Honestly This Is Our Country was somewhat of an unexpected winner to me, as I thought the other two are the stronger contenders at first. But then I realized how much of an impact the Drag Race franchise had during 2021, so that gave This Is Our Country the final edge over the other two.

Very glad you're enjoying several winners! <3

The Mammy for Song Of The Year goes to This Is Our Country by RuPaul & Tanya Tucker, and the four finalists of the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, All Stars. The Drag Race franchise has been massive over the last few years and scored several chart hits, but This Is Our Country is their very first nomination and now also the winner of a big category, further proving its huge impact.

    Artist Of The Year

    Blackmore’s Night

The Mammy for Album Of The Year and Artist Of The Year go to Blackmore’s Night and their album Nature’s Light. Being released earlier in 2021, the album held up well through the whole year and also ended up as the biggest hit for the Renaissance band ever. Additionally, Blackmore’s Night also did well with their To The Moon And Back best of, the Winter Carols album and a bunch of singles during the whole year. These are their first Mammy wins ever, they are also nominated in three more categories to come.

Demons Are A Girl’s Best Friend by Powerwolf feat. Alissa White-Gluz

The Mammy for Best Rock/Alternative Recording goes to Demons Are A Girl’s Best Friend by Powerwolf feat. Alissa White-Gluz. It’s been a very close call, as fellow nominee Strong by Anette Olzon has been a huge standout in 2021 as well - though this category is often times one of the more competitive ones anyways. This marks the first victory for both, though Alissa White-Gluz was already nominated for Song Of The Year alongside Tarja back in 2017.
    .
    Best Rock/Alternative Album

    Strong by Anette Olzon

The Mammy for Best Rock/Alternative Album goes to Strong by Anette Olzon. The Swedish singer has a lot of history with the Mammy Awards, as she was already nominated in a category back in 2011. This is already her sixth win in total, including one for Album Of The Year back in 2015.

    .

    Best Live Act

    Nightwish

The Mammy for Best Live Act goes to Nightwish. There were no nominations in this category as all concerts were cancelled during 2021 due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, but Nightwish still had a very big impact on the daily life through their live videos on YouTube plus through the fantastic virtual live show they played during Spring 2021, letting them to get this award.
    .
    Best New Artist

    Agnes

The Mammy for Best New Artist goes to Agnes. This gives the Swedish singer a perfect year, as she also won Best Electronic/Dance Album as her only other category where she was nominated in.
    .
    Best Airplay Artist

    Nightwish

The Mammy for Best Airplay Artist goes to Nightwish. Even though the band released no new music during 2021, they still made a huge impact and were played all over 2021. Their last album HUMAN. :||: NATURE. also topped the Year-End Charts 2021 for a second year in a row due to this. Overall, this is Nightwish’s 12th Mammy Award ever, making them tied with Ariana Grande and Lindsey Stirling for the most wins ever - though Nightwish got nominated for only 22 times so far, while Ariana got 31 nominations and Lindsey 41.

The Mammy Awards are an annual award ceremony I've started many years ago. The word Mammy comes from Grammy, and my first name starts with a M.

There are currently a total of 20 different categories:
    Spoiler!

I will reveal the nominees very soon due to the delay and they are heavily based on my weekly charts, with winners being chosen by their impacts on my daily life in the previous year.

This is all fun and the winners are chosen by me, but you all can obviously guess the winners, leave your thoughts about it or comment what nominee would be your favorite.

Every year, the Eurovision Song Contest is not only the biggest music show in the world, but its compilation and most of its entries also always set my weekly charts on fire. The compilation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 ended up as an underperformance in comparison to other compilations, reaching #21 on the Year-End Charts 2020 - but mostly because the contest itself had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. So after that, all eyes were on the 2021 contest and it truly didn’t disappoint!

The hype going into the Eurovision season of 2021 was huge, as several entries already started to chart and even do well on the weekly charts weeks, in some cases even months prior the actual contest, something that never happened to that extent and in the end, 2021 ended up as record breaking - the compilation itself became the most successful compilation of all time with 271 chart points; all of its entries scored a total of 4,163 chart points on the singles charts, easily beating the previous record of 3,309 chart points from 2019; and the 2021 compilation also ties the 2019 compilation as the highest peaking compilation on a Year-End Charts ever.

