    MSSA #52 of 2016

    Finish it off Already!

What a year! 2K16's final issue of 2016 has all the surprises and emotions in it one needs for a class act season finale. The cliffhanger is just as mind blowing as las year. If you bet your money on either Mengoni or Williams for the Christmas #1 on the albums chart, you didn't know the MSSA. In a surprise dominational coup, Italian vocal trio Il Volo - who snatched two MSSA Awards this week - annihilated all the competition. Il Volo amassed 306 overall scrobbles and were able to place 4 albums inside the Top 20 this week. New releases by Usher, Dawes, Tiziano Ferro and of course George Michael's heartbreaking passing are well represented. This week also marks the first week in which all of the albums top 30 entries amassed at least 30 scrobbles or better. Make sure you catch the YEC countdown on January 1st 2017 and find out who the #1 artist of 2016 is. Also, don't miss the main categories of the MSSA Awards 2016.

                          #20.(39) - 1.238 scrobbles - Whitney Houston (+19)

Whitney Houston remains a powerhouse artist on the MSSA. This year the vocal legend returned to the top 20. Her biggest song on the MSSA was "I love the Lord" which is why her biggest albums was "The Preacher's Wife" Soundtrack. The album amassed 240 scrobbles - making it one of the best performing holiday albums of 2016. Among her catalogue "My Love is Your Love" ranks second with 176 scrobbles, followed by 2002's "Just Whitney" with 120 scrobbles and her second album "Whitney" which collected 111 spins in 2016.
                          #19.(14) - 1.256 scrobbles - Adele (-5)

Adele represents everything that is great about this new generation of singers. She is witty, humble and simply a real talent. Her album "25" remains one of the most successful releases by a female artist in MSSA history and is well represented in 2016. The album amassed a staggering 1,196 scrobbles. Adele was most successful during the first six months than the second half of the year.

Alicia Keys returned to the spotlight in 2016 with a brand new album, called "Here". The album became an instant R&B staple and won the MSSA Award for Best R&B / Urban Album. Alicia's biggest hit of 2016 was "Hallelujah".
                                #17.(50) - 1.374 scrobbles - Sia (+33)

Sia had a tremendous year 2016. The Australian Pop-Queen has an interesting career of ups and downs behind her. It seems like she found her spot among the greats today. Did you know that for a brief instant in 2011, Sia was the most scrobbled overall artist during my LastFm Era? Sia won the MSSA in the category Best Pop Solo Performance for Big Girls Cry.
                                #16.(RE) - 1.496 scrobbles - Lissie (RE)

Lissie has released one of the biggest albums and singles of 2016. It really was her year. Her hit single Daughters was a huge smash and amassed 250 scrobbles so far (= Gold). Her album My Wild West has been certified double platinum and is one of the most successful albums of all times.

                                  #15.(40) - 1.520 scrobbles - Bruce Springsteen (+25)

Bruce Springsteen proves to be one of the most prolific male solo artists of all times on my charts. The Boss makes the top 20 yet again. He is simply a Year End Chart staple. His autobiographical "Chapter and Verse" album was his most prominent release, reaching 404 scrobbles. But the Boss has many more albums on his YEC shortlist, including: Born in the USA (380 scrobbles), Tunnel of Love (194 scrobbles), Nebraska (153 scrobbles) and Human Touch (116 scrobbles). His most prolific tune of 2016 was "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" with an even 100 spins.
                                  #14.(456) - 1.544 scrobbles - Emeli Sandé (+442)

Last year Emeli Sandé only received 1 scrobble in all the year and finished at number 456 among all acts played in 2015. This year, however, the British legend returned to the scene with a brilliant sophomore release and consequently, she storms back into the top 15 on the YEC. Sandé is still up for some Major MSSA Awards this season. Breathing Under Water and Happen belong to the best singles of 2016. Those 2 songs scanned 137 and 143 scrobbles respectively.
                                  #13.(NE) - 1.626 - Walking On Cars (NEW)

There was a moment in 2016 when Walking on Cars were the alpha and the omega of the MSSA charts. Their melodic, authentic and dramatic take on pop music proved to be inescapeable and spread like wildfire. The group spawned 2 number 1 singles in 2016 and their album Everything This Way spent 5 consecutive weeks atop the albums chart. Everything This way has obtained a triple platinum certification and became one of the most listened to albums of all times.
                                  #12.(320) - 1.870 - Clueso (+308)

Neuanfang! Darum geht's doch.
                                  #11.(13) - 1.924 - Coldplay (+2)

Chris Martin and Co. slightly miss the Top 10 on the Year End Chart again. But what a year it was. Up & Up reached #1 and they've won 2 MSSA Awards. They had a busy year touring and being incredible as always. But when you are as creative, you better find a way to release your inner artist. Now the numbers: A Head Full of Dreams amassed a stunning 1,542 scrobbles this year, while almost one third of that comes from Up & Up alone. The track was played a staggering 505 times.

