  • Tansike's Year-End Charts 2021 [Mammy Awards 2022]

Welcome to my Year-End Charts 2021!

As every year, I will proudly present you the most successful singles and albums from my weekly Singles Top40 & Album Top20 plus the annual Mammy Awards. The countdowns will start soon - singles will be presented first, followed by albums, while the Mammy Awards 2022 will close this topic next year.

As usual with my charts, this Year-End Charts is based on points: a weekly #1 gets 40 points (single) / 20 points (album), a weekly #2 gets 39 points (single) / 19 points (album) and so on. These points are all added up and the result is this countdown. Additionally, if a song or an album already made its debut on my weekly charts in 2020, its points for the countdown are reduced by 10%, if it made its debut in 2019, its points are reduced by 20% and so on, up to having made its debut in 2012 or earlier and getting the points reduced by 90%. This way old releases won't take too much space, since this countdown should be for the year 2021.

Speaking of the year... what a crazy year - yet again! We are still in the midst of the pandemic, which took us all by surprise and was already a hot topic for the annual reviews 2020. I think not many people thought that the situation would still be similar a year later, but we all got to learn how to live in such a surreal time. Personally, 2021 was an eventful year as well, as I just turned 30 four days ago, got engaged three months ago and reached some goals in social life but also at work. Musically, 2021 seems to be an underrated year, as it had so many great moments and somehow many of them didn't even happen in the mainstream. We had some huge Pop moments in 2021, the Eurovision Song Contest happened after a one year break and made a huge impact on my weekly charts, Pop culture phenomenon RuPaul's Drag Race was as successful as never before even with its music, while my heart obviously still beats for the Rock genre as well.

So as usual, this countdown will be a mixture of many things and I would like to already thank everyone who follows this - Have fun, enjoy, and stay healthy

      Is "Strong" gonna win this?

I'll be keenly following, of course!
Your Billboard Top Ten: #1 Kill Bill [2 weeks]
AlbumClash 2.0: [RAYE vs. Miley Cyrus]
Rina Sawayama: Hold the Girl Album Survivor [R5 --> 最終ラウンド]

It occurs to me that Jude does this too, changes who she is depending on who she’s with. They’re like toads changing their skin colour. How come I’m always just me?

437 different songs made my weekly Singles Top40 in the past 52 weeks. That's four songs less compared to the previous year. 2019 holds the record with 465 different songs on my weekly charts.

179 different albums made my weekly Album Top20 in the past 52 weeks, being seven less than last year. 2018 set the record for albums with 205 different entries on the weekly charts.

The weekly charts proved to be very diverse in 2021. While the singles charts didn't have that one big standout in 2021 compared to many other years, there were still nearly the same amount of songs getting Gold or Platinum certifications. It's a bit different for albums, as there were more standouts on the album charts this year, resulting in the most Platinum certified albums since 2016!

              First update is coming soon!

Australian rapstress Iggy Azalea opens the countdown with I Am The Stripclub, an EDM banger meets Rap meets the messiness that is Iggy and I was here for it.

…and Iggy again! Her latest and also last album The End Of An Era dropped in 2021 and was honestly pretty good, as Sex On The Beach proves as well. A fun, breezy, fresh Summer bop, that goes straight into your ears. If none of her singles from 2021 did something, I really don’t know what else she could do to get back on the charts.

Anne-Marie and Little Mix are both two artists where we can expect a fun Pop song to bop to, and they definitely didn’t disappoint with Kiss My (Uh Oh). I also really like the sample of Lumidee’s Never Leave You. The effect of this wore off rather quickly though, but that seems to be the case with many fun Pop songs.

When Demi Lovato finally released their album Dancing With The Devil, Met Him Last Night immediately turned into what felt like a promising, big hit. There were even plans for a video. Somehow, negative headlines overshadowed everything and people lost interest into the track again… and nothing happened ever since. Definitely a wasted opportunity to push this, and especially since Demi has been struggling to score hits lately, I think this was their best chance to do so. But hey, a remix of the song is nominated for a Grammy Award next year, so there’s at least that.

This is Ariana’s only appearance on the countdown this year.

Don’t Go Yet was a fun Pop song perfectly for Summer, and I’m still surprised this wasn’t a bigger hit for her. No idea what happened behind the curtain, but I really thought this should have been the lead single to her third solo album and they should’ve pushed it way more than they did.