From 39 participating countries, 30 charted on the weekly singles charts. 12 of these also reached the Top100 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021 with Blind Channel’s Dark Side (#82, Finland), Hooverphonic’s The Wrong Place (#81, Belgium), Stefania’s Last Dance (#78, Greece), Roxen’s Amnesia (#74, Romania), Senhit’s Adrenalina (#65, San Marino), Gjon’s Tears’ Tout l’univers (#37, Switzerland), Efendi’s Mata Hari (#33, Azerbaijan), Eden’s Set Me Free (#32, Israel), Montaigne’s Technicolour (#13, Australia), Destiny’s Je me casse (#8, Malta), Elena Tsagrinou’s El diablo (#7, Cyprus) and last but not least also Go_A’s Shum (Шум), the actual #1 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021 from Ukraine.

Probably an album that’s already been rather forgotten but actually made a huge impact during the first half of 2021 is The Bitter Truth, the extremely long awaited fifth studio album by Evanescence! While the band returned to the music scene with Synthesis already in late 2017, it wasn’t a fully new album and contained some of their more known songs but re-recorded with an orchestra, so The Bitter Truth is actually the band’s first full new release in over ten years, as it theoretically follows up their self-titled album from 2011. If people used to be fans of Evanescence, they keep being so these days, as the band doesn’t change much about their formula and honestly, why trying to fix something that’s still good? The Bitter Truth continues their quality over quantity line and while it’s typical Evanescence, it still fit well into 2021. The Bitter Truth also becomes the band’s highest entry on a Year-End Charts, surpassing self-titled that reached #10 in 2011.

The Game Is Over (#430), Use My Voice (#340), Yeah Right (#69) and Better Without You (#23) were the official singles for this album and all charted on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021, though the first three were all already released in 2020 and therefore didn’t show the best results. My choice for the best song on the whole album would be Far From Heaven.

Ranking in the YEC 2020: #20

The All Out EP by virtual K-Pop group K/DA has already been a surprise success in late 2020, where it topped the weekly album chart for two weeks and ended up at #20 on the Year-End Charts 2020. Even more impressive was how the EP stayed on the weekly chart for most of 2021 as well and simply refused to leave or die down, despite not having any support from mainstream media - but I just kept going back to the EP. Even though K/DA is associated with the game League Of Legends that I never played so far, their music still hit me in a completely unexpected way and this whole EP has been my workout music for many weeks. Every song is a banger and since the EP is rather short, it was also perfect as something to go back to when I didn’t know what else to listen to. Gamer music meets K-Pop meets Dance Pop, including some interesting features such as Kim Petras or Madison Beer.

Despite being released in 2020, More (#223) and especially The Baddest (#10) still did well in 2021 and entered the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. Drum Go Dum and Villain are fantastic tunes and my other choices for highlights. And I still hope they decide to release more songs with this project, it’s too good to let it go after just this EP.

…and not the most successful album during 2021, but of 2021 goes to Nature’s Light by Blackmore’s Night!! The Medieval Folk band released their eleventh studio album in 2021, a record that was extremely anticipated by myself as by the time this got released, it’s been five and a half years since the band released their previous studio album! The band was formed by Richie Blackmore, a founding member of Deep Purple and often times deemed as one of the greatest and most influential guitar players of all time, and Candice Night, a vocalist, Richie’s wife and somewhat the heart of the band. Their sound is often times a very traditional, rather oldschool approach of the medieval music, kinda what you would expect in a medieval festival, and they also always perform in these occasions and are always clothed in that style. And yes, my heart has a huge soft spot for this music, where Blackmore’s Night ticks a lot of boxes and are actually among my most favorite artists of all time. They also mix this style up with a lot of other genres on their albums, therefore serving enough variety too.

Even though their debut album Shadow Of The Moon was already released back in 1997, where it already reached #25 on the official German Album Charts, Nature’s Light actually scored the best chart peaks ever for the band in the German speaking countries, reaching #7 in Germany, #14 in Austria, and #22 in Switzerland, and additionally, also becoming their biggest hit ever on My Charts. A huge thing for me as a big fan and for a band that is so far from the sound you would expect on the charts. Nature’s Light proved to have amazing longevity, as it’s short enough to be replayed whenever I wanted to, and it also became one of my go to albums when I wouldn’t know what to listen to. This uplifting medieval sound just keeps making me happy.

