  • Magnus's Top 200 Songs of 2016: FINISHED

In this thread I'm going to do a countdown of my top 200 songs (singles, album tracks, EP tracks etc.) released* in 2016. As always my Year End Chart is based on plays from 1st January until 31st December so I need the year to have ended before I can start this.

The Top 200 countdown for 2016 begins here. (Top 10 here)

    Top 25 Albums of 2016

    Top 50 Older Songs

Top 15 Older Albums + Top 10 Artists

170 covers for 296 of the 300 estimated songs (as of 20th December) with the highest chance to end up in my top 200. (Last year's version of this image sucked but this one is awesome!)

The poll contains eight of my biggest favourite songs this year (as of 20th December) plus a trap song that I don't like much and won't appear on the chart at all.

*) In most cases, the meaning of this is obvious but there are a couple of special cases: 1) If a song was released as a single in 2015 (or possibly earlier) but is also included on an album or EP that was released in 2016 then I will treat it as a 2016 song if I didn't discover it until this year. Similarly, if a song was included on an album released in 2015 (or possibly earlier) but was also released as a single in 2016 then I will treat it as a 2016 song if I didn't discover it until this year. There will be a separate chart (possibly top 50) of my most played older songs during the year.

Can't wait! Really, really excited for this

Not sure which one could be your #1. I think it must be Aubrie Sellers or Simone. Also wouldn't mind if it's Chelsea.

(lol'ed a bit at "Into You" being there though... has this actually entered your singles charts? )

^ Well, she's currently leading the poll by 100 points and in my latest post in your thread I also explained how a song could become #1 on the YEC without having charted on the weekly chart so you never know

Thanks for commenting, king_oxymoron and Tansike!

^ Great! The thread will still be here in February so you can always check it then, and last year I didn't even finish until the middle of February (although the main countdown was finished on 22nd January).

              2006 Top 15

Because I've been making year end charts since 2000 but only started posting them here last year I thought I would post a "retro" chart and I chose to go back in time exactly one decade (can't believe it's really been a decade already!). There were 200 positions in that chart just like all years but I'll settle for just the top 15 here. Most of these songs are still amazing.

#15. Sara Paxton – Connected YouTube Audio

              (Soundtrack album cover)

Sara Paxton (the mermaid) is better known as an actress but she recorded some songs in 2005-2006. This is not as good as "Here We Go Again" from the year before.

              Plays in 2006: 119
Best Month (percentage of total plays): March (59%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 51
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 4

#14. The Faders – Look at Me Now Video

              Plays in 2006: 121
              Best Month: April (18%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 17
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 3

              #13. Delays – Valentine Spotify V

              Plays in 2006: 126
              Best Month: March (50%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 54
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 3

Delays are one of my favourite bands with only male members. Their best song is "Nearer Than Heaven" that was #8 on my YEC in 2003.

#12. Sidsel Ben Semmane – Son of Semmane

              (Album cover)

              Plays in 2006: 131
              Best Month: June (82%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 78
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (1 week)

Unfortunately this song doesn't seem to be available anywhere these days so I can't post any links. Some of you may know the singer from the Danish ESC entry this year (i.e. 2006) and that song ("Twist of Love") is also on the album. "Son of Semmane" (a ballad that sounds nothing like the messy ESC entry) is the only song I really like on it though. The title seems weird but from the lyrics it seems she's singing about how her grandparents met ("This is the story my mother told me about her mom and dad").

              #11. Melanie C – First Day of My Life S V

              Plays in 2006: 141
              Best Month: February (65%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 33
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 2

#10. Cheyenne Kimball – One Original Thing A

              (Album cover)

              Plays in 2006: 161
              Best Month: March (64%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 82
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 2

              #9. Laura Michelle Kelly – Communication S V

              Plays in 2006: 167
              Best Month: September (84%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 85
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (4 weeks)

              #8. Jessica Simpson – A Public Affair S V

              Plays in 2006: 169
              Best Month: July (78%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 87
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (1 week)

Jessica Simpson's second and most recent top 10 hit on my YEC; she was #1 in 2000 with "I Wanna Love You Forever".

#7. LeAnn Rimes – And It Feels Like S V

              Plays in 2006: 178
              Best Month: June (33%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 74
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 2

              #6. Thorunn – Wide Awake A

              (Album cover)

              Plays in 2006: 188
              Best Month: July (55%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 83
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 2

By far my favourite song with the title "Wide Awake". Apparently she's from Iceland but was living in Luxembourg at the time; that's one of the coolest country combinations I've come upon .

              #5. LeAnn Rimes – Headphones S A

              (Album cover)

              Plays in 2006: 199
              Best Month: June (52%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 88
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (3 weeks)

2006 is LeAnn Rimes's best year so far with two songs in the top 10. This is probably one of my favourite non-singles ever by a famous artist.

              #4. Lidia Kopania – Sleep V

(Couldn't find an official cover for this song, so this is just a picture of her.)

              Plays in 2006: 206
              Best Month: October (84%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 82
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (5 weeks)

This was three years before she competed for Poland in the ESC and the song was a random great discovery I made.

              #3. Anna S – Love You Forever S

              Plays in 2006: 223
              Best Month: April (50%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 57
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (4 weeks)

Swedish singer that released three great singles in 2005-2006, later followed by a solid album (only released digitally).

              #2. JoJo – Too Little Too Late S V

              Plays in 2006: 508
              Best Month: July (67%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 284
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (7 weeks)

Definitely my favourite JoJo song (although it got some competition in 2009 by the unreleased "Keep Forgetting (To Forget About You)").

