    week 24/2017 – 15 june 2017 Katy Perry Vs. Halsey & Lena

    • Singles Top40

Lena gets a second week on top of the Singles Top40 with her ballad “If I Wasn’t Your Daughter”, making it the first time after six week that there’s no change on top of the charts. Katy Perry also remains on the same position, as “Swish Swish” stays at number two despite getting a push through the album release. The highest new entry of the week closes the Top3, and that’s “Inspired”, a new track by Miley Cyrus. While its debut at #3 may be great, it’s currently her lowest peaking single now, and only her second to miss the top spot, following its previous release “Malibu” which goes down 7-9 in its fifth week.

There aren’t that many new entries this week, in fact there are just two of them, with another five re-entries being on the charts as well. The second new arrival is “2U”, the new single by David Guetta, which features Justin Bieber. The track debuts at #18 as yet another Top20 hit for both artists. The highest re-entry is “Stay” by Zedd and Alessia Cara, as the track makes a surprisingly high comeback at #20. Charlie Puth’s “Attention” gets a new peak as well by returning to #27, Katy Perry’s “Chained To The Rhythm” is back at #36 due to the album release, Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder” re-enters the charts at #38 while Lena’s “Lost In You” benefits a little bit from her new single and just made it back onto the charts at #40.

As expected, Lindsey Stirling’s “Lost Girls” shows great longevity so far, staying at #4 for a fifth week in the Top5. She’s followed by Marina Kaye’s “On My Own”, which re-peaks (6-5), and “OK” by Robin Schulz and James Blunt, which gets a new peak this week (8-6). Ariana’s “One Last Time” drops 3-7, Helene Fischer’s “Herzbeben” is down 5-8 while Rita Ora makes the Top10 complete as her “Your Song” is up one spot compared to a week ago (11-10).

Katy Perry has the obvious biggest debut on the album charts this time, as she finally released her long awaited new album “Witness”. The lead single “Chained To The Rhythm” was already a hit, and she’s currently having another one with “Swish Swish”, but she also owns a third entry, and that’s “Bon Appétit”, which climbs a lot this week (21-11). Just behind her are three tracks worth a mention, and that are “Crying In The Club” by Camila Cabello (12-12), “Cut To The Feeling” by Carly Rae Jepsen (14-13) and “Down” by Fifth Harmony (13-14). The special thing about these songs is that most tracks that debut outside the Top10 either rise a lot in the following weeks or drop a lot, but it’s very rare to see three of them being so stable just outside the Top10 for two to three weeks, and it’s likely to see them all hanging around for a little bit longer. Halsey’s “Now Or Never” (9-15) and Ariana Grande’s “Into You” (10-19) leave the Top10 after a short visit back there. Meanwhile, with “City Lights” by Blanche (16-21), “Fly With Me” by Artsvik (17-24) and “Requiem” by Alma (19-26) all leaving the Top20, there’s already no entry coming from the ESC in the upper half of the charts.

Katy Perry’s “Bon Appétit” is the biggest climber while “Hey Mamma” by Sunstroke Project is the biggest loser this week (27-39).

It should have been Katy’s week, but Halsey does the unexpected and defends the top spot with her “hopeless fountain kingdom”, giving her a second week at number one. As if this wouldn’t be exciting enough for the singer, her debut “Badlands” also returns to the charts at #18 this week, proving that she’s finally arrived as a successful singer now.

Back to Katy Perry. The singer finally released “Witness”, her fourth studio album following “One Of The Boys”, “Teenage Dream” and “Prism”. The first one was released during a time when I didn’t do an album charts, and therefor it never made it onto my charts. The second one however is currently one of the most successful releases ever, having spent eight weeks at number one, 68 weeks on the charts in total and being certified with 4x Platinum, with its re-release being certified with Gold as well. Meanwhile, “Prism” only went Platinum, but still made it to number one on the weekly charts, which gets denied for “Witness”, as the set debuts at number two this week. Since all three singles are currently charting and two of them being quite high, it’s expected to see the album having some longevity though.

It’s a busy week overall as there are another three debuts, all of them being in the Top10. Swiss band Pegasus are new at #5 with “Beautiful Life”, which already spawned the number one hit “Fragments” earlier this year. Meanwhile, both, Lady Antebellum and London Grammar make their very first notations ever on the album charts, as “Heart Break” is new at #7 for the first while “Truth Is A Beautiful Thing” enters the charts at #8 for the latter. The rest of the Top10: Linkin Park’s “One More Light” stays at #3, Aura’s “Can’t Steal The Music” slips 2-4, Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut album is down 4-6, Shakira’s “El Dorado” descends 6-9 followed by Helene Fischer’s self-titled album (5-10).

Lindsey Stirling’s “Brave Enough” leaves the upper half again (7-11), though it gets certified with 3x Platinum this week, being already her third album to do so – out of three studio albums she’s released so far! Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” (8-12), Alma’s “Ma peau aime” (10-14) and Jasmine Thompson’s “Wonderland” EP (9-17) also leave the Top10, with the latter having quite a bad drop. Last but not least, Lena’s “Crystal Sky” benefits from her new single and returns to #16.

            week 25/2017 – 22 june 2017 If I Wasn’t Your Bad Liar

            • Singles Top40

This week shows what a good music video can do, it can push a song which showed a very disappointing chart performance so far back up the charts and make a hit out of it, and the lucky track is “Bad Liar” by Selena Gomez. While the song debuted at #3 four weeks ago, which would be a nice debut for every artist out there, it still was an underwhelming debut for Selena herself as all of her other proper singles except “Hit The Lights” made the Top2, with most of them even making it to the top for multiple weeks. The song quickly fell down the charts and it looked like it would be her worst performing single ever, though the just released music video now makes the song jumping 16-2 and reaching a new peak.

