    week 1/2015 – 1 january 2015 Happy New Year <3

    • Singles Top40

    …Happy New Year everyone!

Welcome to 2015, and it happens that the first thursday of the year is equal to the first day of the year, so it's already time for the first Charts!

After releasing the first six tracks of her upcoming 13th studio album “Rebel Heart”, the official lead single by Madonna called “Living For Love” makes now its debut on the Singles Top40 directly on top. Despite liking her music for several years now, Madonna never got that much attention like she deserved on my weekly charts and so “Living For Love” is actually her first number one hit and fifth appearance overall. Her closest rival was irish newcomer Hozier, whose rising 31-2 with his breakthrough hit “Take Me To Church”. Closing the Top3 is Within Temptation’s “Edge Of The World” which falls 1-3.

Two more new entries arrive in the Top5. After the rather disappointing “Wrapped Up”, Olly Murs releases “Up” as the follow-up single which features Demi Lovato and the song debuts at #4 this week, becoming Olly’s third Top5 hit (only “Troublemaker” peaked higher at #3) and Demi’s sixth Top5 appearance. The other debut comes from actor Billy Boyd and his song “The Last Time”. Who? Billy Boyd played the hobbit ‘Pippin’ in the Lord Of The Rings movies, and “The Last Time” serves as the movie song for the third and last Hobbit movie. Last years movie song “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran became a huge hit, so it will be interesting to see how Billy will do with his song. The rest of the Top10 is filled with older songs. Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder” is up 7-6, followed by her own “Santa Tell Me” (5-7). She even gets a third Top10 entry with “Love Is Everything” (2-9). The last two songs there are “Masterpiece” by Jessie J (2-8) and AronChupa’s “I’m An Albatraoz” (4-10).

The new year starts with a lot of new songs, nine to be exact. A third of them are already revealed, so let’s take a look at the other six. Kwabs is a newcomer whose living in the UK right now and his current single “Walk” already became a pretty big hit in Germany. Due to the Forum Song Contest, the song can make an entry at #14 this week. A bit lower there’s the new single by Marina And The Diamonds. After a pretty successful second album, “Froot” will be released as her third album in a few months, with the title track being the lead single and it makes a debut at #18. Demi Lovato’s new single “Nightingale” makes a debut at #22 as the fifth single of her fourth album “Demi”. No other (ex) disney act got so many single releases from Hollywood Records, and all of the other ones reached the Top5 on my charts with “Neon Lights” being her first and only chart topper so far. The last three entries are “The Words” by Christina Perri (#25), “20 Steps” by MarieMarie (#27) and Pentatonix’s first charting hit “Mary, Did You Know?” (#30). The first two artists got two Top2 hits during 2014, so it will be interesting to see if their new singles can do the same.

Nicki Minaj scores another Top20 hit as “Only” improves 25-16. After only one good week, most christmas singles are already falling a lot this time. While Kelly Clarkson’s “Wrapped In Red” (#29) and Migros Ensemble’s “Ensemble” (#34) are out of the charts this time, Ariana Grande’s “Santa Baby” (12-21), her own “Snow In California” (18-31), Malena Ernman’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (16-37) and Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath The Tree” (14-38) all fall a lot of places.

Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” is the obvious biggest climber while Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath The Tree” is the biggest loser.

    • Album Top20

The new year also brings a new number one album, and it’s actually not a big surprise. While the soundtrack for the second Hobbit movie debuted and peaked on top of the charts in the first week of 2014, it’s the soundtrack for the third and final Hobbit movie which makes the same in the first week of 2015, so this week. It will be interesting to see if this new soundtrack can repeat the success of its predecessor as that one got certified with Gold and showed good longevity.

Not only did the christmas singles poorly compared to the last season, also the albums disappointed. But that changes a little bit with this week as there’s a late debut with A Capella band Pentatonix debuting at #2 with “That’s Christmas To Me”. The album became a surprising big hit in the US, selling more than one million copies and becoming the fourth best selling album of 2014 there, and now it becomes the highest peaking christmas album of this season on my weekly charts, tying Ariana Grande’s “Christmas Kisses” which is down 2-5 this week.