              #1. Vanessa Hudgens – When There Was Me & You S V

              (Soundtrack album cover)

              Plays in 2006: 1,263
              Best Month: February (64%)
              Highest Weekly Plays: 294
Peak Position on Weekly Chart: 1 (12 weeks)

The first High School Musical movie was by far the best and this song won on my YEC by one of the largest margins (especially percentage wise) ever.

I'm glad you like some of the songs from my 2006 top 15! "First Day of My Life" seems to be the most popular song... I actually chose to list 15 positions (rather than 10) specifically so that would get included. I agree it's amazing that it's already a decade old, and it's actually 11 years old as it was released in the UK in 2005 (but in Sweden it wasn't released until 2006 and I didn't discover it until that year).

50 Songs That Missed the Top 200

There were a lot more than 200 new songs I liked in 2016. 279 new songs got 20 or more plays, which isn't a record but is still higher than most years.

These are 50 songs that didn't (quite) make it to my Top 200. Like last year it's the 25 closest behind plus 25 that might be of special interest:

                          201. Alan Walker – Alone
                          202. Anni Perka – Bitte melde dich
                          203. Anni Perka – Wenn das Freundschaft ist
                          204. Madeline Merlo – Crush
                          205. Anni Perka – Fόr dich
                          206. Maren Morris – Sugar
                          207. Madeline Merlo – Tumbling
                          208. Kalie Shorr – He's Just Not That Into You
                          209. Madeline Merlo – Alive
                          210. Colbie Caillat – Goldmine
                          211. Katelyn Tarver – What Do We Know Now
                          212. Anni Perka – Du bist fόr mich nicht alles

                          214. Delta Goodrem – Dear Life
                          215. Carly Rae Jepsen – First Time

                          221. Madeline Juno – Salvation
                          222. Christina Stόrmer – Seite an Seite
                          223. Sabrina Carpenter – Smoke and Fire
                          224. Carly Rae Jepsen – Body Language

                          248. Agnete – Icebreaker

                          274. EFF – Stimme
                          276. Anna Kδnzig – Get Out
                          279. Samra – Miracle
                          286. Zella Day – Man on the Moon
                          292. Sergey Lazarev – You Are the Only One
                          296. Foxes – Cruel

                          709. Ariana Grande – Into You

I don't hate "Into You". I think it's a pretty good song. But it didn't catch my interest enough to get more than two plays which was only enough for #709. (I have rules to separate songs with the same number of plays.) If anyone still votes for it in the poll you have only yourself to blame ;).

                            Dead at Into You!

Carly Rae is too low! Nice for Zella Day making an appearance. The Colbie Goldmine song is nice.

Foxes - Cruel is brilliant but i prefer Wicked Love. Hoping to see it higher in your chart. It was my no.2

                            237. Olivia Holt – Phoenix - This is one of my fav's on the list! It sounds like a huge hit too. Too bad it didn't get noticed.

                            YES at GRACE CAPRISTO!!

                              !!!

Luckily i voted for Nirvana because it was a song i remember doing well in your chart even if it was Mr Rager's chart where i first came across the song. As much as i love Man on the moon i doubt it held up enough in the long run to challenge for that end of year #1 spot.

If it receives at least 100 votes I might change the rules and put it at #1 despite only getting two plays.

Carly will be in the top 200 too but I wouldn't have minded if more of her songs had been there. "Goldmine" could also easily have made the top 200.

                                  237. Olivia Holt – Phoenix - This is one of my fav's on the list! It sounds like a huge hit too. Too bad it didn't get noticed.
Yeah, "Wicked Love" won't be #2 on mine but definitely in the top 100! Not sure why I didn't like "Phoenix" more; it's her "worst" song this year for me.

As much as i love Man on the moon i doubt it held up enough in the long run to challenge for that end of year #1 spot.
Yeah, I LOLed a lot when I saw how people voted in the poll but maybe it was evil to add such a well known and popular song (despite the warning that one of the songs was a "trap"), and by coincidence it ended up on top due to the alphabetical ordering. I'm glad you voted for "Nirvana" though!

She's way too high and way too low and also has two songs way too much in between!

Also nice to see Anna Kδnzig there, Cappa already having her first entry, all the entries for the underrated Carly and Maren Morris having some tunes there. Surprised about "Alone" being already so high for Alan Walker.

Also a bit surprised to see 'just' 18 songs being in german, as it felt like there would be a lot more...

Thanks! The #201-#300 block probably looks better than it is because below #225 I didn't list any of those songs no one has heard...

"Alone" got its first play on 7th December so it didn't have that little time, and I actually doubt it would have been much higher if it had been released a month earlier (i.e. I'm mostly over it already). There are newer songs in the top 200.

That's more (I think) than all of the previous years (2000-2015) together and still people ask for more . Seriously though, I understand what you mean and the main reason is that Wolkenfrei who had huge success on my weekly chart don't have any songs from 2016. If songs from 2014 and 2015 had been included here the number would easily have been doubled. Also, Anni Perka got a bit unlucky with a lot of songs just below #200.

Here comes the first of 20 posts of my top 200. I will try and include a video for one of the songs in each post. The highest weekly plays will be shown when it's at least 100 and for all songs in the top 20.

It took 49 plays to reach the top 200 this year, compared to 59 last year (but 49 is still the second highest so far).

The poll will remain open until the top 10 is posted in about a week.

I know it was just her on that release, though.

I'll just yay Carly in general as i can't remember all the specific songs on that release but i know i liked it.

The time isn't why i'm surprised, it's more than it didn't do that well on your personal charts so i thought it would be lower / not that high. But i guess i underestimated its chartrun...
