        • Fairly decent start for Gaga. I was expecting Joanne to open with less than half of what Artpop did. Nice to see her stem the exodus somewhat.

          • Surprised the Lazarus soundtrack is nowhere to be found. I figured the three final songs Bowie recorded would at least give the thing some sales.

            • Respectable numbers for Gaga. I hope the album does well between now and the Super Bowl so the halftime show effect can be greater.

Perfect Illusion spent 1 week in the Top 40.

Almost 200K for her is a miracle.

                • Gaga is still a pop star, she will need a hit and some hype to survive her eras, she's not really Barbra level (who can go Platinum with zero promotion) despite getting tons of acclaim for her performances lately.

                  • When purely looking at how big she was during The Fame/The Fame Monster (which, let's not forget, is already 7~9 years ago), these numbers are very underwhelming, but when you consider her downturn from era to era and the absolute and complete lack of a hit this time around, this is actually very good.

This maybe harsh to say but the general interest in David Bowie is very very low. His albums aren't selling much anything and he is getting little to no streams.

                                  • Could Avenged Sevenfold's surprise album be #1 next week? Or Kenny Chesney?

AVENGED SEVENFOLD LANDS ON CAPITOL TOWER; ALBUM COULD TOP CHART

The surprise release of The Stage, Avenged Sevenfold’s seventh album and first for Capitol, was celebrated in sci-fi style Thursday night. The band performed atop the Capitol Tower during what was described as “a groundbreaking 3D/360-degree livestreamed virtual-reality event.”

The Stage—the first-ever unannounced release with a physical component—is the follow-up to 2013’s, Hail to the King (WBR), which debuted at #1 on sales of around 160k. If the new album performs anywhere near as well, Avenged Sevenfold could outsell Kenny Chesney and land at the top of next week’s chart. The Stage is #4 on the iTunes chart as of early Friday; Chesney’s Cosmic Hallelujah (Blue Chair/Sony Music Nashville) is #2.

Co-produced by the band and Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool), the thematic album was inspired by the writings of Carl Sagan and Elon Musk.

                                      THREE Q4 BIGGIES SQUARE OFF

Rock giants Metallica will release their long-awaited new Blackened/Rhino set on 11/18—the same week as superstar Bruno Mars. The pair will square off on the SPS and Album charts, with the rock foursome’s label making a power move and first-week action looking to be in the vicinity of 250k. The manager-less Mars is looking way down from the label forecast of 400k, and appears set to debut in the range of 200-225k.

XO/Republic’s The Weeknd delivers his Starboy on Black Friday (11/25); look for that project to do 400k or so in its opening week.

                                      • Great results for Gaga. Seems like her image re-haul worked out good for her. Million Reasons has really clicked with people it seems. It actually climbed its way up as opposed to the strong debut peak and then fall. This actually might be a real hit for her if they play their cards right.

                                        • Not an Avenged Sevenfold fan but it's cool to see a rock act doing the surprise release thing since it seems like usually they have stuck to the more tried and true strategy since they don't rely as much on social media as pop and hip hop stars do, even Radiohead gave the audience about a week heads up before their album came out.

Agreed. Million Reasons is a much stronger single choice than Perfect Illusion, hopefully it'll be a legitimate hit

THREE-WAY ACTION ON NEXT WEEK'S CHART?

There’s action afoot among the new releases vying for the top of next week’s chart, with a possible three-way battle brewing among three very different releases. Kenny Chesney’s hotly anticipated new Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville set is up against surprise drops from Capitol’s Avenged Sevenfold and Meek Mill (WMG).

Avenged’s first set for the Tower is unique, the first-ever worldwide surprise drop in both physical and digital form, and pop-up stores are also in the works to sate the band’s rabid fanbase. Meek’s digital-only set should enjoy a big bump from streaming.

The prospect of a battle is based on very early reads, and our sales geniuses are frantically counting their fingers and toes. One thing’s for sure—this is gonna get hot, and you’ll want to be checking back here all weekend.

A CHART STORY, BROUGHT TO YOU BY JOANNE

Interscope’s Lady Gaga has topped the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 199k for her highly anticipated, fifth studio album, Joanne.

