  • 10. Högni - Komdu með

    Country: Iceland
    Genre: Indietronic, Downtempo
    Year: 2017

The album was videly panned, but I still pick this song as one of my 10 favourites of the last decade. It's pulsating and disjointed electronic rhythm mixed with the humming and falsetto vocal creates an atmospheric piece.

    • 9. Evigheten - Eksistensen

      Country: Norway
      Genre: Synthpop, New Age
      Year: 2019

Dizzyfying cut, a slow burner progresses to some sort of a mid 90s new age Eurovision-esque song from Norway/Sweden/Finland/Lithuania (those ones come to mind: Den Vilda, Aava. Strazdas).
The band does the music/lyrics themselves and sings about existential issues, so that adds extra points in my book.

      • 8. Petra Marklund - Handerna Mot Himlen

        Country: Sweden
        Genre: Pop
        Year: 2012

She was the one claiming that we never see her again, then decided to switch from her September alias to her real name and release this anthemic pop song with a Bergman-styled music video. Swedish-language made her album "Inferno" the best kept secret of Swedish music scene of the early 2010s.

          Country: Spain
          Genre: Synthpop, Indie Pop
          Year: 2018

Little did I know but those three nerdy girls from Spain inexplicably made a super relatable song for me personally (especially my teen years).
The synths are a bit over-the-top and some might easily dismiss the repetitive rhythm.

            Country: Sweden
            Genre: Post-punk revival
            Year: 2011

Former Refused frontman moved into the post-punk territory. I personally enjoy the guitar work here the most.

            • 5. Valeria Stoica - Poate

              Country: Moldova
              Genre: Indie Pop, Singer-songwriter
              Year: 2018

So I guess not everyone likes it, right? Anyway I am firm in my decision to put this soft-singing Moldovan singer-songwriter this high in my decade countdown. Romanian language gives this Charlotte Cardin-ish indie pop/folk piece a mysterious and delicate edge that might have not been achieved with English version.

A lot more interesting than his other band.

                Veronica Maggio is great.

I adored that Good Natured song and video - but the shitty media ignored it. Their subsequent rebrand as Lovestarrs and now Sazzie (just Sarah) have been much less impressive.
5-HT sounds like Little Boots fronting Orbital.

They used to have a huge fan on this site who had nearly every song they released in his chart and that was their only song he didn't really like!

Refused made one game-changing song though, "New Noise" which basically paved the way for modern post-hardcore acts (for better or worse).
The Good Natured story is sad, a decade of being underrated, which resulted in creative soul searching without any success. Besides the things you mentioned, "5-HT" has the best production of all TGN singles.

                  • 4. Alexia Gredy - Paradis

                    Country: France
                    Genre: Pop, Synthpop
                    Year: 2017

A model making a career in music is tricky, but Alexia managed to excel expectations with "Paradis". Sadly, despite many attempts to re-release it there is simply no sufficient French-speaking market for this kind of music anymore and this single got quickly forgotten. She is yet to release anything after her first EP in 2017. Here's hoping she hasn't given up on music completely.

                    • Honourable mentions:
                      201. Polarkreis 18 - Unendliche Sinfonie
German synthpop/indie pop act flop single.
                      202. Myrkur - Juniper
Danish model doing folk/pagan/black metal mix was immediately dismissed by the community, which is a good thing. Maybe not the most original of sounds, but the refreshing change in lavish production for a folk/black metal influenced act.
                      203. Stoffer Og Maskinen - Indeni
A danish pop rock act with some not so coventional approach to melodies and harmonies and the pulsating sound of electric guitar.
                      204. Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky
That live version is just insanely good.
                      205. Francesca Michielin - Bolivia
European major label subsidiaries teaching UK how to deal with the former talent show contestants.
                      206. Fazerdaze - Lucky Girl
Not sure about the reason, but somehow this dream pop/indie pop NZ song went slightly viral. Maybe because the girl is cute or maybe because the sound is familiar.
                      207. Eivør - Í Tokuni
This haunting piece of modern folktronica was so close to hitting that top 200. The chorus is explosive.
                      208. Morten Harket - Brother
I still love Morten even if you say this song is boring. The man just can't rest on his laurels, yes, "Brother" is pretty much A-Ha's "Crying In The Rain"/"Velvet"/other ballad. However, that music video is also beautiful.
                      209. Friendly Fires - Hawaiian Air
Slightly disappointing decade for my late 2000s darlings. This song still slaps though.
                      210. Sóley - Úa
Neoclassical arrangement with a twist here.
                      211. Linnea Dale - High Hopes
A very sultry and sexy solo song from the girl that used to be in Donkeyboy (and later came back again). Unfortunately, she lost her 2014 Norwegian NF to "Silent Storm" and didn't advance to Eurovision.

                      • 3. Iiris - Tigerhead

                        Country: Estonia
                        Genre: Electropop, Pop
                        Year: 2013

So it starts with a glossy piano and progresses to become a quirky electropop song with some irritating/childish vocals by Iiris (coincidence?). The song's about finding your own voice, something that Iiris herself struggled with. She went from emo electropop at the start of her career ("Weirdo", "Melyse") to this more challenging piece to dreamy synthpop ("Iridescent Love") and back to pure pop ("Stranger"). If anything, she'd probably be remembered as a cute teenage-ish singer regardless.
But the only one to pull you through...has got to be you.

                        • 2. Orelipoiss - See alles jääb

                          Country: Estonia
                          Genre: Folk, Singer-songwriter
                          Year: 2010

This january 2010 gem managed to hold on to #2 all the way through 2010s. The message is essentially "Friends will be friends", but in Estonian village.
The weird music video (actually the song serves as a trailer to the singer's own short movie) made it some kind of the underground meme. Eccentric friends live in a remote Estonian village, go for a very awkward haunting session with a huge doggo to no success.

                          • 1. Lo Stato Sociale - Socialismo Tropicale

                            Country: Italy
                            Genre: Ska, Pop, Indie Pop
                            Year: 2017

Lo Stato Sociale are the Italian Manic Street Preachers after 1996 (proud champagne socialists) or the Italian Chumbawamba (selling out in San Remo festival to get that one huge chart hit). But if "Una Vita In Vacanza" was their goofy version of "A Design For Life", then "Socialismo Tropicale" is actually their "So why so sad".
The song is a contradiction of extremely sad lyrics and jolly/bouncy mediterranean ska instrumental.
The song's message is actually multi-layered, the main idea is how one of the biggest modern tragedies (refugee camps and boats) can go essentially hand-in-hand with tourism destinations and people nearby not giving a damn.
The other thing that the chorus tells us to actually "dance and defend who you are", stand by your beliefs if you think they are for the better good even when no one else agrees with you or thinks you are a complete fool for trying to help others (essentially the modern green party motto).

Especially since in the recent year ska has vanished from any mainstream light.
Alexia Gredy's one is very relaxed and laid back.

I am not sure, but there's probably gonna be a concise round-up of my favourite albums in Year and Decade End Charts (just a trick to keep threads afloat for a little while)
