  • Deconstructing Leo 2.0 | 2018 | Complete Noms! Soon awards

    [center:2rrhkfph][/center:2rrhkfph]
As I am secretly updating a lot of links in my Deconstructing Leo thread, planning to restart it, and inspired by this, here I create this thread for slowly sharing my personal faves from 1980 - nowadays... so it will include my whole life as i was born sept 1979.

It will be presented in an award style but the results will be in a ranking style. IT will take time, but in a couple of minutes I'll post 1990 finalists.

Genres: Electronic&Dance, Latin, Alt&Rock, Rap&Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Rock, Pop, New Artist
Fileds: Songs and Album of each genre, then from all the #1s I'll choose the Song and Album of the year

Hope some of you enjoy it as much as I will.

Note: 1990 awards relates to music released between Oct 1st 1989 until Sep 30th 1990
My noms result after an intenserevision of what wilipedia announce as the Year in Music. I check songs on Spotify/You Tube and try to highlight the best for me. I try to think about that particular year.

                    10. Kylie Minogue - Never Too Late
                    9. Dusty Springfield - Reputation
                    8. Soul II Soul feat. Marcia Lewis - Get a Life

I was introduced to them in an Artist League, and as I was revisiting each year, I found their music worth to mention

                    7. Cocteau Twins - Iceblink Luck
                    6. D-Mob - C mon And Get My Love
                    5. Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

The album was not eligible as it was released prior to Oct 1st 1989, but this single was eligible and worth a top 5 placing.

                    4. Black Box - Everybody Everybody
                    Great track!

                    3. Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart / What Is Love
The video is so reminiscent of the 90s!!! This track was everywhere back then.

                    2. Lisa Stansfield - All Around the World
Fantastic song, radio played this to death

                    1. Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Undoubtly the winner here. I used to go dancing to a place where this song was a MUST, and it was way into the 2000s!

                    6. Kylie Minogue - Enjoy Yourself
                    5. Dusty Springfield - Reputation
                    4. Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

                    3. Soul II Soul - Vol. II: 1990 - A New Decade

                    2. Lisa Stansfield - Affection

                    1. Depeche Mode - Violator
Key songs: World In My Eyes, Personal Jesus, Halo, Waiting for the Night and Enjoy The Silence

                      Interesting concept,
and such a great variety of music styles.
                      Admire you for that
(around this time i stop listening anything that weren't indie/alternative)

                      Best dance/electronic song
                      7. Cocteau Twins - Iceblink Luck
Never considered Cocteau twins as a dance act

                      also your # 1 is a classic

Some of the best dance/guitar songs (for me) from 1990

                      the Charlatans - Then
                      Happy mondays - Step on

Dance-Alt and Alt-Rock will probably have some cross-nominations. I had a lot of doubts but in the end just followed my own interpretation on genres
I went dancing all my teen years to a place where this style of songs would be on and I can see them as non dance but then I danced to this!

                        Regarding the tracks your share:
My bloody Valentine - Soon: good, first time hearing this
the Charlatans - Then: ok, this was very good, great for this saturday afternoon
Happy mondays - Step on: another good track
Primal scream - Loaded: PS will be around sometime in the future... in the Dance category. This was GREAT, my fav so far
the Soup dragons - Mother Universe: mmmm not sure but maybe because it was after PS
Flowered Up - It's on great track, nice video!
the Shamen - Move any mountain: ok, this was def dance!
Saint Etienne - Only love can break your heart second fav of this list after PS

I can tell you that 1991 will find one nominee that was originally introduced to me by you...

Thanks for always be around and try&share. Really appretiate that!

I know! But revisiting her gave me a lot of memories of my childhood years! That album in particular was my fav back then. We won't find her around anymore as in 1990 I somehow grew up musically and started to like "grown-up" music But cheers to childhood!

                              Cerati forever <3

I guess I was never into her music (I actually hate what she represented in the 90s in Brazil), but yeah, childhood always bring tones of guilty pleasures.

I love that you nominated Soda Stereo for the FSC, can't wait to check it out.

Oh and that Violator and Enjoy the Silence wins are awesome! Also, Badalamenti's nom is AMAZING, I'll obviously be rooting for him!

Will love to check out all the Latin sections. Used to listen to tons of it when I was learning (sort of :x ) the language.
PS: Also, lifted an eyebrow (both actually) when I spotted Xuxa!

I think it was impossible for Depeche Mode to lose that award! What a song & album! Strong contenders for Song and Album of the Year!
Glad you enjoy Badalamenti! Great album, probably as I loved season 1 of Twin Peaks!

Zoom is a good SS track, but I went to their poppiest sound in order to have at least a chance to score 30 points this month!

We were three brothers growing up at home, and each of us had a clear & different taste in music. CDs were all around the place! My big brother (I am the youngest) was very into rock&roll and alternative, so many of these nominees were already known by me. He had like 1000+ cds, and when I was a little younger I visited his discography a lot. My other brother was more into 50s-60s music, I was pop oriented.

                                      10. Rush - Show Don't Tell
                                      9. The Black Crowes - Jealous Again
                                      8. Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing
                                      7. Alice in Chains - We Die Young
                                      6. Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
                                      5. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
                                      4. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Ship Song
It was very hard to rank them, all good, but eventually I favour female-oriented alt music.

                                      3. All About Eve - Road to Your Soul
Behind me, a caravan weighed down
With bad dreams and ghosts of apologies
There's no room, no room inside
For a hitcher with a suitcase of pride

                                      2. Suzanne Vega - Book of Dreams
                                      1. Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
The song and video is heartbreaking. Very beautiful. No doubt about it being #1.

