Singles Top40

Another week, another top hit, as 10:35 has been played like crazy since its release and so the collaboration by Tiësto and Tate McRae was a no brainer for this weeks number one, rising 5-1. It already becomes the 28th top hit of the year and also already the fifth collaboration to reach the top. More importantly, it’s the very first number one track for both of them.

Their biggest competition was a new release that isn’t exactly that new, as Blackmore’s Night announced a special 25th anniversary edition for their debut album Shadow Of The Moon, that will be released in early 2023. To promote their pre-orders, they already released a new mix of its title track that was originally released as a single back in 1997, but its new mix brings it to the Singles Top40 for its first time at #2.

Completing the Top3 is British singer-songwriter Tom Odell, who has scored his first Top20 hit with Flying two weeks ago, and makes an even bigger splash now, as the track jumps 14-3.

Other new and re-entries this week: Ava Max keeps preparing the release of her upcoming second studio album and following the Top10 tracks Maybe You’re The Problem and Million Dollar Baby, new track Weapons continues that streak by arriving at #6. Even though these are great results, it’s still worth a mention how none of the tracks have performed as well as the singles from her debut Heaven & Hell. Also making the Top10 is Kim Petras, as following her long deserved mainstream breakthrough with Unholy alongside Sam Smith, Kim just put out her own new track If Jesus Was A Rockstar that makes it to #8. It’s her ninth consecutive Top10 notation.

Country-Pop superstar Carrie Underwood finally picked a new single from her latest album Denim & Rhinestones with Hate My Heart, that debuts at #17. The fifth and sixth and therefore final new entries are both some sort of comebacks, as US singer-songwriter Julia Michaels returns with Sorry To Me Too after nearly two years (#31) collecting her eighth chart entry, while Belgian singer Loïc Nottet is back with Mélodrame (#37) as his ninth chart entry and first in exactly two years.

Finally, there’s also one re-entry at #19 and one that could have tons of potential for next week: The Reckoning by Within Temptation and Jacoby Shaddix. The song was originally released four years ago in late 2018, when despite its late release it still ended up #4 on the Year-End Charts 2018. The re-entry for the song is some sort of pre-concert effect, as Within Temptation and Evanescence team up on the Worlds Collide Tour that finally just started after years of waiting due to the pandemic and will be making its stop in Switzerland on the 12th November. Within Temptation already experienced two huge concert effects in the past (2014 and 2018).

Other talking points this week: Taylor Swift continues to do well with both, Anti-Hero (4-4) and Bejeweled (3-5). Meanwhile, Ilira’s success atop the charts only lasted for one week, as her Clean Break experiences a sudden dive this week (1-7). A bit more down the line, Come Alive (The Queens of the Bone Age Version) by The Cast of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, Season 4 keeps being a rather unexpected success and even rises back into the upper half of the chart (25-18). Lindsey Stirling and Amy Lee are two other winners this week, as their Love Goes On And On goes back up 32-27. Last but not least, just right before her Hold The Girl seems to be leaving the Top40 (34-39), Rina Sawayama collects a Platinum certification for the single. It’s her second song reaching that milestone following Lucid.

Tom Odell’s Flying is the biggest climber, while David Guetta, Morten & Raye’s You Can’t Change Me drops 12-35 as the biggest loser this week.

Album Top20

For a fourth consecutive week in a row, Taylor Swift remains on top of the album charts with her tenth studio album Midnights. This makes the album already tied with Eye Of Melian’s Legends Of Light as the second longest running number one album of the year, being only one week behind the compilation for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 now. Next week looks to be more competitive with one highly anticipated new release and a concert effect that will impact the chart, so Taylor’s reign may finally come to an end, at least for a moment. As for her own discography, Midnights already ties Folklore and Red (Taylor’s Version), also being just one week behind Speak Now that remains her longest chart topping album to date. However, Midnights is Taylor’s first album to spend its first four weeks atop the chart, as Folklore didn’t debut atop and Speak Now and Red (Taylor’s Version) returned back to the top during their chart runs.

Midnights’ impact continues to be exceptional, especially for Folklore, that already did well in the previous two weeks, but jumps back up 13-3 this time, giving the album its highest peak since 2020. Evermore keeps charting too and moves 18-17.

Completing the Top3 is Tom Odell, who not only has a surprise hit in his hands with the single Flying, but his fifth studio album also rises 9-2 to become his highest peaking album ever, moving past his second album Wrong Crowd (#3 in 2016).

