To be fair, I listened to the Rarities LP on Friday and I think it's such a lengthy listen that I haven't really had time yet to digest my faves. I'm certainly enamoured with "Here We Go Around Again" and "Just Be Good to Me" because I love the bouncy playfulness of both tracks' melodies, and that "Anytime You Need a Friend" live performance was no note short of spectacular, but I think I just need a bit more time to really get through the album. It's better than I expected it'd be!
Glad you enjoyed my tongue-lashing Regarding the overall length of The Rarities, I still need to add all the Tokyo Dome tracks to my library I'm sure there's some VERY-worthwhile performances on there, but I was way more interested in absorbing the first disc's "new" material first.
                  • Your newfound appreciation for "1000 Doves" makes my heart sour! It's definitely in my Chromatica Top 5 (probably Top 3). Those Survivor results were certainly something! I was somewhat aware of "Alice" being a fan fave, but a lot of those other rankings...
                  • **Hug** for the double breath-focused tracks inside your Top 5. Seems like a sign of a particuarly trying day.
                  • "Treasure" hasn't crossed my mind in a minute, but it had the best longevity of any Unorthodox Jukebox offerings on my chart. His third singles keep following an unfortunate pattern of getting over-shadowed by two preceding smashes on official charts/amongst the GP.
                  • Not sure if I'll be able to pop on and comment, but I'll definitely peek in to check how "Positions" fares tomorrow.
                  Yet another high-flying chart, Akini!

What are your faves from the "new" material now that you've had a bit of time for the tracks to sink in?

                    "Sour Candy", ha impact >>>

I'm not sure why "1000 Doves" is just now hitting me, but definitely after having been social distancing and away from my family in a new city for the last seven-plus months, the lyrics hit hard hard.

I was satisfied with the Survivor results. "Babylon" looked like it might've gotten axed prematurely so for it to make it all the way to the top two and put up a pretty decent fight was way more than I'd expected.

Yeah, these are weird times. I'm grateful to still have a job, which is something I wouldn't have felt the need to be grateful for at the top of the year, but having to function in the midst of this global crisis is weird. My motivation comes and goes. Interestingly enough, the evening portion of yesterday was pretty awesome for me.

Even then, two of the three managed to go top 5 and "Finesse", as single no. 4, went top 3. I feel like "Versace..." was released prematurely.

What are your thoughts on the song? I find it...basic.

It is! I think it's my most-played track from The Rarities.

                                • Elton John #1 on Oct. 20! That was the day Teyana released a video for Lose Each Another - and it's awesome. Did that prompt the Elton John return?

Janelle at #2 on Saturday - her power - and ahead of Ari - did Positions not get more than curiosity spins?

I see I'm possibly getting a preview of the tracks you picked for Chaka!

Oh man, I guess you already know we disagree on the 21 Savage tracks!

Yes, I think I like her sound. She kinda reminds me a bit of Dido.

I randomly clicked on the "Lose Each Other" video days after it was released so no. My sister and I actually did a 'Verzuz' and that George Michael version of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was her closing track.

Correct. The song is uber basic.

Um...there's a funny story I'll share later about my Chaka Khan selections, but I'll just say the answer is no.

The songs on Folklore are perfect for easy listening so I think that plays a big role. Also, I really do love many of the stories.

I actually have a list of daily goals that I draft each morning and I try not to go to bed until I get everything done. Updating my charts is a fixture on that list.

Disc 1 is a pretty consistent collection overall, but I've got a soft spot for her cheesy early uptempos, so "Here We Go Around Again" and "All I Live For" join the esteemed ranks of "Someday," "Prisoner," "To Be Around You," "Dreamlover," "Now That I Know," "I've Been Thinking About You," etc.

I don't share Mariah's relationship with God, so "I Pray" doesn't do a ton for me, but the only major dud IMO is "One Night" (and maaaaybe "Save The Day") "One Night" becomes a thoroughly-unpleasant listening experience as soon as the intro ends, and whatever message she was attempting to send seems really misguided/half-arsed. If it was actually intended as some sort of AIDS commentary (as some fans surmise), "just don't have sex" isn't a remotely productive or insightful contribution to that discussion, especially by the mid-90's. The whole "steer clear of those disease-ridden hookers" verse is unfortunate on many levels, especially given her (ex)-sister's struggles. I completely understand why people on her team locked that track in the vault (until now). What are your Disc 1 impressions these days?

Apparently my brain can't focus on just one Chromatica bop at a time.

**Hug** "1000 Doves" really is moving. Another prime example of how Chromatica's material works perfectly well as energetic dancefloor anthems when you just groove along to the beat, but when you key into every word she's singing, there's often a rather heart-wrenching/bittersweet story being shared. Not hopeless, just...downtrodden, yearning.

Yeah, "Versace..." absolutely didn't get the love and attention it deserved. Shocking that it has the dishonor of being one of his worst-performing proper singles.

Ugh, it's aggressively mediocre/dull, especially for a song all about sex (hot on the heels of an Internet-breaking anthem like "WAP") Suddenly, "Boyfriend" seems totally lead-single-worthy in comparsion. On that note, it also breaks my heart that THIS is the lead single to follow a career-highlight like "Thank U, Next." Maybe a 2020 quarantine album wasn't the right call for Ari...
                                                • ...unlike the epic opus that is folklore. Granted, "Cardigan" isn't among that album's strongest offerings, so hopefully the same holds true for "Positions." I also missed "August"s 10th day on top, so a big, belated for that milestone!
                                                • I don't keep tabs on Toni as well as you do, but "Dance" is certainly add-worthy.

"Here We Go Around Again" is so breezy that it's irresistible. I've not yet connected with "All I Live For", though.

Aw, I'm actually a big "Save the Day" fan! Its message is perfect for the present struggle we're in. I hardly even remember "One Night".

"Mesmerized" has been getting a lot of love from the other personal chart creators here, so I've been giving that one a good number of spins recently trying to figure out what it is that they seem to hear with it. I think it's okay.

I think you mentioned "Lullaby of Birdland" before. I really like that one and it was pretty immediate, too. I already knew and loved "Everything Fades Away". I always thought "Slipping Away" was just okay. Disc 1 for me is fine.

Another prime example of how Chromatica's material works perfectly well as energetic dancefloor anthems when you just groove along to the beat, but when you key into every word she's singing, there's often a rather heart-wrenching/bittersweet story being shared. Not hopeless, just...downtrodden, yearning.
Perfect description! I kinda love that about the songs 'cause when you just wanna have fun and dance in your living room, you can surrender to the dance-pop production and when you want to actually be reflective, you can dive into the lyrics. Gaga did well with the album, imo.

His singles are all so great that it was only ever going to happen to good songs.

On that note, it also breaks my heart that THIS is the lead single to follow a career-highlight like "Thank U, Next." Maybe a 2020 quarantine album wasn't the right call for Ari...
Yeah, the thing about Ari's voice is that it works so well on those chill/cool tracks, but only if the song is decently written. I feel like her voice, on the wrong kind of song, can also come off as super disengaged, as it does on "Positions". The video is cute tho. Makes me think about what could've been four years ago...but also what could be four years from now.

Is it too early to ask where you'd rank Folkore among T-Swizzle's LPs?