                                      6. Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
                                      5. Alice in Chains - Facelift
                                      4. Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
                                      3. Sonic Youth - Goo
Consisiten set of songs, with highlights: Dirty Boots, Tunic, Kool Thing, Disappearer and Cinderella's Big Score.

                                      2. Suzanne Vega - Days of Open Hand
Tired of Sleeping, Book of Dreams, Those Whole Girls (Run in Grace) and Pilgrimaje are highlights.

                                      1. Kate Bush - The Sensual World
This Woman's Work alone makes this the best album! But other great tracks such as The Sensual World, The Fog (fantastic), Reaching Out and Deeper Understanding

                                              10. Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
                                              9. MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This

Two songs that were guilty pleasures nominees.

                                              8. Public Enemy - 911 Is a Joke
Flavor Flav may be a joke after his reality show, but many PE tunes and albums were hot.

                                              7. Queen Latifah feat. De La Soul - Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children
                                              6. Master Ace - Me & The Biz

                                              Two good songs.

                                              5. LL Cool J - The Boomin' System
                                              4. Ice-T - Lethal Weapon

They both kind of depart from their 90s coolness now, but back then they were great. Ice-T was one of my brother's fav.

                                              3. Salt-N-Pepa - Expression
I am not very into their discography, so checking this here was a good experience and they deserve at least a bronze medal

                                              2. Too Short - The Ghetto
                                              Great tune.

                                              1. Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
Outstanding song, and album. Great discovery here.

                                              6. Master Ace - Take a Look Around
                                              5. Queen Latifah - All Hail the Queen

                                              4. Ice-T - The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech...Just Watch What You Say
Worth the mention but not medal worthy.

                                              3. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
Very 90s kind of Rap/HH, but cool enough to get a bronze medal. Some highlights: Around The Way Girl, Eat Em Up L Chill (chiiiilll), Mama Said Knock You Out, Jingling Baby, 6 Minutes Of Pleasure and The Power Of God.

                                              2. Salt-N-Pepa - Blacks' Magic
Highlights: Expression, Negro Wit' An Ego, You Showed Me, Do You Want Me, Start The Party and I Don't Know

                                              1. Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
A very powerful set, from start to finish. The Nigga Ya Love To Hate, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Once Upon A Time In The Projects (great!), A Gangsta's Fairytale, Rollin' Wit The Lench Mob and Who's The Mack.

                                                10. Cameo - I Want It Now
                                                9. Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good
These two songs sound quite alike.

                                                8. Surface - You Are My Everything
                                                7. Anita Baker - Talk To Me
These two are more aligned to the 90s R&B I prefer. Sweet listening.

                                                6. Robert Cray - The Forecast (Calls for Pain)
Probably one of the nominees that aged the better.

                                                5. Quincy Jones, Ray Charles & Chaka Khan - I'll Be Good To You
                                                Ray was great.

                                                4. Luther Vandross - Here And Now
What a voice. Clean and effortless.

                                                3. Regina Belle - Baby Come To Me
                                                2. Janet Jackson - Escapade
                                                1. En Vogue - Hold On
Very tight top 3. Kept changing places but somehow decided that En Vogue deserved the song. The first part of the song is fantastic

                                                6. Cameo - Real Men... Wear Black
                                                5. Tony! Toni! Toné! - The Revival
                                                4. Anita Baker - Compositions
Three fine albums but not as strong as the top 3

                                                3. Robert Cray - Midnight Stroll
Blues all over the place. Aside for The Forecast, These Things is cool, and also Bouncin' Back, Consequences and Move A Mountain.

                                                2. En Vogue - Born to Sing
Hit&Miss group for me, but this album has highlights: Lies, Hold On, Part Of Me, Just Can't Stay Away and Don't Go.

                                                1. Quincy Jones - Back on the Block
I am not very into Quincy's work, so this album was a discovery: I Don't Go For That, I'll Be Good To You, The Places You Find Love, Setembro and Tomorrow

                                                  10. Fleetwood Mac - Save Me
                                                  9. Heart - All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You
                                                  8. Billy Idol - Cradle of Love

                                                  Heart and Billy are classics

                                                  7. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory
A good song, this was my first ever cd alongside Joyride by Roxette.

                                                  6. Tracy Chapman - Crossroads
                                                  5. Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire
                                                  4. Eric Clapton - Bad Love

Probably one of Tracy's favorite of mine. Billy and Eric are big and almost medal worthy.

                                                  3. AC/DC - Thunderstruck
They are great. This song is fantastic.

                                                  2. INXS - Suicide Blonde
Revisiting this early 90s music made me rediscover this great band

                                                  1. Iggy Pop with Kate Pierson - Candy
Kate Pierson delivers here and connects with Iggy to produce a gem.

                                                  6. Billy Joel - Storm Front
                                                  5. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory
                                                  4. Iggy Pop - Brick by Brick

Three good albums! But not as good as the following ones.

                                                  3. Tracy Chapman - Crossroads
Crossroads open the album in a peak point, then some other peaks: Bridges, Freedom Now, Subcity, A Hundred Years and themarvellous All That You Have Is Your Soul.

                                                  2. Eric Clapton - Journeyman
Great journey! Pretending, Anything For Your Love, Bad Love, Running ON Faith, No Alibis (best) and Lead Me On

                                                  1. INXS - X
After a fantastic start with Suicide Blonde, Disappear just blows my mind. By My Side, Lately.