New and re-entries this week: Following four postponements, the highly anticipated Worlds Collide Tour by female fronted Rock legends Within Temptation and Evanescence has finally started this week and it will also make its stop in Switzerland. A concert effect is expected to impact the chart next week, but Within Temptation’s latest album Resist already gets a rather big early boost by coming back to #4. The album was released in 2019, when it ended up second in the Year-End Charts.

Four new arrivals are in the Top20, though none of them makes a proper impact so far. The highest of these is by Louis Tomlinson, as the former One Direction member released his second album Faith In The Future that debuts at #9. His debut Walls peaked at #8 in early 2020. Just one spot below at #10 is Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo with his new set Thrill Of The Chase. It’s his fifth and third highest peaking chart entry to date. French singer Christine And The Queens makes it to #16 with her third album Redcar les adorables étoiles, while The Black Eyed Peas’ new set Elevation debuts at #18.

Other talking points this week: The trend continues that despite lots of new albums making the chart, many of them can’t hold up too well. From last week, only S10’s Ik Besta Voor Altijd Zolang Jij Aan Mij Denkt gets a great second week by just dipping 3-5, but I by Ofenbach (7-14) and Palomino by First Aid Kit (6-15) experience big drops, while Lo & Leduc’s Luft (ex #12), Alicia Keys’ Santa Baby (ex #15), Joji’s Smithereens (ex #17) and Le Fil’s Le Filosophical EP (ex #20) already depart the chart.

Bubbling Under

Taylor Swift continues to be her only competition on the Bubbling Under chart at the moment, as she also continues to outperform herself with each new week, as this time, she adds another two songs to the list and so Meghan Trainor’s Mama Wanna Mambo (6-9) is the only song left that isn’t by Taylor.

However unlike previous weeks, she doesn’t get a new top hit, as Midnights album opener Lavender Haze remains atop the list, also still being followed by Karma (2-2) and Vigilante Shit (3-3). Midnight Rain is starting to become a favorite on the worldwide charts and also rises 8-4 on this list, pushing Snow On The Beach with Lana Del Rey a bit down the chart (4-5). Maroon rises 7-6, Labyrinth is currently the only song that is decreasing rather fast (5-8), while Midnights deluxe edition album track Glitch sneaks in at #10. Finally, the ninth entry for Taylor is not from Midnights, but from Folklore, as August makes a rather surprising re-entry at #7.

Some honorable mentions go out to Sofia Reyez’ Luna, Galantis, David Guetta & MNEK’s Damn (You’ve Got Me Saying), Rihanna’s Born Again and Lapsley’s Hotel Corridors.

...and Revival was also her first album not being with Hollywood Records anymore, so that was why it finally got four singles. But yep, We Own The Night and My Dilemma were making circles for When The Sun Goes Down back then but nothing happened in the end, and I think Off The Chain for A Year Without Rain. Ah... speaking of which, defintiely an album I need to revisit, it's been a while.

Ha, alright, so Hollywood Records definitely deserves a lot of the blame for Disney girls' short/rushed eras Miley's eras kept being short/messy even after she left Hollywood, though, so there's gotta be more to the story with her, at least.

When The Sun Goes Down was the only full & The Scene album I checked out, but was A Year Without Rain your favorite?

Yep. But to be fair, someone has to make these Spotify playlists, right? So why are our own artists not getting more support? Even some new releases sometimes end up surprisingly low on the New Music Playlists even by bigger local acts. Some local acts already complained about that.

Hmmm...Spotify's based in Sweden, right? Can we blame the Swedes? I can understand younger folks (both the ones making these playlists and the ones listening to them) wanting to take a broader global approach/discover new artists from all over the world, but it shouldn't be so extreme that they completely neglect the local acts (who really rely on local support to get any exposure at all).

Fun thing is, besides We Found Love, I never cared for something Calvin related before I Need Your Love and that song was part of the reason why I fell so much in love with Ellie & Halcyon, so somehow I always associate the song more with Ellie and even Calvin's "career" on my charts is more due to Ellie's involvement.

Asking the question to you I didn't think it would be difficult, but now that you ask me I realize yep, it is. Anyways, sadly, I would put Lights as clearly the weakest of the four, simply because I never had much of a connection with it. I only checked it out after (and because of) falling in love with Halcyon. So for me it would be Halcyon > Delirium = (or slightly >) Brightest Blue > Lights. But yes, still remember that situation with Lights (the song) being such a late and slowburner in the US so well, that was so fascinating to follow.

