  • TIDAL Doubled Its Subscriptions After Kanye West's "The Life Of Pablo" Release
    February 23, 2016 | 4:15 PM
    by Victoria Hernandez

TIDAL doubled its subscriptions thanks to the release of Kanye West's The Life of Pablo album.

TMZ reports that the streaming service shot up from 1 million subscribers to 2.5 million in 10 days after the project was released.

The Life of Pablo was streamed millions of times, which set a record for most streams on TIDAL. Rihanna released her ANTI album and Lil Wayne released Free Weezy to the service.

TIDAL is expecting to rake in $15 million in revenue from the new subscribers. The company offers a free 30-day trial before the payment plan is invoked. There are two versions of TIDAL, a $9.99 per month premium package and a $19.99 HiFi version.

The source also told TMZ that West is considering a physical release of The Life of Pablo. He previously stated that the album will not be available for purchase and can only be heard on TIDAL. A source told the New York Times that the rapper is preparing a deluxe physical edition of the album.
"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is easily the best mainstream hip-hop album since 2001's The Blueprint by Jay-Z."

    • Assuming that almost 100% of the new subscribers Tidal had last week subscribed to the service because of the release of TLOP, and been given the fact that Tidal gives around 70% of the revenue directly to the artist, Kanye West is cashing in around $10 million.

Artists have to sell around 10 million physical copies in order to make that amount of money, which is almost impossible to achieve.

So, who's gonna be laughing now?

      • I suppose most of the new subscriptions are trial ones...

        • Oh, the TIDAL folks can fool themselves with those fabricated press releases when their artists release albums. They can't even release the physical albums on time anymore.

          • So tidal now has 4 subscribers?

Not for albums. Many of them make upwards of $2.50 with albums, and more with songwriting and production credits. This is still better, if it happens, than $700k for Spotify.
I was waiting for Bey to drop so she could show that T&A arent the only ones smashing album SALES!!!

He said mere weeks after it had happened and without any discernible adverse long-term effects for Rihanna's reputation - or even without any way of knowing since it's been just a month.

Another good week for Adele! I hope she manages to score a few more weeks on the top... obviously matching 21's run is nigh impossible at this point (it's over 8 million already o.O), but I wouldn't mind for her to beat the other competition at least.

                    THREE-WAY IN THE OFFING?

A battle could be brewing for #1 next week. It involves three titles, one from each of the three major distributors.

Sony’s Adele (XL/Columbia), UMG’s The 1975 (Interscope) and WEA/ADA’s Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) all seem poised to challenge for the top. Adele, coming off four BRIT Award wins, is expected to land somewhere in the 80-90k range. The 1975, who already have preorders and fan site sales in the neighborhood of 40k, could also tally around 80-90k.

The wild card, surprisingly, is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. After selling 1.5m copies of their previous album, The Heist, and nearly 8m copies of its lead single, “Thrift Shop,” the duo finds itself facing an uphill battle with the follow-up. Because the album has been given just a one-week preorder and there’s no hit single, forecasters are reluctant to suggest first-week sales of more than 75k. Of course, even a slight over-performance will put it in the running for #1.

Check back on Saturday morning, when we’ll take our first look at this week’s new releases.

NEW RELEASES: THE 1975 DON'T sleep

The 1975 will win the battle to rule next Friday’s sales chart, with Adele likely #2. Things may be closer on the SPS chart, but Adele will have to stay relatively flat in order to challenge.

The U.K. band’s laboriously titled, saucily un-capitalized I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it sits at #1 on the iTunes album chart, followed by fellow debut This Unruly Mess I’ve Made by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Kelly Clarkson holds the #3 spot, with Adele currently at #4. Stay tuned for updates; in the meantime, here’s how the week’s top two debuts are shaping up:

                            The 1975 (Dirty Hit/Interscope) 90-100k album, 95-105k SPS
                            Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) 45-55k, 50-60k

                              • Anthrax will probably do anywhere between 20-30k which will be good enough for the top 20. Maybe top 10 if they're really lucky.

                                • I expect a little bit more for Macklemore...The Heist was really BIG, i mean at least 100k for a opening debut week, i hope the numbers get better on the next reports.

                                  • Macklemore's fire burned fast, his arrogance also doesn't help. Not to mention, "Downtown" was not even close to being a "Thrift Shop" or "Can't Hold Us".

                                    • Wow. Did not expect even before SPS added in for Animal Collective to bomb that badly. "Floridada" is doing well on alternative radio and bands like that seem to have a stable fanbase even if there's almost no crossover appeal but I figured they could've at least done top 20 before SPS was factored in.

New Releases are dominating the early top 10 selling albums for the current week, starting Friday, Feb. 26:

                                          1. I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It by The 1975
                                          2. This Unruly Mess I’ve Made by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
                                          3. Dig in Deep by Bonnie Raitt
                                          5. For All Kings by Anthrax
                                          7. Day One by From Ashes to New

On the song side, Kelly Clarkson’s strong and emotional performance on American Idol last week has propelled her song, Piece by Piece, to the #1 selling song this week, and her album of the same title to the #6 selling album and #2 album in terms of total consumption.

NEW RELEASES UPDATE: THE 1975 GROOVING TO #1

Dirty Hit/Interscope's The 1975 will easily hit #1 on this week's HITS sales and SPS charts. The band's bow will double Macklemore’s numbers and beat chart champ Adele by at least 20k.

                                                • I am not surprised by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. They waited a long time, Downtown wasn't a big hit (let alone close to Thrift Shop), there's been some controversy surrounding the guy, and all that combined with the always-difficult second album means this is what you get.

Still surprised by The 1975's success in the US though.

I agree. Same Love worked in his favor... a white guy bitching about his "privilege" and apologizing for being white however didn't exactly tug at heartstrings because it wasn't like he was going to take his proceeds from the sales and donate them to struggling black artists. There's a bit of a SJW backlash and Macklemore comes off as the ultimate Social Justice Warrior.
