NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE MUSIC & RANDOM ENGLISH-LANGUAGE INDUCTIONS PART 17 of 40 So since the countdowns of my two favourite artists of all time are done, time to turn my attention into my favourite songs of all time... So this is how it's gonna look like: There's gonna be 40 different segments (10 songs each) which are gonna focus on one or two different themes each time. It's gonna be either a specific artist focus (and here is where the divas come in) or world music focus or both on the same day (albeit on two separate segments). I am not sure if I am making much sense but it is a chance to look back at some of my favourite songs and acts of all time. All you have to do is say a YES or a NO depending on whether you like the song in question to be inducted in my personal Hall of Fame:
A.GREEK 90s ROCK/FOLK (ROMANY INFLUENCES) TOP 10. OK, let me start by saying that I have no clue on the proper description of this genre, I am just making assumptions here, so, greeks, feel free to contradict me, I'd love to actually know this one properly as this is my absolute favourite genre in greek music. As far as I know, there is no distinctive category in Greek for this type of music It is classified as anything from rock to folk, depending on the song and music act. Also there is no specific dance style for this, it is mostly done as belly dance.
What is indisputable though is the common beat in those songs (which is why I put them in the same genre) , the heavy use of the drums as opposed to bouzouki (which is common in greek folk) and the heavy Yugoslav romany-folk influences in Alkistis' and Pyx Lax' careers (the two acts which basically popularized this type of music in the 80s and (mainly) in the 90s). The background beat is very reminiscent of Romany music but, unlike the northern Balkans' romany-folk, here the sound is not as pure and is mixed with a variety of styles. So let's just call it what the title says. If anyone else has a better idea of the origin of this sound in greek pop/folk, please let me know (although I am sure no one will be interested in this countdown lol) As always you can listen to the song by clicking on its title. Enjoy

A.KAITI GARBI TOP 10 OK I was definitely not expecting to ever make this Top 10 but, since Crazy4Brit's greek genes are talking and since I loved Kaiti myself back in the 90s, why not?
Indeed she was probably the biggest greek star of that decade with a string of ridiculously catchy albums to her name but, as soon as she lost Foivos as her composer (he is responsible for Despoina Vandi's huge success) her fortunes changed enormously. She is still releasing an album per year (at least she did until recently) but, in my opinion, other than "Esena Mono", she hasn't done a good song in ages. Still though her 90s output was pretty much unbeatable so here are my Top 10.I do agree btw that "Tha Melagholiso" is her best song ever but I will leave it out to save a place for another song. As always you can listen to the song by clicking on its title. Enjoy
I do love Kolasi (it came 11th) and I enjoy some of the other Kaiti songs you listed although I don't love them. Perasmena Xehasmena is a fabulous song of course but I much prefer the arabic original.
Well I do hate both Anna Vissi and Sakis Rouvas but their duet wasn't bad. Tilefonise Mou: I love it such a great piece of cheese but Vasilis Karras has done so much better. Like Terzis too, Valantis not so much. Soma Mou... well that's the hymn of every truck driver in the greek/cypriot highways I guess. I have seen so many drunk villagers deciding they need to scream the lyrics of that song while in the middle of the road in the middle of the night and dedicate it to whoever b*tch dumped them for whatever reason, that I can't possibly think of it pleasantly

Ah i forgot to say that Ftou Kselefteria became a pretty nice remixed track and it was played pretty much in 2008 in some clubs in my region! When i heard it for the first time i was shocked. I would have never expected to hear:
1- a greek song
2- by Kaiti Garbi
3- released in the 90's
in
1- Italy
2- in clubs
3 in 2008!
Pretty impressive

I love the 'soma mou' issue Anyway from what i remember, those were HUGE and enormous hits in Elladha during that decade!
Antique's best song was Mera Me Ti Mera to me. Opa Opa was a cover. The original was by Sfakianakis (and yes it was pretty annoying, I am surprised every time someone resurrects that song, be it Antique or Despoina Vandi later on lol)

Oh i know it, but it was a hit and i remember tourists dancing to the "opa opa dance" on the beach all the time

'Opa Opa' also was popular in Russia in 2000.
Bulgarian singer Filip Kirkorov sing song 'Fire and water' on russian language, which use Antique's sample or Antique's cover.
(Original: Antique - 'Dinata Dinata')
Well Dinata Dinata is a cover as well. The original was an Armenian instrumental to which the original greek version (by Eleftheria Arvanitaki) added lyrics. Once again the Eleftheria version is far superior to the Antique one
If y'all want an Anna Vissi Top10, shoot me
Although it'll be quite hard to find the 10 best singles of all the billions of great smash songs she has throughout the hundreds of years she's been slaying :-?
I hope you are ironic. I find her soooo annoying, yeah I could probably name 10 songs by her that I consider good songs objectively but if you asked me to compile 10 Anna songs that I subjectively would love to listen to, I'd be at a complete loss lol. Her career should be put in a dictionary with the definition: "biggest waste of an amazing voice in the history of Greek discography"
PS: Who would have thought that out of all these countdowns Kaiti Garbi would get the most responses?

Well obviously I'm being sarcastic and serious at the same time I love loads of her songs and I consider her one of the best things that has happended to greek music the last 30 years or so... lol When I talk about her I always find it hard not to exaggerate But of course it always comes down to personal taste and I see she's not your cup of tea, it's fine

A.TOP 10 EUROVISION PERFORMANCES FROM THE '80s The 80s were kind of a bizarre decade for the Song Contest. Whereas the international pop scene became more playful and kitsch was at its all-time high, the contest seemed to lose its spark. Despite the appearances of both Celine Dion and Ofra Haza in Eurovision during the '80s and its expansion to include almost all of non-communist Europe, the songs became dull, the ratings fell and the golden age of the contest was definitely behind it. Still though, among the endless ballads of the decade, there were still plenty of gems, albeit usually found in the lower places of the rankings. So here are my 10 favourite '80s Eurovision performances. As always you can listen to the song by clicking on its title. Enjoy