Who blocked her? It’s still Lena who is on top of the charts, as “If I Wasn’t Your Daughter” spends a third week at number one. It’s now her longest running number one single ever, and the second of the year with more than just two weeks, following Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson’s “Symphony”, which spent four weeks on the top. Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish” dips 2-3, closing the Top3.

There are six debuts and three re-entries in the Top40 this week, with two of the new arrivals being in the Top10. The highest one belongs to the late Christina Grimmie, who arrives at #5 with “Sublime”, a single from her newly released album “All Is Vanity”. The other Top10 debut is “Instruction”, a collaboration between Jax Jones, Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don. While this is the very first entry ever for Jax Jones and Stefflon Don, Demi Lovato is not unknown to my charts and already scores her 15th appearance with that track. Country-pop legend Shania Twain finally returns to the music scene, as she is set to release her album “Now” later this year as the follow-up to “Up”, which was released an incredible 15 years ago. Due to that break, the lead track “Life’s About To Get Good” becomes her first entry ever on my charts by debuting at #13. The All-Star collaboration Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean are new at #24 with “Feels”, Macklemore’s new song “Glorious” featuring Skylar Grey enters the charts at #26, while Owl City has the final arrival as his new song “Not All Heroes Wear Capes” made it to #39.

As mentioned, there are also three re-entries, with all of them being back on the charts due to album releases. Lorde has the highest of these re-entries, as her “Green Lights” is back at #22 due to the release of her sophomore album “Melodrama”. “All Is Vanity” brings “Invisible” back to the charts for Christina Grimmie (#33), while “Fake Sugar” brings “Fire” back to the charts for Beth Ditto (#36).

The rest of the Top10: Lindsey Stirling’s “Lost Girls” stays at #4, Katy Perry improves 11-6 with “Bon Appétit”, Marina Kaye’s “On My Own” is down 5-8, followed by Robin Schulz and James Blunt’s “OK” (6-9), while Rita Ora closes the Top10 once again with “Your Song” (10-10).

Halsey rises back up 15-11 with “Now Or Never”, which earns her the very first certification ever by going Gold this week. A second certification goes out to Blanche, as her “City Lights” becomes the first ESC entry from this year with a certification, despite already falling down 21-28. Most other ESC entries are even lower or already left the charts completely. So while it was the contest with most charts entries ever, it’s safe to say that this years entries won’t be as successful as last years, as there were four certified songs from the 2016 contest, three of them being even certified with Platinum. Back to the upper half… Zedd and Alessia Cara rise 20-12 with “Stay” following their surprising re-entry a week ago. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus’ “Malibu” (9-14) & “Inspired” (3-18), Helene Fischer’s “Herzbeben” (8-16) and Ariana Grande’s “One Last Time” (7-19) all have to leave the Top10. “Inspired” seems to become for Miley what “Bad Liar” looked to be for Selena – their first flops – but maybe there’ll be an awesome video for Miley’s track too which may revive the song. As for now, it’s not only her lowest peaking entry ever, but most likely will become her least successful song by far as well. There’s one last thing worth a mention, and that’s something about a song which leaves the Top40: “Spirit Animal” by Kerli. The song leaves the charts for the first time after exactly a half year, so 26 weeks, which is quite rare these days. The song is currently very high on the year-to-date charts and it’s expected to get new music by the Estonian charts empress in the second half of the year.

Selena Gomez’ “Bad Liar” is the biggest climber while Miley Cyrus’ “Inspired” and Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan’s “There For You” (23-38) are both the biggest losers this week.

            • Album Top20

”All Is Vanity” debuts at number one as the first full-length album being released posthumously by singer Christina Grimmie following her tragic death a year ago. It’s already her fifth charts appearance on the album charts in total. Her “Side A” EP made the start a year ago, as her biggest success so far as it’s certified with Platinum (back at #18 on this weeks chart). It was followed by her debut album “With Love” (#4, certified with Gold) and her debut EP “Find Me” (#7, Gold), both originally released a few years ago, while the “Side B” EP (#1, Gold) became her fourth entry a few weeks ago. She’s one of the very rare cases where an artist has more entries on the album charts than on the singles charts, as she has made three entries on the Singles Top40 so far.

Halsey dips 1-2 with “hopeless fountain kingdom”, which is already the fourth most played album of 2017 with over 700 plays, followed by Katy Perry’s “Witness” (2-3). Apart from the new top album, there are another two arrivals in the Top20 this week, and they both are back to back at #4 and #5. Lorde finally returns with her second album after nearly four years, and it’s called “Melodrama”, which debuts at #4. Despite the singles “Green Light” and “Perfect Places” being no hits so far, the set has a better debut than her first album “Pure Heroine” which debuted and peaked at #7. Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto owns the other arrival, as her first solo album “Fake Sugar” enters the charts at #5. The rest of the Top10: Linkin Park’s “One More Light” falls 3-6, Aura’s “Can’t Steal The Music” drops 4-7, Lindsey Stirling’s “Brave Enough” rebounds 11-8, Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut album is down 6-9 followed by Lady Antebellum’s “Heart Break” (7-10).

