  • INSTEAD OF A RECAP

So I thought instead of having a recap from #100 to #2 to just have a recap of all Prince's Top 40 history. So here are the singles and albums which made it into the Top 40 in the USA or the UK along with their Top 40 chart runs and (most of) their awards. Included also are other artists' albums when at least half the album has been composed by Prince. As far as other artists' singles are concerned, included are only those with significant Prince involvement or straight covers of Prince songs. Not included are songs with minimum Prince involvement (Madonna's "Like A Prayer") and songs which just sample Prince (MC Hammer's "Pray") or use a small segment of a Prince song (Jay-Z and Beyonce's "Bonnie & Clyde") but are, essentially, new compositions. Chart runs are provided for all songs except two singles from 1990. Where chart runs are not shown, the album or single spent just 1 week in the Top 40.

So what could my #1 be? Could it be one of the singles above? Or could it be an album-track such as "Jughead" or a related-artist song such as one by Carmen Electra? You'll find out tomorrow

    • SO HERE IT COMES:

      ____________________________________________________________
      01.LADY CAB DRIVER (1982)
      album "1999" (album track)

..."This is for discrimination and egotists, who think supreme
This is for whoever taught you how to kiss in designer jeans
That's one for, for you have to live
This one's for the rich, not all of 'em, just the greedy
The ones who don't know how to give"...

Yes! My #1 Prince song of all-time is an album track. Featuring the deepest funk of any song in one of Prince's funkiest albums, that's "Lady Cab Driver" for me. An 8-mins jam which, though not musically far from what Prince was composing for The Time at the...em time, it is somehow a more satisfying song than any other Prince song... at least that's how I feel in the moment I am writing this. I have to mention here that the "1999" album was Prince's first mega-selling album peaking at #9 on the BB 200, #4 on R&B, #30 on the UK Albums Chart and all that but, it's all about "Lady Cab Driver" right now. So put the song really loud (not on your laptop, you need something stronger than that to appreciate it), enjoy it (and the lovely photo bellow) and goodbye from this countdown and thank you for following.

      • lol at the picture.

I wouldn't have guessed that would be your N01...in fact I couldn't think of anything obvious that was left.

Also, well done on a splendidly presented countdown.

        • Madonna or dance?

So much dance music I don't like. It can be good but it can be a whole lot of tuneless nonsense that doesn't transfer from a dancefloor to a PC in your house.

          Votes Madonna.

          • Thank you... just in case by dance I mainly mean pop/dance. I hate everything dance but not singalong lol. And it would be kinda retro too. So yeah no trance in my chart...

Then again Madonna will be far easier for me because to rank 100 dance songs will be really hard

But I see where Mariah got inspiration for "The Emancipation Of Mimi" album cover - the only difference being that she wore clothes.
can you commit to be my everything?

Lol I had to go back to the cover to look for the similarity... lol. The only thing I can see is the raised arms... well... Prince and Mariah worked together on a few songs before (I think it was before the Emancipation Of Mimi album but I'm not really sure) but the songs remain unreleased. I hope Mariah or Prince or whoever has them releases them because Mariah's voice would really do justice in Prince's songs and it would be something different for her as well, I am sure her fans would appreciate it.
