week 23/2016 – 9 june 2016 Kill the competition with Kindness

• Singles Top40

Selena Gomez finally released the song “Kill Em With Kindness” as the fourth single of her latest album “Revival”, which immediately becomes her tenth number one single on my charts, and 17th entry overall. All of her songs made the Top10, with the promo single “Bang Bang Bang” from the 2011 album “When The Sun Goes Down” being her lowest peaking entry so far with a #5 peak. “Kill Em With Kindness” was already my personal favorite on “Revival” since she released the album last year, so a number one debut was a given. It will be interesting to see how it will do though, as there were already several cases where a personal fave was released pretty late in an era so it wasn’t really successful in the end because it already got played a lot before it got released. If it wouldn’t have been for Selena, the battle for the number one spot would have been between Kerli and Ariana Grande for the third week in a row. Kerli sits at #2 this week, giving “Blossom” another week in the Top2, while Ariana’s “Into You” dips 1-3 after just one week on the pole position.

Apart from “Kill Em With Kindness”, there are five more debuts on the Top40 this week and one re-entry. The second highest debut goes to Alan Walker, who already scored a top hit with his debut single “Faded” earlier this year. The follow-up is called “Sing Me To Sleep” and faces a stronger competition, but still makes a good debut at #5. Rachel Platten also makes a return to the charts with “Better Place”, which serves as the third single of her album “Wildfire”. After the #14 peaking “Fight Song” and the top hit “Stand By You”, “Better Place” makes a rather moderate debut at #14. Exactly one year after his first and only entry on the charts so far, Kygo also returns to the singles charts, as his single “Raging” featuring the irish band Kodaline debuts at #28. The last two entries come from Lost Frequencies with his new single “Beautiful Life” (#30) and Shawn Mendes, who debuts at #34 with “Treat You Better”. His hit “Stitches” became a huge hit everywhere over the past few months, but only peaked at #27 on my charts as it failed to make a bigger impact on me. Finally, the one re-entry belongs to Mark Forster, who is back at #25 with “Wir sind gross”, the lead single of his second album “Tape”, which was released last Friday and makes its entry on the album charts this week.

Nina Kraljic’s “Lighthouse” remains at number four for another week, being now one of only two entries in the Top10 from the ESC. The other one is “If Love Was A Crime” by Poli Genova, which falls 7-10 this week. P!nk’s “Just Like Fire” slips 5-6, followed by Céline Dion and Lindsey Stirling who are down 3-7 with “The Show Must Go On”. Tarja is back in the Top10 as “No Bitter End” ascends 15-8 as her current album “The Brightest Void” is currently on heavy rotation. Meghan Trainor makes the Top10 complete, as she returns to that territory as well with “Me Too” climbing 11-9.

Dami Im’s “Sound Of Silence” (8-11), “This One’s For You” by David Guetta & Zara Larsson (9-12), Adele’s “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” (6-13) and Jamala’s ESC winning track “1944” (10-19) all leave the Top10 this week. Meanwhile, OneRepublic keep on climbing with their latest single “Wherever I Go”, up 20-15 this week. With another four tracks leaving the charts, Adele’s concert effect is nearly completely over. Apart from the current single “Send My Love”, “Hello” is her only other charting track, dropping 17-21. And with "Someone Like You" falling out of the charts as well, Zara Larsson's and MNEK's "Never Forget You" is now the longest charting single on the charts right now, with an incredible 30 weeks, dipping 23-26 this week. There’s one last thing worth a mention, and it’s actually not a good thing. After the two Gold certified hits “Flesh Without Blood” and “Kill V. Maim”, “California”, the third single from Grimes’ hit album “Art Angels”, seems to become quite a big underperformance for her, as it’s already tumbling down 24-39 in its third week now.

Tarja’s “No Bitter End” is the biggest climber for a second week in a row, while Grimes’ “California” is the biggest loser this week.

• Album Top20

Tarja defends the top spot this week, giving “The Brightest Void” a second week at number one. It’s only her fourth release with multiple weeks on top now, as the other four chart toppers only spent one week at number one, while the other three with multiple weeks all spent three weeks there. Ariana Grande sits another week at number two with “Dangerous Woman”, while Selena Gomez rounds up the Top3 as “Revival” benefits a lot from its new single “Kill Em With Kindness” and rises back into the Top3 for the first time this year (7-3).

There are two new entries this week, but both weren’t strong enough for a Top3 debut, and both artists never made it onto my album charts so far. German singer Mark Forster has released his second album “Tape”, and debuts at #4 with it, while argentinian TV starlet Martina Stoessel debuts at #6 with her debut album “Tini”. In between those new entries there’s the Eurovision Song Contest compilation, which slips 4-5. Birdy’s “Beautiful Lies” dips 5-7, followed by the ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ soundtrack, which is down 3-8. Fifth Harmony’s “7/27” (6-9) and Jamie-Lee’s “Berlin” (8-10) fill out the Top10.

