  • What a wonderful Christmas chart you had. This holiday season has been extra busy for me, so I missed when you posted last week, but how fun to have Mariah's classic at the top and one of your faves Tay at #2. But of course, I love it all from the Glee Cast making an appearance (with one I didn't remember!) to Ari and Allie. Just starting to get back into the swing of things with the music that came out while I was in my Christmas haze, so it is nice to see some of the other songs like form Grimes and Dua.

Of course, I love that Kacey made the top five before this year's season ended.

The 19th-No. 1-hype was massive I really didn't think I'd ever get to see Mariah atop the Hot 100 again, and it was her first No. 1 since I started doing my chart in late-'09, so it felt special on several levels.

I was pretty obsessed with Glee during its first two seasons...and then completely stopped watching I'd gotten into the show with a couple of my closest college friends, so after we graduated and went our separate ways, the viewing experience just wasn't the same without them. The Glee Cast racked up uhLOT of plays from me during those two seasons, though! With the way they released their covers, it was like an artist dropping a new EP every single week.

I owe you for alerting me to Kacey's Christmas contribution! Easily one of my favorite festive discoveries of the 2019 holiday season.

Thanks again, CT Happy New Year!

          • Happy new year (and decade) to you!

Taking a look first at your year-end top 50, and it looks like Taylor's won 2019 for you (and probably the decade as well, if you were to do a decade-end list). A number of my top Lover moments are featured ("The Man", "Cruel Summer", the title track) though I am a bit disappointed "Afterglow", "Miss Americana...", and "Daylight" couldn't scrap enough points to make the cut. We have different converging Lover points, but a similar appreciation for the LP overall, I think.

I'm also happy that some of my 2018 faves made your 2019 cut ("Baby" and "Thank U, Next").

            49.) "BAD IDEA" | Ariana Grande | 113pts
            44.) "THE MAN" | Taylor Swift | 119pts
            42.) "BABY" | Clean Bandit ft. Marina & Luis Fonsi | 120pts
            33.) "RITUAL" | TiŽsto ft. Jonas Blue & Rita Ora | 135pts
            32.) "THANK U, NEXT" | Ariana Grande | 137pts | No. 20 of 2018
            31.) "THE ARCHER" | Taylor Swift | 137pts
            28.) "CRUEL SUMMER" | Taylor Swift | 140pts
            24.) "UNDO" | Naughty Boy ft. Calum Scott & Shenseea | 151pts
            21.) "HAPPY PLACE" | Terror Jr | 160pts
            19.) "FREAKING ME OUT" | Ava Max | 163pts
            16.) "FIND U AGAIN" | Mark Ronson ft. Camila Cabello | 174pts
            14.) "CRAVE" | Madonna ft. Swae Lee | 179pts

            08.) "NEVER REALLY OVER" | Katy Perry | 219pts
            07.) "I THINK HE KNOWS" | Taylor Swift | 224pts
06.) "ME!" | Taylor Swift ft. Brendon Urie | 228pts
            05.) "DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS" | Taylor Swift | 239pts
            04.) "TOO MUCH" | Carly Rae Jepsen | 257pts
            01.) "LOVER" | Taylor Swift | 286pts |

Glad to see your first chart of the new decade is flag-shipped by a song with such a lovely message.

Also great to see two Tinashe songs here, and "Know Better" climbing to the top 10! As you know, I love "Juice" so the re-entry at #6 is a sight for the eyes!

Turns out, it actually totally is (Well, except it's even better than what M5 have been releasing themselves lately).
M5 had such great stuff at the top of the decade, though!

Right back at ya! You seemed to flourish more and more with each passing year in the 2010's, so I look forward to seeing how epic you'll continue to become in the 2020's.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in myself for producing such a homogenous Year-End Top 10 Previously, no act had ever placed more than 4 songs inside a Year-End Top 10 (Carly Rae in 2012)...then Taylor landed 6 in 2019. Last year had several albums that felt "fine, but a step down" for me (Carly Rae, Madonna, Ed, might add Ari and Tove Lo in there too), with Lover being the biggest exception to that trend, but this outcome has me really re-considering using a strictly points-based system in the future.

Speaking of Lover, while we're far from perfectly in-sync, at least it's a better result than Caution, where our personal Top 5/Bottom 5 were completely flipped.

Songs For You got somewhat drowned out by year/decade-end reminiscing (and me belatedly noticing that CYN had dropped an EP) last week, so it'll have a much bigger impact on my next chart. Your YEC is to thank for that "Juice" re-entry! (I'd peeked into your thread and saw its triumph before sitting down to compose a proper response).

Agreed. M5 might be the most extreme example of an act where my interest basically completely dropped off a cliff by the end of last decade (among acts who continued to release new material).

              Thanks again, Akini!

Great to see Galantis still doing well. Also Lizzo and the return of Ritual!

I like that Ava Max song but prefer Salt at the moment.

I only had a couple of random Tinashe singles in my library until Akini's enthusiasm for her latest album encouraged me to give it a try. Definitely worth it!

Ha, yeah, I've seen that sentiment a lot around UKMIX ("Salt" >>> "On Somebody"). I like both, but "On Somebody" has really grown on me. All that repetition in the chorus burrowed into my brain more than I expected.

                      Thanks again, ste!

Hey sergej! Many thanks for stopping by!

"On Somebody" really grew on me more than I initially expected. When I first heard it, I thought it'd end up as one of my least favorite Ava singles, but that reptitive chorus wound up hooking me in a big way. Glad to hear you're into all those other entries too!

"You Should Be Sad" is the most excited I've been about a new single in a while! "Rare" is really solid too - just had unfortunate timing to get stuck right behind YSBS. Overall, Rare has felt "good, but not great" for me, but at least a handful of its tracks should stick around a little longer.

                                Thanks again, sergej!

Halsey really "wow"d me with this one! I definitely wasn't expecting this sound from her, but she nails it. It's like Kylie's Golden material (which I also loved), with an extra edge/bite to the lyrics.

                                  Thanks again, ste!

The decade certainly had some points where I felt like I was languishing, but I'd like to think I emerged from it wiser and stronger than I entered it. Hope you have an epic decade as well! <3

Last year had several albums that felt "fine, but a step down" for me (Carly Rae, Madonna, Ed, might add Ari and Tove Lo in there too), with Lover being the biggest exception to that trend, but this outcome has me really re-considering using a strictly points-based system in the future.
2019 was a weird year in music because there were a tonne of good/great songs, but few (if any) brilliant bangers, so I can certainly understand how an LP you really clicked with managed to dominate your year-end list.

I actually don't think that happened to me with any artist. I added more faves to the list, but I think all the acts I loved coming into the decade, I loved at its end, too.

                                          • I'm stepping back from posting my chart each week - but not leaving UKMIX entirely (just visiting more sporadically now).

Huge "THANKS!" for all the comments, support, and song suggestions over the years <3 It's been a true pleasure getting to share my music tastes and learn about all of yours!