The album spawned four singles, with only the title track Nature’s Light failing to really stand out, having reached #197 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. Four Winds (#17), Second Element (#16) and Once Upon December (#12) all reached the Top20. Feather In The Wind is my personal star on this album, being one of my personal best songs released in 2021 overall.

…and the most successful album of 2020 2021 is HUMAN. :||: NATURE. by Nightwish!

The album makes the impossible possible and becomes the very first album ever to top the Year-End Charts twice in a row AND the first album ever to chart in all of the 52 weeks in a single calendar year! I guess at this point I don’t need to explain Nightwish much further, as they have been my most favorite band ever since discovering them in around 2004 and also being among my most favorite artists overall during these nearly two decades now. The Symphonic Metal band are the pioneers of their genre and have been successful all around the world for nearly two decades as well, having gathered a whole new fanbase in the last few years due to tons of music reaction videos on YouTube. HUMAN. :||: NATURE. served as the bands ninth studio album and second with Floor Jansen as their phenomenal lead singer.

With each new album, Nightwish has been evolving their sound and I think they really mastered it with HUMAN. :||: NATURE.. As the title suggest, the theme is humanity and nature, with all of its beauty and flaws. Symphonic Metal is a known sub-genre in the Metal genre, with several bands being part of that, and HUMAN. :||: NATURE. is one of the most Symphonic Metal sounding albums I have ever heard.

The album has two parts, the first being the regular album, and the second being called All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World, basically 30 minutes of instrumental songs split in eight chapters that work absolutely perfectly while taking a walk in the forest and just to calm down. While I don’t use the second half as often as I listen to the regular album, I still think this as a whole is Nightwish’s most cohesive record to date, and it’s honestly near perfection for me.

HUMAN. :||: NATURE. spawned three singles with Noise, Harvest and How’s The Heart?, though none of them charted in 2021, making this top position for the album itself even more impressive. Noise however topped the Singles Year-End Charts of 2020, while the other two charted at #47 and #45 respectively. As mentioned, this is the first time an album tops the countdown for a second year and it’s worth a shoutout that HUMAN. :||: NATURE. already made Nightwish the very first artist to top the Year-End Charts more than once last year, as they already did so with Endless Forms Most Beautiful in 2015. They also made the Top10 in 2011 with Walking In The Air – The Greatest Ballads (#4) and in 2012 with Imaginaerum (#2).

Despite the fact that all songs a near to perfection, the album still has some clear personal standouts that are album opener Music, the lead single Noise, the epic Shoemaker, and the hymn Pan.

Following a surprisingly appealing debut album, I was very excited when Auri announced a second album in 2021 with II - Those We Don’t Speak Of. Auri is a project by Johanna Kurkela, Finnish musician and vocalist for the project, Tuomas Holopainen, famous for being the mastermind behind Finnish Symphonic Metal legends Nightwish and Johanna’s husband, and Troy Donockley, English multi-instrumentalist and fellow Nightwish band member. Despite the heavy Nightwish connections, Auri’s music has nothing to do with the Metal genre, it’s difficult to put the trio in a genre box, but progressive Folk describes them the best, while Tuomas himself called Auri’s music „rabbit hole music and celestial metal with influences from Folk music, Celtic music, and soundtracks“. It’s surely not everybody’s cup of tea, but also rewards you when you give it a chance and time. It’s been a similar success like their self-titled debut album, that reached #9 on the Year-End Charts 2018.

The album spawned three singles with Kiss The Mountain (#230 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021), Pearl Diving (#83) and The Valley (#66). Though these are actually among my least favorite songs on the record, as my personal highlights are Light And Flood, The Long Walk and especially Scattered To The Four Winds.