There are a few interesting moves in the lower half of the album charts. Gwen Stefani climbs back 15-11 with “This Is What The Truth Feels Like”. The singer released the video of the third single “Misery” last week, which had no effect on the single though, but the song already reached the Top10 on the singles charts when it was released as a promo single earlier this year. Kygo gains some positions as well, as his debut “Cloud Nine” is up 14-12, which is even a new peak for the norwegian DJ. Adele’s “25” is already down 10-19 this week, dropping surprisingly fast now despite having a current hit single. It’s also her only charting album now, as her previous album “21” leaves the charts this week.

I've seen you haven't quoted Kaliopi in your comment in my thread, so I guess it's not your favourite ESC song ;) Actually not surprising, I think that if someone's not into Balkans, often has a hard time with all of these Balkan sounds.
Tarja seems to be quite successful on your chart. On mine just narrowly missed top 50 and I don't know what will happen soon, but somehow I've prefered "Victim Of Ritual" Not mentioning "Once" era with Nightwish...

Oh how come you think so? "Work From Home" was actually pretty big... its chartrun is: 4-*3*-4-6-12-15-18-18-23-29-Out so it spent 10 weeks on the charts earlier this year and got certified with Gold. I only listed the "Reflection" singles above as i wanted to post the things from their first era, while the new album "7/27" wasn't able to let "Work From Home" re-enter the charts. And i actually think "Work From Home" is one of the best songs of the year so far

Yes finally! I think it's a cute song, and i just watched the video for the first time a few days ago and i love it, but the album has so many (much) better tracks. I'm not surprised it didn't do well for her. Let's hope we get another single, and another hit

Interesting question! I think she would have debuted at #1 back when the album came out and would have spent like 2-3 weeks there, plus it would have stayed on the charts for several months for sure, as i've been playing it every now and then.

Agree! Glad he came back with a good song, i was afraid he would end up as another random dj/producer with only one good (debut) hit and nothing more. I hope "Sing Me To Sleep" will be a moderate hit at least, but it obviously won't be as big as "Faded". But i can see this being a Top10 hit in most european markets for sure. Agree about Solein, i still need to check out her solo stuff...

Oh no problem.
She was really good to be honest. And i respect her, her talent and her stuff. But i'll probably never become a really big fan of hers.
Kaliopi was not bad at all, but also far away from one of my faves. It was solid. I thought her first ESC entry from a few years ago was better to be honest. And it's not even that 'Balkan', is it?
Yes, i really love Tarja. Nightwish became the first thing in music that i got obsessed with back in 2004, and she was still the singer there back at that time. "Victim Of Ritual" is definitely one of her best ones so far, much, much better than the current one. Same with the "Once" era - glad to hear you liked it!

I think i already mentioned it in your topic, but unfortunately i'm usually not into (swiss)german music, so it's not easy to recommend something from there, as you probably know even more than i do, or at least you have way more on your charts in (swiss)german than i do.

Yet another killer chart, Tansike!

Yes, she's one of the biggest artists on my charts. I've always been a huge fan of hers. Yeah, #5 is the peak of her lowest peaking song. "Hit The Lights" peaked at #3 (but showed good longevity), while all other entries even made the Top2. Going by points, "I Want You To Know" by Zedd is her least successful song though, despite a #2 peak. And yes, HTM is my least-favorite single of her current album, and it 'only' made it to #2. It's currently not certified, being the only proper single of hers with no certification so far... But it only needs a VERY few points to get one, so it's likely to get certified if it climbs back, and the chances are quite big for a re-entry this autumn as she's visiting Switzerland for the first time ever and i'm going to see her <3 and as you've seen with Adele, concert effects can be big

Glad you like these rebounds. My interest in "Me Too" is holding on surprisingly long, especially compared to "No"...

Good #1 this (last) week! While it wasn't one of the songs on the album that charted on my chart at the time it's still a good song and I like it.

I actually wanted to listen to Revival in full when out walking yesterday (Tuesday), but unfortunately it turned out I had deleted it (along with almost every other album from 2015) from my iPod so it didn't happen. Hopefully writing this comment will make me remember to re-add it until next time! Great to see that it continues to climb.

I also like the other new entry in the top 10, "Sing Me to Sleep". It's not quite as good as "Faded" and it feels like the competition is stronger now so it may struggle a bit to reach my chart though. The weakest part is the instrumental chorus.

Just checked out "Raging" and it's not terrible but not sure I like it. I liked "Firestone" but everything else I've heard by Kygo has tended so sound like weaker copies of that. Interesting that his album has the same title as a great Disney TV movie with Dove Cameron in the lead .

