  • urbanmusik's best of 2016 [singles: 075-051]

2016 was such a fantastic year for music that I promised myself I'd do a countdown for it. I'm a procrastinator, so here we are just in time for the 2017 countdown season.

2016 was the best year for albums ever. Period. I'll be doing the singles countdown first though.

Eligibility is any single released from 01/12/2015 to 30/11/2016. Since we're in the post-digital age I'll be using the term "single" loosely to include promo-singles and anything I consider more than an album cut. Singles from albums released prior to the eligibility period are also eligible.

I've added a poll featuring eight songs featured I've listened to in 2016. Some I listened to a lot, some a little.
One of them is #1, so have a guess.

        stan a bit Akini.

I initially thought I'd be doing a top 200, but I ended up with a lot of songs when curating my list. Here are the ones that just missed the top 300. You'll be getting artwork for each song and commentary further up the chart.

Meghan Trainor - Better (feat. Yo Gotti)
Mollie King - Back to You
These were two of the last artists I expected to produce two of my highlights of the year but they did. Undeserved flops.

Coldplay - Hymn for the Weekend
Good song but I prefer the Seeb remix.

                    251 Rosie Lowe - Woman

I usually enjoy everything Charli releases, but not that blot in her discography between Sucker and Number 1 Angel. :-?

"Hymn for the Weekend" is beautiful, and not just because of Beyoncé's gorgeous chorus, though that certainly helps things. "No" was my BOP for about 24 hours.

301 Nick Jonas - Under You
                        308 Meghan Trainor - NO
313 Gorgon City - All Four Walls (feat. Vaults)
322 Coldplay - Hymn for the Weekend
                        324 Justin Bieber - Company
325 Little Mix - Hair (feat. Sean Paul)

"Rockabye" is brilliant! Definitely the best song Clean Bandit have ever released.

256 Drake - Too Good (feat. Rihanna)
                        264 TWENTY88 - Selfish
265 Alicia Keys - Blended Family (What You Do for Love) [feat. A$AP Rocky]
269 Clean Bandit - Rockabye (feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie)

"Slumber Party" was among my Top 10 songs released last year. The Tinashe remix really sells the song for me, and the video is uber sexy. "Double Tap" is beneath Jordin's capabilities, but it was cute for a few spins.

279 Adele - Water under the Bridge
289 Britney Spears - Slumber Party (feat. Tinashe)
294 John Legend - Penthouse Floor (feat. Chance the Rapper)
296 Jordin Sparks - Double Tap (feat. 2 Chainz)
299 Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)

                            Accurate.

We lose our first poll option in the form of DNCE's Cake by the Ocean at #202. Sometimes I think this song is pop songwriting at its best, while at other times it just seems like mindless radio fodder to me. Either way, it's nice to see Joe Jonas getting a third shot at a music career. That's the highest of DNCE's three entries in the 2016 countdown. None of you picked this option in the poll, so I guess you know me well enough to know it had no chance at #1.

The first single from Ariana's Dangerous Woman album finishes at #210; however she has three more entries higher up the countdown. ZAYN makes his only entry in the 2016 countdown with his debut single PILLOWTALK one place behind Ariana.

Massive Attack, Anderson .Paak, Princess Nokia, The Weekend & Anne-Marie also make appearances in this update. Expect to see more from all of them further up the countdown.

Charli XCX manages to chart at #226 and #240 in the form of a writing credit on will.i.am's Pia Mia collaboration Boys & Girls, a Rostam assisted remix of Jim-E-Stack's Deadstream, in addition to her Mr Oizo feature which dropped in the previous update.

                            201 Florrie - Real Love
202 DNCE - Cake by the Ocean
203 Sean Paul - No Lie (feat. Dua Lipa)

Here are some songs I listened to a lot during 2016 as we enter the top 200.

Among those tracks we have two final entries from generic bop maker Hailee Steinfeld, Adele's best song from 25, and the first solo entries from newcomers RAYE and Dua Lipa, who have already charted with features and have several solo entries further up the chart.

