week 49/2014 – 4 december 2014 Jessie J Vs. Within Temptation
- Singles Top40
There’s a new number one single and that one got the top position quite easily. It’s “Edge Of The World”, the fifth single of Within Temptation’s sixth studio album “Hydra”, which becomes the fourth single from the album to score a top debut after “Paradise” (two weeks in 2013), “Dangerous” (one week in 2013) and “And We Run” (one week this year). Only the third single “Whole World Is Watching” missed the top spot but peaked at #2 and got certified with Platinum, while “Dangerous” is only certified with Gold. It’s also their fifth number one single overall (“Faster” topped the charts for five weeks in 2011) and 13th charts appearance overall.
The bigger surprise is the second highest debut which makes its entry just behind Within Temptation. After “Bang Bang” and “Burnin’ Up”, Jessie J released “Masterpiece” as the third single of her third album “Sweet Talker” and gets the third Top3-hit. It’s already the fifth Top3 hit in her entire career, but she never reached the top postion so far. Closing the Top3 is Selena Gomez’ former number one hit “The Heart Wants What It Wants” (1-3).
Ariana Grande slips 3-4 with “Love Me Harder”, followed by Jessie J’s “Burnin’ Up” (7-5). It’s now her song with the most weeks inside the Top10 with seven, surpassing the six weeks of “Nobody’s Perfect” three years ago. Calvin Harris falls 2-6 together with Ellie and “Outside”, while french singer Indila reaches a new peak for “Love Story” (9-7). A third new entry makes its way to the Top10. After the successful “Christmas Kisses” EP from last year, Ariana Grande also released a christmas single this year called “Santa Tell Me”. It debuts at #8, becoming her 13th charts entry – but also the lowest peaking so far. The last two songs in the Top10 are “Dangerous” by David Guetta (4-9) and swiss pop band Pegasus’ new single “Last Night On Earth” (19-10), which becomes their first Top10 entry.
Several songs fall out of the Top10 this week; Ariana Grande is down 8-11 with “Break Free”, Gwen Stefani falls 6-12 with “Baby Don’t Lie”, followed by Nicole Scherzinger’s “Run” (5-13) and “Jealous” by Nick Jonas decreases 10-17. After the surprisingly big drop the last time, Lindsey Stirling’s “Roundtable Rival” remains on the same position this week (16-16), just like Sunrise Avenue’s “Nothing Is Over” (14-14). Lindsey’s other hit – “Master Of Tides” – leaves the Top20 for the first time after six weeks, down 20-22. Passenger’s “Scare Away The Dark” (15-25) and Olly Murs’ “Wrapped Up” (18-30) have to leave the upper half as well, with the latter one showing a rather disappointing charts performance so far. Meanwhile, Coldplay’s new single “Ink” gets a surprising boost and reaches the Top30 (39-29).
There isn’t much more exciting except the new entries, and there are four more new entries on the charts. Robin Schulz gets another entry with “Sun Goes Down” which features Jasmine Thompson. It’s the follow-up to the #9-peaking “Prayer In C”. AronChupa from Sweden debuts with his debut hit “I’m An Albatraoz” at #32, which could become the next novelty hit. The last two new entries are “Yours” by Ella Henderson (#37) and “Take Me To Church” by Hozier (#40).
Coldplay’s “Ink” is the biggest climber while Olly Murs’ “Wrapped Up” is the biggest loser.

- Album Top20
It’s a similar situation on the Album Top20 like on the Singles Top40. While Selena Gomez has to leave the top position and is down to number three with “For You”, it’s Within Temptation who takes the crown. But not with a new entry like on the singles charts, but with “Let Us Burn”. The live album is back up 2-1, getting a second week on top as the ninth album to get multiple weeks on top this year and just the second one to get two non-consecutive weeks after Lindsey Stirling’s “Shatter Me”, which had the same chartrun during its first three weeks. Even more surprising is the third entry in the Top3 as Jessie J’s “Sweet Talker” is up 8-2 in its 8th week. It’s already charting as many weeks as her previous album “Alive” spent in the Top20.
Olly Murs’ fourth album “Never Been Better” gets a second week at #4, while David Guetta’s “Listen” is down 2-5 in its second week. Within Temptation’s current studio album “Hydra” also benefits a lot from the new single, going up 11-6. Despite its impressive chartrun, it wasn’t that high since 23 weeks when it got a big push due to the previous single “And We Run”. While Nicole Scherzinger slips 6-7 with “Big Fat Lie”, Nick Jonas’ self-titled album enters the Top10 for the first time at #8 after two weeks at #13. Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” (9-9) and Within Temptation’s “Enter” (5-10) fill out the last two places from the Top10.
Within Temptation’s EP “The Dance” falls out of the Top10 after three weeks (7-11), that’s only one less than Taylor Swift’s “1989” which is down 10-14 this week. “1989” is now Taylor’s fastest falling album so far, but it should have the chance to recover soon once the second official single “Blank Space” will make an impact.
Indila’s debut album “Mini World” is definitely one of the most successful albums this year. It topped the charts for two weeks earlier this year and now it comes back at #16 due to her new single “Love Story”. Also back on the charts is Pegasus’ “Love & Gunfire” (#19).

