  • • Ha, that line about Christmas lights in "Lover" struck me as odd too. I guess promptly yanking them down must've been the tradition in Taylor's family, but we usually left ours up until "Three Kings Day" in early January.
    • I love that you've crowned Allie X "cult synth goddess" - too true! What stood out to me the most regarding Allie and Lover was the "Little Things" connection with "Death By A Thousand Cuts." I know Allie didn't invent the phrase herself, but I'd never heard of it before "Little Things," and I think the analogy/imagery works better in Allie's song (though I'm still sold on Tay's track too).
    • Speaking of never having heard certain phrases before, "skippy-pop" is new to me, but I definitely plan to steal/use that myself in the future!
    • You're clearly well-versed in a variety of artists (and genres), so your Lover write-up was a really fascinating (and entertaining) read. Of course, it also helps that it was a pretty glowing review.

I never even noticed they had the same phrase! Well, that's some coincidence! She's probably not even aware of Allie but her collaborators will be. Allie's own response:

        -------------------------------------------

        TONY'S ALBUMS CHART: 7th SEPTEMBER 2019

        1 1 Taylor Swift - Lover
        (2 weeks; peak #1)

2 NE Tool - Fear Inoculum SPOTIFY
The first Tool album i don't have in my hands (due to the hard-to-find and expensive physical edition). TBH, i'm not sure it would have helped (and the digital version has more music). It's largely staying to a less impressive variation on what they've already done with little surprises and in some cases it seems like direct lifting of their own work (spot the difference between the drum patterns in 13 years!). But it's still good and 7empest (how do you say that again?) is different enough to give me hope.

        3 2 Eskmo - 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (OTVST - Score) (2 weeks; peak #2)
4 NE Twist Helix - Ouseburn SPOTIFY
Current album from local synth band.

        5 3 Electric Youth - Memory Emotion (4 weeks; peak #1)
6 NE Twist Helix - Manifesto SPOTIFY
7 NE Carter Tutti Void - Triumvirate SPOTIFY
Throbbing Gristle couple and Factory Floor's Nik Void.

8 NE Las Aves - I'll Never Give Up On Love Until I Can Put A Name On It SPOTIFY
New album from diverse French pop trio. Not as pretentious as the LDR-ish title suggests.

9 NE Las Aves - Die In Shanghai SPOTIFY
10 NE Kristeen Young - The SubSet SPOTIFY
11 NE !!! (Chk Chk Chk) - Wallop SPOTIFY
12 NE Caravan Palace - Chronologic SPOTIFY
13 NE Carter Tutti Void - Transverse SPOTIFY
2012 release - mainly recorded live.

        14 4 Angela Perley - 4:30 (5 weeks; peak #1)
        15 5 Josh Garrels - Chrysaline (4 weeks; peak #3)
16 NE Olivia Jean - Night Owl SPOTIFY
If you miss the rockabilly Imelda May, here's a poppier version on Jack White's label.

17 NE Salad - The Salad Way SPOTIFY
The last group you expect to make a comeback!

        18 6 The Night Cafe - 0151 (2 weeks; peak #6)
        19 8 Marina - Love and Fear (22 weeks; peak #1)
        20 11 Hatchie - Keepsake (11 weeks; peak #1)
        21 12 Kim Petras - Clarity (10 weeks; peak #2)
        22 10 Ride - This Is Not A Safe Place (3 weeks; peak #5)
23 NE DZ Deathrays - Positive Rising Pt. 1 SPOTIFY
        24 7 Various Artists - 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (OTVST) (2 weeks; peak #7)
25 NE Sheryl Crow - Threads SPOTIFY
An allstar cast of country, blues, soul and rock acts still can't make this a classic. But it's not Lana.

23 NE Veronica Maggio - Fiender är Tråkigt (Enemies Are Boring)

Both are great. Surprising to see this particular Veronica song charting.

38 NE Blu DeTiger - Tangerine

Yeah, vocal production is definitely the song's weakest point.

          ALBUMS
17 NE Salad - The Salad Way - "everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?" applies to this particular record

She did an unimpressive acoustic style EP. This is more like the synth music she did before.

The "Fiender är Tråkigt" intro reminded me of Robyn's "Be Mine", by the way.

Yes. And if i wasn't clear enough, listen to Winona Oak and Chloe Lilac instead. Lana's album almost cured my insomnia.

I would have been kinda "meh, whatever" with Lana's album if only it didn't have Lana's name and image attached to the whole package as well.

Exactly. The thing got delayed for half a year and that's what she comes up with? And throwing f bombs everywhere doesn't make it any more interesting. Venice Bitch is over 9 minutes long but seems longer than a Tool song suite.

                      • I should point out that Jack Antonoff is largely responsible for Lana's album. So some people think he bored them last week. He bored me this week.

He better do some quirky bops with his own act, but I guess those don't bring any $$$ these days

                          • I think the Taylor Swift album is her best to date - that is how pop music should be. Quite liking Bats for Lashes "Desert Man" too.

This is the newly released acoustic version that has a video coming soon. It's the only version on the 5-track i really like as acoustic alternates are not my thing.