After two weeks on top, Nicki Minaj’s “The Pinkprint” falls 1-3. Within Temptation’s live album “Let Us Burn” remains pretty strong and slips 3-4, collecting already the seventh week in the Top5. Carrie Underwood’s “Greatest Hits” is down 4-6, followed by Olly Murs’ “Never Been Better” (8-7). There’s also a third new entry this week as Hozier’s self-titled debut album makes a debut at #8. The last two albums in the Top10 are Jessie J’s “Sweet Talker” (6-9) and Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” (7-10).

“Cheek To Cheek” by Tony Bennett & Lady GaGa (5-11), “Hydra” by Within Temptation (9-12) and One Direction’s “FOUR” (10-18) are all out of the Top10. The two other christmas and winter albums are loosing a lot of places this time, with Malena Ernman’s “I decembertid” falling 13-20 and Kelly Clarkson’s “Wrapped In Red” is even out from the charts (#11 last week).

    • Airplay Top10

It’s also the Queen Of Pop who makes a big impact on the Airplay Top10. While only the proper single “Living For Love” is eligible for an entry on the Singles Top40, all six songs are eligible for the airplay charts and all of them got enough plays to make a good entry. “Devil Pray”, which already made its entry last week, is up 7-1 to become her first airplay chart topper. It’s followed by “Living For Love” (#2) and “Ghosttown” (#3). “Illuminati” debuts at #4, “Unapologetic Bitch” at #5 and the Nicki Minaj collaboration “Bitch I’m Madonna” at #7.

There are even more new entries this week as Madonna’s “Devil Pray” is the only song that also charted on last weeks chart. Irish newcomer Hozier makes his debut on the airplay charts as “Take Me To Church” debuts at #6. Also new are Billy Boyd’s “The Last Time” (#8) and Olly Murs & Demi Lovato’s “Up” (#10). The last song on the charts is Within Temptation’s “Edge Of The World” which makes a re-entry at #9.

Plays of the Top10 went down by 121 to 241 (-33.4%) compared to last week.

It's a pity Carrie fell a bit hopefully she'll rise a bit in the future.

          • It's always good to see Madonna at #1 , especially since she didn't get to #1 during the MDNA era.

Is Devil Pray your fav of the six tracks so far?

            • wo-hoo! I also waited for 2015 to start to officially have Madonna debut in my chart with that song! I know it's gonna be her year (again), hopefully in a better way than with her latest 2 albums. Looks like she's giving more attention to marketing this time so maybe it'll be a successful album. Tracks look very promising as well, compared to her last hit singles.

definitely happy about Hozier rise to #2... it was one of the outstanding songs for me in 2013 and I ain't bored yet to listen to it now that it's a worldwide hit!

A new year, a new start! Looking forward to following your chart again this year!

Shame you didn't like Wrapped Up too much - for me it's the other way around though, I don't care for Up. The album as a whole is ace. I also really like Living for Love - one of my favourite Madonna lead singles in a while.

Like all the albums I highlighted. I still haven't listened to Hozier yet, should do that soon. I only heard Indila's debut once and I was surprised by how much I liked it! Before that I had only ever heard the chorus bit from Dernière Danse and I didn't care for it, but when I heard the full song I was sold and the rest of the album was even better. I should give it another spin.

Sad to see my current chart topper "Blank Space" only peaked at #15 on your chart. Don't you like it?

"Living For Love" really deserves it, gread lead single

Tracks look very promising as well, compared to her last hit singles.

definitely happy about Hozier rise to #2... it was one of the outstanding songs for me in 2013 and I ain't bored yet to listen to it now that it's a worldwide hit!
Definitely! The first three tracks ("Living For Love", "Devil Pray" and "Ghosttown") are already better than "MDNA" for me tbh

It grew a lot on me, love it now

Shame you didn't like Wrapped Up too much - for me it's the other way around though, I don't care for Up. The album as a whole is ace. I also really like Living for Love - one of my favourite Madonna lead singles in a while.

