  • I'm not respectful towards others? Now you hurt my feelings because I always try my best to be nice and polite towards. If I have another opinion on others, I'll let them know about it, but if I do so, then I don't wanna put others down, sometimes it's just that I consider my opinions the best, but that doesn't mean that I'm always right, even I admit that I do mistakes by times and that others have been right or knew something I din't know.

When it comes to chart analysis, I always use the last two records (= albums when talking about albums, lead singles when talking about lead singles, etc.) as reference values and this method turned out to be reliable in most cases, only exceptions are e.g. Cher who had a decade long break between albums. Young Jeezy's last album was released less than 3 years ago, that's still within frame. Of course multiple aspects are considered when doing such comparisons, I'm always sceptic if opening sales drop more than 50% between two back-to-back albums.

    • Could anyone tell me by how much sales dropped 2012 to 2013, and 2013 to 2014? I'd be interested in comparing Overexposed's and V's sales market-wise, because I suspect the difference really isn't that big, and easily explained by Maps not being Payphone, so to say.

Like Wayne and danbarj, though, I worry for their longevity this time. We'll see!

      • I don't have any numbers, but I feel like the drop from 2012 to 2013 wasn't all that back, while the drop from 2013 to 2014 was even bigger. It basically started when the Billboard statics weren't published anymore. Right before that moment, it was a no-go for No. 10 albums to drop below 20k and for No. 50 albums to drop below 8k... And we've dropped A LOT below these benchmarks.

i can only show you with artists i like becaus ei have their numbers

for example Dido debuted at #32 last year in March with 18.000, while Lily Allen debuted at #12 this May with 17.000, and now you can even enter top 10 in most weeks with 15.000-18.000

          • Thanks guys, but I think I should have clarified: I meant the figures given weekly below the Billboard report, but then for the entire year (i.e. year-on-year album sales are down xx per cent). I should be able to find them, just wondered if perhaps someone knew them by heart or something : P.

So basically our fall this year is similar to 2010... I feel album sales will be on an up and down swing for the next several years. If Billboard's right, album sales should start to stabilize by 2018-19. But who knows?

Ever since Kesha released her last album, we know that the month you release your album doesn't play a role when it comes to the opening of your album. At least nowadays and in the US!
Ke$ha's career going tits up after her debut explains that.

Rapper of faith Lecrae is getting a nice retail boost from Christian bookstores, while Aiko is enjoying the momentum off her successful EP. Lecrae is now #2 on iTunes, while Aiko is at #3. (9/9p)

YOUR EARLY READS: Souled Out by ARTium/Def Jam's Jhené Aiko and Anomaly from Reach's Lecrae will battle for #1 on next week's Album Sales Chart, according to the early tea leaves. Rapper of faith Lecrae is getting a nice retail boost from Christian bookstores, while Aiko is enjoying the momentum off her successful EP. Lecrae is now #2 on iTunes, while Aiko is at #3. (9/9p)
They really hyped Jhené a lot, so the No. 1 opening isn't that unexpected, even though new acts tend to go for a lower opening and therefore have greater longevity... Christian music isn't that big in the US, so I'm not feeling that comfortable about the fact that Lecrae is predicted to battle for No. 1. The last two Christian musicians that made it to No. 1 are Chris Tomlin and TobyMac (he's quite underrated if you ask me) and they only did so with ~ 70k each...

                                  • Anyone care to take a guess at Jhene's and Lecrae's numbers? She has sold 282,000+ copies of her EP, which has done tremendously well, while Lecrae is a consistent seller and has been constantly upping his results album to album. 110-125k for both? Not sure how to place them, I know Jhene will be 100k+ but will Lecrae really do that good? No clue, curious to hear what everyone else thinks!

And people say that you need hit singles in order to sell records . Now seriously, if an album fails on the charts, it's definitely NOT due to lack of a hit single but other factors...

                                                • Two things need to be said about Meghan:

                                                  1. it's only an EP
                                                  2. it's only digitally available, no physical release

I'm sure she'd sell at least 30-40k first week with a full album

Remember Carly Rae Jepsen? She had also a huge pop hit with "Call Me Maybe" and i'd say "All About That Bass" is kinda similar... and despite having such a huge hit, her full album "Kiss" only sold 46k in its first week

10k is not that bad? It's not like EPs haven't reached the top 10 before... The biggest EP is probably Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, which ended up reaching platinum...

10k is not that bad? It's not like EPs haven't reached the top 10 before... The biggest EP is probably Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, which ended up reaching platinum...
Well, she released it after the Fame, which was quite huge. You can't really compare those two. Plus as Tansike stated above, it's a digital only EP. So, I guess that's not to bad to sell 10 k with a digital only EP..

I believe the biggest selling EP (SoundScan era) is Alice In Chains' "Jar Of Flies" which is certified 3 x platinum. Also, Justin Bieber's "My World EP" has sold over 2 million.