2020 saw the release of some huge albums, as four of them made it all the way to the Top10 on the Year-End Charts 2021, with Miss Anthropocene by Grimes being the first of them. The Canadian mastermind already released this record in early 2020, where the album also reached #3 on the Year-End Charts. The album carried a lot of its success into 2021 as well, not only showing immense longevity on my weekly charts, but also having turned into one of my most favorite albums of all time. What I love most about this album is, that every time when I just want to visit one or two album tracks, I end up listening to the whole record again as it’s just so good as a whole and I seem to never get tired of it. Here’s to hope we may finally get a follow-up soon, if not in 2022 anymore then surely in 2023.

Violence with i_o made a short re-appearance on the weekly charts and ended up #341 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021 as the only single of this record to do so, though that’s obviously no surprise as Grimes didn’t release more singles from that record after 2020. That plus We Appreciate Power, So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth, New Gods and Before The Fever remain my favorites.

Ranking in the YEC 2020: #90

Following Folklore (#78), Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (#28) and Red (Taylor’s Version) (#14), Taylor Swift’s fourth and final appearance on the Album Year-End Charts 2021 is Evermore, her second surprise album from 2020, and sister record to Folklore. Being released in late 2020, Evermore already made a short appearance on the charts then and takes a huge leap on the Year-End Charts 2021. As of the date this is being posted (early october 2022), Evermore is actually also nearly as high on the current Year-To-Date Charts 2022, as it already charted for another 17 weeks in the current year, further proving its longevity and its slowly but steadily growing status as a true evergreen in her discography.

Evermore is yet another side from Taylor that works perfectly well with her and also within her discography. While most people raved about its sister record Folklore, personally I connected way more with Evermore and there’s not even one weak song or let alone just a solid one. Lyrically and sonically a fantastic record from start to finish, that also fits incredibly well into the colder times of the year. Additionally, the album cover is also my most favorite one from Taylor ever, as I simply connect to these autumn themed stuff.

With Willow, Evermore had only one proper single that reached #49 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. No Body, No Crime is my favorite on this record and it’s a true crime indeed how they never tried to push it as a proper single, as it’s definitely having the most single potential and could have been a nice hit.

Swedish singer Anette Olzon is no stranger to my weekly charts, as she already proved to be extremely popular as the second frontwoman to Symphonic Metal pioneers Nightwish, with whom she released the two albums Dark Passion Play (2007) and Imaginaerum (2011). Following her departure, Anette released her solo debut album Shine in early 2014, that became the most successful album of all time in the My Charts history and has reached #1 on the Year-End Charts 2014, #3 in 2015 and #10 in 2016, being the only album to have made the Top10 in three different years. While Shine saw her going into a new, softer musical direction, Anette started to develop her own sound with the project The Dark Element, their self-titled debut album also reached #4 on the Year-End Charts 2018. Strong follows that new found sound, which is best described as ABBA meets Symphonic Metal. Heavily infectious Rock tunes that just go straight into your ears, though some of them may lack some inspiration if compared to the aforementioned Shine.

Fantastic Fanatic (#46), Parasite (#40), Sick Of You (#35) and title track Strong (#6) all served as singles and reached the Top40 on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. While the title track is also my own highlight on this album, Hear Them Roar and Bye Bye Bye are another two standouts.

Here’s probably the most under-appreciated mainstream release of 2021: If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, the fourth studio album by Halsey. Its release was a true event, with no single releases prior the album came out, several high profile visuals, a striking album cover, and lots of thoughts behind the whole body of work. And this truly is a whole body of work, being easily Halsey’s most cohesive album to date. At least she finally got some Grammy love for this, despite not winning the award she was nominated for, but I really think Halsey deserved way more love for this album, where she really found a sound that feels very true to her. Its genre is described as somewhere between Alternative Rock, Grunge-Pop, Pop Punk, Rock and with heavy Industrial influences - though truth be told, it’s obviously still mainly a Pop record.

While Halsey had a rocky start for me personally, with debut album Badlands only reaching #70 on the Year-End Charts 2015, her sophomore album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (#3 in 2017) and third set Manic (#5 in 2020) both ended up as huge successes, with If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power being her third Top10 finish on a Year-End Charts now. And even though it lands one spot below Manic, it actually has even more points also despite its later release in the year.