                                    #10.(30) - 2,195 scrobbles - Céline Marie Claudette Dion, CC, OQ (+20)

Mademoiselle Dion enters the top 10 this year and I have no clue if she ever made the top 10 before that. Now most haterz will now jump and act all superior in saying that she may not have had a hit single since Jesus walked in sandals. But that - mes amis - is not correct. Miss Céline did not collect 1 number one single in 2016, she collected TWO. Her new French album Encore Un Soir was played 856 times. The title track and one of those infamous number 1 singles accounts for 199 of those scrobbles, while the other number one single - ORDINAIRE - was played 102 times. 2K16 was certainly the year of Céline's French career. Not only did EUS do extremely well, S'il Suffisait D'aimer amassed 403 scrobbles in its own run, while D'Eux made it to 330 plays too. Céline is only 1 of 2 women who made this year's YEC Top 10. Here's to Céline: She may have lost the love of her life, but she is still standing.
                                    #9.(188) - 2,488 scrobbles - M83 (+179)

Wowsa, M83! Nobody really knows how many members this tremendous group / duo / band / project has, but one thing's for sure, it works even not knowing who does what. Junk was THE album of this year's spring season. It sounded fresh, exciting, unusual, electronic and above all historic. Do It Try It became a huge #1 single for them, amassing 371 scrobbles and ruling the chart for 4 consecutive weeks. The album, however, has been played 2,399 times - it is therefore quadruple times platinum and one of the biggest albums in MSSA music history. It ended 6 frames at #1 on the Albums Chart in 2016 - the longest running #1 album of the year respectively.
                                    #8.(NE) - 3,062 scrobbles - Zayn - (NEW)

Zayn Oh Boy. What can I say about one of this year's undisputable queens? Let me say this, he didn't just rule the charts, he straight up slayed. Mind of Mine is the name of his debut solo album. It has amassed an unbelievable 2,876 scrobbles so far - it is certified 5x multiplatinum: one of the biggest albums in music history. It achieved all this with only 2 weeks atop the Albums Chart. The album spawned 3 consecutive (!!!!!!!!) number one singles: It's You, Befour and Pillowtalk. Zayn is the absolute biggest new artist of 2016 - by far!
                                    #7.(90) - 3,103 scrobbles - John Lennon (+83)

John Lennon is the biggest and best musician who has ever lived. John completely destroyed the competition in 2016 when in August his entire discography would scan 1,903 scrobbles. In fact summer 2016 was his time. His entire discography re-charted this year and he would also collect his first ever MSSA #1 single with "I'm Stepping Out" which was played 105 times over the year. His most successful album was "Plastic Ono Band" which was played 713 times. It was certified platinum. His success also sparked re-interest in a very special band which is yet to appear in the top 10.

                                        #6.(RE) - 3,195 scrobbles - Bosse (RE-Entry)

                                        #5.(61) - 3,779 scrobbles - The Beatles (+56)

The Beatles enjoyed a comeback and popularity which is yet to be matched by another artist. They established a new alltime record for most scrobbles in a single week with 806 plays. With exactly 2,300 scrobbles in August they also established the biggest 1 month scrobbles total. Rubber Soul became their most prominent release during 2016. The album had not previously charted and peaked at #1. Rubber Soul enjoyed 1,049 scrobbles in 2016 and has obtained a double platinum certification. The next best 11 Beatles albums also amassed 100 scrobbles or better. Had the cut off for the YEC been set on November first, the Beatles would have even been the most played act of 2016. With over 4,000 scrobbles to date, The Beatles have become the 10th biggest act of all times in the LastFm era.
                                        #4.(24) - 3,920 - Kings of Leon (+20)

Unquestionably the biggest band of 2016, Kings of Leon set new trends and more importantly new records. Their latest evergreen album, called Walls put its mark on the year. With 3,114 scrobbles in 2016, Walls is the only album which made it past six times platinum. Although, Walls only stayed at #1 on the albums chart for 3 weeks, it made sure to spawn the longest running #1 single of the year with Find Me. Find Me blocked anyone from the #1 position for a staggering 7 consecutive weeks - and it still ranks second on the current chart. Walls grabbed the Award for Best Rock / Alternative album and the band is up for 3 more major category awards at the MSSA Awards. 2K16 was the band's overall strongest year. Furthermore, Find Me became the only single of 2016 which obtained a double platinum certification for 600 scrobbles or better - so far.
                                        #3.(3) - 4.225 - Mariah Carey (=)

Miss Carey, Mariah! She is not of this world. Year after year Carey proves to be a titan. Come what may, she has a top 10 position secured without even trying - although she did once miss the Top 10. Mariah has 13 albums this year which have been scrobbled more than 100 times - which is a sum that even bests The freakin' Beatles. Her discography is led by the Elusive Chanteuse album which amassed another 719 plays - not that the 2nd most scrobbled album in history would need any more, but also Butterfly came pretty close to 4 digit numbers with another load of 678 scrobbles. Her biggest single of 2016 was indeed a single. Infamous - a duet with Jussie Smollet just scratched on the Gold level mark at 172 scrobbles, furthermore the Butterfly song also hit over 100 plays. In 2016 Mariah has hit 15,000 scrobbles and remains the alltime leader - however for the 2nd time in a row she was bested by one of the two remaining acts in the top 10. Afterall, we live in a man's world and literally nobody could put the remaining two in the corner.
