20.SEX SHOOTER (performed by Apollonia 6) (1984)
album "APOLLONIA 6"

..."Listen boys...
no girl's body can compete with mine
no girl's rap can top my lines
no girl's kiss can ring your chimes
Come on boy let's make some time"...
Apollonia 6 was Prince's protege girl-group formed when Vanity 6's lead singer Vanity left the group and was subsequently replaced by Patricia (renamed Apollonia) Kotero. They released just one album, which peaked at #62 on BB 200 and #24 on R&B. The irresistibly catchy "Sex Shooter" was the first single taken from that album, helped greatly by the fact that a full performance of the song was included in the film "Purple Rain" (where Apollonia starred). The song peaked at #85 on the Hot 100, #7 on R&B and #7 on Dance/Club Play. Despite receiving a totally unfair Golden Raspberry nomination for Worst Song, it has become sort of an underground '80s pop/dance classic, which has been covered by Shannon among others.

19.HEAD (1980)
album "DIRTY MIND"

..."and you said, "I must confess I wanna get undressed and go to bed"
With that I jammed, you fool, you married me instead
Now morning, noon and night I give you head"...
Yes, this song is about that certain action that everybody loves receiving but for which opinions widely differ when it comes to giving. Singing about "Head" was not usual (to put it mildly) back in 1980 and this song (and "Little Sister" which is about incest) probably did much to establish Prince as an underground sensation. Shock-factor aside, "Head" is musically one of the funkiest songs he ever released with a killer synth-line. Of course the subject matter guaranteed it wouldn't go anywhere near the charts (although it did climb to #5 on Dance/Club Play as an E.P. featuring also "Uptown" and "Dirty Mind").

18.I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER (1979)
album "PRINCE"

..."I ain't got no money
I ain't like those other guys you hang around
It's kinda funny
they always seem to let you down
And I get discouraged, yes you do baby"...
This was Prince's first ever hit single (it peaked at #12 on the Hot 100, #1 on R&B and #2 on Dance/Club Play (along with "Sexy Dancer"). Musically it's a world away from "Head" and the rest of the deep funk Prince would become famous for in the early '80s. Instead, what we have here is a smooth R&B tune. Take a look at the video though and you'll see the Prince we know shining through. The single helped the "Prince" album to become Prince's first hit album, making it to #22 on the BB 200 and #3 on R&B. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" had been covered by Millie Jackson, 50 Cent and Corinne Bailey Rae among others

17.SEXY M.F. (with the New Power Generation) (1992)
album "SYMBOL"

..."I'm even with the blindfold, gagged and bound
I don't mind, see this ain't about sex
It's all about love being in charge of this life and the next
Why all the cosmic talk? I just want you smarter than I'll ever be
when we take that walk"...
This song was the first single taken from Prince's 1992 "Symbol" album and musically it is rap/R&B meets jazz with an eye on the dancefloor. The word "M.F." on the title made sure it was released only in a censored form in the States and was mostly responsible for its poor performance over there (#66 on Hot 100 and #76 on R&B). Still though, it did become a massive hit in the UK (where it peaked at #4) and was released as a video-single as well. The song is also included in Prince's musical "3 Chains O' Gold"

16.GETT OFF (with the New Power Generation) (1991)
album "DIAMONDS AND PEARLS"

..."Honey, them hips is gone, that's alright, I clock 'em that way
Remind me of something James used to say
"I like 'em fat", "I like 'em proud", "ya gotta have a mother for me"
Now move your big *ss 'round this way so I can work on that zipper, baby
Tonight you're a star and I'm the big dipper"...
I swear, the appearance of all sex-related songs next to each other is a pure coincidence lol. The early '90s saw Prince entering the new decade's musical landscape with more ease than most other '80s superstars. His flirt with rap and new jack swing led to the creation of a new backing band (New Power Generation) which essentially debuted in this single. It also led to this fab groove, which resulted from Prince's experimentation with the James Brown 1969 song "Mother Popcorn", his own 1986 single "Glam Slam" as well as his 1990 songs "Love Machine" and "Gett Off" (the b-side to the "New Power Generation" single). The result was a tune which hardly sounded like it came from an artist with a 13 years of career behind him. It made it to #21 on the Hot 100, #6 on R&B, #1 on Dance/Club Play and #4 on the UK Singles Chart. It was released as a video-single as well and it's the song which basically made me seriously interested on Prince. Unfortunately though, as fantastic as the single was, the use of modern new jack sounds in the whole of the "Diamonds And Pearls" albums led to the huge success of that album in the charts (#3 on the BB 200, #1 on R&B and #2 on the UK Albums Chart) on the expense of the quality of the music itself. The album sounds both hit-and-miss and rather dated today. The success of that album also formed the basis for Prince's later dispute with Warner with the unfortunate late '90s side-effects for his career.