- Airplay Top10
Within Temptation also get the number one on the Airplay Top10, but not with the new single “Edge Of The World”. That one is making a re-entry at #3 instead, and it’s the live version of “Candles” from the live album “Let Us Burn” which tops the airplay charts, going up 2-1 in its third week. Not counting re-entries due to new single releases, this is the first time a song takes more than just one week until it gets a top position on the airplay charts.
Some songs from Jessie J’s current album “Sweet Talker” already made the airplay charts a few weeks ago when the album got released, but the new single “Masterpiece” never made one and so it’s making its debut at #2 this time. The previous single “Burnin’ Up” re-enters and re-peaks at #4, followed by the title track at #5 and “Get Away” at #7.
The two other charting songs from Within Temptation’s current number one album from last week are also charting this week; “The Last Dance” slips 5-6 while “Say My Name” falls 6-8. The last two songs on the charts are Selena Gomez’ “The Heart Wants What It Wants” which tumbles 1-9 after three weeks on top and Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” as a new entry at #10.
Plays of the Top10 went up by 43 to 232 (+22.8%) compared to last week.

Nice charts! There are a few songs I need to check out, especially the one by Within Temptation. I've heard a couple of songs from them (can't recall their titles, they were from 2005/2008 IIRC) and I liked them, they sounded like a "poppier" version of Evanescence to me.
1989 is probably my favourite album from the ones you're charting, even though my favourites aren't singles or promo tracks (except for Blank Space). ;)

"Edge Of The World" is easily their best single since "And We Run"Great to see it on your top spot!
Also, it's nice to see that Selena is still part of your top5 and that new Grande Christmas song is so cute
WHAT a drop for Olly's latest single.. but I have to say that I'm tired of him at the moment.. each lead single sounds the same (however, they get "weaker" each era, though)... However, I loved his last album; especially "Dear Darlin'" and "Hand On Your Heart".. He's usually gettin' me with his later singles... not keen on his 'more commercial' uptempo tracks.Mainshow Goes Diva: Kylie Minogue

Still not sure how to feel about Masterpiece..it's certainly not bad though and i'm glad she's having some success with it in Europe.

I feel somehow sorry for her, because i like her album, but the competition is so strong lately. Same for Passenger. Both deserve more but they can't get more

They sound a little bit more commercial nowadays than they did around ten years ago, but as you can see i still love them.
Surprised you think they sound 'poppier' than Evanescence, especially during 1997-2004 WT sounded way harder than Evanescence ever did
Which are your faves? Mine is "I Know Places"

It was difficult to decide if i let it chart or not, because only singles (also promo, radio etc.) are eligible to make an entry. But hey, it was announced by WT and they released the single cover - plus i needed a fresh #1 so i thought i let it chart... it also deserves so IMO
Glad you like all these other entries as well. Also good that you started to like Ariana's music now too.
Olly's song is really weak compared to his previous lead singles, but the album is better than that! I prefer "Never Been Better" to "Right Place Right Time" (which was my first album by him)
But i'm not sure if you will like the second single as well...

