  • BBC reporting a peak viewership of 31m.
    Words are useless, especially sentences.
    they don’t stand for anything.
How could they explain how I feel?

Euro 2020 final: TV audience peaked at 31m as England lost on penalties

A TV audience of 30.95 million watched the tense closing minutes of the Euro 2020 final, overnight figures show.

Ratings peaked during the penalty shootout between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, which was broadcast on both the BBC and ITV.

An average of 29.85m watched the whole match, according to the figures.

Broadcast on both the BBC and ITV, the combined figure makes it the highest TV audience since the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997.While England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved two of the Azzurri's spot kicks, the Lions' striker Marcus Rashford hit the post before Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka had their spot-kicks saved to hand Italy victory.

"You can cut ratings in so many different ways and audience measurement has changed over the years, but safe to say this: it is among the biggest audiences in UK broadcasting history," said Deadline's international editor Jake Kanter.

To give a recent comparison, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's statement announcing strict new coronavirus restrictions in March last year was watched by more than 27 million, the highest audience in recent history.

The official audience for Sunday's match may rise when those who saw it via catch-up services are taken into account.
The majority of people watched on BBC compared to ITV by a factor of more than four to one. The figures include those watching on ITV+1.

      • Anyone watch Lie With Me on Channel 5 with Charlie Brooks as lead? Really great series, only four episodes. A whiff of Janine about it too.

        Spartan one for you.

        • X Factor formally axed by Simon Cowell - will not be coming back (it was previously put on hold for a couple of years).

          Jedward are delighted…

          • Good, shame it didn’t have one last planned final series where they could’ve gone out with a bang instead of a whimper.

            • Won’t miss it in its most recent form - it was never going to reclaim its former glories. Probably for the best for all involved that the Allstars series didn’t happen.

              • I wonder what the ratings were like on ITV last night, they were really trying to push the Saturday Night TV vibe again with their advertising. The Cube and Beat The Chasers would have probably done well as tried formats, but I decided to watch Paul O'Grady's Saturday Night Line Up as I love Paul and was interested to see him on a new entertainment show, but my God it was drab. Incredibly boring long winded show, ranking the celebrities on very dull questions, that seemed to take forever.

                • Mega ratings for the tennis, C4 had more viewers than the other three main channels combined.

                  • Didn’t even know any tennis was on!

Nor did I know The Cube and BTC are back on… I’m really out of touch with weekend telly these days, all the best stuff is on in the week.

Awesome ratings, The BBC are under fire for not paying for the rights considering they show Wimbledon.

                          • Strictly anyone?

I don’t know what it is about this year’s show but it feels like there’s something missing… maybe the line up is a bit lacklustre? There’s nobody this year I’m really backing from the beginning. Also, Anton isn’t adding anything to the panel.

The launch show was the least watched so far, but the ratings did pick up to a peak of 8.4m and average of 7.9m for the first live show.

I really enjoyed Robert Webb and Nina Wadia, but thought AJ Odudu was overmarked for the first week… nobody should be getting a 9.

                            • I watched it and thought the scoring was very strange - under-scoring and over-scoring going on.

Loved Johannes and John though, thought they were great and can’t wait to see more of them.

                              • I find John a bit like one of those really vain gays who looks people up and down with a sneer as they enter the club, but I agree the partnership seems really good.

The scoring seemed to improve as the show went on, it's like they put all the best ones near the end.

                                • Great episode of Strictly this week, picked out some favourites.

I thought they did Adam Peaty bad, scoring him and his partner criminally low. Not as strong as last week but much better than the judges scored.

I was in tears when Greg did his introductory video and spoke about his sister - that performance clearly meant a lot to him. Loved the song they performed to as well, If You Could Read My Mind (Stars On 54). The lifts were really glorious.

Loved John and Johannes so much - a couple of very slight issues around timings and I felt the music didn’t match the energy of the dance (it needed to be bigger, bolder and louder). I wished they’d danced more together, I love the way John places his arm on Johannes when they do connect (I think this is what Shirley was picking up on). Anton and his homophobic 7.

I thought Sara and Aljaz were incredible - I just knew she had something special in her, I love her personality so much.

I thought Tilly and Nikita were absolutely sensational, one of my favourite routines in the history of Strictly - it fused contemporary and old school so well. Lovely to see Gordon have a proud father moment as well. Deserved to be top of the leaderboard, the only performance I’ve rewatched!

                                  • I didn’t think Tilly was that good - and she was overmarked. I find the judging very inconsistent sometimes. Is it me or does it seem like there’s more celebs than usual this year.

                                    • I think last year had a smaller cast so it feels bloated this year.

I enjoyed Tilly but it was over marked. I really liked Rose this week and Robert Webb is still one of the most watchable.

Judi was basically stomping around and twerking BUT I loved the fact Get Busy was Strictlyfied and it was such a hoot.

Poor Nina will probably go home this week? I’d get rid of Katie, I don’t think she’s at all likeable.

                                      • I think it's a great cast. The fact Nina went in week 1 after that great Samba in week 1 shows what a strong cast it is (or at least the bottom end is not as poor as usual). I was so pleased for Sara to go from bottom to top, I really like her. Judi was a scream, her samba was so much fun to watch. AJ is my favourite so far, 2 excellent and varied dances. Charleston is always one of my favourites and I think Tilly did a great job with it. I agree with what Mike said about John. He comes across as afraid to show his more feminine side, the muscles, the beard...it will be interesting to see whether he can let himself go a bit more when it's one of the more romantic intimate dances. I love his partner Johannes though, he is such a beautiful person.

                                        • There actually isn't a dud this year, so it will be a really interesting contest that will no doubt see some great dancers leave early due to popularity.

                                              • My main gripe with SCD this last few years is too many of them are really good at the very start so we don’t get as many journeys or underdogs.

But yes John & Johannes were great, I really liked AJ too. Rose was overmarked but I am rooting for her.