Pegasus’ “Beautiful Life” (5-11) and London Grammar’s “Truth Is A Beautiful Thing” (8-12) already leave the upper half after their entry there a week ago. Shakira’s “El Dorado” leaves the Top10 as well, as it’s down 9-15, followed by Helene Fischer’s self-titled album (10-16).

                • I hope that picture isn't from the video; she seriously looks like eleven years old in it! Will check out the video later although I doubt it will do much to save the song for me. Anyway, I like the climb if only because it seems to make it more unlikely that Katy will climb to #1! And of course great that the #1 didn't change this week!

It's been a while since I quoted all of the songs I like but as I'm typing this on a tablet it will have to wait a while longer!

Great to see the success for Christina! I must listen to the entire album again with better concentration because I'm not sure yet what my favourite songs on it are.

Edit: I watched the video now and although that picture is from the video and I still think she looks much younger than her actual age in it, the video was quite funny and well done. This comment stolen from YouTube sums up the story really well:

How dare Selena cheat on Selena with Selena because Selena likes Selena but so does Selena!?

"Inspired" is cute and all but it doesn't work as a single for me :(

Glad you like Owl City's new track. Unfortunately i would call it one of his weaker songs to date. Still hoping for a new album soon though.

…so since you’ve watched the video, it probably made a bit sense why she looks that young on that picture – because she’s also ‚young‘ in the video. Anyways, she looks much younger than she is for sure… I watched a video of her music evolution a few days ago and she’s in the business for nearly ten years, which makes it kinda weird that she still looks so young.
Oh so you don’t like “Swish Swish”/Katy?

That’s okay, and I feel you, as I’ve been in a similar situation lately. But thank god I have access to a computer at work, so I can do the ‘big stuff’ there…

Glad you like Christina’s success! “All Is Vanity” is a pretty good album, a shame she’s not successful outside of our personal charts :(

And yes, that comment sums up the video perfectly

Well, it's definitely the best video of the year so far. So fun and weird, i love it

I know, but somehow the song doesn't do much for me. I'm also starting to get over "Malibu"... :(

"Green Light" keeps on growing on me so it's likely to see it climbing up the charts this week. Oh good question. Probably a 7.5 so far. It's very good and definitely better than her debut, but i still wouldn't call myself a very big fan of her stuff. How would you rate it?

I hope it does, it's quite cool (plus the new video they just released for "Feels" is cool too)

How would a perfect date look for you?
Aww Congrats! That does sound TRULY delightful. Excellent movie choice too, since Chris Pratt is guaranteed to set the right mood... ;) Have you seen this guy since that night? Hopefully he knows what a good thing he's got going!

Hmmm. It's a pretty obvious/cliché response, but if the connection with the guy is right, the activity itself doesn't matter quite as much (as long as it's not some adrenaline-junkie thing that I'd completely hate, like sky diving or roller coasters) Going on dates in San Francisco back in college was pretty fun, since there's so many gorgeous (and private-ish) spots to take somebody special (in parks, by the water, etc.)

SO exciting - and much respect for the courage to tackle all this on your own after having someone else to rely on for so long. I've definitely come to depend on Ian for some things over the years, so I'd totally stumble/struggle if I had to suddenly become a truly independent adult.

Have you moved by now? If so: is the new place feeling like home yet? Has the guy you mentioned above been over yet...?

Haha… now I really like these thoughts, as I had the EXACTLY same thoughts just yesterday But I like that it’s longer than usual, as it’s a great rap.
I'm on board with all of the tracks you mentioned there! Katy had the somewhat unfortunate timing of dropping her album right before Terror Jr dropped theirs (and I've really been getting into them this year), so they pretty much completely eclipsed her last week, but I've started paying more attention to Witness again lately. The messages are interesting, and there's definitely moments that get stuck in your head...but overall, it'll almost certainly go down as my least favorite album of hers (well, not counting the Katy Hudson one, obv.)

Ha. Total macho man, eh, Tansike? ;) Though, if I remember correctly, we've discussed a goth-ish phase of yours before (not that that's necessarily feminine, just not rigidly masculine either - at least not in the obnoxious American bro sense.)

I hear you, though. Ideally, everyone in the LGBTQ community (well, everyone in general, really) should feel comfortable/safe being whoever they are, and I do think we're only hurting ourselves as a community when we sh*t on guys who are more flamboyant/expressive/etc. (which I've definitely done myself in the past) Especially now, we need to be banding together more than tearing each other apart. That said, I'm also typically more sexually attracted to guys who lean toward...shall we say..."traditionally masculine" presentation. Of course, I wouldn't want them to be SO butch that they couldn't stand all the female popstars I adore ;) I like talking/thinking about gender and sexuality, but it can be a struggle to compose clear, coherent thoughts about it all. It's complex...but so are people, I guess.

ANY rate - I need to hear all the details from your Lady Gaga sexxx dreams ASAP!