I agree when it comes to "Sing Me To Sleep" being not as strong as "Faded". But it's a good follow-up, didn't expect Alan Walker to release another good song. Ha yes, you mean the breakdown, right? That's also the weakest part for me... Iselin's voice is just heavenly so i could live without that instrumental part.

Kygo's debut album is better than expected, had no idea Dove made a movie with the same title though "Raging" is definitely one of my faves on the album, together with "Stole The Show" (you didn't like that one?) and "Oasis" which features Foxes - hopefully the next single. Somehow i never really got that much into "Firestone".

I'm surprised as well. It's a VERY good sign if a song from the ESC is holding on so well even weeks after the contest, as it's the same with me like it is with you; only songs that are really good keep on being successful, while most other entries start to fall quite fast. That's also what happened with some entries this year, however this year there are more entries that holding on very well compared to all previous years.

Martina's album is better than expected. I think you'll be surprised about its second week. "Revival" going back to #1 isn't an option yet...

week 24/2016 – 16 june 2016 Aura’s comeback

• Singles Top40

It’s a good week for Kerli, a very good one. “Blossom” may slip 2-3 in its seventh week and “Feral Hearts” isn’t moving a single position (16-16), but both earn a new certification. “Blossom” gets certified with Gold, making it her tenth single with a certification. Even more impressive is the certification for “Feral Hearts” though, as that song gets certified with Platinum. It’s her fifth song with a platinum certification or more so far, and even more notable it’s the first song that was released in 2016 which gets certified with Platinum. “Blossom” also became my second most played song of the year so far, making Kerli the owner of the two most played songs of the year so far. But even she can’t change the fact that Selena Gomez gets a second week on top with “Kill Em With Kindness”.

The highest debut of the week is a long anticipated comeback. After way too many years, Danish pop sensation Aura (Dione) finally released a new single last friday called “Love Somebody”. She scored several big hits with her first two albums “Columbine” and “Before The Dinosaurs” back in 2010 – 2012, including three #1s in a row with “Geronimo” (2011), “Friends” (2012) and “In Love With The World” (2012). She ditched ‘Dione’ for her comeback so the entry is only under ‘Aura’. “Love Somebody” debuts at #2, being her sixth Top2 hit of seven entries in total. There are even another two entries in the Top10. Australian twins The Veronicas are back on the charts with “In My Blood”, their newest single. They scored a minor hit with the #17-peaking “You Ruin Me” back in 2014, so the entry at #7 for their new song is immediately their highest peaking entry so far. Also back on the charts are The Chainsmokers. “Roses” wasn’t a big hit for them, but at least made it onto the charts earlier this year at #38. The follow-up called “Don’t Let Me Down” makes a much bigger impact by debuting at #10 and also becomes the first entry for newcomer Daya, who already scored a little hit in several countries with her song “Hide Away”.

There are even two more new entries and one re-entry a bit lower down the charts. “Lean On” by Major Lazer was undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of 2015, and Danish singer MØ was responsible for the vocals on that song. Shortly after “Lean On”, she was able to get an entry on her own as the song “Kamikaze” debuted and peaked at #16 last autumn. Now she’s back again with another Top20 hit, as “Final Song” debuts at #19. The final entry belongs to Justin Bieber. After the three Top10 hits “What Do You Mean?” (#8), “Sorry” (#1) and “Love Yourself” (#9) he makes a rather weak debut at #34 with the fourth “Purpose”-single “Company”. The song was already announced as a single several weeks ago, but he only released its video now. If this remains its peak, it will be his lowest peaking entry ever. The mentioned re-entry belongs to Tom Odell, who is back at #37 with “Wrong Crowd” due to the release of his second album with the same name.

Ariana Grande’s “Into You” (3-4) and Nina Kraljic’s “Lighthouse” (4-5) both only dip one position each, with the latter being certified with Gold this week. It’s the third song from this years ESC with a certification, following Jamie-Lee’s “Ghost” and Sergey Lazarev’s “You Are The Only One”, making 2016 only the third year so far with three certified ESC songs after 2013 (Cascada, Emmelie De Forest, Margaret Berger) and 2014 (Emmelie De Forest’s theme song, Conchita Wurst, Sanna Nielsen). But the chances for 2016 to become the first year with more than three certified entries is actually quite big at this stage, as other entries like “Sound Of Silence” by Dami Im (11-13) and “If Love Was A Crime” by Poli Genova (10-14) are still doing very well as well. P!nk is static as #6 with Just Like Fire, while Alan Walker’s “Sing Me To Sleep” is already down 5-9. The Top10 gets complete with “This One’s For You”, which reaches a new peak for David Guetta and Zara Larsson by climbing 12-8.

