  • MRK 2019 End of Year Chart

Back with another EOY countdown shortly.

A year of Old versus New as the big hits from established bands/acts (Tame Impala, Satin Jackets, Pnau, Friendly Fires) battle it out with the newcomers (Lizzo, Young & Sick, Max Rad, Garden City Movement (ok not so new)) for the ultimate Champion single of the year!!

In summary, I can sum up 2019 in words beginning with D. It’s been a year of dreaminess, disco, dance music and debuts. Of the 40 tracks I am shortly counting down, only 35 artists appear, making this the most repetitive artist year on record. I’ve also seen a record 23 number ones and several tracks re-climbing back to the top spot.

Almost every #1 appears inside the Top 40, with the exception of the first #1 of the year from Izniik, which fails to even make the Top 100. Last year’s countdown had a high presence of dance tracks inside the top 20, but this year this has halved as more artists blend multiple styles with the dance genre. There are a fair number of independent artists as in previous years and virtually no big hitters. In fact only 2 of the tracks 2019’s EOY countdown reached the outer reaches of the UK Top 40. Wonder if you can spot which ones those are.

As usual here are some nerdy stats: 661 songs charted (an increase on the previous 633 record) equating to 12-13 per week. The biggest share of points for one track was awarded on 13th September to ‘Silhouettes’ by Friendly Fires. November was the strongest month with the largest total number of points awarded on 22nd November and 29th November. In contrast, the smallest total number of points were awarded on 12th April. The longest running track was in the Top 75 for 25 weeks. The biggest weekly debuts were for Garden City Movement’s ‘Miss You’ (#1), Georgia’s ‘Started Out’, Final DJs, Bright Light Bright Light’s ‘Wild’ and Beck’s ‘Uneventful Days’ (#2). The biggest Top 40 climbers during the year were Todd Edwards ‘You’re Sorry’ (38-10), Arizona ‘Find Someone’ (37-10), Foals ‘On the Luna’ (39-12) Friendly Fires ‘Silhouettes’ (37-10) and ‘Lack of Love’ (36-10), not all of these are featured in the EOY though. Right, that's enough analysis.
