I was bopping a bit but that’s not one of my favourite 2U songs, I don’t find Anita’s vocal hook very catchy. It reminds me of a friend I had in the mid-90s though whose auntie was a big raver and used to let us play her cassettes.

First show was a bit ropey, nothing too memorable apart from Kym Sims and the clip of CeCe. Second much better, especially SS proving the power of a great song. A strong live vocal from Kylie, when she had more depth in her voice.

        • Tonight's first:

30-1-92: Presenters: Tony Dortie and Claudia Simon

          (12) THE PASADENAS – I’m Doing Fine Now
          ( Top ten )
          (13) KICKS LIKE A MULE – The Bouncer
          (22) JAMES – Born Of Frustration
          (08) THE WONDERSTUFF – Welcome To The Cheap Seats (video)
          (24) DREAM FREQUENCY – Feel So Real
          Breakers:
          - (32) JULIA FORDHAM – (Love Moves In) Mysterious Ways (video clip)
          - (33) THE BLESSING – Highway 5 (Remix) (video clip)
          - (35) CICERO – Love Is Everywhere (video clip)
          (27) MANIC STREET PREACHERS – You Love Us
          (28) D.N.A. feat. SHARON REDD – Can You Handle It
          (01) WET WET WET – Goodnight Girl (video)

I bought the Julia Fordham single, which was on its way to a peak of number 19, eight places higher than her only other top forty hit "Happy Ever After". I'm surprised to find that nine more songs from her reached the top 100 over a period of seven years, all missing the top forty - two of them got to number 41!Nothing else here was of the slightest interest to me - there seemed to be an awful lot of shouting in this one.....

(Brits 1992) CATHY DENNIS – Everybody Move (video)
(Brits 1992) EXTREME – Get The Funk Out (

            (1) WET WET WET – Goodnight Girl (video)[/color]

            but instead this:

13-2-92: Presenters: Claudia Simon and Steve Anderson

(US 6) COLOR ME BADD – Heartbreaker
            ( Top ten )
            (06) MICHAEL JACKSON – Remember The Time (video)
            (09) RIDE – Leave Them All Behind
(NEW) BRYAN ADAMS – Thought I’d Died And Gone To Heaven (video)
            (04) THE PASADENAS – I’m Doing Fine No
            w
            Breakers:
            - (12) SIMPLY RED – For Your Babies (video clip)
            - (13) THE TEMPTATIONS – My Girl (video clip)
            - (17) PEARL JAM – Alive (video clip)
            (01) WET WET WET – Goodnight Girl (video)

Another pretty dreadful collection for me - including one of those big American hits they threatened to bring to the new-look programme when it first began. I had to look up the UK performance of "Heartbreaker" - it spent one week in the UK top 100, at number 58. Which was, I suggest, more than it deserved!

            • pasadenas are SO boring, had to endure them twice
one of the dance songs in the first ep, the woman's vocals were awful!

and color me badd have a weird on stage energy, 1 of them does nothing and 3 of them act like they're in Mortal Kombat
              what's going on?

so true about CMB, kinda like some early Take That songs were Gary’s crooning and Mark and Jason are breakdancing behind.

Pasadenas were horribly dated even then! Like the sort of act you’d expect on a cruise ship. Highly disproportionate amount of ugly members too.

OMG yes she was awful, so out of tune at the start.

Great performance from the Manics but the crowd were dead!

For My Babies is my fave Simply Red song, beaut.

                • Tonight's first:

20-02-92: Presenters: Mark Franklin and Tony Dortie

                  (24) BRAND NEW HEAVIES – Dream Come True
( Mentions of some of the new entries, then the top ten )
                  (21) ROZALLA – Are You Ready To Fly
                  (05) THE TEMPTATIONS – My Girl (video)
                  (20) JULIA FORDHAM – (Love Moves In) Mysterious Ways
                  (11) BRYAN ADAMS – Thought I’d Died And Gone To Heaven (video)
                  (10) OPUS III – It’s A Fine Day
                  (09) SIMPLY RED – For Your Babies (video)
                  (07) SHANICE – I Love Your Smile
                  Breakers:
                  - (17) MICHAEL BOLTON – Steel Bars (video clip)
                  - (15) MADNESS – It Must Be Love (video clip)
                  - (14) N-JOI – Live In Manchester (video clip)
                  (01) SHAKESPEAR’S SISTER – Stay

It looks as if they are now starting to allow a few more videos to be played again - maybe the poor quality of some of the live vocals was becoming an issue that viewers were starting to complain about (but which should have been recognised as a potential problem right from the start of "Year Zero"). Also in this episode, the slightest of concessions to those who were understandably missing the full top forty countdown - details of some new entries were flashed on-screen, for only a second or two each - but during one of the links, while the presenters were saying something else, such that it was difficult to concentrate on both.....

It was second time around in this episode for the Madness hit - which had previously peaked at number four ten years earlier, and was now on the way back to the top ten again, this time stalling at number six - but also for the Shanice (Wilson) single, which had only reached number 55 when first released in 1991, but would go on to peak at number two in 1992. It would seem that it was a "remix" version, not on the original single, which impressed the music buyers of the UK to a much greater extent.

There's a Wikipedia page for the latest stand-in presenter, which rather vaguely outlines quite a few other television assignments she has had over the years - generally on channels that I, and probably others, have never watched:

                      Spoiler!

There's no indication as to whether she became any less irritating in any of these, or the four other "Top Of The Pops" we should see her doing (in five more, she was alongside Adrian Rose)

My favourite from this one by a long way was the Mr Big track - which, three weeks later, would spend the first of three weeks at its peak of number..... three!

                        • Curve denied a proper appearance because of a Mr Big "exclusive". The show deserved to die for that.

                          • Nice to see Brand New Heavies, an underrated gem from the UK music scene (even if N'Dea, Siedah and Carleen who provided lead vocals across the years were American).

I've never been keen on Rozalla's voice - she can hold a tune but her pitch is just a bit off-putting to me.

Shanice with one of the best songs of the year, it's a real shame she was a one-hit wonder cos she had a lot of appeal and a great voice. She walked so Michelle Gayle could run.

From the "missing" show my favourites would be Alison Limerick (although the '96 remix is better) and New Atlantic's I Know which was sampled by Chase & Status on Count On Me and they went on to produce Berri's The Sunshine After The Rain.

Femi Oke... wow, bring back Anthea Turner