Bought CD. It's excellent if short - a common niggle of artists trying to recreate the eighties. They don't have to be that short in 2019! 5 more songs would be great. She describes So Good as her "Madonna song" and she's not wrong! It only needs an ill-fitting t-shirt and a headband in the video. Vampires is like dipping into Tangerine Dream's Near Dark soundtrack with gothic basslines. Safe Tonight is an MNEK collaboration and is slinky pop. The album might be her best ever if she kept the momentum up but it tapers off a bit on the last two tracks, though Mountains has grown on me since my first review posting. It's her best since Two Suns. Charles Scott IV is the main (co-)producer, he seems to specialise in soundtracks. 9/10 - album of the year so far.

23 NE Louis Tomlinson - Kill My Mind - on the one hand it's well produced, but on the other hand the lyrical component and the whole attitude still smells of Rixton, Lawson, McFly, Busted or Scouting For Girls.

You love Busted! There's nothing remotely deep about Liam Gallagher's Shockwave. SFG are wet blankets and nothing like a rock group. So are Lawson. In actual fact some of My Life Story's album is verging on SFG blandness.

It would have been more succint to say Tomlinson resembles indie era Robbie Williams. The attitude of his song is aggressive and arrogant - total Liam, total Robbie.

I do love Busted, but I acknowledge their fun & puppet-like nature.
With regards to Liam, I was not really going on about "Shockwave", but Liam's "One Of Us" and "Once" are at least half-heartfelt in context to his love/hate relationship (sibling rivalry) with Noel & Paul.
"Kill My Mind" is as rock as Mel C's "Yeh Yeh Yeh", not even close to Robbie's first few singles.

Yeh i overstepped a bit there. On listening again, it's no Lazy Days - or Mel C's Goin' Down. I mean it's just a pale imitation of Liam's attitude but the lyrics are not that bad. But no Liam G song has got me so far. I was baiting you and you caught the bait.

I actually wanted to chart "Kill My Mind" myself, but I still need to find a free slot for it in this mess of new entries I have
I am just in my Stephen A. Smith mode (that famous NBA pundit), which had this kinda exchange on live tv:

1 10 Charli XCX ft Sky Ferreira - Cross You Out
                                              YOUTUBE (6 weeks; PEAK)
From 36 hits, this is only Charli's 5th number one! Boom Clap, Need Ur Luv (a song that briefly looked like a single), Boys and the Vroom Vroom EP being the previous. (my other fave Marina has 10 #1s from 29 hits). Sky gets her 4th number one, adding to her own song called Boys , Heavy Metal Heart (a promised video that never happened) and the recent Downhill Lullaby. True to form, there are NO VIDEOS for any of Sky's chart-toppers. She hasn't done a proper video since the Primal Scream team-up in 2016.

Her 36th hit (and probable future number one) is this big pop ballad, written with the team she did Senorita with. A video has been filmed for it.

2 NE Charli XCX - Charli SPOTIFY
I got the CD. I wish they didn't hide her voice so much (Thoughts is the most guilty culprit). And the things i didn't like about Pop 2 are here - the sub-rap of Click is just another waste of Kim Petras' abilities, does Tommy Cash usually sound like a mental asylum escapee? The only "good" thing about Click is the humungous fart noise at the end. I don't get the logic of calling an album after yourself but smothering yourself in other people's sounds? Shake It is better than Click but may as well be a mixtape track from seven years ago, she has as much presence on it as Malcolm McLaren did back in the eighties. Dare i say it but she should have kept Sophie and had less AG Cook. The Vroom Vroom EP was exceptional. She should have the confidence to release a full solo record, not "me and my mates".

The things i love are Cross You Out (sounds immense on a proper stereo), Gone, Warm, White Mercedes (a mainstream pop song trying to pretend it isn't), Official which is lovely and bare (proof that you shouldn't hide her voice or make it sound "robotic" too often). I like Silver Cross but it seems a waste of potential. It has interesting lyrics but the melody and production let it down - it is literally rushing toward the end of the song like they can't wait to end it! A song with that weighty a title needed a weightier sound. Next Level Charli isn't really that but it's a good primer.

I Don't Wanna Know is also good - a power ballad pretending it isn't one, it's very Hannah Diamond. I'm still not sold on Blame as i find it pointless. February 2017 is weirdly abrupt like she felt it TOO personal and couldn't go any further but it's nice. 2099 is a very odd choice for a video - it doesn't really have a melody though the overall futuristic sound is good. 1999 sounds out of place on this album. And if that's here, why isn't Boys?

I don't think this is as great as Number 1 Angel or Sucker (both amazing albums/sets). Or Kim Petras' Clarity. 8/10.

                                              3 2 Taylor Swift - Lover (4 weeks; peak #1)

5 NE Le Cygne Noir - Shadow Of A Wrecking Ball SPOTIFY
Nobody seems to know (or they aren't telling) who this multi-talented Black Swan actually is but he knows Julianne from All About Eve, members of The Mission, the sons of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb, and photographer Rankin - all involved in this zombie apocalypse prog concept piece. The synth / rock flourishes work better than the piano ballad type stuff.

I like about 60% of Charli’s output, don’t think I’ll ever fully buy into her and prefer her poppier stuff (e.g. Superlove).
