  • Benny's All-Time Top 200 Songs - done

For a long time I thought about doing a countdown of my all-time favourite songs. The last time I opened such a thread was a long time ago and my taste in music has changed since then - I overplayed many songs I used to like, while (re)discovering and reevaluating many others.

So I will start with a top 200 countdown, in alphabetical order (it's impossible to rank the songs!), posting one song every couple of days, so hopefully I will be finished by the end of this year!

      #1 Toto - Africa

The first song on the countdown is one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s, a song that I never get tired of, despite the fact that I've listened to it a billion times.

Other Toto songs I love: 'Hold the Line', '99', 'I'll Be Over You' and 'Stranger in Town'.

I feel like this is a much better was of doing it than my countdown.

          Africa is obviously legendary.

I like Africa. My favourite is Hold the line.

It's difficult to find the best way to present an all-time countdown.
Glad we agree that Africa is legendary!

I just checked out the Weezer cover and it's really good, thanks for helping me discover it.

#2 Toad the Wet Sprocket - All I Want (1992)

I like many alternative rock bands like Collective Soul, Live, Gin Blossoms, REM, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. The latter are featured twice on my countdown, their first entry being their first US top 20 single 'All I Want'.

Other Toad the Wet Sprocket songs I like: 'Walk on the Ocean', 'Fall Down', 'The Moment'.

What an awful name for a band. The song is good, mainly for the chorus - don't particularly like the vocals on the bridge but middle 8 is good.

I agree that their band name is not great! Thanks for checking out the song.

#3 Ace of Base - All That She Wants (1993)

Next up is one of the biggest hits of 1993, a fantastic reggae-pop-dance track. Ace of Base went on to record many other great tunes and are one of my favourite 90s pop bands.

Other Ace of Base songs I love: 'The Sign', 'Beautiful Morning', 'Don't Turn Around', 'Everytime It Rains', 'Happy Nation', 'Living in Danger', 'Never Gonna Say I'm Sorry', 'Unspeakable', 'Wheel of Fortune'.

This should be a great list.

All three songs so far are very good, especially “Africa”, a timeless 80s gem.

Dutch singer Salemme did a cover of this Ace of Base's hit in 2009. Her version (my # 22 in Year-end chart) sounds very similar with the original, which was # 1 in my retro chart before.

My celebrity crushes : Monika Sedziuviene, Kristina Ivanova (YVA).
In my head I like to imagine LastDreamer in the land of Lithuania right now with a suitcase of simcards, a box of chocolates and a wedding ring. It would be a great base for an epic Eurovision fan fiction.

Didn't know All I want. Even though not totally my cup of tea, still a nice song.

All that she wants is good and a modern classic. Sure, I love some songs of them much more, but that doesn't change that this is a good song and part of my childhood, the song was so present.

"All That She Wants" is certainly the highlight of the first three - it's pretty close to my own all-time top 200,
as are several of the other Ace of Base hits that you mention. It took a while to spread beyond Scandinavia
                                  - but once it started, there was no stopping it.....

"Africa" has recently been sampled on a new release by Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, "Selfish". Perhaps they
were tempted to use it because it's one of a minority of tracks from the early eighties that regularly reappear
at the top end of I-Tunes charts and in national charts that reflect digital sales of back-catalogue titles. This
would suggest that quite a few music consumers are still downloading it after discovering it for the first time!

#4 Whitney Houston - All the Man That I Need (1990)

'All the Man That I Need' is the first of several Whitney Houston songs to appear on my countdown. What many people don't know is the fact that it is a cover version, as it was originally recorded by American singer Linda Clifford in 1982. Whitney transformed the song into a fantastic power ballad thanks to her unique vocals.