There are a ton of bops that flew under the radar from the likes of Lao Ra, Kero Kero Bonito, Flume, Zak Abel, Liv Dawson & Tkay Maidza. Dave, Chance The Rapper, ScHoolboy Q & YG deliver some of the rap highlights of the year, while Gwen Stefani, Shakira & Xtina are music legends who made a small dent on my chart in 2016.

151 Chairlift - Crying in Public
152 Lao Ra - Jesus Made Me Bad

Love the vibe of "Let Me Love You"! "When We Were Young" isn't anything new from Adele, but I really enjoyed it anyway.

156 Drake - One Dance (feat. Wizkid & Kyla)
161 Ariana Grande - Let Me Love You (feat. Lil Wayne)
168 Adele - When We Were Young

173 Gwen Stefani - Make Me Like You

"Chantaje" is decent. I must admit that I expected a bit more from the video, though.

I feel that Shakira, like many of her contemporaries (Christina, Gwen, Enrique) has lost her passion with her last few records and has been phoning it in to an extent.

In this small update we lose bops from Fifth Harmony, Allie X, KStewart, D.R.A.M., Felix Snow & Ariana Grande. Grimes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Roísín Murphy & Selena Gomez also chart with singles from their respective 2015 albums. George Maple, Massive Attack and Banks each have two entries in this portion of the chart (+ Noonie Bao inc. features).

In at #125, Love on the Brain is the first of four singles from Rihanna's ANTI to chart, and one of her better ballads. PC Music's easyFUN and Hannah Diamond make it onto the chart, who alongside Cuckoolander and Noonie Bao (+ Selena, Rihanna, Carly Rae, Fifth Harmony) make up artists who have worked with Charli XCX on music. Also peep the Yasmin feature.

Might as well bring the ting back so I can get it out of my sig.

We lose our second poll option in the form of F**k Apologies; JoJo's comeback was good, but not the big moment I was hoping for. Keke Palmer gave us her best track when she teamed up with Jeremih, while Charli XCX put a SUCKER leftover on the Angry Birds (!!!) soundtrack and it actually goes off. Kanye wasn't quite as messy in 2016 (the music too), while Skepta and Travis came through with bangers. Kali Uchis gave us a lush single that didn't end up on her debut album, while MØ, Dua Lipa, Maggie Rogers and MNEK all gave us big pop songs during albumless periods of their careers (we still have to wait until 2019 to get the Maggie Rogers album!)

                                          101 MØ - Drum
                                          102 Maggie Rogers - Alaska
103 Dua Lipa - Last Dance
104 MNEK - At Night (I Think About You)
105 Dawn Richard - Not Above That
106 Alicia Keys - In Common
107 Keke Palmer - Ememiez (feat. Jeremih)
108 Kali Uchis - One Girl (feat. Steve Lacy & Vince Staples)
109 Goldlink - Fall in Love (feat. Ciscero)

the JoJo song was cute, and MO's Drum was a song I didn't appreciate at the time, but looking back it's quite cool.

You're really intent on finishing this.

"In Common" was my #3 song of 2016.

106 Alicia Keys - In Common
107 Keke Palmer - Ememiez (feat. Jeremih)
                                                  120 Kanye West - Famous

Neither is the best from the respective acts, but they're cute tracks.

Lots of big songs in this update. The xx, Tove Lo, Frank Ocean and Fifth Harmony all delivered stellar lead singles, while Tinashe's Company is one that didn't click with me until she dropped her Nightride project.

KAYTRANADA, Banks and Massive Attack are names that keep on popping up on this countdown, while Tinashe also makes a further entry thanks to a feature on KDA's undeserved flop follow-up to a #1 hit.

Sorry to the one person who voted for dvsn's incredible Hallucinations in the poll, you were only 61 places off. That song finished one position above Ariana's house influenced promo single Be Alright, which charted not far above a fantastic comeback single from All Saints and Jorja Smith's hard hitting debut single.

Big up to underrated legend Yasmin, who managed to chart yet another year thanks to a feature on Sonny Fodera's Feeling U (the deep mix is the one).

So many classics there. The Banks tracks are so good. One Strike was an amazing comeback from All Saints. Blue Lights is still my favourite Jorja Smith track. Likewise with Chill Out from RAY BLK. Work From Home is such a banger, can't believe they released a song so good.