Vanessa Mai released her fifth solo album Mai Tai in early 2021 where Landebahn served as its fifth and final single. Having called her the Schlager-Pop princess up until last year, I think Landebahn proves that she’s as far away from Schlager as never before, as this sounds like a typical German-Pop song you would hear on the radio over here. I’m still surprised this didn’t even reach the German Charts – as while I see that it’s not the most creative song, I still think they both did a great job and I’ve had a soft spot for this.

Going into 2021, Anne-Marie had to prove that she won’t be one of many female singers from the UK who suffer from the second album curse aka doing extremely well with the debut, but flopping afterwards. Don’t Play was therefor a great start, as it peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Charts and was in fact a little banger.

Antiguan-German singer-songwriter Au/Ra is still mostly known for being featured on several songs by other artists such as Alan Walker or Jax Jones, even though she also released several great songs on her own. In 2021, she finally released her debut album where Screw Feelings served as a single and this was yet another serve. Great tune, very Alt Pop that’s probably a bit more on the Pop side.

Being part of the fantastic series that was RuPaul’s Drag Race UK: Season 2 which aired in early 2021, Tia Kofi also turned into a real music star as she released a bunch of singles and even an EP. I Want It All was her second Top10 hit on my weekly charts and highest song to appear on my Year-End Charts, being a fun, catchy Dance-Pop tune.

Love (Sweet Love) was released as the lead single to the best of compilation Between Us, and Little Mix proved once again and they’re reliable hit makers. I think Love (Sweet Love) is among their better singles, but they have even more entries to come on the countdown.

The big winner for me on this first ten is Don't Go Yet - I thought it was a pretty cool experimental release from Camila, but it didn't seem to pay off on the charts. Perhaps she's dipped too often to the Latin-vibe well and people are moving on, idk

As for your bubbling under, they mostly deserve to be there. I enjoyed most of these for a hot minute. Though I am sad that Skate and Driver's License are that low.

We feel similarly about "Kiss My (Uh Oh)". "Met Him Last Night" is good and might've very well have fared decently, just given Ari's star power, but I actually think "Melon Cake" had the biggest hit potential from the album and...it didn't stick.

"Don't Go Yet" probably got "Crying in the Club[ed]". There's so much good stuff going on with its instrumentation - certainly one of her better songs.

I was unimpressed by "Love (Sweet Love)".

Some good ones in the bubbling under batch!

good songs. Nice to see some Barbara Pravi love, she's my biggest discovery from Eurovision, I went back down her discography on Spotify and enjoyed so much.

Little Mix had a strong 12 months.

Don’t Go Yet and I Am The Stripclub bopped.

Love that you’ve charted Tia’s cover of a song made up for a fake girl group member on Celebrity Big Brother 15 years ago

A strong start, I really like the efforts by Anne-Marie, Little Mix and Camila. The actual collab between the first two is cute, does a job, but is less substantial to me. I Love (Sweet Love) a lot though ha,

Foxes and Years & Years in your bubbling under are so low!

As for your bubbling under, they mostly deserve to be there. I enjoyed most of these for a hot minute. Though I am sad that Skate and Driver's License are that low.

Agreed on Camila's track. I really enjoyed it as well (looking back at its chartrun on my weekly charts, I was surprised how quickly it fell out. Thought it did better ). I don't even think she dipped too often to the Latin-vibe and even if she did, Don't Go Yet was still somehow different than Havana for example.

Glad you agree on some Bubbling Under spots - gotta admit I never fully warmed up to Drivers License.

"Don't Go Yet" probably got "Crying in the Club[ed]". There's so much good stuff going on with its instrumentation - certainly one of her better songs.

I was unimpressed by "Love (Sweet Love)".

Some good ones in the bubbling under batch!

                                          Spoiler!
Cool that we both had our fun moments with Kiss My (Uh Oh) It somehow reminds me of Ava Max' discography.
Melon Cake was cute, I agree there... somehow I forgot that she also released a video for that one.

I hate when songs I really enjoy get promo'ed... Crying In The Club was also among Camila's best IMO. Ariana's Focus comes to my mind as well.

Oh really? Well... Little Mix have more to come, maybe you will like that song(s).

Glad you enjoy some stuff in the Bubbling Unders as well

Barbara Pravi's whole album was pretty good. She's one of the few artists who works better on a whole album than on singles for me. Definitely a pleasing result seeing someone like her coming in second at the contest.

I was worried you wouldn't highlight Iggy haha. Somehow I Am The Stripclub has been stuck in my head again for the past two days

True! IMO ever since Sweet Melody they've been on such a high, so I'm a bit sad they will go on a break next year, but I still totally understand their decision.

                                                True bops