Sadly, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power only produced one proper single with I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God, though it did extremely well and ended up as the runner-up on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. It’s also my favorite song on the album alongside The Tradition and Girl Is A Gun.

Following the longest week in the history of mankind, I will finally wrap this up with the Top10 for albums coming up shortly, then followed by Mammy 2022 nominees later this week + their winners shortly after.

Gotta be ready for the soon to be started Year-End Charts 2022

Chemtrails... is okay, but far off from the awesomeness of its predecessor.

Planet Her is without filler for me! I enjoyed Happier Than Ever and felt that in every way it was more accessible than her previous album.
At first I was thinking the same about Demi's album, but then I tried to think what songs they could've axed and I had no idea, because to me all songs make sense as a whole. But I was probably in the minority with these feelings

As long as the music's good, the genre is not that important, right? Anyways, I still think they should've kept it in the Country categories and with that, her chances to get (a) Grammy(s) would've been way higher. Agreed about the lyrics!

Well, again an album where I'm in the minority with my feelings because Norman F-g Rockwell is among my less favorite albums from Lana. Still good though, she has yet to release an album that's just "solid" or bad.

Yes!! And she even hit #1 in several countries with it, what a huge and well deserved achievement!

I think I agree with you there. There are some obvious standouts, but Planet Her still flows well as a whole. Glad you think so about Happier Than Ever. Doja and Billie are definitely two artists who are here to stay!

Katja Krasavice is definitely one of the most successful artists of 2021, as with Alles schon gesehen (#63), Raindrops with Leony (#44), Friendzone (#29) and Highway with Elif (#20), the German singer placed four songs on the Singles Year-End Charts 2021. Eure Mami is her second studio album, was released already back in February 2020 and with three weeks at #1, it’s also tied with two other albums as the third longest running album of the year (coincidentally, the other two albums are in this update as well). Katja is definitely someone for the don’t judge a book by its cover phrase, as despite not being the greatest singer, she’s actually such a lovable person and knows exactly how to market herself. German Rap / R&B with some sprinkles of Pop, paired with Katja’s colourfulnessness. Her third album Pussy Power is going to be released very soon (11th February 2022) and may be another success.

Following Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (#28) on the main countdown and Folklore (#75) on the Bubbling Under updates, Red (Taylor’s Version) is already Taylor’s third but still not last appearance on the Year-End Charts 2021. Her second re-recorded album has been a massive and totally unexpected success for me, because I’ve always rated the original Red album as one of her weakest albums to date, but this re-release changed that. Since its release, there hasn’t been a week when I didn’t play this at least once from start to finish, which says a lot considering it takes over two hours to play the whole thing. There were never doubts that Taylor is a superstar, but Red (Taylor’s Version) is definitely one of the reasons why 2021 was her year yet again and there’s currently no one out there who does it like her.

Dutch Symphonic Metal band Epica were no strangers to me when they released Omega, their eighth studio album. The band is from a genre that is responsible for my two most favorite bands ever, Nightwish and Within Temptation. So despite all that, prior to Omega’s release, nothing by the band fully clicked with me, with Epica Vs. Attack On Titan Songs having been their biggest success to date with its #41 spot on the Year-End Charts 2018. Omega was mainly driven by the epic single Rivers (#15 on the Year-End Charts 2021) and is a strong Symphonic Metal record. It will be exciting to see if a follow-up can get me this much as well or if this was just a lucky shot – hopefully the former!

So back in 2020, I really thought Hot Pink would be Doja Cat’s breakthrough all around the globe, but I guess it was just her breakthrough in the English speaking countries and its follow-up Planet Her finally catapulted Doja Cat into a global phenomenon in 2021. A perfect mash-up of R&B meets Rap meets Pop, including some elements of Dance, Reggae and other genres. Doja definitely found her own sound and continues on Planet Her what she already did very well on Hot Pink. An album that’s easy to listen to as a whole, but it still offers some shining moments as well.

The year-end stats for Planet Her are very similar to Hot Pink, which ended up at #13 on the Year-End Charts 2020 with just five points less.

Just missing out on the Top10 is Happier Than Ever, the highly anticipated second studio album by Billie Eilish, and that only shows how strong the best albums of the year were, as with 171 points, Billie would’ve reached the Top10 of the countdown in the past five years.