Like all the albums I highlighted. I still haven't listened to Hozier yet, should do that soon. I only heard Indila's debut once and I was surprised by how much I liked it! Before that I had only ever heard the chorus bit from Dernière Danse and I didn't care for it, but when I heard the full song I was sold and the rest of the album was even better. I should give it another spin.
                    Thanks

Glad you like so many entries.
"Wrapped Up" didn't do much to me, he has so many better singles and it was kinda generic...

Hozier's album is pretty solid. If you like the single, you will like the album as well. Indila's debut is fantastic, glad you like it too

Unfortunately, i think it's one of the worst songs of "1989"... but if "Style" is the next single, then she should get another hit

                      • Singles Top40

While there were many new entries last week, there are only four this time. The main reason for this was that I wasn’t seeking for new songs lately and the new year just started, which is usually a quiet week anyway. There is still a new number one, but it’s one of those new entries from last week. After a modest debut, Marina And The Diamonds’ new single “Froot” rises a lot, up 18-1. It becomes her first chart topper and third Top10 notation from three entries total. The official song for the third Hobbit movie called “The Last Goodbye” by Billy Boyd also gets an improvement, up 5-2. Its peak is now the same like last years soundtrack “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran. Rounding up the Top3 is Madonna’s “Living For Love” which is down 1-3.

Only one debut made it into the upper half, and it’s the new single by Sam Smith called “Like I Can”. It’s debuting at #4, just like the previous single “I’m Not The Only One” did, and because “Money On My Mind” peaked at #4 too, his only song with another peak remains “Stay With Me” (#2). Let’s take a look at the other new entries… I’m from Switzerland, but swiss music makes an entry on my charts very rarely. This week, the rap duo Lo & Leduc are doing it with their single “Jung verdammt” at #25. It’s their first real hit over here and is on heavy rotation by the radio stations, so it’s impossible to escape from it. While I hated it at first, I really like it a lot now so it’s one of the very rare swiss entry. After the big #2-peaking hit “Baby Don’t Lie”, Gwen Stefani is back with “Spark The Fire”. Unfortunately, the song is a huge disappointment and debuts just at #30, being her only song to make a debut outside the Top10 so far. The last entry comes from the legendary UK band Take That and their new single “These Days” (#38).

Hozier falls down 2-5 with “Take Me To Church”, followed by Within Temptation’s “Edge Of The World” which leaves the Top3 for the first time after five weeks. Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” (12-7) supersedes “Santa Tell Me” (7-16) as her second Top10 entry beside “Love Me Harder” (6-8). Olly Murs’ “Up” featuring Demi Lovato falls 4-9 after its debut the last time while Pegasus are back up 19-10 with “Last Night On Earth” which closes this weeks Top10.

Last year was the year of ballads and the trend continues this year. While three new ballads made their debut the last time, all of them get new peaks inside the Top20 now. Demi Lovato’s “Nightingale” remains the highest one (22-15), followed by Christina Perri’s “The Words” (25-18). “20 Steps” by MarieMarie may be the lowest one, but it gets the biggest increase from all three (27-19).

Marina And The Diamonds’ “Froot” is the biggest climber while the christmas singles “Love Is Everything” (9-24) and “Santa Baby” (21-36) by Ariana Grande are the biggest losers.

Less new entries on the singles charts often also means less new entries on the album charts, and there is not even one new album on the charts this week, but at least three re-entries. And despite christmas being over for some time now, Pentatonix climb to the top with their first charting album “That’s Christmas To Me”, up 2-1 after the already late debut from the last time. It becomes just the second christmas release to top the charts after Ariana Grande’s “Christmas Kisses” did so last year, but failed to do it this year.

Within Temptation’s “Let Us Burn” is still very strong on the charts, back up 4-2 this week for a 8th week in the Top5. Their current studio album “Hydra” (up 12-11 this week) also spent its first eight week in the Top5, but fell 4-7 in its ninth week, so it will be interesting to see if “Let Us Burn” will leave that territory next week as well. The Soundtrack for the Hobbit closes the Top3, down 1-3.