                        • So I went hunting for "If I Wasn't Your Daughter" again after seeing it atop Jake's chart and managed to give it a listen. It's really lovely, and brings to mind Kelly's "Piece By Piece."
Woah! "Bad Liar"s video to the rescue! I'm really pleased to see it have such a massive effect here (it definitely re-kindled my interest in the song too, which had started to fade pretty drastically.) I just hope it doesn't wear off too quickly...
                        • I'm loving this strong second wind for "Stay" too! The video's been out for a while now (I think?), so what gets the credit for this particular revival?
                        • DEEPLY embarrassing, but I had NO idea that "Crying In The Club" sampled "Genie In A Bottle" until a friend mentioned it (and I'd heard the song several times, in full, before that.)
                        • "Inspired" hasn't inspired me quite as much as "Malibu", but it's sweet that she put out a special single for Pride. I love the way she sings that "and all the haAaAate..." line toward the end of the song. Reminds me of Cher.

Yet another chart that I love as if it were my child, Tansike!

                        • Hi Tansike

                          1 (1) Lena – If I Wasn’t Your Daughter

What a beautiful song and fellow chart topper in my chart too. <3 I'd like to see Lena venture further down this route. The pop bangers are good but this is gorgeous.

                          2 (16) Selena Gomez – Bad Liar

Gosh! Mind you, i know how much of a Selena Gomez fan you are so maybe i should be more surprised it couldn't make #1. I'm still not overly sold on the song. I like it but it doesn't really grab me in the same way Hands to myself did.

3 (2) Katy Perry feat. Nicki Minaj – Swish Swish

I'm so fickle with Swish swish. I like the song but if i give it too many plays i find myself getting bored listening to the song.

7 (NEW) Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don – Instruction

Amazing to see Instruction enter so high as i don't think You don't know me was that successful in your chart. The power of Demi Lovato.

13 (NEW) Shania Twain – Life’s About To Get Good

Also entered my chart last week at #16, its a real joy to listen to this song. My personal favourite Shania Twain song is That don't impress me much i bought that song on cd when i was young. <--- no shame whatsoever, its amazing.

24 (NEW) Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean – Feels

Feels is by far my favourite track that Calvin Harris has released so far. I also love that he's released a music video for the song too, so hopefully it will become a big chart hit in the coming weeks. Entered my chart at #3 last week.

26 (NEW) Macklemore feat. Skylar Grey – Glorious

I feel like Macklemore has lost his way slightly. Perhaps its the lack of Ryan Lewis as i really liked their singles Thrift shop, Can't hold us, Same love and Downtown. Glorious is good but not up to the same standard as those earlier songs imo.

Thank you. It really was such a magical evening, as cheesy as it may sound like now. It will be very difficult to top this and it was the moment we both started to feel more for each other. Ha, true about Chris, he’s definitely an eye-candy and we both already liked him prior that movie No, it wasn’t the first time we saw each other. We already started to meet each other about a month prior that date, though it wasn’t really dating before that one evening. Haha sweet of you, thank you. I hope so too!

Ohhhh yeah these things would be a no-go for me as well. But yeah there’s something about that, it doesn’t matter what one is doing as long as it’s the right guy. Sounds really good! Unfortunately I’m really bad at finding good places so I’m lucky to have met someone who knows all the good stuff...

Have you moved by now? If so: is the new place feeling like home yet? Has the guy you mentioned above been over yet...?
Well, I have no other choice except living alone But I hope it will be a good thing. So far it’s boring, but more because my TV and internet aren’t working (and they still won’t work until next tuesday ). There were also several things where I had (or still have) no idea how to do it, or I have no idea what I have to do… but there’s always the chance to ask someone.

Yes, I moved a few days ago. And no, not at all. I wish I could sleep at my new partner’s place like every day though that’s really difficult as he’s not living alone, so I can barely sleep there. And no, he wasn’t here yet. I hope he comes over one day, though I get when he doesn’t (but that’s another long story… )

The messages are interesting, and there's definitely moments that get stuck in your head...but overall, it'll almost certainly go down as my least favorite album of hers (well, not counting the Katy Hudson one, obv.)
Oh really? So even “Pendulum”? That one seems to be one of the least faves among fans, at least from what I’ve read. Many have this as their least favorite on the whole album. Glad to hear you still had the chance to get a bit into “Witness”… I’m not sure yet how to rank it compared to her previous releases. I never got into “Prism” as much as I was hoping for, so “Witness” may end up above “Prism” and below “Teenage Dream” (while I NEVER listened to OOTB… )

Ah no I still wouldn’t call myself a macho, not at all actually Oh you’re good! Yes, I had a goth-ish phase, though never really when it comes to my look, as during that phase I was still in an age where my mom bought all clothes (and I got no pocket money, so I was never able to buy some ‘black’ clothes for me, otherwise I would have done it…)

Well I get what you mean, but as harsh as it may sound like, I’m gay because I like men, and not because I like men who act feminine. It also happened that I already rolled my eyes at guys which are really feminine (for example with a pink handbag and stuff like this). I also like to talk about these things though as you say it's complex, and it's even more difficult to express my feelings about these things in english. It already happened that i picked the wrong words and people misunderstood me...

I just found her VERY sexy back then (especially in the “LoveGame” vid…) so yeah…

Glad you found a way to listen to “If I Wasn’t Your Daughter”. And wow, I didn’t even think of this yet, but yeah, it really is like a sister to “Piece By Piece”… another ballad about the father/daughter relationship.

