  • Akini's Top 100 Songs of 2019: [#1 Revealed!]

The time has come...for us to lip-sync...FOR...OUR...LIVES...or just count down my favourite tracks of the year. Both options come equipped with the same level of drama anyway.

It's been a good year in music, 2019, and that's attested to by the fact that it took a quality rating of at least 8.5/10 to even make the top 100!

So let's take a look at the contenders!

In the fresh faces corner, we have the hottest new female emcee of 2019 Megan Thee Stallion, with her summer anthem that lit many a club dancefloor ablaze, "Hot Girl Summer"; the industry's newest critical acclaim darling Lizzo, whose infectious "Juice" was ignored by the general public in favour of two- and three-year-old tracks that aren't quite as strong; and the multi-talented MNEK, with his powerful "Tongue" that I just got into at the top of the year.

In the returning favourites corner, we have defending champ Ariana Grande with her "7 Rings" and an opportunity to become the first artist to claim song of the year in two consecutive periods, a record which would come just a year subsequent to her becoming the first act to claim the top two songs in a calendar year; Lana Del Rey back in fine form with her first contender for song of the year since 2012 in the poetic "F**k It, I Love You"; long favourite of mine Taylor Swift with her feminist-driven "The Man"; and the enduring pop icon P!nk with her by-the-numbers, you-can-tell-Sia-wrote-this-recorded-a-demo-and-P!nk-replicated-said-demo-bar-for-bar "Courage".

Also up for song of the year is Will Young with arguably his career-best effort "All the Songs"; RuPaul, joined by the top 4 of All Stars 3 on "Kitty Girl", one of what will be a plethora of Drag Race entries; and, from the graveyard, delivering arguably the best vocal performance of 2019, the legendary Whitney Houston with Kygo on "Higher Love".

So take your best shot in the poll, and join me tomorrow as I start with the bubbling under list.

I went for Hot Girl Summer. But I wouldn't put it past Kitty Girl to pull a huge upset

Oh wow, Tell Your Girlfriend made your list! I'm so pleased!

Also surprised to see what a force Sara Bareilles has been on your list so far. I suspect she's got at least one song in your top 50?

Also a nice shout-out to Megan, which makes me hope Hot Girl Summer also made it.

Thanks for introducing me to it! There are at least a handful more of CT-introduced tracks in the countdown.

We'll see about Sara! History would say yes, as she's managed two top 20 year-end appearances, and a top 25 one in the past.

There are no red herrings in the poll, so there's a 100% chance Megan made the main list.

This was a tough list of songs to rank this year. I actually like them all, and they probably would've made my main countdown in other years.

And we now commence with the main countdown!

In this first batch of five, we have the greatest singer alive, one of the biggest names in female country music of the last five years, the big female hip/hop breakthrough of 2019, a criminally underrated R&B darling, and an American Idol graduate.

                                      100. Todrick Hall - Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels

A ball-ready anthem packed with more gay vernacular than an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, "Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels" is high-energy fun and diva-level sass, which dies down and veers into the repetitive lane towards the chants-driven end. Had Todrick tidied up the back half of this, it really would have been a stunner, but he did better work on the two tracks of his still to come.
                                      Code:
                                      Quality Rating: 8.5/10
                                      Akini's Daily Top 20 Peak: #1(2)
                                      Play Count: 39
                                      099. Tinashe - Perfect Crime

Quick - what's better than me? That opening expression of bravado is a whole entire mood...which the track inevitably ends up juxtaposing with a more vulnerable display of heartbreak expressed through some not-entirely-healthy channels (Pourin' up my medicine and tequila). I love the intersectionality of not only the lyrics, but the production. It's slowed down for the more ballad-leaning parts of the track, and Tinashe's voice sounds especially lovely on those parts.
                                      Code:
                                      Quality Rating: 8.5/10
                                      Akini's Daily Top 20 Peak: #3
                                      Play Count: 21
                                      098. Céline Dion - How Did You Get Here

Céline Dion gets criticised often for being a one-trick pony, and though there are more than a handful of tracks in her discography that disprove this notion, it's still a widely held belief among the music fanatic community, but I would be hesitant to chastise a music legend for taking ballads and singing them really well; surely, people commit worse crimes on a regular basis. "How Did You Get Here", admittedly, is like the overwhelming majority of the French-Canadian's catalogue. It's a ballad taken to some pretty impressive places by that thunderous instrument of hers, but on this particular track, Ms. Dion laments on the oftentimes unpredictability of love. It arrives at her doorstop much like Adele did in "Someone Like You" - out of the blue, uninvited. And it stays, despite the protagonist's reservations. This is a simple song, but beautiful all the same. I love the backing vocals on this track, and after wondering how her lover scaled the walls of her heart, Céline does a bit of vocal scaling herself, for good measure.
                                      Code:
                                      Quality Rating: 8.5/10
                                      Akini's Daily Top 20 Peak: #4
                                      Play Count: 13
                                      097. Maren Morris - The Bones

Like so many of my favourite country songs, "The Bones" has a beautiful simplicity, both in its lyrical construction and melody, but sends a powerful message all the same - that a strong foundation can weather whatever storm passes through. In the context of a relationship, it serves as a worthwhile reminder to seek out those bonds that run deeper than the superficialities that hallmark so many unions. My favourite line is, The wolves came and went, and we're still standing. At my core, I'm a hopeless romantic, so this song does a lot for me.
                                      Code:
                                      Quality Rating: 8.5/10

