        KANYE'S TIDAL WAVE (SECOND UPDATE)

As expected, Kanye West delivered his new G.O.O.D./Def Jam album exclusively to Tidal for streaming right after his Saturday Night Live performance.

Yeezy also put The Life of Pablo on sale exclusively from KanyeWest.com on what was to be its first week of release. But in a quintessentially Kanye move, West tweeted Sunday morning that he’d given the exclusive to Tidal for another week before making it available to other outlets, apparently including his own.

Given the firestorm of fan complaints and reported malfunctions in the hours following the "release," it's unclear at this point whether anyone at any point was actually able to buy the album.

Those who enter the site will encounter not a "buy" button but an interminable message/rap from one Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def. Truly Bizarre.

So was a Saturday tweet in which he claimed to be $53m in debt.

Will Kanye later deliver music to iTunes, Amazon and other e-tailers, or will he use Jay Z’s superstar-owned platform for sales as well? Will he limit Tidal’s streaming exclusive to a week or two? What about physical? Is the windowed streaming and sales exclusive on the Rihanna record the model here? So many questions...

        Comment

        • Kanye said he plans on making the album TIDAL only and not for sale as of now. It might not even show on HDDs chart unless they get TIDAL streaming numbers.

YOUR TOP 15: ADELE HITS #1... AGAIN

Following the Grammys, there's a lot of speculation as to how the numbers may play out at retail. Keep your eyes peeled for an update tomorrow, once we’ve seen a full day of sales. It's safe to say, though, with a performance on the big show under her belt and the power of Valentine's Day-driven purchasing, XL/Columbia's Adele will be #1.

Joey+Rory—a respected country duo (and spouses), who were just nominated for Best Duo/Group Country Vocal Performance—look like they'll have the highest-charting debut this week. The couple's well-documented personal struggles have elicited a strong response from their fans and community.

Kanye West's new album isn't in the charts because Tidal won't release streaming data
                        by Rob Price

Kanye West's latest album won't be appearing in the charts any time soon.

As The New York Times reports, streaming platform Tidal isn't giving out any data about how much it has been streamed — so Billboard can't include it.

"Billboard has been informed that Tidal is not currently reporting streams for tracks on Kanye’s album to Nielsen Music," Billboad's VP of charts and data development Silvio Pietroluongo said. "Therefore streams from Tidal for this title will not contribute to Billboard’s chart rankings at this time."

"The Life of Pablo" (TLOP), released earlier in February, is Kanye West's seventh studio album.

The launch has been at times disorientating. Kanye — AKA Yeezy — jumped between multiple names for the album before finally settling on TLOP, and posted frequently updated track listings on Twitter as he worked.

On February 12, he debuted the album at a show at Madison Square Garden alongside his latest fashion line — but continued to change the track listing until its public launch two days later.

It did not go smoothly: Initially available to buy on his website, users encountered issues trying to buy it, and the download option has now been removed altogether. Yeezy now says the album will "never be for sale," forcing users to install Tidal, the Jay Z-owned streaming platform he has a stake in, to listen.

Throughout this all, Kanye has been tweeting a surreal stream-of-consciousness from this Twitter account — alternately picking fights with ex-girlfriends and asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for a billion dollars.

But even without Tidal's streaming data, we know TLOP is pretty popular. More than half a million people have pirated it.

This is what you get when you try to keep an album behind a locked door. Even more people will get it unofficially. Shame on Kanye

                                • TIDAL Doubled Its Subscriptions After Kanye West's "The Life Of Pablo" Release
                                  February 23, 2016 | 4:15 PM

TIDAL doubled its subscriptions thanks to the release of Kanye West's The Life of Pablo album.

TMZ reports that the streaming service shot up from 1 million subscribers to 2.5 million in 10 days after the project was released.

The Life of Pablo was streamed millions of times, which set a record for most streams on TIDAL. Rihanna released her ANTI album and Lil Wayne released Free Weezy to the service.

TIDAL is expecting to rake in $15 million in revenue from the new subscribers. The company offers a free 30-day trial before the payment plan is invoked. There are two versions of TIDAL, a $9.99 per month premium package and a $19.99 HiFi version.

The source also told TMZ that West is considering a physical release of The Life of Pablo. He previously stated that the album will not be available for purchase and can only be heard on TIDAL. A source told the New York Times that the rapper is preparing a deluxe physical edition of the album.

                                  • Assuming that almost 100% of the new subscribers Tidal had last week subscribed to the service because of the release of TLOP, and been given the fact that Tidal gives around 70% of the revenue directly to the artist, Kanye West is cashing in around $10 million.

Artists have to sell around 10 million physical copies in order to make that amount of money, which is almost impossible to achieve.

So, who's gonna be laughing now?

                                      • Oh, the TIDAL folks can fool themselves with those fabricated press releases when their artists release albums. They can't even release the physical albums on time anymore.

Not for albums. Many of them make upwards of $2.50 with albums, and more with songwriting and production credits. This is still better, if it happens, than $700k for Spotify.
I was waiting for Bey to drop so she could show that T&A arent the only ones smashing album SALES!!!

He said mere weeks after it had happened and without any discernible adverse long-term effects for Rihanna's reputation - or even without any way of knowing since it's been just a month.

Another good week for Adele! I hope she manages to score a few more weeks on the top... obviously matching 21's run is nigh impossible at this point (it's over 8 million already o.O), but I wouldn't mind for her to beat the other competition at least.

                                                  THREE-WAY IN THE OFFING?

A battle could be brewing for #1 next week. It involves three titles, one from each of the three major distributors.

Sony’s Adele (XL/Columbia), UMG’s The 1975 (Interscope) and WEA/ADA’s Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) all seem poised to challenge for the top. Adele, coming off four BRIT Award wins, is expected to land somewhere in the 80-90k range. The 1975, who already have preorders and fan site sales in the neighborhood of 40k, could also tally around 80-90k.

The wild card, surprisingly, is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. After selling 1.5m copies of their previous album, The Heist, and nearly 8m copies of its lead single, “Thrift Shop,” the duo finds itself facing an uphill battle with the follow-up. Because the album has been given just a one-week preorder and there’s no hit single, forecasters are reluctant to suggest first-week sales of more than 75k. Of course, even a slight over-performance will put it in the running for #1.

Check back on Saturday morning, when we’ll take our first look at this week’s new releases.

NEW RELEASES: THE 1975 DON'T sleep

The 1975 will win the battle to rule next Friday’s sales chart, with Adele likely #2. Things may be closer on the SPS chart, but Adele will have to stay relatively flat in order to challenge.

The U.K. band’s laboriously titled, saucily un-capitalized I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it sits at #1 on the iTunes album chart, followed by fellow debut This Unruly Mess I’ve Made by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Kelly Clarkson holds the #3 spot, with Adele currently at #4. Stay tuned for updates; in the meantime, here’s how the week’s top two debuts are shaping up:
