Seems like Malik Harris' 'Rockstar' is actually the first Germany representing song that flopped at the show but is actually liked in Germany. While in previous years, the Germans have pretended their flop songs never happened, this one actually made the top 10 and is played on the radio. As usual with songs with rap parts, it's played in a rap-free version.
So was the song actually good but got lost among its competition, or was it misunderstood by the Europeans?

Germany did well in televoting if you check the televoting rankings per country. Overall, it did slightly better than Azerbaijan, Australia, Czech Republic and Switzerland so it didn't come last in the pu^blic vote. It was the juries that completely ignored it which is a shame and not expected.

I think the producers completely ruined its chances by placing it after Ukraine. Also, I strongly believe the performance was very very boring. Even for me who like Malin and the song, I didn't pay attention to the live performance. It was boring and forgettable. The song needed a Michael Schulte-type of staging. I respect that he had a personal concept in mind but it didn't work on TV.

And yes, the song is a hit in Germany. it was doing well before Eurovision on radio and streaming which was a first! Even Michael's entry in 2018 become a hit after the success in ESC I think. So basically this year's entry was a hit in Germany but it wasn't a hit in the actual scoreboard so I guess the new approach of the DE broadcaster was 50% successful. Maybe it will encourage other acts to send good songs since Malik's song became a hit and he sold out his tour? Or the continuous failure in the scoreboard will discourage good acts to consider a ESC entry....

In other news, Glasgow is rumoured to be the alternative host city option for EBU. Wonder why Manchester is not considered?

Spain has confirmed they won't host Eurovision 2023.

The BBC is in talks with the European Broadcasting Union "to potentially host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest" in the UK.

The show's organisers have concluded, after a "full assessment and feasibility study", that next year's event cannot be held in the winning country, Ukraine.

This is because of the ongoing war in Ukraine, following Russia's invasion.

Sam Ryder came second for the UK, the country's best result since 1998.

Ryder topped the jury vote in Turin in May, but rap-folk band Kalush Orchestra, who were given special permission to leave the war-torn country to compete, soared to first place with 631 points in a symbolic show of public support.

Traditionally, the winning country is asked to host the following year's contest.

The EBU said in a statement it had conducted the study with Ukrainian state broadcaster UABC and external specialists, amid the conflict, but that the "security and operational guarantees" required to host the event cannot be fulfilled in the war-torn country.

The organisation thanked the winning nation's broadcaster for its "wholehearted cooperation and commitment in exploring all scenarios" and said it shared in "their sadness and disappointment", adding it would continue to support them.

"As a result of this decision, in accordance with the rules and to ensure the continuity of the event, the EBU will now begin discussions with the BBC, as this year's runner-up, to potentially host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in the United Kingdom," the statement read.

"It is our full intention that Ukraine's win will be reflected in next year's shows. This will be a priority for us in our discussions with the eventual hosts."

A BBC spokesman added: "We have seen the announcement from the EBU. Clearly these aren't a set of circumstances that anyone would want. Following their decision, we will of course discuss the BBC hosting the Eurovision Song Contest."

Downing Street welcomed the possibility of the UK hosting Eurovision if Ukraine cannot, pledging to ensure it would "overwhelmingly reflects Ukraine's rich culture, heritage and creativity".

"Ukraine's victory... was richly deserved and as the rightful winner the government's firm wish has been to see next year's contest hosted there," said a government spokesperson.

"If the EBU decides the competition can't go ahead in Ukraine, we would of course welcome the opportunity to work closely with Ukraine and the BBC to host it here in the UK."

They added the government was also committed to "building on the ongoing partnership between our two countries".

Asked if the government would help the BBC with the costs, the spokesman said "we're slightly getting ahead of ourselves in terms of the process".

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon addedthey also wished Eurovision could be in Ukraine, but "understand that in circumstances this isn't possible".

"However, I can think of a perfect venue on banks of the River Clyde!" she added, saying they were happy to discuss this with the organisers and broadcasters involved.

Katrina Leskanich, lead singer for the UK's winning 1997 Eurovision entry Katrina and the Waves with their song Love Shine A Light, tweeted: "Practically hysterical over the announcement that the UK could host!"

Kalush Orchestra ended their performance in Turin last month with a plea: "Please help Ukraine, help Mariupol, help Azovstal right now."

They went on to sell their trophy for $900,000 (£712,000; €838,000) to raise money for the war effort.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted Eurovision organisers to ban them from competing.

I think this is the right decision, unfortunately for Ukraine, but it's right that they are putting emphasis on Ukraine having involvement in the production.

Speaking to reporters at RAF Brize Norton after returning from an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Johnson said he believed it should be possible for the contest to go ahead there.

“The Ukrainians won the Eurovision song contest. I know we had a fantastic entry, I know we came second and I’d love it to be in this country,” he said.

“But the fact is that they won and they deserve to have it. I believe that they can have it and I believe that they should have it. I believe Kyiv or any other safe Ukrainian city would be a fantastic place to to have it.”

Obviously he's right in an ideal world but realistically, if there's still conflict, it should be in the UK.

I think it's clear (at least to me) that the BBC and the gov are not excited to host Eurovision.... but it's too late now as EBU has publicly mentioned that they will reach out to them specifically so it would be very embarrassing and disappointing to decline the offer... I would rather see UK hosting after winning and not for Ukraine but it is what it is.. imagine if they win in 2023 LOL. maybe they will try to send a mediocre entry.

The Irish singer-songwriter reflects on the success of Sam Ryder and says it would be a dream to write Eurovision entry.

Is Eurovision on Una Healy’s radar?


Before finding fame with The Saturdays, Una Healy previously performed for TV audiences Europe-wide as part of the Irish delegation for Eurovision 2006 held in Athens, Greece. Back then, Una featured as a backing singer for Brian Kennedy’s entry, ‘Every Song Is A Cry For Love’, which placed 10th in the Grand Final. Since that time, Una has continued to share her support for Ireland’s participation. On several occasions she has also offered her songwriting skills to make a Eurovision comeback. As well as this, RTÉ insiders claimed she was a frontrunner in the 2019 selection process. Now she has expanded further on that suggestion, as well as reflection on the contest itself and the success of Sam Ryder.

I would like to be part of it again in some way, because I did it in 2006. I don’t know if I would like to perform but maybe to write something for it. To write an amazing song, that would be a dream.

maybe she didn't get any big opportunities outside Spain. It's sad that she is not performing on any festivals in Spain, just Madrid pride and then a Coca Cola concert in September. I read somewhere that she's going to be in a musical this winter in Madrid (agreed to do it before ESC) and she's recording her new album/single.

In other news, apparently there are plans for a Latin American version of Eurovision..it makes more sense and probably easier to organize than the Asian one (time zones, cultural aspects, etc)