Reprise’s Michael Bublé followed at #2 with 95k for Nobody But Me, and RCA’s Pentatonix have rounded out the Top 3 with 60k for their latest holiday release, A Pentatonix Christmas. Their version of “Hallelujah” has held in the iTunes Top 10 all week and the video, which garnered 21m+ views via YouTube already, hit #1 at iTunes.

As for the remaining debuts, Korn’s The Serenity of Suffering bowed at #4 with 55k, Chris Tomlin’s Never Lose Sight (Six Steps) came in at #8 with 33k, “Hallelujah” writer Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker (Columbia) followed at #9 with 24k and I Prevail’s Lifelines (Fearless) appeared at #12 with 22k, while The Pretty Reckless’ Who You Selling For (Razor & Tie) appeared at #14 with 21k.

Sia’s This Is Acting (Monkey Puzzle/RCA) saw a nice bump, going #18-10, as the deluxe version—which houses seven new tracks, including “The Greatest” f/Kendrick Lamar—becomes available everywhere. Also, her Nostalgic For the Present Tour continues to power on, and her music was just added to the recently launched Amazon Music Unlimited.

Rae Sremmurd’s SremmLife 2 (Eardruma/Interscope) went #33-26, as single “Black Beatles” goes #8-4 on HITS’ Streaming Songs Chart.

After Kanye West publicly announced that he would boycott The Grammys if Frank Ocean’s Blonde (Boys Don’t Cry)—which missed the submission deadline for eligibility—wasn’t nominated, Blonde surged #37-27. And then there’s the Crush-repped Panic! At the Disco, who went #50-43, powered in part by a $7.99 iTunes sale.

BTW, we’d like to clear something up. Boys do cry… especially middle-aged ones who work at a certain trade magazine that is scheduled to produce four special-edition print magazines in eight weeks. And they cry in the fetal position. Oh, yeah, that reminds us: Be on the lookout for HITS’ upcoming spotlight on the biz’s top managers and new and developing artists. Weeeeeeee!

As for SPS marketshare battle, there’s UMG at #1 with 46%, WEA at #2 with 28% and Sony at #3 with 22%.

                                                        Meanwhile, on the Album Sales Chart, 11 of the Top 15 ended up being debuts. Those came from Gaga (#1, 168k), Bublé (#2, 89k), Korn (#3, 52k), Pentatonix (#4, 52k), Tomlin (#5, 31k), Cohen (#6, 23k), I Prevail (#8, 20k), Pretty Reckless (#9, 20k), WMG’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra (#10, 17k), RCA’s Jimmy Eat World (#12, 13k) and Amy Grant (#15, 10k).

This week’s album sales marketshare battle looks similar to the SPS one; there’s UMG at #1 with 42%, WEA at #2 with 31% and Sony at #3 with 24%.

Freshly out this week are albums from Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville’s Kenny Chesney, Capitol’s Avenged Sevenfold, WMG’s Meek Mill, RCA’s Pitbull, Island’s Tove Lo, Astralwerks/Capitol’s Empire of the Sun and Def Jam’s Jeezy, along with Christmas sets from Capitol’s Neil Diamond, Big Machine’s Jennifer Nettles, Mailboat’s Jimmy Buffett, Mercury Nashville’s Kacey Musgraves and Republic’s Jordan Smith.

                                                          NEW RELEASES: BATTLE DRUMS?

With some signs pointing to a three-way battle for #1 on our next SPS chart, let's take a look at the early reads on some key new titles.

Kenny Chesney (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) 77-83k SPS, 71-76k album
                                                          Avenged Sevenfold (Capitol) 73-78k, 72-77k
                                                          Jeezy (Def Jam) 60-70k, 55-60k

As we noted previously, Chesney's long-awaited new set is up against surprise drops not only from rockers Avenged Sevenfold (whose release is the first no-warning release of physical and digital product simultaneously) and the digital-only set from rapper Meek Mill, who's likely to rack up a passel of streams. Could we see these three duke it out for the SPS crown at week's end?