Definitely my video of the year so far! I knew you would like that climb for the track, though I’m not sure how good it will hold on over the next weeks. This week it’ll remain in the Top10 (sorry for that spoiler ) but I’m already starting to skip it again so I’m not sure about afterwards…

Good question! You know, my new partner (bf sounds a bit weird which is why I’m calling him my ‘new partner’ – and somehow it feels too early to already call him just ‘partner’ ) is a singer, and he’s also in an acapella band (Pentatonix style), and they did a cover of “Stay” which got released on the 1st may, and he used to practice it all the time in my car, which is why the song was stuck in my head all the time. I still didn’t give the original a chance until just a few weeks ago, as it kept on being stuck in my head… (and this also kinda explains Pentatonix’ longevity on my album charts, as he loves them and sometimes plays that EP as well).

Don’t worry, it took me some time to hear the sample as well…

That part is really good, yeah. Other than that, I’m quite disappointed and I hope the next track will be better again. Miley is already the third artist from my big faves to underperform this year (Miley, Selena and Lana Del Rey being the third) …
Didn’t Cher do a cover of Miley a very few years back? One of the HM soundtrack songs, I think it was a country ballad as well or so, so that comparison totally makes sense here

                            Thanks a lot

So a similar debut. It’s a nice tune but not as strong as I was hoping for. Oh great pick! That would be my second, with “Ka-Ching!” being my favorite song from her  And why would you need to be ashamed for buying that single? Shania is a goddess

Who'd have thought Lena would be the eurovision winner getting a #1 in my chart when Loreen has failed to achieve the same feat. I say this because i love both Satellite and Euphoria, but Euphoria is the superior song imo.

I have seen the video and its funny to watch. It just didn't make me feel any more excited for the song itself so the video effect was non existent. :(

YES! This is so me as well. I can play Swish swish once and really enjoy it. If i go back for repeated listens throughout the day, that's when i start losing interest. It'll never be #1 in my chart for this reason so it did well to even peak at #12.

Ohh Ka-ching! is a good choice. I also really like Man i feel like a woman and I'm gonna getcha good although i never bought those songs on cd. I do have her album Come on over though.

LOL i said no shame because in 1999 Shania Twain wasn't seen as a "cool singer" by my friends at school. They didn't know what good music was.

Oops! I meant my favourite track so far from Calvin's latest project. Oh no, he's done some better songs overall in the past but i'm enjoying Feels a lot at the moment.

Aww i thought Downtown was like a natural progression from the first album as it showed a lot of humour in the lyrics and video. I had a lot of admiration for Macklemore when he did the song Same love about gay marriage. Not many rap artists would even considering doing such a track, yet alone pulling it off.

I say this because i love both Satellite and Euphoria, but Euphoria is the superior song imo.
True! I think everyone thought Loreen will keep on releasing great tunes while she didn’t… Lena is really like one of the very few – if not even the only one – who keeps on releasing singles and albums which keep on being successful. “Euphoria” is probably my all-time-favorite ESC winner. Anyways, didn’t Loreen reach #1 on your charts with “I’m In It With You” as well?

Oh sad, as it’s been completely different for me :(

#12 seems like a low peak though, any chance it will make the Top10 one day?

These two are great as well. Okay, to be fair, like all of her famous songs are really good. Oh you own one of her albums? I don’t… They just came out during a time when I didn’t start to buy CDs. Need to catch up with her discography, as I’m really excited for “Now” and I always liked her quite a lot.

Really? I thought she was everybody’s darling or so, similar to Taylor’s status in the US over the last few years.

It was too much like an “Uptown Funk” copy for me and too messy. But yes, “Same Love” deserved all the acclaim it got.

                                    week 26/2017 – 29 june 2017 a Disconnected Dream

                                    • Singles Top40

It’s not an exciting week when it comes to new entries in the Top40, though there’s still some action atop the charts, as Lena’s “If I Wasn’t Your Daughter” has to give away the charts crown after three weeks since the ballad slips 1-2. New on top is a surprising new release, coming from Finnish songstress Tarja. The singer released a single EP of “An Empty Dream”, a track which was originally for a Brazilian movie back in 2015, and was later included in a slightly different version on “The Brightest Void”, a mini album which was released as a prequel to the proper album “The Shadow Self” last year. It becomes Tarja’s 12th chart entry, with all of them being number one hits and with all of them except one debuting right on top. And while there were a few artists with only number one tracks in their discographies, 2017 has been a bad year for those, as Miley Cyrus or Lana Del Rey both got their first non-number one hits this year. From all artists with just number one songs in their discographies, Tarja is now second with 12, only behind Kerli who currently has 14 top hits out of 14 chart entries. Overall, it’s Lady GaGa who has the most number one tracks, as she scored her 15th top hit with “The Cure” earlier this year (34-37), while Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus both still have 12 top hits on their own as well.

With only four new arrivals on the whole Top40, it’s quite impressive to see a second one making the Top3 as well, and that’s “Disconnect” by Clean Bandit and Marina And The Diamonds. The former seem to have a good run, as it’s already their third Top3 appearance in a row following “Rockabye” (#3, Gold) and “Symphony” (#1, Gold), while it also becomes Marina’s third Top3 arrival following “Froot” (#1, Gold) and “Immortal” (#2, Gold), both being hits in 2015. From someone who has a good run to someone who seems to have a weak run. Following two singles which already underperformed for his standards, “Versace On The Floor” makes it three for Bruno Mars by debuting at a rather weak #17. The fourth and final new arrival is Little Mix’ “Power” at #27.