Yeah, Calvin's always been more of a "singles artist" for me (he's had some big Paulboard hits, but never captivated me enough to explore a full album of his. Just good for the occasional bop - and thirst trap).

My heart aches seeing you put Lights last, but I've been in a similar situation with other artists (like Rina's debut EP, which I didn't check out until after I fell in love with SAWAYAMA. It's fine, but I don't feel any major attachment/enthusiasm for it, so I'd rank it well below her two proper albums).

With Snow On The Beach being served to some US radio stations I really thought about it for a while if that's enough to let it enter my main chart and then Taylor would've had the third #1 debut in a row. But - I need to be somewhat "fair" and so I didn't let my inner stan win But as you say, Ilira truly deserved her time to shine as I've been playing Clean Break like crazy for the past few weeks.

Nope, haven't seen the documentary yet, it's on my to do list! Have you already seen it? Also flop at you forgetting about a new Selena single But to be fair, it's a Selena single and only debuts at #30 for me so...

I think Midnights could actually end up as my most favorite Taylor album ever at this point. Love, love, love it (probably just until 1989 TV comes out though).

Mixed feelings honestly. I am looknig forward to it, but I don't want to be too hyped as I don't want to get disappointed yet again BUT... I finally picked up playing again after months, this time finally getting *really* into Legend Arceus + re-started UltraMoon. Would be a perfect opportunity to pick up the private messages again What about your hype level for the ninth generation?

How does Ultra Moon hit in 2022? What's your team? I just finished replaying Y (felt fitting for Fall, and another European-based game before we visit "Spain" in SV). I'm excited, but like you mentioned, I also need to keep my hype in check, since I recognize that the series is changing/evolving away from things that made me fall in love in the first place (forced EXP Share making it harder to use just a core team of 6 without getting way over-leveled, no more "Set" mode in battle, no more real-time clock with daily/weekly events, fewer buildings to explore/NPCs to interact with, fewer Trainers to battle, fewer side features like Contests or Festival Plaza, etc). In their efforts to streamline the games for modern gamers, they've cut a lot of things that helped me feel more immersed/engaged

• It's Tiësto's time to shine! Was "The Motto" his biggest hit on your chart (before "10:35")?
• Glad to see Ava score another Top 10, but it sounds like we're in the same position of feeling less impressed by all these recent singles compared to the H&H era. I can't explain why either, cause it's not like she switched up her sound that much, but these all feel more forgettable in comparison (not totally terrible or anything, just a step down)
• Is this acoustic-guitar sound something new for Kim? I read that it's her first single away from Dr. Luke, but I don't know her catalog enough to judge how drastic of a shift this song is (or isn't)
• Damn, is this just the SECOND official single from Denim & Rhinestones?! Was she busy having another kid or something...?
• Rina getting ahold of a beautiful Platinum cert

Not only did we not get a reason for the postponement, I was just issued a refund this week so looks like it's been officially cancelled. Jaida Essence Hall was also slated to have an M&G at a local bar, but cancelled last minute (replaced by LaLa Ri and Maddy Morphosis). November has been a meh month for me thus far.

Do you like "Hate My Heart"? For me, it's solid, as is even the worst 'Denim & Rhinestones' track, but I'd have wanted..."Wanted Woman"!

When The Sun Goes Down was the only full & The Scene album I checked out, but was A Year Without Rain your favorite?

Yes, definitely. Still even one of my most favorite albums of all time. It's just pure Disney Pop joy from start to finish. Definitely a recommendation if you'd ever have time (and desire) to check it out.

Hmmm...Spotify's based in Sweden, right? Can we blame the Swedes? I can understand younger folks (both the ones making these playlists and the ones listening to them) wanting to take a broader global approach/discover new artists from all over the world, but it shouldn't be so extreme that they completely neglect the local acts (who really rely on local support to get any exposure at all).

Yes, it's based in Sweden, but no idea how it really works, as I can't imagine someone in Sweden putting out playlists for every different country. Would actually be an interesting thing to find out how this really works, as there are different playlists with different artists for each country, so there's so much work behind all of this. The thing is, it's different in every country... some countries seems to show more love to their local artists than others.

Yeah, Calvin's always been more of a "singles artist" for me (he's had some big Paulboard hits, but never captivated me enough to explore a full album of his. Just good for the occasional bop - and thirst trap).

My heart aches seeing you put Lights last, but I've been in a similar situation with other artists (like Rina's debut EP, which I didn't check out until after I fell in love with SAWAYAMA. It's fine, but I don't feel any major attachment/enthusiasm for it, so I'd rank it well below her two proper albums).

