          FUTURE'S #1 SEQUEL

Back-to-back #1 debuts don’t come along often, but Future is about to take his second album in two weeks, HNDRXX, to the top of our charts, following a #1 bow for the eponymous set he dropped last week. Little Big Town, powered by a ticket bundle, will have the week’s biggest country debut, while John Mayer rolls out his second Wave EP.

                      ED SHEERAN IS @ #1 WITH ÷

As expected, Ed Sheeran's hotly anticipated third full-length, ÷ (Asylum U.K.), debuted at #1 on iTunes upon its release.

The 16-track set doesn't feature the usual VIP guest list of sparkling collaborations. Still, Sheeran is no stranger to teaming up; current remixes of the #1 single "Shape Of You" feature Major Lazer and Stormzy, and Sheeran recently performed with the latter on the BRIT Awards.

But will Sheeran beat the first-week expectations? Projections sit north of 400k. Could he do 500k in his first week?

CHART STORY: FUTURE IS #1, AND ALSO #2

Future has dethroned Future. What we mean to say is the A1/Freebandz/Epic artist’s Hndrxx has gone #1 on the HITS Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart, earning approximately 117k, as his eponymous album (released a week prior) slides to #2. The latter tacks on an additional 62k this week.

Capitol Nashville’s Little Big Town, meanwhile, debuts at #4 with 52k for their seventh studio album, The Breaker. That said, it did turn out to be the #1 country album at SPS.

Two other debuts made the Top 15, as Aaron Watson’s Vaquero (Big Label) comes in at #11 with around 36k and John Mayer’s The Search For Everything: Wave Two (Columbia)—the second batch of songs from his seventh studio album, released as an EP—appears at #13 with 33k.

What about those post-Oscars bumps? RCA’s Trolls soundtrack—also affected by a $5.99 iTunes pricing—goes #9-5 with 51k, Disney’s Moana soundtrack jumps #15-8 with 39k, and the Interscope soundtrack for La La Land (you know, that movie that was Best Picture for about 180 seconds) leaps #19-9 with 16k.

When it comes to SPS marketshare, UMG leads with 45%. Then there’s SME at #2 with 34%, WMG at #3 with 18% and indies at #4 with 4%.

Over on the Album Sales Chart, the battle turned out to be much more of a nail-biter. Future edged out LBT in a squeaker, pulling in 44,019 (versus their 43,790). There, the Trolls soundtrack is #3 with 35k, Watson’s Vaquero is #4 and Mayer’s Search is #7. There’s also an additional debut in this Top 15—Prince Royce’s Five (Sony Music Latin), which earned north of 13k and can be found at #13.

Westbury Road/Roc Nation’s Rihanna, who was just named Harvard University’s Humanitarian of the Year, can also celebrate her ANTI surging #50-38. We’re jealous; the only thing we can imagine a place like Harvard awarding us with is a restraining order…

The results from the Album Sales marketshare battle look similar to the SPS rankings. There, UMG is #1 with 40%, SME is #2 with 38%, WMG is #3 with 16% and the indies follow at #4 with 7%.

Streeting this week are albums from WMG’s Ed Sheeran and RCA’s Khalid.

Ed Sheeran's 'Divide' Aiming for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With Year's Biggest Debut
                              3/3/2017 by Keith Caulfield

Ed Sheeran’s new ÷ (Divide) album is on track to earn 2017’s biggest debut, according to industry forecasters, and should easily give Sheeran his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart (dated March 25). Those in the know suggest the set, which was released Friday (March 3), could easily start with more than 300,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending March 9. It’s likely the title could clear a total somewhere in the range of 350,000 to 425,000 units.

Considering the album only came out today, these are initial forecasts that could change dramatically in the next few days, once the album has been in the marketplace for more than a few hours. (Translation: Stay tuned for further updates on Sheeran and his album.)

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Sheeran’s first week performance, and ÷’s debut rank on the Billboard 200, are not scheduled to be announced until March 12, after Nielsen Music has completed the processing of its tracking data for the week ending March 9. (Before that, we still have the anticipated No. 1 debut from Future’s HNDRXX on the chart dated March 18. That tally’s top 10 will be revealed on March 5.)

You may wonder how one can forecast the first-week performance of an album (like ÷) after it has been out for less than a day. Initial forecasts are based on a range of indicators, which include pre-order sales of the album, first-week performance of comparable albums, streaming activity of an album’s lead single (or singles), radio trends for the set’s songs, media exposure of the artist and so forth. In general, you can best guess an album’s debut-week sum once it has had a couple of days of availability.

The last album to start with more than 300,000 units in a week was J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only, which launched at No. 1 on the chart dated Dec. 31, 2016, with 492,000 units earned. Two weeks before that, The Weeknd’s Starboy scored a No. 1 bow with 348,000 units.

                                      • Billboard has always been very conservative with their forecasts.

HITS says 500k is possible. I think that will happen.

We will know more today. Better figures on Monday. The HITS Top 15 on Tuesday.

NEW RELEASES: DOING THE MATH ON DIVIDE

Look for Asylum's Ed Sheeran to bow with a stratospheric SPS total; some predict it could go still higher thanks to huge streaming numbers. Stay tuned.

                                          • I expected something like 450k pure sales so those 325k are a little bit underwhelming considering all the promo, he is now the supposed male-Adele and how big was SOY. (Metallica's last album sold 280k, and Starboy sold 210k)
But his record-breaking streams are HUGE and the longevity will be the key after all.

                                              KA-BOOM! HERE COMES DRAKE

A Drake album containing 20 newly recorded tracks could surprise-drop as soon as this weekend from YMCMB/Republic. According to U.K. sources, much of the LP was recorded with British and European collaborators during Drake’s January-February Boy Meets World Tour of Europe and the U.K., as he begins to make his brand more global.

During his six sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena, Drake strongly hinted that his annual OVO Fest, which has been held in Toronto every summer since 2010, may be staged in London this year. He also teased a possible Young Money reunion tour, which would presumably include Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj as well as Drizzy himself.

In other Drake action, OVO Sound, the label he founded in 2012 with partners Oliver El-Khatib and producer Noah “40” Shebib, has renewed its distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records. The OVO roster includes PARTYNEXTDOOR, dvsn, Majid Jordan, Céline Nakouzi, OB O’Brien and Roy Woods; the label also has a stable of in-house producers.

I think a lot of people on here are conflating his "regular" success in the US with his HUGE MEGA INSANE success in the UK. Considering what Bruno Mars and The Weeknd opened with in the US, I think these numbers are more than fine.

I don't get why people feel the need to make such comparisons, but if you had to, it would only sort of hold up in the UK. No male artist there can even come close to him, so in that sense he is above the competition, just like Adele is. This is not the case in the US. He is "just" very big there.

Indeed. But SOY (and his previous albums) were HUGE (Pop/Soul/R&B) in the US and SOY is bigger than any song released by TW and Bruno the last year. Of course they all are diferent genres and that's why we make the comparison with Adele.
"÷" is big ,don't get me wrong, but I expected a little more in pure sales (or at least reaching 500k with sps)

I think a lot of people on here are conflating his "regular" success in the US with his HUGE MEGA INSANE success in the UK. Considering what Bruno Mars and The Weeknd opened with in the US, I think these numbers are more than fine.

he is now the supposed male-Adele and how big was SOY