Jax Jones rises 7-4 with “Instruction” featuring Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don, switching places with Lindsey Stirling’s “Lost Girls”, which leaves the Top5 for the first time after six weeks and gets certified with Gold (4-7). Katy Perry still owns two Top10 hits with “Swish Swish” (3-5) and “Bon Appétit” (6-8), Selena Gomez’ “Bad Liar” is down 2-6, “Stay” becomes a Top10 hit for Zedd & Alessia Cara by rising 12-9 while Marina Kaye’s “On My Own” closes the Top10 (8-10).

Rita Ora’s “Your Song” (10-11), Robin Schulz’ “OK” (9-16) and Christina Grimmie’s “Sublime” (5-19) all leave the Top10. Meanwhile, while the album release pushed it back on the charts, its second week pushes Lorde’s “Green Light” even further as the track jumps 22-12 for its second highest position ever. An even bigger jump has “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons, as the song leaps 35-15 following their album release, which also brings the previous single “Believer” back onto the charts (#20). An album release effect may be something Miley Cyrus could need, as both of her songs lose even more spots than last week, with “Malibu” going down 14-25 and “Inspired” plummeting 18-35. With “Everyday” and “Break Free” leaving the Top40, Ariana Grande has just two songs left in the charts with “One Last Time” (19-28) and “Into You” (30-40). Last but not least, Alma’s “Requiem” goes Gold this week (32-36) as the second ESC entry from this year to do so.

Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder” is the biggest climber while Miley Cyrus’ “Inspired” owns the title for the biggest loser for another week.

                                    • Album Top20

In a week with just one debut, Halsey rises back to the top with her sophomore album “hopeless fountain kingdom”, spending a third week there as just the fifth album to do more than two weeks in 2017 so far. That one debut belongs to Imagine Dragons, as the band released their third studio album “Evolve”. The album is the follow-up release to their debut “Night Visions” (#4, Platinum) and “Smoke + Mirrors” (#1, Gold), and it debuts at number two. Katy Perry’s “Witness” makes the Top3 complete by staying at #3.

Christina Grimmie goes down 1-4 with “All Is Vanity”, followed by Lorde’s “Melodrama” which slips 4-5. Following the surprise release of “An Empty Dream”, Tarja returns to the album charts with both of her releases from last year, with “The Brightest Void” being back at #6, as it contains the new single. Surprisingly, it’s just the prequel to the proper album “The Shadow Self”, which makes its return at #16. Lindsey Stirling’s “Brave Enough” goes up 8-7 while Beth Ditto’s “Fake Sugar” falls 5-8. The last two entries in the Top10 are Linkin Park’s “One More Light” (6-9) and Aura’s “Can’t Steal The Music” (7-10), which both go Gold this week.

Speaking of new certifications, Zara Larsson’s “So Good” gets certified with Platinum this week, as it’s climbing back up 14-11. It’s just the second album which was released in 2017 and goes Platinum, following Ed Sheeran’s “÷” (13-13). “Heart Break” by Lady Antebellum (10-12) and Dua Lipa’s self-titled release (9-15) both leave the upper half.

Glad to hear you checked out my latest #1 and think it's at least interesting. Better than nothing, i guess Though i know you already enjoyed some of her previous songs (especially her work with Within Temptation on "Paradise (What About Us?"))

Not sure about that one yet. This era leaves me pretty cold so far. Well, his music is still good, but i'm not as impressed as i was with the stuff of "Unorthodox Jukebox", sadly. "Versace" still is a good song though and i hope it's another hit for him.

We already started to meet each other about a month prior that date, though it wasn’t really dating before that one evening. Haha sweet of you, thank you. I hope so too!

Ah, damn. I'd definitely be struggling if I had to go without those for a while (especially internet access!) So they just starting working YESTERDAY? For the other random tasks, are there any sexy neighbors who could possibly provide some assistance...?

Hmmm. What's been keeping you from sleeping over there more often, or him coming to your new place? His wife...? ;)

Really? That's surprising (and sad!) It'd probably make my Top 5. Now that I mention it, I guess my Top 5 would be (though not necessarily in this exact order): "Bon Appétit", "Bigger Than Me", "Swish Swish", "Roulette", and "Pendulum"/"Miss You More" (it's close call for that fifth spot.) "Power" and "Dance With The Devil" would be toward the very bottom.

PRISM ending up really growing on me, and I still enjoy almost all of it when I revisit it now (the only tracks I'm still inclined to skip are "By The Grace Of God" and "Spiritual"...and maybe "Double Rainbow" too.) It actually has almost the same amount of total play counts as Teenage Dream, which I NEVER would've guessed when it first came out! Also - what? It seems like you check out at least 2-3 new albums every week, but you couldn't be bothered to make time for OOTB?? Granted, it's not exactly a contender for my favorite Katy album, but it definitely has some worthwhile moments beyond the singles.

Shame on her for suppressing your self-expression ;) (Though I'm sure my mom also would've refused to support a goth phase if I'd ever tried one....)

Yeah, the "pink handbag" look isn't a style that I find particularly sexy either. I've tried to separate that from how I see them as a person overall, though (just because I don't find a guy's presentation/mannerisms attractive doesn't mean he's any less deserving of respect.) There's something admirable (and even a tad sexy, perhaps) about people who are willing to be completely open, express themselves however they want, especially when they know they're bound to get sh*t for it. It's hard to completely stop judgments from ever popping into our heads, though. Bottom line: I want to be a kinder, warmer, more genuinely accepting person...but that's way easier said than done.

Ha, that's a really fair point - your English is so clear I often forget it's not your first language!