• Glad to see Ava score another Top 10, but it sounds like we're in the same position of feeling less impressed by all these recent singles compared to the H&H era. I can't explain why either, cause it's not like she switched up her sound that much, but these all feel more forgettable in comparison (not totally terrible or anything, just a step down)
• Is this acoustic-guitar sound something new for Kim? I read that it's her first single away from Dr. Luke, but I don't know her catalog enough to judge how drastic of a shift this song is (or isn't)

It is! And yes, it was. The Motto, Hot In It (with Charli XCX) and 10:35 are his only entries for me so far. Did he already had a chart entry prior to The Motto for you?

It somehow drives me crazy because I really want to enjoy her singles a lot more, and I also do enjoy them, but they never have the same replay value or that "wow" effect her H&H singles had on me. Maybe it's just the simple fact that we love Pop music and it was refreshing to have an artist being so successful with pure Pop hits again when she came forward, and now we're back at having so many great Pop tunes being thrown at us so Ava doesn't stick out anymore. With that being said, I do think all three D&D singles sound very similar and that wasn't the case for the H&H singles. I'm truly worried for her.

Yes, Kim never did something like this previously, but it works well IMO. I'd really recommend her track Icy. She's more that pure Pop girl (basically a similar lane like Ava Max, Charli XCX' recent album, Tove Lo etc.)

Poor Carrie. But yeah, only the second single (though I always view She Don't Know as single too) and the long break between is even more weird considering the lead was her biggest flop in a while (or by far & ever just compared to all of her lead singles).

Finally - and her second together with Lucid. Two brilliant tunes for sure!!

Not only did we not get a reason for the postponement, I was just issued a refund this week so looks like it's been officially cancelled. Jaida Essence Hall was also slated to have an M&G at a local bar, but cancelled last minute (replaced by LaLa Ri and Maddy Morphosis). November has been a meh month for me thus far.

It's a good song, but far from my favorite one on Denim & Rhinestones. I still wish she would've pushed She Don't Know as a proper single - as you say, there are no weak songs on the album, however the title track, Velvet Heartbreak or Poor Everbody Else would be my personal choices for other singles.

Singles Top40

Finally after three years of waiting, the highly anticipated Worlds Collide Tour by Rock legends Within Temptation and Evanescence started and also made its stop in Switzerland. The concert has a huge impact on the chart this week, though none of the re-entries were strong enough to make it all the way to the Top3. New atop is the first of just four non concert related new entries with Joy To The World, the third single of Lindsey Stirling’s current album Snow Waltz. The song becomes Lindsey’s celebratory 40th chart entry and record extending 26th number one hit. The new release comes perfectly timed, as previous single Snow Waltz leaves the Top20 for its first time (14-23), while Love Goes On And On (with Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee) is also as low as never before (27-34).

Completing the Top3 are Tiësto & Tate McRae’s 10:35 (1-2) and Blackmore’s Night’s Shadow Of The Moon (2-3), both just dipping a spot each as they’re still going strong.

Concert effect: Even though both Evanescence and Within Temptation already scored several big chart hits in the past, Within Temptation were clearly the stronger not just charts wise in the past, but also at the actual concert with their staging, the setlist, and just the overall performance. The band already experienced two huge concert effects back in 2014 and 2018, and they can add a third now, as the band has an impressive 11 chart entries this week. The highest – The Reckoning – already charted prematurely last week and jumps 19-5 this time. It’s being joined in the Top10 by fellow Resist singles Supernova (#9) and Raise Your Banner (#10) plus their classic Mother Earth (#7) that was originally released in 2000. With Faster (#14), Ice Queen (#17) and All I Need (#19), some of their as classics seen songs make the upper half, while Paradise (What About Us?) (#29) and the more recent Don’t Pray For Me (#32) and The Purge (#38) are additional re-entries in the lower regions of the chart. The final and most odd re-entry goes to Mad World at #36, as the song wasn’t even part of their setlist but comes back nonetheless.

As for Evanescence, their setlist didn’t have all the hits and sadly, they were simply overshadowed by their peers that night. The band gets three entries, with Going Under (originally from 2003) being their highest as a new entry at #13, while My Immortal (#27) and Call Me When You’re Sober (#39) are re-entries.

