When asked today the health secretary said the following :

Asked by former health secretary Jeremy Hunt if he would take action if the coronavirus situation deteriorates, Mr Javid replied: "If that risk matrix changes, for example, with variants of concern, we will not hesitate to take the appropriate action."
Which basically means, we are trying this, hopefully it works out, if it doesn't we can and will reimpose restrictions.

Following Macron's announcement last night, 926k vaccination appointments have been booked in a few hours.

So you guys follow the ZeroCovid approach? I don't see that being realistic on a long run basis, but I wish you good luck with that!

To get the number of people infectious while they've been in the community close to 0.

Most of the cases we're having are amongst household contacts who have been in insolation during their infectious period. That's not a surprise or a concern. But a number of new cases have been in the community potentially spreading the virus even with masks.
So get that close to 0 to eliminate community spread.

It's a massive shame that we have so many people under 50 in hospital, even under 35, including a teen and someone in their 20s in ICU last week.
That shouldn't happen. It's effecting younger and younger people.

Well I guess that is why it is important to continue to be careful and follow the public health guidelines instead of throwing everthing out the window as soon as you are vaccinated. That has been the message from the WHO since this delta variant began to circulate. Maybe your colleagues had a false sense of security?
Good that their symptoms are minimal to mild - the vaccine is clearly doing what it says on the tin ( or syringe in this case)

That shows that the vaccine is working.

I meant in terms of businesses and things being closed etc. I know on a personal level people have been doing whatever they want since February.

You're talking about public shaming people. This is not 'car[ing] for the well-being of all people'.

I'd support that... it depends though. There are people who cannot be vaxxed due to health problems but those are such a small percentage of the entire population... that we could still reach 90% vaccinations and therefore herd immunity.

I'm against mandatory vaccination, but if it ever happened, it should happen in a very transparent way.
    Which means:
    1. Politicians shouldn't deny mandatory vaccination vehemently at first, then introduce them regardless.
    2. Politicians shouldn't deny mandatory vaccination but limit many public life activities to vaccinated people only as that's a sneaky way to introduce an indirect mandatory vaccination basically.

However, the far right is only waiting for one more thing to rile up the population... mandatory vaccinations could become THE political thing which they need in order to destroy liberal democracy.

Finally, lockdown looks set to be extended in Sydney as cases have been at record highs for three days now as the Delta variant is causing problems there.

The prospect of an extended lockdown in Sydney loomed as Australian health officials reported yet another record daily rise in Covid-19 cases for the year, fuelled by the highly infectious Delta variant.

New South Wales state reported 112 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, almost all of them in Sydney.

Case numbers have been at record levels for at least three days.