I may be in the minority here but Happier Than Ever is pretty clearly the better of the two Billie albums for me personally, I just think the level of this feels higher than for When We All Fall Asleep. Her debut may have had some awesome standouts, but also some clear fillers. Happier Than Ever isn’t flawless from start to finish either, but even the weaker songs offer a nice atmosphere and don’t stand out too much in comparison. Following Katja Krasavice’s Eure Mami and Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version), Happier Than Ever is the third of the three tied albums with the third most weeks atop the weekly album charts.

American singer-songwriter Yebba released her debut album Dawn last Fall and this record was long overdue and has a special place in my heart, because it was released around the time when my partner and I got engaged, and, coincidentally, one of the first things he has shown me when we started to date was a live clip of Yebba singing My Mind. She was also featured on albums by Sam Smith, Mark Ronson, Ed Sheeran and Drake in the last few years, so she really started to build her name. Besides the personal attachment to her, Yebba is a phenomenal singer, has some strong lyrics, and her Neo Jazz meets R&B meets Pop meets Soul and Gospel is definitely a sound that I’ve grown to appreciate a lot lately, so this definitely met all the expectations. Oh, and I really think she some sort of delivered the better Adele album of 2021.

As a fan of Rock music and the charts, especially from German speaking countries, I knew that Powerwolf was a really successful Power Metal band from Germany, but only checked them out for the first time in 2021, when they released their eighth album Call Of The Wild. It was a cool coincidence how my brother spoke about the band and my mom was raving about one of their compilations from 2020 just a few weeks prior Call Of The Wild’s release, so I just had to check this out and I ended up being positively surprised. I’m usually more into the female fronted stuff from this genre, but Powerwolf did such a great job with Call Of The Wild and they easily outdo several other male fronted bands that I’ve heard, such as Sabaton. With Demons Are A Girls Best Friend feat. Alissa White-Gluz, they’re also responsible for one of the best songs of 2021 (#5 on the Year-End Charts).

Demi Lovato’s seventh studio album is a great Pop album that feels under appreciated and unfortunately also already kinda forgotten. While this album contains a big amount of songs and has a length of over an hour (probably depends on which of the many versions one got), I still think they delivered from start to finish and created one of the most solid Pop efforts of 2021. The only thing I could argue about is that a hit single like Cool For The Summer, Heart Attack or a banger like Kingdom Come is missing. But other than that, this doesn’t have to hide in their discography and should’ve continued their Gold certified albums streak in the US.

Another album that felt extremely short lived on the official charts is Kacey Musgraves’ Star-crossed. I think 2021 was the year of many great and also critically acclaimed albums that didn’t show any longevity, which is probably also why I feel less and less attached to the official charts all around the globe. Anyways, Golden Hour was so acclaimed by everyone, I must admit it never fully clicked with me and Star-crossed quickly surpassed that album for me personally. Is it Country? No. Does it matter? No, not at all – it’s just such a beautifully crafted album and I can’t wait for what’s next.

It’s already been over a decade when Lana Del Rey released her major label debut album Born To Die and truly dominated the charts with it and its singles. Many years later, the singer has maintained a big fanbase, keeps releasing high profile albums and also still does well on the charts. With that being said, while Lana has yet to release a bad or even just weak song, her albums offer no surprises anymore these days and while they’re still extraordinary, they still don’t get me into the same exciting state like her first few albums did.

No surprise seeing your love for Spaceman here - I'm still baffled this wasn't a (much) bigger success / era for him.

Oh yes, I never listened to Californian Soil on an early morning walk but that sounds like a perfect match! Same here for Taylor... well, she only became successful through that era over here and I still remember so well how and where I bought the Platinum edition of Fearless <3 You Belong With Me will always be among her best ones ever!

Plastic Hearts was another era cut short... I just can't with Miley only releasing like two singles of her albums, even when there's so much potential left. I just hope she comes back soon-ish. Glad you enjoyed Magic Still Exists so much as well

The first of just five albums that were already released in 2020 but still did well enough in 2021 to appear on the countdown is Plastic Hearts by Miley Cyrus. This felt like Miley’s redemption, after pretty much flopping with her previous album Younger Now, as Plastic Hearts ended up as a nice success all around the world and this really felt like she finally found the sound that works the best for her. Only thing that worried me was yet again too few singles though, the era was cut short yet again.

