  • The drama is setting in again, stevyy. You don't need lockdowns to actually solve things. It's pretty much like constantly getting told that the government knows better what's better for you than yourself. In that case, I would argue: 'So I'm mature enough to be able to pay taxes or vote, but I can't decide to eat at a restaurant?'.

    • University students may need to be vaccinated before going into halls of residence in September.

They are looking into this now, I hope it happens because of what happened last year.

      • Lockdown extended in Sydney by another month while more than two million residents in eight Sydney hotspots will now be forced to wear masks outdoors and must stay within 5km of their homes.

As of now, there won't be a mandatory vaccination for college students, but schools (and politicians) are heavily advertising vaccination, so let's see where the story goes. It's essential that there won't be another lockdown, but I think it's likely that college students will need to prove that they're vaccinated, tested or recovered every time they want to attend classes.

                • Vaccine rollout prevented thousands of deaths in England

A short while ago, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam told the BBC the vaccine rollout has prevented 22m cases of Covid and 60,000 deaths, according to Public Health England (PHE).

Those figures are for England and cover the period up to 23 July, based on research carried out by PHE and Cambridge University.

Vaccines are also estimated to have directly averted more than 52,600 hospital admissions.

Previous estimates, for the period up to 9 July, had suggested about 37,000 deaths and 11,000,000 infections had been prevented.

If the number of young people who get vaccinated goes up, the likelihood of another lockdown will go down, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam says.

He made the point when answering a question from Priyah, 25, from Birmingham, who has not yet had the vaccine.

Prof Van-Tam says: "Once we have a very highly vaccinated adult population - that includes the youngsters, 18-25 and so forth, then the chances of us needing another lockdown are much lower."

I have the feeling anti-vaxxers talk more about it than pro-vaxxers. I see it a lot on Facebook, while I hardly know people myself who don't want the vaccine. Also, I have the feeling anti-vaxxers are really insecure and afraid, so tend to over shout their anxiety or talk about it a lot to get themselves to believe it really is dangerous.

                    • In real life, pro-vaxxers are not really vocal about it, but on social media, they are. Twitter is the worst regarding both, anti-vaxxers and pro-vaxxers. Pro-vaxxer extremists are usually the ones who critize every bit of measurement relaxation as future murder. I also noticed a few of them writing 'vaccinated' in their profile, though I'm not sure whether people should spread their medical data on the worldwide web. Anti-vaxxers usually consider the whole thing a big conspiracy of the government to extend their power over the people.
To be honest, both sides are too extreme and I feel like there's too much polarization going on.

                      -----

In Germany, there are still 400k+ people vaccinated per day on average, however the share of 2nd doses among the distributed overall doses per day keeps increasing.
For example the last few Wednesdays:
                      3 weeks ago: 67% 2nd doses
                      2 weeks ago: 79% 2nd doses
                      1 week ago: 79% 2nd doses
                      Yesterday: 82% 2nd doses

18% of all distributed doses are still first doses. I guess that will drop to below 10% within the next 2 weeks. Which means that in 2 weeks, there should be the 2nd doses of the first doses from then-6 weeks ago (~ 446k minus a few because of J&J and some people forgetting about the 2nd appointment = 440k) + about 50k new first doses ~ 490k overall doses. Sounds solid, but that's the prediction of the strongest day of the week, and would be the first dip below 500k on a Wednesday since late March.

                      • American country singer Steve Grand has tested positive for Covid following shows in Provincetown. His show was ironically titled " Straight Outta Quarantine" His show is one of the five events which led to a huge cluster of outbreaks in the area following the event and post event socialiazing.
Steve has sent a message to anti vaxers urging them to get the jab:

“Stay safe out there. If you are unvaccinated, have a look at the stats and the fact that the vast majority of COVID hospitalizations are those without the vaccine; some 99% of COVID deaths are those that are unvaccinated,” he tweeted. “Consider those who are unable to be vaccinated.”

                        • Breaking -

Netflix has become the first major Hollywood studio to implement a blanket policy mandating vaccinations for the casts of all of its U.S. productions

The streamer just informed its production teams and partners that it will be requiring vaccinations for everyone working in “Zone A,” which consists of the actors and those who come in close proximity to them.

                          Excellent Netflix. Safety first.

                            • Rewards for a vaccination are heavily debated in Germany. While they're typically normal in the US, people seem to be very sceptical about their impact here. While there is no mandatory vaccination (yet) either, it seems like my country is rather leaning towards punishment than reward in that context :/ .
On a positive note, the German state Thuringia is well-known for their sausage, and once a Thuringian region decided to hand out a sausage per vaccination, they could increase the average amount of vaccinations per day from 140 to 250 (source).

                                  • A few days ago, there's been a controversy that a German pride festival was allowed to take place without distancing or masks (even supported by politicians and the police) when previous anti-measurement demonstrations had to get disrupted due to lack of distancing or masks. A concert by Nens had to get disrupted as well as she asked the fans to come out of their distancing boxes.

                                                    - More and more politicians as well as the association of hospitals (and a few virologists) want to move away from strictly looking at the incidence rate for potential measurements and go for a mix of indicators that, however, have the hospitality rate as focus. The RKI, which is the most important institute for virology, still wants to keep the incidence rate as major instrument though.
                                                    - From tomorrow on, people who are not vaccinated (and I guess recovered counts as well) have to do an obligatory test when enterting Germany.
