    • Okay how does it make it a difference that it's a debut album, esp when they already had a debut EP?
Is it somehow bad to get over 300k in two weeks for an artist that first released in the US this year? It's a better 1st week than Artpop, and now a better 2nd week (and better % drop) than Artpop.

      • A "big" sales drop would be from 250k to 20k.

        • @fridayteenage: Debut albums tend to be less frontloaded than others. ARTPOP had one of the alltime biggest drops in chart history. Lady Gaga has set a (high) standard with her first two studio albums, 5 Seconds of Summer haven't established one yet.
@BadMan125: As if such a drop was that realistic ...

          • That seems way too arbitrary for me to care to look up stats on that.

Especially since it's not like it's that frequent this decade for a debut album to open with 250k+ in the first place.

              Isn't it obvious though?

They had BIG pre-orders due to the very early Itunes release. So to me, it is a pretty understandable drop. Nothing shocking about it.

And I don't like the generalizing (e.g. for a debut album) you're using TImmy... Count in the factors.

Or sure Timothy (that's also my name lol), let's not act as if 5 Seconds of Summer had months of pre-orders. Let's just pretend that these sales weren't frontloaded and their label just forgot to ship another 100,000 copies. Please do tell.

                • ^^^

You guys KNOW Timothy doesn't count real life factors. Only the things in his mind and the performance he suspects of other albums matters.

The rest of us UNDERSTAND the drop. And don't make such broad ascertations.
I was waiting for Bey to drop so she could show that T&A arent the only ones smashing album SALES!!!

GALAXY QUEST: What do you get when you combine Marvel’s record-breaking new superhero adventure with an eclectic batch of classic-rock and retro-pop gems? Another major soundtrack for Disney, it seems. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 is benefiting from the film’s monster box-office bow—but also from its foregrounding of songs like Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and the Five Stairsteps’ “O-O-H Child”—to hurtle toward the Top 5 in its first week, possibly debuting as high as 50k. The soundtrack hit #1 at iTunes in 22 global markets (including the U.S., of course) and Top 5 in 37. That’s pretty Groot. Er, great. (8/4a)

YOUR EARLY READS: Now 51 is the top debut this week and has an early edge in the race for next week’s #1 album. But we’re keeping a close eye on Disney's currently charting Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, which will bow in the Top 5 very shortly and which has already blown away initial expectations. If sales grow as they could this week, the film's retro-pop Awesome Mix may take the top spot from Sony’s first Now compilation (this time via Legacy) since Now 32debuted at #5 in November of 2009. Invariably, one or another anthology of established hits will rule, whether it's hits like "Rude"and "Stay With Me" or hits like "Spirit in the Sky" and "Fooled Around and Fell in Love."

                                  Now 51 (NOW) 85-95k
                                  Godsmack (Republic) 45-55k
                                  Spoon (Loma Vista/Concord) 35-40k
                                  The Vamps (Island) 18-21k

These early numbers are, of course, early, please make a note of it.

YOUR NEW RELEASES: As we suggested yesterday, it looks like a battle is brewing for next week's #1 album. Both Now 51 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 appear headed toward totals just south of 100k. For such an outcome to occur, though, Now 51 will need to trend similarly to its predecessors, while Guardians will need to pull in another stellar weekend. Here are this week's key debuts:

                                        Now 51 (NOW) 90-100k
                                        Godsmack (Republic) 45-50k
                                        Spoon (Loma Vista/Concord) 35-40k
                                        The Vamps (Island) 18-20k
                                        Andy Grammer (S-Curve) 9-11k

Btw, Jody Rosen’s four-star lead review of Spoon’s They Want My Soul just went up on RollingStone.com. (8/6a)

His second album took a long time to reach gold, he's not really big in the US.

                                                • COMP WARS: It definitely looks like another nail-biter going into the weekend, as projections for both Now 51 and the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 soundtrack remain tight. Both compilations should have a strong weekend. Now (featuring Katy, Ariana, Iggy, Sia, Sam, KONGOS and other chartbusting faves) releases always trend well, and Guardians (Jackson 5, 10cc, Raspberries, Rupert Holmes) will likely see another spike from the film's second weekend; for the time being, Disney’s Marvel-backed oldies mix gets a slight edge. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
