  • Grybop's Best of 2010 (-#01)

Just like last time (and every year actually), my year-end chart contains songs that may have not been released as singles; in fact some of them may have not been released within the year at all.
It merely represents the songs I loved the most during the previous 12 months and started to like within that period, or shortly before.

2010 has been an odd year for me music-wise, meaning I didn't engage myself in listening to music as much as I used to. I'm certain 2010 was a great year for music - unfortunately I was not there to listen to it.

There will be no video or shortlist before this year's countdown, merely a mention of some songs that just missed out.

    Annie - I don't like your band
Kemal Dogulu - Uzayda ask var
    Lady Gaga - Alejandro
Bear in heaven - Lovesick teenagers
Dee-lux - Hot Hot Hot (Frisco Remix)
    Jason Derülo – Ridin' Solo
    Example – Kickstarts (Wideboys remix)
Laura Steel – Feedback (Soul Seekerz Club Mix)

Also, an honourable mention must go to Groove Armada's amazing album, especially their collaboration with Will Young, which unfortunately didn't make the list either.

The list this year is unashamedly poppish, containing a few dance numbers, lots of female vocalists and the token random oldie as usual.

    The countdown will commence soon.

I like Lady GaGa and the Wideboys remix of Example. I can't stand that Derulo song though.

It's a shame you haven't been listening to as much this year! I'm still looking forward to the countdown though - obviously!

            Surprised to see DeRulo.
            I love GaGa and Example.

I can't wait to see what made your list especially since you say that you didn't really listen to a lot of music in 2010.

Taking a look at some of this year's charts here, I'm surprised to see that much dislike for Derulo, I understand why some may find him annoying though!

Thanks for the responses and, no, I only wish film-making took up my time - it's plain trivial everyday life routine I'm afraid.

I could see GaGa or Jason taking this. I voted for them because they are the only two I know.

Links to videos hidden in pics.

20 Washed out - Hold out

Sound compression never sounded so dreamy.

                    19 Hot chip - I feel better

My #1 ringtone of the year, awesome video as well.

18 Surisan - Where have you gone

Heard this one in Istanbul, must have been the biggest dance song of the year there!

17 Natassa Bofiliou - To telos sto saloni

                          Domestic love drama.

16 Lady Gaga feat. Beyoncé - Telephone

Beyoncé gaga-fied, now that was a surprise!

15 Florence + the Machine - Dog days are over

                          Re-releases are sometimes worthwhile.

How did I miss this until now?

Your image from "Telephone" immediately reminded me of this other crazy couple:

Now, I knew GaGa has built her career on aping Madonna, but that is just too much!!!

Hot Chip is definitely a contender for video of the year! Gaga: take note.

Also good to see Flor so high up there - it finished inside the Irish Top 30 Singles for the year, too, which also caught me by surprise, given that it's been around for years already!

I may be wrong, but didn't Surisan take part in the FSC last year? EDIT: She did, and you even started a thread which received no replies...

And shame Mr Dogulu (sorry, his name reminds me of Sweden's awful 1984 ESC winner!!) didn't make the cut. More Turkish pop, please!

Oh, and by the way, it's a shame you haven't had time to make a video this year, as you did in previous years. But fantastic to get this window into the music you've enjoyed in the last 12 months when we had precisely ZERO weekly updates!!!

Nice to see GaGa/Beyoncé (one of the best pop songs of the year) and "Dog Days Are Over" (one of the Florence tracks I like)

                                    Love the granny/Madge comparison!

I wish I could find more turkish pop in the same vein as Kemal's, but even he seems to have abandoned his electronic roots for a more oriental sound, as evident in his latest EP.

                                    Thanks for the comments

                                      14 MIA - Born free

Most effective sample usage in 2010 and yet another great video - inspired by one of my favourite movies, Punishment Park.

13 Nikos Ganos - Kita ti ekanes

                                      Pop from a pop-hating country.

12 Grum - Through the night

Favourite producer and favourite video of 2010.

#20 - it got stuck in my head! Captivating music!
#19 - pretty good, but somehow Hot Chip songs rarely have a lasting effect on me.
#18 - link doesn't work on FB, will look up for it later
#17 - I think the vocals don't match the song, but the music is lovely!
#16 - classic song, although it's a big case of 'video selling the song' for me
#15 - good but they have better
#14 - been meaning to watch this video but I always forget about it. Dramatic video (especially the part at around 7:50") but it distracts from the song. One lightweight comment though: eugh, that naked couple
#13 - my kind of thing, reminds me of that Petros guy from your 2008 chart.

                                                ...

will comment on the rest as I listen to the unknowns!

#20 is a good track! I've never heard of them before.

#17 is nice, but I think it would a good few listens to get into it properly.

#14 is far more accessible, but I wouldn't have classed Greece as a pop-hating country on the basis of what I've heard on UKMix over the years!

The elitism here is incredible - since the 90s, virtually no pop artists ('pop' as defined in the western world) have managed to stay afloat for long without eventually resorting to bouzouki or sophisticated lyrics (a genre called entechno) at some point to boost sales and appeal to a wider audience. Pop music is just "not cool" in Greece.