Another redemption went to Vanessa Mai. Following the two Gold certified Regenbogen (#32 on the Year-End Charts 2017) and Schlager (#13 on the Year-End Charts 2018), Vanessa bombed completely with Für immer last year (only #79). Mai Tai is a return to form for the German Schlager-Pop princess and similar to previous works, this is more of a (Dance-)Pop album than a Schlager album. Of course there are also some fillers on this, but overall it’s a great album. Not releasing Morgenlicht was a wasted opportunity though.

Her previous album So Good ended up at #1 on the Year-End Charts 2017, but even through the many singles that were released prior Poster Girl’s drop, it was already clear that her sophomore album wouldn’t be as good. Is it still a good album though? Of course! Funny thing is that back in 2017 when Zara released So Good around the same time as Dua Lipa dropped her debut, I really thought Zara would get the career Dua Lipa has now… I was so wrong!

    22. Little Mix – Between Us

With four entries on the singles countdown it’s definitely no surprise to see Little Mix also appearing on the albums countdown. Between Us is the first best of compilation by the British girl group and also their first release as a trio – plus, as for now, it looks like this will also be their final release before going on tour and having a break afterwards. Between Us came at the best possible time, as I’ve grown to love the group more and more over the last few years and with Sweet Melody, they finally released a song that completely won me over in late 2020. 2021 was therefore a great opportunity for me to dive back and more into their earlier stuff, and I started to enjoy these songs as much as never before. Definitely a strong Pop record from a strong girl group! This also earned them their first Gold certified album on my weekly charts.

Agnes closes this batch with her latest album Magic Still Exists. The Swedish singer is probably still mostly known for her 2008 hit single Release Me and yes, this song also kept being stuck in my head even over a decade later. Despite that, I somehow never checked her out until she dropped the single 24 Hours in mid 2021, which caught me by surprise and became her very first notation on my weekly charts. When the album then came out, I was even more surprised because this is such a well crafted, modern, catchy, yet interesting Dance-Pop record and basically proves once again that the Swedish musicians know exactly how Pop music works. It’s kinda giving me Robyn with Body Talk vibes.

British Indie Pop band London Grammar released their third album Californian Soil in 2021. While their first two sets If You Wait (2013) and Truth Is A Beautiful Thing (2017) didn’t make big waves for me, Californian Soil immediately turned out to be their best work to date for me personally. This is the Indie Pop I love, catchy at times, always accessible, but still a bit alternative.

Alvaro Soler had a similiar situation like London Grammar, as the German-Spanish singer released his third album Magia in 2021 and while his first two sets were solid efforts, Magia clicked with me as much as Alvaro never did before. His very first number one entry on my charts (singles included), a very happy, uplifting record perfectly made for the summer.

While Taylor Swift didn’t score one really massive hit in 2021 (Willow reached #49 on the Singles countdown), it still felt like it was totally her year and she kept reaching milestones, kept releasing albums, and kept impressing fans, charts followers and casual listeners alike. Following some problems with her old recordings, the singer decided to re-record all of her older albums and release them again, with Fearless (Taylor’s Version) having made the start in Spring 2021. The original album was the reason why I fell in love with her over a decade ago and this re-release made me appreciate it again. Her first of three appearances on the countdown.

2021 was the year when many highly anticipated albums finally got released and Bebe Rexha’s second album Better Mistakes was definitely one of them – unfortunately, many of these highly anticipated albums then ended up with less success than expected, and this also goes for Better Mistakes. Bebe’s debut album Expectations reached #3 on the Year-End Charts 2018 and even though Better Mistakes is still a good album, it kinda lacks originalty, is a bit too short and also not too cohesive.

Madison Beer released her full-length debut album in early 2021, a great album with a good mixture of Pop and R&B, plus she’s a fantastic yet somehow underrated singer. It’s still beyond me how Madison still hasn’t more success on the charts out there and how especially Boyshit wasn’t a worldwide hit for hers. Life Support was definitely a great start for a promising career.