I still didn’t give the original a chance until just a few weeks ago, as it kept on being stuck in my head… (and this also kinda explains Pentatonix’ longevity on my album charts, as he loves them and sometimes plays that EP as well).
He's a singer? Now THAT is sexy! Has his band put anything on YouTube? (So I can stalk him, obv.)

So basically: "Stay" is your song (as a couple) already! Love it!

                                            • I really need to start taking notes from Akini when it comes to describing songs that don't quite make the best first impression on me "A bit outside my scope of appreciation" is brilliant. I do like how this is a softer/less-metal offering from Tarja, though! Her voice is so...operatic.
                                            • Although I'm glad that we at least got SOME kind of video for "Swish Swish", it's hard to find the lyric video that hilarious/clever when I'd never even heard of Gretchen before The clip got pretty boring pretty fast for me (but at least some of the other dancers are worth watching...)
                                            • BEAUTIFUL to see "Versace On The Floor" finally debut! Is this thanks to the David Guetta mix, or just because it's finally an official single? Or did your man's band start practicing this one too...? ;)
                                            • Sadly, even after checking out the official video, I'm not feeling "Feels." Calvin's direction this era hasn't been doing it for me in general, but I can definitely respect his experimentation/delivering something unexpected. (I just won't actually be playing any of it very often...)
                                            • Although it seemed to get off to kind of a slow start, "Attention" has grown into a sizable global hit: Top 10 in the UK, Top 10 in Australia, currently No. 2 on US iTunes...and, most importantly, Top 25 here too ;) I wasn't really sold on it when it first came out, but I should revisit it again now...

                                            Yet another dreamy chart, Tansike!

                                              **Bursts into "Teenage Dream"**
True. That spark… wow. I completely forgot how beautiful it is to feel that way. A shame ‘falling in love’ can bring some negative feelings as well, as I’m currently having more of them so I can’t enjoy the positive feelings as much as I wish I could.

For the other random tasks, are there any sexy neighbors who could possibly provide some assistance...?

Hmmm. What's been keeping you from sleeping over there more often, or him coming to your new place? His wife...? ;)
Yes they only started working on tuesday, but thank god it’s working now. But I’m still so bored somehow, even though it’s not that different to my ‘previous life’ with my ex, as we never did something and I always had to be on the computer/at the TV as well. Anyways… it’s probably not even THAT bad to live without these stuff for a while. And no, no sexy neighbors here

Not his wife, but his best friend who is living with him. They have a really special ‘relationship’ and even work together, so they see each other the whole time and while my partner is jealous when that best friend is spending time together with his girlfriend, it’s probably also the other way around. Plus they have a rule that none of them can bring a ‘date’ when the other is at home. Though we already ‘broke’ that rule a few times. So yeah. That’s really tough, plus they will both go on a 3-week-vacation VERY soon so I’m actually pissed that I can’t see him more often right now… (like as if he won't have enough time with his best friend during these three weeks...)

Anyways, these are the fights people who are newly in love probably have to fight with

Amazing Top5! Mine definitely looks similar, but with “Miss You More” being no contender for a Top5 spot. I also dislike “Power”, don’t even know the latter. I guess it’s one of the bonus tracks?

I guess I need to give “Prism” another chance then as I haven’t heard it for like 2-3 years or so?! I’m still mad at her for never really releasing “Legendary Lovers” and “Walking On Air”, these were awesome. At least the latter was a promo single, better than nothing… but both were too good to not be released as proper singles, especially when something like “Birthday” got released :x
Well I only check that many albums out now, I didn’t do that when OOTB came out. But it's on my list of albums i'll definitely check out one day, simply because i always liked the singles and also liked most of the stuff Katy has released since then.

Oh it’s not like she didn’t want that, as she listens to harder stuff as well. It’s more a money thing, as she always had to buy the cheapest stuff if possible. I also often had to wear the stuff she bought for my brother as he's two years older than me.

That’s a good point and I also try to do that, but I have to admit that I still have some kind of prejudices when I see someone like this. And I get your bottom (ha! ) line as it’s the exactly same thing with me. I’ve become so close-minded over the last few years, was always complaining about stuff etc. which was also one of the reasons why I broke up with my ex, as I wanted to be me again. I used to be such a kind person, at least that’s what I thought I was and people also told me. I’m slowly getting there, also because I’m trying new things out which I didn’t try out before (and therefor I kinda judged the people who did some stuff simply because I didn’t know about it, and now I want to change that). Same thing with these, let me call them ‘pink handbag’-gays. I never went to a gay bar during my relationship, now I went there a very few times and I’m slowly getting used to it.
Were you a kinder person in the past? Because it also sounds a little bit like that, so you want to be a kinder person. I’m actually surprised you aren’t one, or you think you need to be kinder, as you always seemed very kind to me.