                                      Play Count: 19
                                      096. Megan Thee Stallion - Big Ole Freak

Opening with a sample from a rather obscure 90s R&B ballad, "Is It Love This Time" from Immature, "Big Ole Freak" swiftly switches tempo and PG ratings as Megan makes her intentions crystal clear (Suck it then look in his eyes then the next day, I might leave him on read). Lavish sexual claims are pretty much right up there in the hip/hop playbook (just below wild wealth declarations and right above homophobia and misogyny), but there hasn't been a female rapper who's made as convincing a claim since...Nicki Minaj no less.
                                      Code:

                                          Dua way too low!

NHHH slaps so hard but I agree we could’ve have one more chorus and a shorter outro.

The Katy one is just a bit too simple for me, and the chorus doesn't spark the way Katy's best choruses do. With Dua, I think I've always not liked her material as much as a lot of other pop fans do.

                                              095. Will Young - Scars

Backdropped against a smooth, simple synthpop melody, "Scars" tells the largely familiar tale of a not-entirely-healthy romance that produces scars, which the protagonist concludes are worth it every time. Will's falsetto here is beautiful, and does well to capture an energy that seems frail on the surface, but has more...bones, so to say, than would appear to be the case at first glance.

                                              094. Madonna - Faz Gostoso (feat. Anitta)

It's not the first time Madge's traversed the Latin lane (she did so to great effect on "La Isla Bonita" three decades ago), but "Faz Gostoso" is definitely the smoothest foreign language ride on Madame X. The chorus is just deliciously catchy, with both Madonna and Anitta flirting with danger and giving us every indication that they plan on giving into it, too.

                                              093. Adam Lambert - New Eyes

Dark, moody, glam rock/pop is a comfortable sound for Adam, and this is one of his best ones ever in that vein. The pace of the song is perfect, the instrumentation clean and alluring, but there is room for a big moment here, like a definitive falsetto part, and knowing Adam's more than vocally competent to deliver on that end, "New Eyes" does leave me feeling a tad underwhelmed.

                                              092. Lizzo - Jerome

One of the few emotional Cuz I Love You moments, "Jerome" is a ballad with bite, where Lizzo not-so-gently dismisses a pursuer, who is not emotionally mature enough to engage in any kind of romantic relationship with her. "Jerome" speaks to the issue that many heterosexual women complain about - dealing with men who have scars that they expect their girlfriends and wives to heal. I must admit that I slept on this track until she performed it at the AMAs, and I really connected with her emotion on it then.

                                              091. Jax Jones + Years & Years - Play

A light, summery dance-pop slice of goodness that was interestingly enough released in late autumn, "Play" saw Years & Years returning to a more playful brand of pop, after a notably darker venture on Palo Santo. It's not at all spectacular, but it's so catchy and so much fun.

I would support Todrick's output if he hasn't turned out to be a complete ass, but NHHH does still slap. In the bubbling under, I'm really pleased to see Carly and Sara doing the biz, but I would have Saint Honesty and Happy Not Knowing higher, among my faves from each project.

Jax and Y&Y absolutely my favourite from the 100-91, it was high for me last year and it still bangs.

You wouldn't by any chance have any oversized cheques for $100,000? Ever the clever queen of beauty and class, the AS4 champ that never was poked fun at her premature elimination on "Go Fish", even going as far as casting Naomi Smalls, the queen who strategically axed her, in the music video as the villain. Though the song is obviously personal to her, I think its message of prevailing in the face of life's ace up the sleeve challenges is universal, and I tend to play this when I need a pick-me-up.

I've not done my homework on this song, so I'm not positive this track is really the political statement I think it to be, but the thought that we live in a world that's divided and stubborn to the extent that people define themselves by their respective 'sides', and refuse to listen to each other and make non-partisan moves is very timely, for the US, yes, but really for the whole world, given the trend politics has been shifting the last five or so years. As with most songs that speak about this issue of divisiveness, the pathway to a solution seems to be recognising that we oftentimes have more things in common than not.

I've personally always worn my heart on my sleeve, for better or worse, so I wholly endorse the message in "Fake Smile" to not give into the norm of pretending to be happy when you're anything but. I recently attended one of Ari's Sweetener tour dates, and this certainly seems to make quite an impact with her fans.

Never need a bitch, I'm what a bitch need. It's a problematic opening, yes, but I love the swagger there and throughout the track. It's a feel-good hip/hop song with all the standard fittings of a turn-up rap track, with that extra polished production that we've come to expect from Abel.

I'm a big fan of eclectic pop songs, and ESC has proven to be a reliable source of just that over the past six years I've been viewing the grand final. The He-lo e loi-la bits in the chorus work so well with the clean, soaring melody and the back and forth between the lead male and female vocal, and then there's that cool Joik breakdown in the bridge that sets the stage for the chorus to breeze 'round once more. This is the kind of song I always root to do well in the contest, so I'm glad it finished top six. Personally, I think it's miles more interesting and fun than the actual winner.