Nicki Minaj’s “The Pinkprint” slips 3-4, followed by Ariana Grande’s “My Everything”. The album celebrates its 20th week on the charts by climbing back to the Top5 (10-5) – its highest position since sixteen weeks! Hozier’s selt-titled debut album gets a new peak (8-6), while Olly Murs gets his first Gold certification for “Never Been Better” which remains at #7. Apart from Jessie J’s “Sweet Talker” (9-8) and Carrie Underwood’s “Greatest Hits” (6-10), Sam Smith fills out the Top10 as his debut album “In The Lonely Hour” re-enters the charts at #9.

Ariana Grande’s “Christmas Kisses” is the only release to lose its Top10 spot as it’s down 5-12. The two other re-entries are “Dream Machine” by MarieMarie (#18) and Ed Sheeran’s hit album “x” (#19). The latter should increase a lot soon, as he’s giving a concert over here in a few weeks.

                      • Airplay Top10

Over on the airplay charts, it’s also Marina And The Diamonds who easily gets the crown with her new single “Froot”. The song got a whopping 127 plays, the highest amount for a song in one week since last summer when Ariana Grande debuted atop of the airplay charts with her promo single “Best Mistake” which got 137 plays. Despite the huge gap to the second place, it’s still Madonna who’s actually slaying the airplay charts as she still owns six entries, with “Devil Pray” (1-2) and “Living For Love” (2-3) getting a second week in the Top3.

The song “Ghosttown” slips 3-4, “Unapologetic Bitch” is down 5-6, “Illuminati” falls 4-7 while “Bitch I’m Madonna” remains her lowest song (7-9). It was also pretty quite on the airplay charts as apart from “Froot” there’s no new song, and only Olly Murs’ “Up” left the charts. That means that Billy Boyd’s “The Last Goodbye” (8-5), Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” (6-8) and Within Temptation’s “Edge Of The World” (9-10) are still on the charts.

Plays of the Top10 went up by 44 to 285 (+18.3%) compared to last week.

                              • My favorite song so far is also 'Devil Pray', closely followed by 'Bitch I'm Madonna' and 'Living For Love'.

Another awesome #1 this week. 'Froot' is one of my most anticipated Albums of the year so far (especially because I loved her debut album a lot and the sophomore album was such a drop in Quality imo... didn't really feel it Overall).
I also love the track 'Happy', I recommend you to check it out, it's awesome.

The longevity for 'Break Free' is outstanding and the song deserves it.

Good to see 'The Words' jumping into the Top 20 this week.

Good to know we share the same favorite "Bitch I'm Madonna" was the worst one for me at first, but it grew on me and now i like it more than "Illuminati", but i still prefer the four other songs...

Glad you like "Froot" that much. It's so hypnotic... i mean, it's nothing spectacular, but the song is just damn catchy and addictive! Can't wait for her album as well.
Thanks, i'll check it out (same with the other promo song "Immortal")

Yes, i listened to the album 2-3 times last week and BF sounded so good again...
"The Words" is a good ballad, good single choice!

                                                • I know we used to have the same #1s all the time ... it all changed with the release of SIO imo I have not updated my chart for like 5-6 weeks now and I miss it so bad N I wanna restart it but most prolly I will be taking a break from the internet in Feb/March for my board exams so I don't wanna stop it again ... but April seems so late and I'm gonna lose a lot of #1s/data till then .. like I did in 2013 and it was so much trouble for the YEC ... 2014 was comparatively easy as I had a chart from the first week of the year to the third last week of December any suggestions ?

                                                  • Well, just do it. Even if you won't have internet for some time, i'm sure you will still listen to some songs during that time and you could write the charts down on paper instead of ukmix or so? And you could publish it once you're back using the internet and everything would be complete

It would be really sad if you would stop with your charts, i miss them!
