entry

Does anyone have any knowledge of any Northern charts? I know that the commercial station Downtown used to have a Top 30 show on Sunday afternoons ahead of the Network chart show (it overlaped with the RTE chart show for a period!). I remember hearing it as early as 1982 when the home nations were in the chart with their World Cup singles and it stopped in May 1993 with the last number 1 being the re-issue of "Young At Heart" by the Bluebells.

The above charts pre-date Downtown as it only started broadcasting in 1976.

Before Spotlight started publishing weekly in 1967 its monthly editions had a Northern chart. So it begins at least in 1967 but I'd say earlier than that

                                1974

So far there are 11 incomplete charts for 1974 but most of the missing hits can be identified even if the exact positions can't.

The charts are again compiled by Irish Marketing Surveys Ltd for New Spotlight and RTE Radio and IRMA. The Top Ten is still broadcast on Thursdays at 7pm on Discs-A-Gogan

20 NE 1 ELVIS PRESLEY - I'VE GOT A THING ABOUT YOU BABY
Elvis is listed in Larry's book as charting on 4.4.75 but the end of year recap lists a song of this title charting for a week at No. 20 in 1974. It's also around this time that the record charted in the UK. The other hits from 1975 charted on 3.4.75 so it's safe to assume the Elvis date is an error and it belongs here. This also means that Elton John must have been No. 16
