  • In a second, much less packed, programme tonight:

    11-10-90 (Presented by Bruno Brookes)

    (21) SISTERS OF MERCY – More
    (19) CLIFF RICHARD – From A Distance (video)
    ( Charts 40 - 31 )
    (24) THE CHIMES – Heaven
    (16) NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK – Didn’t I Blow Your Mind (video)
    (09) THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH – A Little Time
    ( Charts 30 - 11 )
    (25) NENEH CHERRY – I’ve Got You Under My Skin
    (14) MONIE LOVE feat. TRUE IMAGE – It’s A Shame (My Sister) (video)
    (04) STATUS QUO – The Anniversary Waltz Part 1 (video)
    ( Charts 10 - 01 )
    (01) MARIA McKEE – Show Me Heaven
    (17) DEPECHE MODE – World In My Eyes (video) (and credits)

My favourite this week was the song from the Beautiful South that was on its way to becoming the next number one - while one of my least favourites was the very disappointing cover version by Cliff Richard of a song that had previously been a long-running hit in ths Irish chart for Nanci Griffith:

    • The first one tonight:

18-10-90 (Presented live by Mark Goodier)

      (19) A-HA – Crying In The Rain
      (23) AZTEC CAMERA AND MICK JONES – Good Morning Britain (video)
      ( Charts 40 - 31 )
      (33) INNOCENCE – Let’s Push It
      (16) WHITNEY HOUSTON – I’m Your Baby Tonight (video)
      ( Charts 30 - 11 )
      (20) HAPPY MONDAYS – Kinky Afro
      (24) RITA MacNEIL – Working Man (video)
      Breakers:
      - (27) BERLIN – Take My Breath Away (video clip)
      - (28) TINA TURNER – Be Tender With Me Baby (video clip)
      - (30) PAUL McCARTNEY – Birthday (video clip)
      (15) HI TEK 3 FEATURING YA KID K – Spin That Wheel (Turtles Get Real) (video)
      ( Charts 10 - 01 )
      (01) MARIA McKEE – Show Me Heaven (video)
      (26) BELINDA CARLISLE – (We Want) The Same Thing (video) (and credits)

A pretty good selection here - as well as the current number one by Maria McKee and the returning former number one from Berlin, I bought the latest singles from A-ha and Belinda Carlisle. Plus, a UK hit that was about to become a longer-running success in Ireland for a different artist, spending forty-three weeks in the top thirty there and peaking for three weeks at number two in June and July 1991:

      • Now, another instance (of which there had been several at the beginning of the year) of the last track of one show also being the first of the next one.....

        25-10-90 (Presented by Jakki Brambles)

        (14) BELINDA CARLISLE – (We Want) The Same Thing
        (03) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – Unchained Melody (video)
        ( Charts 40 - 31 )
        (22) PUBLIC IMAGE LTD – Don’t Ask Me (video)
        (08) BERLIN – Take My Breath Away (video)
        (26) THE SOUP DRAGONS – Mother Universe (video)
        ( Charts 30 - 11 )
        (35) JASON DONOVAN – I’m Doing Fine
        (23) PAUL SIMON – The Obvious Child (video)
        Breakers:
        - (32) GEORGE MICHAEL – Waiting For That Day (video clip)
        - (33) ELTON JOHN – You Gotta Love Someone (video clip)
        (29) PAUL McCARTNEY – Birthday (video)
        ( Charts 10 - 02 )
        (01) THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH – A Little Time
        (31) ROXETTE – Dressed For Success (video) (and credits)

Two pretty big names in the breakers this week - but the George Michael hit would continue to climb only to a not particularly impressive peak of number 23 a fortnight later, and the Elton John single was already at its peak. So was the new Paul McCartney track more fully featured - that one would disappear from the top 100 after only one more week there!

        • The most recent episodes have been so boring on the whole, although I enjoyed Maria McKee’s amazing live vocals.

The Beautiful South’s performance was so casual. I love Jacqui Abbott but Briana Corrigan’s voice was so beautiful.

          • I'm also tending to find the 1990 episodes much less appealing than those a lot earlier in this repeat run. I wonder whether viewing figures have declined, if this feeling is more widespread - it looks as if the late-night repeats have now stopped!

            Tonight's first episode:

            01-11-90 (Presented by Simon Mayo)

            (16) KIM APPLEBY – Don’t Worry
            (19) ROBERT PALMER & UB40 – I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight (video)
            ( Charts 40 - 31)
            (21) BLACK BOX – Fantasy
            (05) WHITNEY HOUSTON – I’m Your Baby Tonight (video)
            (22) ROXETTE – Dressed For Success
            ( Charts 30 - 11)
            (11) RITA MacNEIL – Working Man (video)
            (15) THE CURE – Close To Me (video)
            (09) KYLIE MINOGUE – Step Back In Time
            ( Charts 10 - 02 )
            (01) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – Unchained Melody (video)
            (25) GEORGE MICHAEL – Waiting For That Day (video) (and credits)

Nothing new in this one that I found very interesting - I wasn't even too keen on the new Kylie Minogue single. Her eleventh hit in the UK, it was only the second that wouldn't reach either number one or number two - the following week, it would climb to a peak position of number four.

The latest Black Box single was a cover version of a 1978 hit by Earth, Wind and Fire. The original had only peaked at number four - but the new version was on its way to reach number five.

            • Next, another of those weeks in which the number one is the only song featured from the whole of the top ten:

              08-11-90 (Presented by Gary Davies)

              (22) JASON DONOVAN – I’m Doing Fine
              (15) PAUL SIMON – The Obvious Child (video)
              ( Charts 40 - 31 )
              (25) EMF – Unbelievable
              (30) DEL AMITRI – Spit In The Rain (video)
              Album chart;

              - (2) PAVAROTTI, DOMINGO & CARRERAS – O Sole Mio (live clip)
              - (1) ELTON JOHN – Sacrifice (video clip)
              (20) THE LA’S – There She Goes
              ( Charts 30 - 11 )
              (11) GAZZA & LINDISFARNE – Fog On The Tyne (Revisited) (video)
              (28) JIMMY SOMERVILLE – To Love Somebody
              ( Charts 10 - 01 )
              (01) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – Unchained Melody (video)
              (29) 808 STATE – Cubik/Olympic (video) (and credits)

1990 really was a year in which a lot of cover versions charted - this week there's Jimmy Somerville's take on an old Bee Gees hit, while the Lindisfarne song wasn't exactly new either. Although it hadn't actually charted as a single before, it was from an album the folk rock band from Newcastle-upon-Tyne had released almost twenty years earlier.....

              • Some really great stuff around at the end of the year - Kim Appleby, Kylie Minogue, The Las, EMF... but then a fair few awful covers and that dire mining song!

                  15-11-90 (Presented by Bruno Brookes)

                  (22) MEGABASS – Time To Make The Floor Burn (video)
                  (03) KIM APPLEBY – Don’t Worry
                  ( Charts 10 - 01)
                  (01) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – Unchained Melody (video)
                  (26) PRINCE – New Power Generation (video) (and credits)

The Black Box and Kim Appleby performances were repeats from earlier shows - so there were only two new studio performances in this episode, from Inspiral Carpets and Caron Wheeler. I didn't remember either of these hits at all - probably because they didn't spend long in the charts. The former's "Island Head" EP, from which "Biggest Mountain" was the first track on side A, was beginning a four-week run in the top 100 (23-21-29-58) - and the second of five solo hits for the latter was already half way through a poorer run of equal length (50-40-41-65), but would re-enter for one more week at 95 a short time later. Her three others in the next three years would each fall further short of the top forty - grinding to a halt at 53, then 59, then 75.

                  • And the second one tonight.....

                    22-11-90 (Presented by Anthea Turner)

                    (05) EMF – Unbelievable
                    (03) VANILLA ICE – Ice Ice Baby (video)
                    ( Charts 40 - 31)
                    (17) THE PROCLAIMERS – King Of The Road
                    (12) ROD STEWART AND TINA TURNER – It Takes Two (video)
                    ( Charts 30 - 11)
                    (11) JULEE CRUISE – Falling
                    (08) JIMMY SOMERVILLE – To Love Somebody
                    (10) 808 STATE – Cubik
                    ( Charts 10 - 01)
                    (01) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – Unchained Melody (video)
(NEW) BRUNO AND LIZ and the RADIO 1 D.J. POSSE – Let’s Dance (video) (and credits)

The Eurovision entry from 1990 wasn't the only track premiered on "Top Of The Pops" this year before charting - the playout by Radio One DJs would enter the following week at 54.....then it would dive to 91.....then it would disappear forever. I was hoping to find out which other DJs participated - but none are mentioned on the record's sleeve, there isn't a Wikipedia page covering it, and the single is not mentioned at all in the Wikipedia pages of either of the two credited performers! Curiously, their only other chart hit, exactly a year earlier, was a version of the song heard earlier in the show by Rod Stewart and Tina Turner. That had spent an only slightly better fortnight in the top 100 (53-75).

Up until that playout, however, it had only been hits from the top end of the chart this time - my favourite was the lowest-ranked, the number seventeen from the Proclaimers. Their cover of the 1965 number one by Roger Miller was on the way to a peak of number nine.

Presenting "Top Of The Pops" for the eighteenth time, Anthea Turner still really seems to be SHOUTING.....mercifully, she only has five more shows coming up in the next six months!

                    • Postponed from last Friday - when, bizarrely, it was necessary to take BBC FOUR off the air for the whole evening because it was apparently technically more challenging to show the same coverage of the death of Prince Philip on every other BBC channel than it would have been to show different programmes on each one!

                      (20) PET SHOP BOYS – Being Boring
                      (18) BOMBALURINA featuring TIMMY MALLET – Seven Little Girls (video)

                      (25) DEEE-LITE – Power Of Love (video) (and credits)

While not one of their very best, I quite liked the Pet Shop Boys single - I would say that was my favourite from this edition! Otherwise, I only bought the two more "novelty" hits of the week...."Kinky Boots" was on its way to a peak of number five the following week, twenty-six years after its original release - while the follow-up to the recent Bombalurina number one wasn't going to go any higher than the position it was already at.

My favourite by a long way of this one was the Farm's latest single, which was on the way to becoming their biggest ever hit, peaking at number four. Fourteen years later, a new version on which they were accompanied by a Liverpool Boys' Choir very nearly matched this success, reaching number five.

                        • Delayed until tonight mainly by snooker, the last two regular editions of 1990 - starting with this one:

                          13-12-90: Presenter: Simon Mayo

Simon Mayo suggested that viewers look out for the Christmas number one this week - but it wasn't there. However, the first number one of 1991 was among the breakers - Enigma's unusual song had already been a massive hit in continental Europe, albeit with the main title generally being "Sadeness" (an invented noun conveying "pertaining to the Marquis De Sade") rather than the more anglicized "Sadness".

The only other one I bought from this week's line-up was the Malandra Burrows song which, as I found out from the Finnish DVD releases many years later, was recently) was featured in a considerable number of episodes of "Emmerdale", in which the actress was appearing at the time.

( I had to re-do this whole post after somehow losing it! )

Plenty of the pre-Christmas top ten in this one - while my highlight was the "Grease" megamix that would soon reach a peak of number three. That would improve on the previous number eleven peak of "Greased Lightning", but not quite match the previous number one peaks of the two other hits it combined - "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights".

I wasn't persuaded to buy either of the other two medley/megamixes featured thie week, though!

                            • Why was The Carpenters re-released, had it been in a film? So many old songs reared their head again in 1990!

                              • The reissue was prompted by the screening of a Karen Carpenter biopic, I think.