Other new entries this week: Norwegian Eurovision trio Keiino finally return with a new single called Nights Of Thunder, that makes it all the way to #4. It may break their current streak of debuting in the Top3, but at least continues their streak of always making it to the Top10, as it’s already their 16th song to do so. German musicians Vize and Leony teamed up with Masked Wolf on a track called Love On The Line that debuts at #16. While being the very first notation for the latter, the first two already scored a bunch of entries, including the two #1s Raindrops (with Katja Krasavice) and Remedy for Leony. The fourth and final non concert related entry goes to former YouTube sensation Rebecca Black (Friday), who arrives at #22 with the surprising Pop smash Crumbs. It’s her second chart entry to date, as she already reached #8 with The Great Divide back in 2016.

Other talking points this week: Beyoncé’s Cuff It reaches Gold status (15-28), making it her very first certified single ever on her own, as her only other certified song is Telephone alongside Lady Gaga.

Within Temptation & Jacoby Shaddix own the biggest climber with The Reckoning, while Ellie Goulding’s Let It Die drops 20-40 as the biggest loser this week.

Album Top20

The concert effect for Evanescence and Within Temptation also has a big impact on the Album Top20 but despite putting up a good fight, it’s still Taylor Swift who remains in the lead for a fifth week in a row with Midnights. The album joins Speak Now as Taylor’s longest running top album now, though it’s her first to spend so many weeks on top consecutively. Midnights also gets certified with Gold this week, also continuing the streak of having all of her chart entries on the album charts being certified. Besides all that, Taylor has even more reasons to celebrate, as she keeps charting well with Folklore (3-4), Evermore celebrates its 50th charting week and therefore being tied with 1989 as her longest charting album ever by dipping 17-19, and she even owns a re-entry as Reputation makes a surprising comeback at #15.

As just mentioned, one album coming from the concert effect put up a good fight against Taylor and that was Within Temptation’s Resist, that already made an early comeback at #4 last week and rises to #2 this time. It’s their most recent studio album (2019), with Hydra (#6, originally from 2014) and The Heart Of Everything (#9, originally from 2007) being two more entries for the Dutch Symphonic Rock band this week. Meanwhile, Evanescence also score two comebacks, as their most recent The Bitter Truth makes it to #10 (from last year), while The Open Door is back at #16 (originally from 2006).

The highest non concert related debut completes the Top3 at #3 with 2001, the new studio album by German band Tokio Hotel. It’s their third chart entry to date following the top album Kings Of Suburbia (2014) and the #5 peaking Dream Machine (2017).

Other new entries this week: US Hard Rock band Disturbed released their new album Divisie and following Immortalized (#4 in 2016) and Evolution (#9 in 2018) it becomes their third Top10 entry by making it to #8. Alan Walker and Anna Bergendahl both make much less of an impact, as the former is new at #17 with his Walkerverse, Pt. II EP, while the latter just sneaks in at #20 with the Merry Christmas Everyone EP. Especially hard for Anna, as her only two previous chart entries (Yours Sincerely in 2010 and the Vera EP in 2020) both topped the album charts.

Other talking points this week: With the release of Joy To The World as its new single, Lindsey Stirling’s Snow Waltz also gets a new boost and jumps back into the Top10 (13-7). The album also gets certified with Gold this week.

Bubbling Under

The Bubbling Under chart is still being owned by Taylor Swift, who repeats her immense success for a fifth week in a row, with Lavender Haze topping the chart for its third consecutive week. It’s being followed by Karma also for a third week, though Midnight Rain continues to grow and completes the Top3 this time (4-3).

Labyrinth may be the first Midnights song to leave the list (ex #8), but with Vigilante Shit (3-4), Snow On The Beach with Lana Del Rey (5-5), Glitch (10-8) and Maroon (6-9), there are still a total of seven songs from the still reigning album on the chart. Additionally, while Folklore album track August made an unexpected comeback last week (ex #7), it’s Reputation album track Don’t Blame Me that joins the list at #6 as a rather random new entry. The song would’ve been easily a top hit back in 2017 if the Bubbling Under chart would have existed back then.

The chart is being completed by two new entries with Drag Race UK star Black Peppa’s debut single Why Is She Calling? at #7 and Babymetal’s Monochrome at #10. Noah Cyrus & PJ Harding’s Snow In LA, Lauren Spencer-Smith’s Single On The 25th, and Alan Walker & Upsahl’s Shut Up were other new entries on the shortlist, but eventually failed to enter any chart this week.

Glad to see another chart here on ukmix with Rebecca's 'Crumbs', I've liked some of her stuff in the last couple of years but don't think anything she released was this good.

Crumbs is really good, I hope she gets more attention with this. I'm also really looking forward to her upcoming album next year, as Crumbs keeps growing for me and she's really giving me so much Pop potential.