OneRepublic are about to add another Top10 hit to their discography, as “Wherever I Go” keeps on climbing, up 15-11 this week. Shawn Mendes also reaches a new peak, increasing 34-29 with his new single “Treat You Better”. The last thing worth a mention is something about Birdy’s “Wild Horses”, which is down 32-38 this week. The song is charting for its eleventh week, making it her longest charting single since her debut “People Help The People” made it to 21 weeks back in 2013. This is quite impressive, as it’s also her lowest peaking single to date with its #17 peak.

Rykka’s “The Last Of Our Kind” keeps on having a weird chartrun, and climbs 31-24 as the biggest climber, while Adele’s “Hello” tumbles down 21-36 as the biggest loser this week.

• Album Top20

Another two new entries arrive on the charts this week, but both are not strong enough to change something at the top of the charts for another week. So Tarja gets a third week at #1 with “The Brightest Void”, being now her third album in a row with three weeks on top of the charts, as the live album “Luna Park Ride” did it nearly exactly a year ago, while the Christmas album “Ave Maria – En plein air” did one week in its debut week last autumn and for another two weeks during Christmas season. Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” sits at #2 for a third week, while Selena Gomez’ “Revival” remains at #3 after its increase a week ago.

As mentioned, there are two debuts, and both are just outside the Top3. Nick Jonas released his new album “Last Year Was Complicated”, which debuts at #4 and outpeaks his previous self-titled release, which peaked at #8. It will be interesting to see if “Last Year Was Complicated” will be able to show the same success as “Nick Jonas” though, as that one showed amazing longevity and spent incredible 19 weeks on the charts despite the low peak. The second debut belongs to british singer-songwriter Tom Odell and his second album “Wrong Crowd”, which becomes his first entry on my album charts at a good #5. Martina Stoessel gets a good second week by remaining at #6 with “Tini”, followed by the Eurovision Song Contest compilation (5-7). Fifth Harmony’s “7/27” recovers a little bit by going up 9-8 while Mark Forster’s “Tape” (4-9) and Birdy’s “Beautiful Lies” (7-10) are filling out the Top10.

Jamie-Lee’s debut album “Berlin” leaves the Top10 after a good run of six weeks (10-12). It gets certified with Gold this week, giving her already her second Gold certification in her career as the single “Ghost” got certified as well. Other than that, the lower half of the Top20 is surprisingly stable for another week. Artists like Kygo, Mike Posner, Zoë and Drake keep on being stable in the lower part of the charts. There’s one re-entry at the end of the album charts though, as Inna’s self-titled album returns at #20.

On the video thing - I'm pretty much the same. Well, I often check out the video premieres of my hardcore faves, but I rarely re-watch them, and it sometimes takes me ages to watch other highly anticipated videos, OR I simply scroll through them quickly I'm just so lazy and impatient! But I also have to say that music videos are often a non-event in previous years, whereas 2008 - 2011 was an amazing time for new videos, especially those by Lady Gaga.

Amazing entry for Aura! For me, it's not as instant as Geronimo, but I kinda feel like it'll be a strong grower (like 365, for me).

I liked both of her albums, but both were also not that strong after all, especially apart from the singles. Glad you liked them though, and there's just something about her that's very likeable.

On the video thing - I'm pretty much the same. Well, I often check out the video premieres of my hardcore faves, but I rarely re-watch them, and it sometimes takes me ages to watch other highly anticipated videos, OR I simply scroll through them quickly I'm just so lazy and impatient! But I also have to say that music videos are often a non-event in previous years, whereas 2008 - 2011 was an amazing time for new videos, especially those by Lady Gaga.

Amazing entry for Aura! For me, it's not as instant as Geronimo, but I kinda feel like it'll be a strong grower (like 365, for me).

WOW, finally The Chainsmokers enter It's such an amazing bop! And I hope we also get more stuff of Daya. Don't Let Me Down is easily among my faves of this year so far! I just dislike the fact that German radio is playing it on a daily basis while I'm already over it, I always fear that makes me dislike a song

As for "Don't Let Me Down", #10 will most likely not be its peak

• Delightful to see "In My Blood" debut inside your Top 10! "You Ruin Me" only made No. 17, though? I really love that one - I'd rank it up there with "Untouched."
• Ah, you mentioned that you'd been loving "Don't Let Me Down" lately, and here's the proof! When I first heard it, I thought I'd end up loving it way more than "Roses", but it wore off me surprisingly fast. I still like it, I just never got AS into it as I initially expected. I guess I prefer Daya on her own, whereas you prefer her as a guest.
• Random, but still nice, to see "Company" finally make an appearance! I'm still surprised (and saddened) but how badly it flopped in the US, following three No. 1 hits!