What really? Wow, that’s a huge compliment for me now! I still feel my English is very limited though. The sister in law of my partner just came here from America so I finally have someone to talk English to in real life and I’m actually shocked that I know much fewer words than I thought I would. My pronunciation is bad as well…

That’s lots of songs you like this week

Haha I agree, I loved that description of what he thinks about it Glad you enjoyed it… more or less, at least

The clip is awful. I mean, is she serious? Like, the song is too good to flop, but it really seems that she’s trying to flop with that album when she does things like this. Anyways, have you seen her performance on The Voice Australia? She slayed it! That’s finally another great performance and I would love if she keeps on promoting “Swish Swish”…

Because it’s officially a single. It was actually funny how they released that remix just when I decided to let the song finally on my charts. But it was just a case of an ‘old’ song which is waiting to enter my charts for ages yet I never let it onto my charts because I always found other tracks more worth an entry. But I gave it a go last week and now it’s back on my playlist, so it will be interesting to see how it will perform…

Aww that’s sad as I really like it, it’s so summery. The video is great too, love that it’s so colorful. Not sure how much I would like it without Katy though, probably similar case to “Heatstroke” with Ariana, as only these two made my charts so far while the other singles of Calvin’s new album didn’t even make the Top40…

I know this is such a surprising hit for Charlie. Also a reason why I gave it another chance a few weeks back and since then I’m quite liking it as well. Not enough that it would explode on my charts as well but at least enough so it keeps on charting in the Top30 Hopefully you can get back into “Attention” as well

                                              Thanks a lot

                                                    week 27/2017 – 6 july 2017 …a quiet week, time to Disconnect

                                                    • Singles Top40

Another pretty quiet week, as only five songs leave the Top40 due to three new arrivals and two re-entries, with the highest of these barely making the Top20. So there’s not a lot of change in the Top10, however there is a new number one, as Clean Bandit and Marina And The Diamonds’ “Disconnect” rises 3-1 following its debut a week ago, giving both artists their second top hit. Tarja’s “An Empty Dream” slips 1-2, followed by Jax Jones, Demi Lovato’s and Stefflon Don’s “Instruction”, which becomes a Top3 hit now (4-3).

Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris has released his newest album “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1”, which has a nice impact on the charts this week. Current single “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean jumps 21-9, while previous track “Heatstroke” featuring Young Thug, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande re-enters the charts at #20. With that jump for “Feels”, Katy Perry currently has three tracks inside the Top10, the other two being “Swish Swish” (5-6) and the newly Gold certified “Bon Appétit” (8-7). The rest of the best: “Stay” by Zedd and Alessia Cara rises 9-4, Lena’s “If I Wasn’t Your Daughter” is down 2-5, Marina Kaye’s “On My Own” gets a seventh week in the Top10 (10-8) while Lindsey Stirling’s “Lost Girls” closes them by falling 7-10.

The highest new arrival is called “Truth To Power” and belongs to OneRepublic. The song is a soundtrack single and debuts at #19 as their eleventh Top20 hit. At a weak #33 there’s the second highest debut of the week, which is “Two Fux”, the newest single by former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert. It’s currently his lowest debuting and peaking chart entry. Last but not least, the third and final debut goes to ZZ Ward, who gets her first hit ever as a main artist with “Help Me Mama” at #39 – it is however her second entry overall, as she was featured on Lindsey Stirling’s Platinum certified hit “Hold My Heart”. The second re-entry is Lorde’s “Perfect Places” at #24.

The chart being quite stagnant means there are several songs also outside of the Top10 which show a good stability. Lorde’s “Green Light” (12-11), Rita Ora’s “Your Song” (11-12), Halsey’s “Now Or Never” (13-14), Shania Twain’s “Life’s About To Get Good” (14-17) and Bruno Mars’ “Versace On The Floor” (17-18) are good examples when it comes to the upper half of the charts. Also worth a mention are “Thunder” (15-13) and “Believer” (20-16) by Imagine Dragons, which both get another week in the upper half while the former even gets a new peak. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez’ “Bad Liar” has to leave the Top10 with a quite big drop (6-15). Speaking about drops, Christina Grimmie’s “Sublime” has an even worse one, as the song tumbles down 19-32, being yet another song from her which doesn’t show longevity at all.

The biggest climber and the biggest loser are both quite obvious this week, with the former being Calvin Harris’ “Feels” and the latter being Christina Grimmie’s “Sublime”.

It’s also not the most exciting week on the album charts, with just two debuts, and one of them even looked like it wouldn’t make it at first simply because I didn’t know about its release until pretty late of the chart week. So it’s no surprise to see Halsey spending a fourth week at number one with “hopeless fountain kingdom”, which ties Zara Larsson’s “So Good” as the longest running number one album of the year so far. The whole Top3 remains stagnant with “Evolve” by Imagine Dragons sitting at #2 and “Witness” by Katy Perry staying at #3 for another week.

While his last album “Motion” didn’t even reach the Top10 on the weekly chart (#12), which was quite easy to reach at that time, Calvin Harris’ newest record “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1” does it now by debuting at a surprisingly good #4. The second arrival is at #5 and is called “The Storm”, the second studio album by American singer-songwriter ZZ Ward, who gets her very first notation ever on the album charts with it. There’s also a re-entry on the charts. Following the simple release of a snippet of a song from an upcoming album project, Anette Olzon’s solo debut set “Shine” is back at #10 for its incredible 99th charting week. Between these new and re-entries, there’s still “All Is Vanity” by Christina Grimmie (4-6), “Melodrama” by Lorde (5-7), “Brave Enough” by Lindsey Stirling (7-8) and “One More Light” by Linkin Park (9-9).

After its re-entry a week ago, Tarja’s “The Brightest Void” already leaves the Top10 (6-11), with her second entry “The Shadow Self” falling some spots as well (16-18). Aura’s “Can’t Steal The Music” (10-14) and Beth Ditto’s “Fake Sugar” (8-16) both leave the upper half too.