week 50/2014 – 11 december 2014 Carrie’s charts comeback
- Singles Top40
This week it’s all about Jessie J, and what a week it was for her! “Burnin’ Up”, the second single of her current third album “Sweet Talker”, becomes her first number one single ever by rising 5-1. It peaked at #3 some weeks ago and stayed in the Top10 for impressive eight weeks so far. It’s likely to become her most successful hit ever... and Jessie J’s biggest competiton came from Jessie herself! After the fantastic debut of “Masterpiece” last week, the follow-up to “Burnin’ Up” remains at number two. The song just became a surprising Top10 hit in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
After just one week, Within Temptation’s “Edge Of The World” is down 1-3. It’s now already their third number one song that debuted at number one but fell down in its second week. Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder” remains at #4, followed by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding’s “Outside” which is back up 6-5. Selena Gomez’ former top hit “The Heart Wants What It Wants” leaves the Top3 for the first time after four weeks by falling 3-6. While “Santa Tell Me” is down 8-13, Ariana Grande still has two hits in the Top10 as “Break Free” is back up 11-7. There are also two songs in the Top10 that never were in this territory. The first one is called “I’m An Albatraoz” by swedish DJ AronChupa. The song climbs 32-8 in its second charting week and is becoming a worldwide hit now after smashing in his home country. The second is also a scandinavian entry as “Nothing Is Over” by finnish group Sunrise Avenue climbs 14-9. Closing the Top10 is Indila’s “Love Story” (7-10).
Pegasus’ “Last Night On Earth” slips 10-11, and despite being already out of the Top10 after only one week it’s still doing a lot better than their previous entries. David Guetta’s “Dangerous” is the last song that’s out of the Top10 from last week, as it’s down 9-12. The highest new entry this week misses the Top10, which doesn’t happen too often lately. It’s “Blank Space”, the official second single from Taylor Swift’s album “1989”, and makes a moderate start at #15. Even the promo singles “Out Of The Woods” (#6) and “Welcome To New York” (#14) peaked higher. Just behind Taylor there’s a re-entry as Carrie Underwood’s current single “Something In The Water” re-enters the charts due to the release of her greatest hits collection. There are two more songs in the upper half of the charts that are worth a mention: “You Can Never Be Ready” by Sunrise Avenue which is back in the better half (21-18) and Coldplay’s “Ink” which climbs 29-20 and becomes their fouth Top20 hit.
Live Albums and Greatest Hits collections are always a good way to push old hits as well. And there are even two surprising re-entries this week due to these albums. The higher one is “Blown Away”, a single by Carrie Underwood which was originally released in 2012. Due to Carrie’s new “Greatest Hits: Decade #1” release the former #2-peaking song re-enters the charts at #21. Seven places lower at #28 there’s “Sinéad”, the second single of Within Temptation’s fifth album “The Unforgiving” from 2011. This song is back on the charts due to their live album “Let Us Burn”. Irish newcomer Hozier climbs a lot with his debut hit “Take Me To Church”, up 40-24 after the very low debut from last week. Maybe he will get his first Top20 next week?
Several songs lose a lot places this time. Nicole Scherzinger’s “Run” falls 13-26 after a very good start, while Nick Jonas’ singles “Jealous” (17-27) and “Chains” (23-38) are both decreasing a lot. Lindsey Stirling’s “Shatter Me” (19-22) and Passenger’s “Heart’s On Fire” (18-23) don’t lose too many places compared to these songs, but are out of the upper half after a very long time.
Three more new entries are obviously worth a mention. David Guetta gets another entry from his current album “Listen” as “Bad” enters the charts at #32, followed by “7/11” by Beyoncé at #33. The last new entry comes from The Common Linnets and is called “Love Goes On”. Its debut at #40 is not that promising as their last single “Give Me A Reason” also debuted and peaked at the same place.
The biggest climber is AronChupa’s debut single “I’m An Albatraoz” while the biggest loser is Nick Jonas’ “Chains”.

- Album Top20
It’s also a good week on the album charts for Jessie J as her “Sweet Talker” is up 2-1. With two weeks on top now it’s her first album to do so as her debut “Who You Are” only spent its very first week atop of the charts. That means that Within Temptation are down again, and “Let Us Burn” is again down to #2. The first and only new entry of the weeks closes the Top3. After the very successful album “Blown Away” from two years ago, US country sensation Carrie Underwood is ready to release her first best of called “Greatest Hits: Decade #1”, and gets the same peak as “Blown Away” so far.
Selena Gomez’ “For You” slips 3-4, followed by Olly Murs’ “Never Been Better” which is down just one place as well (4-5). With two big hit singles and one more christmas song on the charts, it’s not a surprise to see “My Everything” by Ariana Grande back up the charts as well, up 9-6 this week. The chances to see her EP “Christmas Kisses” back on the Album Top20 soon as well are getting bigger with each week. David Guetta’s “Listen” (5-7), Within Temptation’s “Hydra” (6-8), Anette Olzon’s “Shine” (12-9) and Nicole Scherzinger’s “Big Fat Lie” (7-10) fill out the Top10.
After only one week, Nick Jonas’ self-titled album is already out of the Top10 again (8-12). Within Temptation’s debut album from 1998 is also falling out of the Top10, tumbling 10-19, just like their EP “The Dance” which is down 11-20.
There are three re-entries in the lower part of the charts. “Cheek To Cheek” by Tony Bennett and Lady GaGa is back at #13 mainly due to their H&M commercial, estonian songstress Kerli’s second record “Utopia” makes a comeback at #15 while Ed Sheeran’s current release “x” is back at #17 after one week outside the charts. The last thing worth a mention is something negative. Despite being very successful, Lindsey Stirling’s “Shatter Me” leaves the charts this week after 31 weeks on the charts. This is definitely an impressive number, but still far less than what her debut album did, as that one left the charts for the first time after astonishing 57 weeks..

- Airplay Top10
It’s also all about Jessie J’s latest record on the Airplay Top10. The leader of the Singles Top40 also takes the crown on the airplay charts, climbing 4-1 to become her first chart topper on the airplay charts as well. It’s followed by “Sweet Talker”, the title track of her album, which is up 5-2 and “Masterpiece” which slips 2-3.
The ballad “Get Away” re-peaks (10-4). “Bang Bang” together with Ariana and Nicki is back at #5 after peaking at #4 due to the album release of Ariana’s “My Everything”. Despite being played a lot, “Fire” and “Personal” never made the charts so far. But now the album tracks by Jessie J finally got enough plays for an entry at #6 and #7. She even gets an eighth entry as “Loud” featuring Lindsey Stirling is back at #9.
Two songs are on the charts that aren’t by Jessie J. Last week’s chart topper “Candles” decreases 1-9 and remains the only surviving song by Within Temptation. The last song is a surprising entry. Due to the new greatest hits compilation, Carrie Underwood’s hit “Blown Away” makes its debut on the airplay charts at #10.
Plays of the Top10 went up by 23 to 255 (+9.9%) compared to last week.
